I miss it there so much. Honestly it's ironic how the two cleanest and safest cities I've spent my expat years in Europe, Istanbul and Moscow; are in countries under a constant smear campaign by english speaking press, even when they've not really done anything newsworthy. Meanwhile London and New York are disgusting crime ridden and in decline compared to even just 20 years ago.
As a migrant. Life for you is great. You can speak with your comfortable mouth and place. But as a citizen of Turkey. Life is terrible. There is no respect to human life, people can’t afford rent, imprisonment left right centre for criticism of the state, people killed and kept under detention without a proper judicial system. Turkey should be boycotted by the foreigners like you. No one should go until human rights and democracy prevails.
Heres something you may find interesting. :) The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey'', well let me explain. :) Name of my country has always been Turkiye, that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means ''land of/belonging to''... ...just like the Latin suffix -ia in such countries as Latv-ia, Roman-ia, Eston-ia, Austr-ia, Austral-ia etc etc. Another example; decades ago Czechoslovakia Republic changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia). Anyways, most likely the Latin -ia suffix was derived from the Turkish version -iye, as Turkish is much much older. Because in old times people of different languages could only pronounce it as their languages allowed them, we got various differences in spelling like Turchia (in Italian), Turquie (in French) and Turkey (in English) all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye. Mind you this was way BEFORE the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas.... ...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''..... ....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), Rhodesian Ridgeback (because it's from Rhodesia), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc. In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years. Now in 2023, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their OWN country on the atlas, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected. So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name in other languages to Türkiye, which it always was, we basically didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : ) So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : ) Best wishes. ;)
I love the compassion of Turks towards stray animals. I saw this in every city I went to. All of the stray animals were clean and fat. I have seen very few of them in bad shape. What I mean by bad is that it's a little weak. Cats are magnificent creatures that make the world beautiful.
It breaks my heart that there are so many homeless cats though. Do they have a spade and neutering program? They should. All these cats should have loving homes as they will live longer and happier lives. Living outside there are so many dangers for them, regardless if most people are looking after them.

Awesome to hear that you're now a fellow Istanbullu, Doug. Sorry about the residence permit issue -- if it's any consolation, a lot of us old-timers are worried about that too. I moved to Istanbul this year too and at first I felt so horrible about the stray cats and dogs until I realized they are bougee 😅 they will not eat anything, they want the good food and kibble doesn’t cut it. I bought a dog kibble he smelled it and walked about. They are like nah I got options 😂
Lmao! This is helpful. I’m going to Istanbul end of the month and was going to bring my cheap Purina kibble and wet food (if they even allow it in carry on). Now I know that will probably not cut it with these babies. I’ll probably get some five star cuts of meats for them there hehehe
Welcome to Turkey! I moved to Germany about 8 months ago and really miss my country. :( Turkey has many good options to live there. For example, people are really friendly and helpful. Foods are delicious. Turkey has an excellent geographic situation. You can find the sea, mountains, and forests together. When you are bored in the evening, there are many clubs, and cafés open until morning. :) This country always sparkling. I recommend you to visit other cities too. Every city has a different culture. Have fun! :)

I love Turkey, visit every year. There is also another NY style bagel joint in Beyoğlu called New York Bagel and Coffee if you find yourself on the European side craving something. Down the street from it is a great chicken place called Beyoğlu Tavukçusu and as you probably know great antiques to be had in that area. Not sure how much you have travelled in the rest of the country but the Trabzon region is wonderful as well as around Urfa and Mardin. I hope you're able to get a residency permit, you're living my dream to live in Turkey for a bit. Also a good Turkish language school near Taksim called Royal Turkish, fantastic teachers.
Very interesting life you have 😛I don't know how one can drive anywhere with all the cats (and big big dogs) LOL...I love Tükiye (only visited Ankara) but I even had a Turkish angora cat hahaha! Me and my family only will have 3 full-days in Istanbul (well from Switzerland is only 3hrs flight) so we will try to cross and make it to Kadikoy. Enjoy and eat for me!
Love that you do these, Doug - and love to see that photo of your family! I haven't been a big world traveler, particularly to the areas you frequent, so it has been a wonderful education. Glad you're well!

