The original Buena Vista Social Club album was recorded for World Circuit Records over six days at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana. Released in 1997, the album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million copies and contributing to the rise in popularity of Cuban, as well as Latin American, music.
Since forming in London in the mid-1980s, World Circuit Records has made its reputation by producing some of the finest albums of the past three decades. The label’s prestigious roster includes Buena Vista Social Club and associated solo artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando ‘Cachaíto’ López), Malian blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré, Malian divas and social activists Oumou Sangaré and Fatoumata Diawara, master kora player Toumani Diabaté, the illustrious Orchestra Baobab, musical iconoclast Cheikh Lô, and Fela Kuti’s legendary drummer and co-creator of Afrobeat Tony Allen.

I was born in a wagon ( Roma gypsy) in poverty !!, my grandmother always set an extra ( empty) plate on the table, as a ninjo, I asked her, why do you always set an extra plate grandma? She answered,, In case an uninvited hungry guest drops in! Or if a dead relative comes to visit, so that he, or she sees that they're not forgotten! Nowadays an old man !, and I live in a beautiful villa, drinking my coffee smoking Cohibas and listening to this cuban music,and enjoying my lovely garden , but still I put an extra plate on the table for dinner!

Porque aunque hija, nieta y biznieta de apasionados ferroviarios mecánicos, transportistas en síntesis, a la hora de hacer sitio en la casa siempre hubo plato para el viajero y si reniego de las máquinas es por la deriva que toman, que nos deshumanizan. Hermosa historia, gracias Antonio!Una vez en un viaje que hice a Colombia , me quedé sin dinero y llevaba días pasando algo de hambre ....uno de los últimos días , me quedaban medio peso o poco más y justo llegó un vagamundos, que me pidió algo para comer y le dije que solo tenia esto para comer , que si sabía dónde podíamos comprar algo de comida por este dinero, lo compartiría con él.
Y así fue, me llevo a una tienda donde nos dieron unos bollos de pan de leche y unas rodajas de mortadela, (no era ningún lujo) ,pero en aquel momento me supo a Gloria y los dos quedamos tan encantados de colaborar en una supervivencia hermosa, transformamos un momento triste en un momento alegre y diría que los dos ganamos algo de confianza en el ser humano, que todos llevamos dentro.

No todo es perfecto y luchamos por sobrevivir, pero si trabajo lo suficiente puedo asegurarme de que mis hijos reciban tres comidas al día y tengan todo lo que necesitan para ser felices. Every song of Buena Vista club is a soul healing for me. Even if i dont understand what they sing, it makes me feel better, happier and the most important it makes me forget about my 'fake' problems and it reminds me the meaning point of life. We only live once, enjoy it. Fuck the system,fuck everything that makes you feel bad and makes you stress. Despite all the poverty in Cuba, these people are much happier than many Europeans and Americans. I have been to Cuba a year ago and i cant not wait to go back. Greetings from Cyprus.

I own this Album in CD. I found an intact original copy that came with translated lyrics to every song in a booklet; when visiting Los Angeles at the age of 18, specifically at Amoeba Records. Many years ago. It even credits who played what in every track. I won't type out the lyrics since that'll take forever, but,....

"El Cuarto De Tula has long been a favourite with Eliades Ochoa's group Cuarteto Patria. This extended /descarga/ (Cuban jam style) features great /soneros/ Ibrahim Ferrer and Manuel 'Puntillita' Licea joining Eliades in improvising lyrics laced with sexual innuendo in the Santiago tradition.
The extraordinary solo on the /laoud/ (a small, twelve string instrument similar to a lute) is by Barbarito Torres, the finest player in Havana. The timbales are played by the 13 year old phenomenon, Julienne Oviedo Sánchez, already a veteran of some of Cuba's most celebrated modern big bands. "

Ry Cooder did an amazing job not only producing the audio we're listening to, but also extracting such a culturally rich genre and managing to provide us with: The tracks, an explanation of each song, credits to the musicians, the lyrics in Spanish/English and definitions to many phrases or words used in the Cuban "dialect". I absolutely love this album, as you can tell.
I actually won 2 tickets in Austin, TX to see them live from a classical music station contest. Took my daughter. Her grandparents were from Cuba and her Abuelo had just passed way. The show meant the world to us. We even ended up with free parking.

I used to go to Rosarito, Mexico every Labor Day weekend in my early 20s with my friends. It was always a weekend full of excess and debauchery, but i was young and me gustaba El desmadre. One one occasion, we were driving down the coast smoking a blunt and this song came on. I've never felt a song like I did this fuckin jam at that moment. What a beautiful memory.
