I have had this machine since 2006 and it really has taken me a bit of time to perfect my craft. Couple things i did over time...i bought a proper tamper...52mm from amazon...the breville spoon scoop is useless. The next thing i did was get a burr grinder (preground coffee really is not that great, 5hough this machine can handle it fine)...a Capresso Infinity grinder works well with this machine. Third thing was i purchased a cheap scale and measured the coffee to put i to the portafilter. 10 grams for the single and 16 to 17 grams for the double. When brewing i make sure the grinder is fine enough that the machine does not struggle, but it takes a good 25-30 seconds to brew on the double basket. Watch the colour of the espresso being dispensed...the moment it turns blond...turn off the machine...you are done. It takes a bit of time fiddling with the grind level to get the shot just right. As for steam milk if you dont want excess foam take off the sleeve. I never use the sleeve on mine...simpler cleanup too. There are many youtube videos on proper milk steaming techniques.
Thank you @Tood Soden. I am fighting with this machine in order to know how much grams of espresso should I put, sometimes I can't do the coffe, the water doesn't come. ,:(
I just acquired one of these as a hand me down. From reading your comment I need a better tamper. When I run my machine it doesn’t come out like it does in this video. Hers in the video drip nearly the entire 25 seconds. If that how it should be? Mine turns to a stream pretty quickly.
The left button on the right panel gives you a regulated coffee shot. It will stop automatically. The button you had glowing is for the steam and brings the machine to a hotter temperature for steam. You should use the left one for the coffee shot and the right for steam
THANK YOU so much for this video. I am staying at my sisters while she is out of town and they have this but I had no idea how to use it. This video explained everything.
Just to quickly say, it is best to froth your milk first then make the shot. The shot is at such a high temperature that if you let it sit for too long without putting it into something, it burns. The shot dies. This makes the coffee taste burnt. Best taste is to pour the shot into the milk or cream as soon as its done.
Raul Herrera this is not always true. If you don't have your grind and tamp perfect, steam your milk and then brew a shot that chokes the machine, then you just wasted your milk. If you preheat your cup do your shot, it does not sit THAT LONG or degrade that quickly while you steam milk.
@@ThorMaxx The preheating cup is an excellent step. Steaming/ frothing does not need to be in any particular order. Just try to have a very pre-heated cup and follow through quickly with the milk steaming / frothing after pouring your shot into the cup you are using.
I like how many times you said "I don't know what it's called" yet you kept on going. thanks for the video, I think your grinds are too fine, the drip should be one continuous line for 25-30 seconds.
For someone that sold coffee and these machines you did a better job with the milk that the pro s sweetheart because that's froth as it should be well done keep doing what your doing . warmly from New Zealand although do give it a good push down great Job
Thank you for this tutorial, I was just gifted one of these and had no idea what to do, I will unbox it today & see how it looks. Very good presentation & very good explanations & very easy to follow. 💯😍👍😋😃
I have the same machine for 10 yrs now, the Duo Temp 800ESXL. Love it. The "thing" with a handle is called a porta-filter. The single and double shot filters are double walled. Good for ground coffee or someone starting. You can purchase single wall, the size is 51mm. Great video by the way.
Michelle B the single walled basket really is a good investment and this machine can still brew a nice quality shot. However the single walled basket is not offered by breville... and some are not well made on Amazon...i only paid $8 for mine, but the inside had a bevel edge with a 2 marking that would cause my tamper to jam up inside. I was about to press out the bevel edge and it works well now.
@@ThorMaxx - My machine started to have a small leak at the head group, but was still working fine. So I decided instead of having it fixed, to buy myself a new machine at Christmas of 2018 : A Bambino 699$. With all kind of coupons and negotiating I paid 450$. Putting the porta-filter, the machine was going left and right since it was so light. Only double walls baskets. The finish was chrome only, fingerprints magnet. I called Breville for I was so disappointed. They sent me a Barista Express. It is an older model, but I am now very, very satisgied and happy with it.
thanks for your video, I am new at this and your video was great for a newby like me. I appreciate your honesty, we don't all know the right lingo but i understood your wording .
Thanks for the video.... I had a good time laughing as I have no idea how the gadgets are called either so that make your explanation more understandable for me..... love it.
So much wrong with this coffee making haha. The coffee is NOT meant to have a pool of water on top. It's meant to have a slightly moist "puck" off coffee left in the basket. The frothing jug needs to be held at a point that it introduces air into the milk without creating bubbles. Should be spinning clockwise and tilted slightly for this machine with the wand towards one side. When it's done the milk will be velvety/silky and this is called microfoam. The texture of the milk can dramatically enhance the taste of the coffee. Also, 180 is far too hot. Shoot for 140-160 like the other commenter mentioned. Also, that person you heard say to tamp with 30lbs of pressure was 100% correct.
Jessica Sit cleaning is easy. Dump or scrape out the grinds...rinse the portafilter under the tap, run the espresso mode for a second with the portafilter out to clean the water screen, rinse you milk pitcher and you are done.
Does anyone else's machine stay hot/warm long after shutting it off with the power button? The cup warming tray (top of the machine) will still be warm the next day when I come back to use it the next day. Like I said I shut it off after using it, but the power cord stays plugged in. I don't think it did this when I first got it, but I've only had it for less than month now and it was missing the big catch tray for the first work (bought a used one) and perhaps I just didn't use it.
That shot was waaaayyy too long, get yourself a grinder and buy whole beans from a local roaster and then set the grind for your machine. Buying preground beans means they are stale and not ground specifically for your machine. To froth milk you have to hold the jug and control the height of the tip of the steam wand in your milk. I suggest watching some videos on technique. You won't believe what taste results you can get which will be so much better than what you are getting. Also, you have to purge the steam wand before use to get rid of any excess water.
1. Your grounds are not fine enough 2. Channeling water 💦 was traveling between the grounds make sure your puck is packed 3. You brew too long. Use scale and only extract what you want
Matty Klous this machine was out in mid 2000's. We have had ours for over ten years now...and the 'Duo Pro' was the update to this machine about 5 years ago.
This machine had a pod adapter that allows you to use pre ground espresso filter pods...i am not sure who even sells them anymore though. Mine originally came with a sample but i never went out and bought espresso this way. Whole bean is so much better.

Todd, are you sure 52 mm tamper? I spoke with Breville they recommend 54 mm but sounded unsure thanks.
I also think it's a 54mm tampe8as well!

They're so bad for the environment and nothing is better than do your own coffee with your own hands.
