    If you think about it, Apostles are cowards. Every single one had to make a sacrifice to get what they want. Guts acquired his strength through hard work. Zodd is a warrior, however his strength is lazily won. That’s what makes Guts human.

    • @dancreary3340
      @dancreary3340 Год назад +397

      I think that lazily won i dea can be argued, like for Griffith to get to where he was from where he started was an insane undertaking, and then he made a ruthless decision to get that extra power. To become am apostle or godhand, you have to be in a dire situation with something important to lose which was likely not easy to gain, for some of them at least, I would say rosine would be a notable exception. And to your credit, a lot of apostles certainly become cowards who abuse their power in a hedonistic way, but I dont think you can say that about zodd based on how he conducts himself. I think he gained the foundation of his ability as a human, amd pushed himself further on as an apostle. I don't see him having any kind of fear of dying, even if guts had him on the ropes. I think his back story is probably somewhere between guts and gambino, like he was a skilled warrior, but maybe fell ill or got old or got crippled, so the despair of being denied a warriors death is what drove him to become am apostle.

    I love the dynamic between Guts and Zodd. Guts riding Zodd to fight Ganishka is easily one of the most badass moments in the entire series. Right now I wanna say that when they do have their eventual duel, I think Guts will win, however I'm not sure if Zodd will necessarily die as a result.

    I think Zodd *wants* to die, but he's not willing to just give up his life. Being an apostle, he knows about their nature and knows that with being an apostle there is physical strength, but not spiritual or mental. In the worst case he just says "It's zoddin' time!" and then zodds all over the floor. He's searching for ultimate strength, it makes perfect sense to ally with Griffith, granted he sees the ultimate strength potential in Guts. It puts him in an adverse position to Guts.
    I see both Zodd and Skull Knight as "Guts gone wrong"; Zodd gave his humanity and in turn became a monster and perhaps grew remorseful over his decision. SK gave up on his humanity and is now a hollow shell, which doesn't have any real reason to exist anymore.
    As for the finale, I think it'll be Zodd's blood to give the Dragonslayer the final and needed tempering.

    Both Zodd and Skull Knight symbolize two different forks in a road that Guts can take. Will Guts give in and use a Behelit damning himself and forsaking his loved ones as a sacrifice like Zodd or will he continue to fight against the Godhand humanity intact until his mortal body can't hold up to the stress of the Berserker armor and be forced to find another means to maintain his will to defeat the Godhand. Knowing Guts' character and the basis it has with philosophy he will forge his own unique road struggling all the while.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Chudor/Tudor battle! Guts’ sword breaks, and Zodd, observing the battle at a distance, throws his sword at Guts so the swordsman is able to defend himself. Zodd has invested in Guts’ survival more than once. The second investment (after giving into the causality of the crimson behelit), the Tudor battle, was a belief that Guts would someday prove challenging, and thus, not boring for Zodd to fight. But as you mentioned, the scale is now teetering in Guts’ favor. And Zodd has full agency. Excellent video!

    • @spicydiarrhea5662
      @spicydiarrhea5662 Год назад +1

      @The Black Swordsman sacrifice must be the most important thing, and as for becoming a godhand it also needed to be something big, all that blood and meat went through him at the altar.
      There are no loose ends. Femto doesn't give a f about guts as a treat at all (see the most recent chapter - it's back) and who knows, maybe he wants himself to die by his hand someday as he fulfills his dream fully.
      When griffith was becoming femto (idea of evil chapter) he said he want's to die - if there was no error in translation, a long path is set for guts and everything femto does is to push him forward to fight and become stronger... even the lost hand contributed somehow to that, without the cannon he would be dead by now.

    I can imagine Zodd walking down a dark hallway littered with the mutilated corpses of dozens of apostles. (Just like Guts was forced to walk down a hall littered with the bodies of his own men, before meeting Zodd for the first time) He reaches the end to find Guts, almost completely consumed by the beast of darkness in his Berserker Armor. This time Zodd is in the same situation as Guts was all those years ago. His objective is no longer victory, but rather survival.

