Really enjoyed this. Parents bought an already converted one but has had some issues I've fixed but building my own is very very tempting. Thanks for the breakdown, just need to add into a total to give myself an idea. Thanks.
Wadger Catcher No worries and glad you found it useful, it's not for everyone but I really liked working on it and it's great to use, so go for it I would say, converting them is actually quite fun.. :)
VdubPhotogLife I do rather enjoy my tinkering. Issue is, I do prefer the t5 over the t4 so down to finding one with decent miles and decent condition for a decent price. I actually like how you don't have the pop top. We hardly put the one we have up.
Great video - thank you! My partner and I have just renovated our first home and miss having a project! We also need a second vehicle so converting a van might be just the thing!
Sam and Hannah Bose Photography Haha, I'm lucky as we Alice like camping anyway, although I would rather wild camp in scenic / remote places for Photography and not sure if Alice is so keen.. If you get the chance go for it though, it doesn't cost much at all and a good T4 van or Transit can be had for even less money than the T5's and are generally more reliable if you wanted to save a bit more money..
No worries and glad it was useful, so I can't remember exactly but it was in Switzerland and I think I was on the way to Polti Di Salti or perhaps not far from the Goldeneye dam..
Hi Ian, the bed was from a company in Wales called, RS customs, the kitchen was from a company called MGDesigns they were in Plymouth but moved to North Devon.
mason salmon Thank you very much all takes time I suppose, I enjoy making them so that's the main thing and it's always nice to share with the community :)
Thank you very much Paul, no AC on ours its OK most of the year, we have had it a few times when its been too hot to sleep when in countries such as Croatia but we will tend to wimp out and get a bnb or hotel in that case. Nice plenty of the wheels on ebay, just trying to get them at a decent price
Great Video. I'm looking at starting my 2014 T5.1 conversion in the new year. I love the kitchen, you said you got it from Plymouth, can you tell me where? For £500 it looks excellent value. Love you fridge/cool box idea. This proves you don't have to spend £10000 on a conversion to get a good usable camper.
Thank you very much, yeah you can convert for not a mega amount of cash, we goto Europe in ours for 1 month of the year sometimes Scotland as well for a few weeks, plus it gets used as a weekend vehicle so, it works perfectly for the budget we have put on it.. Kitchen wise, I have had a look and they have moved to Dunkeswell that is still in Devon there website is www.mgdesign.biz/ The best advise I can give you is use glue as well and make sure you spend time getting the door hinges as good as you can
Hi great vlog and thanks for the info, but could you tell me again were you got your bed/seat, my son has just got a part conversion van and the bed doesn't really work for him as they have two kids and need seating with seat belts and yours looks just what he needs, look forward to hearing from you 😀Arlene
AmG Designs Channel Thank you very much, our bed came from a company called RS Customs they can be found on Facebook and are based in Wales, can't fault the design which can also be tilted to access storage underneath..
Hi, could you tell me the company or give me a link to the T5 kitchen furniture you put in yr van?? I like your thoughts and ideas with a bigger work space/arm space!!!! Thanks kind regards John Leeming
Instead of having a kitchen made of wood is there a way to use another material such as plastic wraped in a wood effect covering ? Is that something that anyone has done ? .
It is more than possible, I think the issue would be having long term stability in the material, most material that use plastic tend to be wood products wrapped in vinyl plastic or veneered with plastic.. Certainly in commercial building plastic / composite screens / partitions are often used so it you can get the material there is no reason you can't use it.. Plastic also suffers from creep a lot more than wood so it doesnt tend to be used much for horizontal load bearing surfaces
@@scoellphotography yeah i agree it was an idea for weight saving :) , im also in the planning stage of converting my t5 into a day van , camper , im aiming for a simple spacious and lightweight build .
I’m pretty pants with DIY with no experience, do you think a newbie would be able to do it? I was looking at buying VW already kitted out but I’m not that keen on the decor on most of the units. Yours is lovely by the way. Thanks for the video 😄 that’s a decent price, I was thinking more £12,000-£15,000 was my price range.
Thanks Dylan, yeah we do love how she came out.. im not in any trade as such although I'm quite mechanical minded, I think you could do it, if you took your time and researched it all, you only really need a basic set of tools, I hired the odd thing i didn't have.. they can be quite fun to convert and you can get some stuff which almost just slots in.. but do your research well..