This video was very nice. It was especially fun to watch the barber experience. Sihhatler Olsun :) Btw, It would be nice to watch your experience with your favorite Turkish food in another video.
Merhaba ben türküm ve istanbulla olan videonuzu sevdim en çokta çay kismi çok hosuma gitti yeni yerler yeni kültürler keşfetmeniz güzel size bol güzel bir hayat diliyorum😊
I just came across your channel today and saw your video with the lady in Baghdad. I really enjoyed it and wanted to see more so I subscribed. I clicked on this video because it intrigued me vastly. You have come to the same common reasoning as I did 4 years ago to move to Istanbul. I have been in the UK going into 24 years now, and because I travel a lot, I wanted a place where everything comes together in a balance to a degree, nothing is perfect of course, but Istanbul was way far ahead of everywhere else. So I decided to buy an apartment there. The only thing is, I researched the future planning of the city and realise most development is happening in the west, so I bought a place in Esenyurt. My place is a little bit bigger, but practically the same concept. Like very insignificant difference, but at least I have a location to use as a point of return. It's been years, since I had to take the bus when I'm there to reach the city, but now the metro line is opening, the airport is north of me and in the west a massive redevelopment is taking place. I am glad to hear of someone thinking similarly. I wish you the very best and also wished to say that Istanbul is a land of opportunity of you make it. So many amazing people, places, culture and international ties. It's truly the centre of the world if you do it right.
Man, as a 32 year old person who was born and raised in Istanbul, I could say that you are nailing it. Let me know if there is anything I could do for your permanent visa.
Türkiye needs some time on making everyone comfortable but its definitely one of the best places to get old in. But then, you are in Kadikoy. Not my favorite place in Istanbul but very nice place to be
04:22 lol i used to work in the area as a delivery driver and i figured which exact apartment you live immediately, should be expensive. come to yeldeğirmeni instead.
Why am I watching these strangers' videos? Do you know.? They show us things that we do not realize in the life we live in. When I watch, I am amazed. A Swiss person settled in Turkey. They asked him, "Why did you come to Turkey?" "There is a monotonous life in Switzerland. I get bored. But as you step into Turkey, you constantly encounter changes and get excited."
Great calm video. What I would love to know is why you picked Istanbul? I'm guessing the very busy airport is a factor, but I'm sure there were others.
Hello Doug! What’s up? I’m the translator (Tevfik) at the notary who helped with the notarization of your rental contract in February, becoming an instant subscriber. I’ve seen your travels throughout the year. Watching this video, I see that we’re incredibly close, like next street. We can hang out if you still have my number. I can be your guide and improve your Turkish so that you make your next vid in Turkish 😊
Hi Elvis. I live in Moda too and I have a question for you. Do you know if the notary can help in the preparation of a will, or should I see a lawyer for this? The reason I ask is that a few years ago the notary in Bahariye Caddesi said they could help with this issue. What's your advice on this?
@@ELVIS1975T Thanks for your reply. I'll visit the notary in Bahariye Caddesi again and see what they say. There was a period when I had to get my British passport translated for my ikamet tezkeresi which is when I asked them, but fortunately that requirement is now behind us.
wash the tea leafs with cold water first and then pour the hot water. Otherwise you are burning the tea leafs. I learnt it from a tea house owner, try it.
I love watching your videos, hope to see more Turkey vlogs soon. Thanks for showing us your daily lifestyles and bachelor's pad or apartment tour. You look more handsome in your new haircut. You better teach English language there also, because it's one of the most indemand job to foreigners living in Turkey based on Google. Goodluck in your residency permit visa application. ❤️