  • @franciscvmpbell
    @franciscvmpbell Год назад +258

    I either see Guts killing him, or Zodd betraying the godhand and doing his own thing, kind of in a similar fashion to how Guts left Griffith to follow his own path.
    Remember how Zodd remarks that he’s taking the same path as skull knight when Guts dons the armour. Zodd has never fought Guts in the berserker armour, but we’ve seen him slaughter apostles, monsters, a sea god, and put Grunbeld on the back foot while wearing it (albeit shattering his bones and almost dying, but still, I think in power terms Grunbeld is second). In the first battle between Skull knight and Zodd, skull bro wins, even Rickert remarks that he outclassed Zodd, cut off his arm without a scratch himself. I still think skull knight is stronger even against the berserker armour, probably due to that dimension cutting sword and the fact that he knows everything. But I also think Guts is closing that gap, enough to kill Zodd if it came to it.
    Or, Zodd leaves. The creepy witch girl that loves Griffith when speaking to Zodd said, roughly, “the one that you are drawn to, your counterpart”. You touched on it in the video, but there’s clear parallels between them. Maybe Zodd himself, who ultimately only seeks the strong to fight them (strange how he doesn’t fight Griffith then, maybe he knows he’ll die very quickly), he might up and leave, continue his path and seek further strength. Maybe a defeat by Guts could spark that search, maybe discontent at ending up a servant. Who knows.
    Either way, rest in peace, Kentaro Miura.

So many people will be pissed but Griffith will be redeemed to a sense. That issue was meant to justify Griffiths actions which to me, sucks ass. I think that's a big part of their dynamic. Zodd sees Guts in himself, and since he couldn't get his strength in his human form and turned into an Apostle to do so, Guts does it while keeping his humanity. And that I think will be their eventual team up against Griffith. Completing a cycle these 3 have had with each other from the beginning.

    I think there is also supposed to be a parallel in guts getting the berserker armor in order to reach such power levels to match the apostles. Zodd and every other apostle makes a sacrifice for power and are transformed into some wicked form. A selfish sacrifice that grants them extreme power. Whereas Guts does almost the exact same thing except he sacrifices his own body and mind in the armor for this power, that’s the difference between guts and the apostles. They get their power at the expense of others and he gains strength by sacrificing himself for others. Guts is almost exactly the same as any apostle, especially Zodd, in his need for power, but it’s this choice of sacrifice that makes him a hero. He’s still a monster like Zodd but becoming that monster makes him a hero.

    I love this. I feel like there's a message also about where either of their strength is derived. When Guts goes berserk its his hatred allowing the armor to take over and even Guts thinks about the source of his strength as being hatred. When Schierke first bonds with the armor to help control it, she even tells him to make it his volition rather than his hatred the source of his strength, and that allows them to stay in control of the armor. Its not just that Guts refuses to sacrifice his volition or his love, it's increasingly that that volition is the source of his strength. On the other hand, Guts body is deteriorating, maybe irreversibly, putting him in a sticky place at the limit of his strength. Guts isn't a typical overpowered protagonist, I think that his companions are increasingly going to be crucial to future battles.

    I think Zodds flight is probably going to be crucial.
    As far as I can remember we’ve only seen femto fly once, right after his transformation to descend to guts and casca.
    That’s kind of important since griffiths big request was “I want wings” and yet he never uses his own. He always uses Zodd to fly
    Zodd’s flying was the reason he teamed up with Guts to defeat ganishka. Guts had the sword but could reach high enough so needed Zodd.
    There could be some symbolism with Griffith always flying on Zodd and not using his own wings. He literally wants other people to lift him up which mirrors his sacrifice. His path up to the castle is on top of a mountain of corpses.
    But that doesn’t change the fact that he has wings of his own. If Zodd and guts team up to fight again it could be another airborn battle against griffith

I guess the first anime showed a lot of physical similarities between Zodd and Guts. Some coloured manga slides used in the anime were also hinting that resemblance. And that strange bond between the two. Dunno, smells to me like something that happened between the lines.