@@scoellphotography g'day. Just bought a T6 LWB and looking at converting it ourselves. We converted a toyota coaster for our middle son and a toyota hiace for our youngest. Now it's our turn. The manufacturers of the rock and roll bed and the cupboards don't export from the UK to australia so where doing it all ourselves again. Really looking forward to it too. 😀
Sounds great, yeah I really enjoy working on them.. you can really transform a van in a tiny house.. T6 sounds a great one to work with lots of options being a LWB. Be good to see your other conversions?
I have a t4 do you rate having topper mattress? Most of the kit in your van I have but have mains hook up with cbe charger ,thinking about solar it's free lol!
So I think it depends on your bed / preference, our bed is quite hard and it gives me a bad back without the topper, our topper is only about 1.5 inches but it makes it a lot more comfortable.. We also have a mains hookup, which I connect a battery charger from, solar is very good as it's constant and free like you say, but it has it's limitations, and isn't really a power source, I did a vid on battery and solar which says a bit more..
Hi, wondering if you could help/advise me, I’ve just ordered the same kitchen units from MGD, were they difficult to put together? I already have a bed, will I have to remove it to install the units, and how did you attach the overhead units? Any help would be much appreciated👍🏻
So I would highly recommend removing the bed as it will make things a lot easier.. The units go together pretty well, you won't get a 100% flush fit unless you do a bit of extra scribing but it's not bad at all. Use wood glue and lots of 90 degree plastic blocks in the corners and long panels etc, I used about 50 blocks with tiny screws.. i think the kitchens come with about 4 blocks but get on eBay and buy some more.. they hold it stronger and will get held it in place whilst the glue dries etc.. It's a pretty easy kitchen to assemble to be honest.. In regards to the overhead storage.. bolt the end one to the wardrobe unit with nuts and bolts and washers. Bolt the 2 sections together and then fit L brackets onto the structural member that runs under the roof and bolt the L brackets through the ends of the overhead storage units. Luckily the ends of the overhead units roughly line up with the structure beam that runs in the roof.. Be sure to bolt down and attach the units to the van properly again with L brackets and be careful not to drill through the outside of the van, only drill through and attach to the internal skim. I had the wine rack but its the same principle if you have this or not etc. Be sure to seal the mdf as best as you can. Good luck and have fun..
VdubPhotogLife Thanks so much, very informative, I guessed I’d have to take the bed out, never mind 😀. Can I ask what you used to seal the MDF, I see you painted yours, did you do anything to the edges? Thanks again for taking the time to get back to me. Incessantly my son has just got into photography so you’r channel ticks all the boxes 👍🏻
Ideal, glad the channel helps, the van is great for getting around with the camera.. Some of the edges I sealed with wood filler, the mdf I used a mdf sealer but I think it's basically watered down PVA glue. Be sure to seal the edges well as MDF cam expand if damp. I simply roller painted mine, I used a paint conditioner which you basically mix with the paint and it makes it more runny and smooths out the marks better so you get a smoother finish..
So we spend so much time outside anyway it doesn't really feel like I would need it, i can only see a few reason to have a higher roof, changing would be easier as would making the bed of general tasks etc, but these are only confined to a short period of each day and I dont think it would make a massive difference to us really..
Yeah it isn't the cheapest one to convert but the VWs do hold their money, you can do it cheaper by making your own bed, and cutting on a few other things, and obviously you can buy a cheaper starting van, a 3-4k conversion is pretty cheap in all reality considering the cost of ready converted vans..
If you were to share your van-conversion experience and costs it would had made much more sense to leave the links to where to buy kitchen, bed, etc rather that those of your camera and filming kit wouldn't it? Bit of a waste of time IMHO.
Its a Photography Channel as well as can be seen from most of my videos, most of the bits are custom made items and posting the links won't work as such its just easier to post photography bits because they are single of the shelf items, the rock and roll bed came from Wales from a company called RS customs and the kitchen units were from Plymouth off of Ebay, however I will add a few more links to the items I have gotten of the internet such as the solar panel, The video was more meant as how much it will cost for a similar conversion
Thanks for sharing this info. Always good to get an idea of budget before taking on a project. I'm keen to take on a T5 next after doing my caddy!
Thanks Will, yeah they are great vans to work on, I hired a caddy for 10 days in Norway, great campervan