Very nice. I grew up in Erenkoy - Caddebostan back in the days of two story villas. I attended Lycee Saint Joseph which is next to Moda. It has nice grounds. Moda has a yacht club. There are also nice little neighborhoods all along the Bosphorus like Kuzguncuk, Kanlica, ... Yenikoy across in Europe along the Bosphorus has very nice Yalis, waterfront villas. If you can get into one of those that would be nice. Some of them are historic.
Hi my husband and I just came across your channel! We are wanting to live in Turkey for long term , can you do a video on how it all works when going to Turkey for 8-9 months and how it all worked out for you. Thank you
Sushmita: was on a Turkiye tour in September - city hopping 7 different places and hotels - was like the amazing race - miss it so much. If I had a choice, likewize would move there in a flash. You speak the language very well. Are you going for classes?
Hey Doug. I am from Azerbaijan. And I love you so much. Your videos and youu are really great. I saw your video(Travelling Azerbaijan) But it was 2years ago ( Ithink)I leraned a lot from you. Thank you very much, Pleaseee likeee
It's the city that's like, 'Why choose between Europe and Asia when you can have both?' Seriously, it's the land where one side prefers baklava for breakfast, and the other side is all about croissants. Visited it before as we filmed one of our episode last year and with my first hand experience, no wonder you have chosen it. I would love to go back there for sure.
Enjoy being in Estanbul amazing city ...you have nice colection i have many thinks for queen elazibath its a cigarit box from 1958 and lady Daina marrege gifts ..i hope to meet you i live in baghdad when you come bake sorry i am not very good in inglish Good luck🎉
I come across your videos just now. Thank you for explaining Moıda so well. It is kind a funny that you have one of Saddam's watches for his generals. Were you in the service? I hope you enjoy your stay. Mutlaka Kapalıçarşı'ya git. Baklava ye. Yabancılara çok güzel tadım yapıyorlar. Kadıköy' den Eminönü'ne oradan Kavaklara vapurla gitmeyi unutma. I hope you understand what I have written. Hello to you from European side!
I also moved to Istanbul from a very small city : (( still can not used to it super chaotic and a lot of people and I know barely nobody.. I wish you best memories here tho!!
As a Turk living in Istanbul, I think you live in the most beautiful part of Istanbul. The European side has a large population, many tourists, and prices are expensive. The Anatolian side is calmer, more local, but if we talk specifically about Kadıköy, it is more liberal. Kadıköy, Moda was the right choice. I hope you get your residence permit, Istanbul is the most beautiful city in the world, being crowded means an increase in the rental price for locals like me, but we can also share this city with people who will add value to Istanbul.
Hey Doug; how are you keeping and how is your stay so far in Istanbul? My name is Ben, am a kind of US citizen who lives in Türkiye since 9/11 event( btw, we don’t use the word Turkey for the country anymore but Türkiye instead). If you have any questions or/and need any infos, just let me know, I’ll be more happy to help. Enjoy your stay in Türkiye
Türkiye'ye,İstanbul'a hoşgeldin umarım güzel deneyimler yaşarsın.İyi birine benziyorsun senin gibi iyi kişilerin burada yaşaması bizim için de güzel olur fakat çok fazla yabancı mülteci geldi araplarla çok farklıyız kültür her şey cok farklı.halk daha fazla yabancıya karşı çıktı yasalar değişmiş bu yüzden ama senin durumuna üzüldüm umarım izin alabilirsin ❤
I just loved Istanbul Turkey. It has got some very posh beautiful neighbourhoods you'd dream to live in. The food was the best. Definitely one of my favourite cities and countries. I liked it better than Greece and Egypt although those two were quite spectacular on their own. However I'd never leave the USA it would be weird. If I would ever think of leaving Carthage I'd pick the United States of A not another place no questions asked
It’s better than all Balkan and other Middle Eastern countries because while they have certain great stuff, we have everything they have as the former empire.
Travel with me! www.dougbarnardtravel.com/trips