    I remember, a few panels after Guts kills Adonis by accident, that Guts saw himself for a brief moment to be as terrible of a monster as Zodd was. Back then he was doing Griffith's bidding, so is Zodd at the present moment. Coincidence? Or Foreshadowing? 🤔

  • @Cernunnnos
    @Cernunnnos Год назад +26

    I think Zodd is part of Geiseric, his beast of Darkness. It's pretty well worn ground that much of Berserk is based on Jungian writing. Well, I think Geiseric failed his individuation. His mind split into two parts after years of struggling after their eclipse. He split into the Skull Knight who is the embodiment of his will (higher consciousness) and Zodd, who is is the embodiment of his beast of darkness (his shadow.)
    The fact that Zodd submits to Griffith and the events of the eclipse happened after Guts left his influence is important. Because giving in to the beast of darkness is submitting your will to causality. It is mans will to be more than his baser desires that elevates us.
    Guts is walking the same knife edge that Gesierc walked. Where his need for revenge is driving him forward, but the rage is constantly threatening to consume his will.
    Guts has to fully individuate. He needs to accept his shadow without letting it consume him. Separating your shadow from your ego, as SK seems to have, isn't what Jung argued was important. He specifically talked about accepting it as part of you but not allowing it to take the wheel. This process will be what puts Guts on even footing with Griffith.
    I don't know if Guts will eventually beat Zodd, but I think Zodd's ultimate fate will be with SK. Whether they re-merge, or kill each other. I don't know.
    There's too much in the air to call it either way.

      So there's atleast aesthetic iconography that supports the idea.
      I think I've seen one other lore channel mention the idea in passing before too I think.

    Sonia told Zodd he would have to choose "to again battle the sword that once cut your flesh or to make it your own weapon," between "beast and warrior" as does his "counterpart" Guts. Guts will fight Zodd again, and he may face the choice of either giving in to the beats of darkness and killing Zodd or sparing him (beast or warrior). His decision to spare him may be what wins Zodd over.
    Guts went up against a god, and he did so by slaying a giant heart covered with eyes, a description that matches the Idea of Evil. I could see Guts doing something similar to the Idea of Evil, but there's just one problem. The Idea of Evil exists in the Abyss, and while Guts's armor can do many things, it can't fly.
    Zodd, on the other hand, can. He can take Guts to the Idea of Evil on his back like he did with Ganeshka, even though he knows it might potentially mean he won't be an apostle anymore of the Idea dies.

    Interesting take but I just cant see Zodd teaming up in any sort of real way. The first team up was coincidence, circumstance and a shared enemy. If anything, I see Guts giving Zodd his honorable death and Zodd finding some peace after a life of sin. Another situation is Zodd defying Grifith, maybe not exactly teaming with Guts, but maybe just a moment of hesitation against Guts in a fight - which at that point causes Griffith to kill Zodd out of anger at his defiance - This would play into Griffiths willingness to sacrifice or execute his closest ally and showing Guts that Griffith truly is the monster he has become. Seeing Zodd hesitate and be slain, would give Guts that extra push to defeat Griffith.

    Guts might become the Old Griffith and duel Zodd on the condition of winning his sword in Battle. Zodd being probably lives by the mercenary Code and would oblige.
    Or possibly neither can overcome the other, and a deal is made, they kill Griffith together, and the Skull knight together, perhaps both Zodd and Guts are characterized by having a godlike mortal enemy that outclasses them they cannot defeat alone.
    I remember an interview with Mr Miura where he said he views Guts and Griffith as roles people play depending on whether or not they are in power. It would be interesting to see Guts take on Griffith like roles. That would also tie into guts becoming the equal that opposes Griffith

    It would be cool if Guts would get a powerup something like he can combine his astral body with his own body since he s always been so close to death ( being born from underneath a dead corpse ) and make him have what powers he would have as an "apostle" or "godhand" like his way to tap into the " evil " power, so he can slash Griffith but still be theoretically a Human. And he gets rid of the armor aka his beast and he finally gets redemption... That would be a happy ending I guess.

    "Guts would grow to love and have strong loyalty to Casa and vice versa." Casa doesn't love Guts equally. Gut loves her far more and her love isn't even close. The fact that he didn't let himself go into a regressive state to hide from all the trauma events. Even while baby sitting a her while she was in the mental state of a toddler doing everything he could for her. To getting her to the place she needed to be so that she could get her mind back. When she does finally get her mind back and they attempt to reunite, we see all her fond memories of Guts then all the events that put her into that state. Then she has ptsd collapses etc, we all remember what happened. But Guts CHOOSE to not let the events and all the hard ships his faced up to this point to stop him. Even when he realizes that he can no longer be near her bc the sight of him triggers his ptsd and if he attempts to talk to her he has to tip toe the conversation otherwise she gets flashbacks again. So he chooses to distance himself bc he loves and cares for her so much that if her just being back to normal AND meaning that he can no longer be anywhere near her he is satisfied. Not once after Casa collapsing do we see her trying to push herself to recover so that she can be with the man you are claiming that she loves equally. (Yes its only been a few days maybe not even a week since she got her memories back. Random asshole on the internet.) However we know that she was semi cognitive while in her toddler state bc she said so.(chapter 359 from Casa talking to Gut " The things during our journey it's like i was dreaming i was someone else it's hazy." Even in 355 she says something very similar. Then she remembers Judeau and ptsd attack happens. When she gains her memory back she knows everything that "Elaine" saw and felt.) From that you can say that she was there mentally sometimes but didn't fight to get back and over come the trauma to see her beloved partner as Gut did and continues to do (until the latest releases.). Dont get me wrong it would be fucking sweet if she really did love Guts equally. Maybe the up coming chapter over the next 25 years will prove that she does. Obliviously we needed her in that state to progress the story and character development. Anyways thanks for reading my Ted talk. Great video btw.

    I agree 100% Maaan I’ve thought about this concept for so long. I honestly don’t think Zodd serves the godhand bc he wants to I think he does bc he has too. I’m pretty sure it’s clear to everybody that Zodd has a lot of respect for guts but I don’t think it’s just bc he’s a phenomenal swordsman. I think the other reason is the same reason SK has such a great respect for Guts & that is Guts consistently fighting against causality, up until this point in the series theirs no character other than Guts who’s been strong enough to not succumb to causality but to overcome it. Guts has done it & continues to keep doing it I believe that SK & Zodd see that and truly respect it bc he’s doing what they couldn’t at some point in their lives they gave in to causality. In chapter 277 Guts is referred to as Zodds counterpart I think Guts will defeat Zodd like how he did on the hill of swords but he’ll defeat him while he’s in full apostle form & when he does I think we’ll see Zodds true colors about everything & he might jump ship from the godhand and join Guts. That’s My theory anyways.

    At 8:02 , i have an idea of what that reason could be. Zodd lives for battles and wars right? Well if Griffith sees his dream through and creates a, "Utopia" kingdom, uniting everyone under his rule, then he'd be essentially ending all battles and wars, which Zodd lives for. I think that would be a good enough reason for him to align with Guts.

    What if the connection between Zod and Skull Knight is a little more literal? What if as part of whatever happened to Skull Knight he split into two beings, and HIS inner demon gained a body of its own rather than him becoming a full blown apostle? Perhaps that is why Zod and Skull Knight always end in a draw when they fight. They are both born from King Gizerek. Perhaps we will see something similar happen to Guts soon where the behlit activates and his "beast of darkness" becomes a being all of its own. Perhaps as a result of combining the Berzerk armor and a behlit?