I enjoyed watching your video. Success in every step

I live in the Asian side too (Atasehir) .. since 6 years and I love going to kadikoy and set next to the sea.
Glad your living life bro!
My dream place turkey❤
Why am I watching these strangers' videos? Do you know.? They show us things that we do not realize in the life we live in. When I watch, I am amazed. A Swiss person settled in Turkey. They asked him, "Why did you come to Turkey?" "There is a monotonous life in Switzerland. I get bored. But as you step into Turkey, you constantly encounter changes and get excited."
Great calm video. What I would love to know is why you picked Istanbul? I'm guessing the very busy airport is a factor, but I'm sure there were others.
i talked about why at the barber shop!
Hello Doug!
@@DikWhite I’ll ask today and reply again
@@DikWhite They said you can come to the notary and they can inform you on the procedures
@@ELVIS1975T Thanks for your reply. I'll visit the notary in Bahariye Caddesi again and see what they say. There was a period when I had to get my British passport translated for my ikamet tezkeresi which is when I asked them, but fortunately that requirement is now behind us.
Love Istanbul 😊🇹🇷
wash the tea leafs with cold water first and then pour the hot water.
Enjoy the fullest extent new home mate
Love your Turkish
Hoşgeldin
You should visit Eskisehir, you would fall in love with that city
Great tourist selfies, thanks!
I'm watching right now
The way you say psipsi to cats so cute and so turkish 😊
Allah elimizdekilerin kıymetini zamanında farketmeyi hakkıyla doya doya tadını çıkaracak şekilde yaşamayı, tatmayı, bilmeyi şükretmeyi hepimize nasip eylesin, içindeki maddi manevi tüm güzelliklerini, hayırlarını, özgürlüğünü, afiyetini daim eylesin. Canım ülkem canım memleketim.
saç tıraşın çok iyi olmuş, beğendim, sıhhatler olsun. çay hazırlamanı da beğendim, güzel olmuş.
Welcome to Istanbul! I hope you'll like Türkiye. I'd recommend you to go other cities too.
You have to do a lot more videos about Turkey please ! And show us your language learning journey
Welcome to Istanbul! İstanbul'a hoşgeldin! 🎉🙌🏻
Hi my husband and I just came across your channel! We are wanting to live in Turkey for long term , can you do a video on how it all works when going to Turkey for 8-9 months and how it all worked out for you. Thank you
try preparing the tea with cold water from start ;)
Are you sure you visit istanbul
Welcome to İstanbul 🎉
You should pour out the first bit hot water you pass through the tea it's bitter.
Welcome to our country, my friend, I hope you love us

I come across your videos just now. Thank you for explaining Moıda so well. It is kind a funny that you have one of Saddam's watches for his generals. Were you in the service? I hope you enjoy your stay.
Mutlaka Kapalıçarşı'ya git. Baklava ye. Yabancılara çok güzel tadım yapıyorlar. Kadıköy' den Eminönü'ne oradan Kavaklara vapurla gitmeyi unutma.
I hope you understand what I have written. Hello to you from European side!
Yo Doug this is really cool how did I not know you do this !?!
hhahah. the way you calling the cats is very accurate :D "ps psspsps"
Welcome ❤
I also moved to Istanbul from a very small city : (( still can not used to it super chaotic and a lot of people and I know barely nobody.. I wish you best memories here tho!!
The water right next to the rubbish bin, nice.
You're right, Moda is a good choice, I've been living here for over 20 years and still enjoy what this neighbourhood has to offer.
Most lebral place in stanbul kadikoy i really agreed that😂😂
I haven't been to Istanbul since 1993. Definitely need to make a return visit soon.
yalla habibi!
You should try putting tea into hot water not the other way around for once and see the difference. ❤
Just got on board to your channel Doug.
Welcome!
nice tour!! 🎉😊
