  • And now, for something completely different: The ‪@ford‬ Maverick Hybrid. After driving the Ford Maverick HEV a couple of hundred miles around South Florida, MotoMan learns that the Maverick is not just a US$20,000 hard to segment small truck, rather it is something greater that more OEMs beyond Ford should be building.

You were so right about the color option availabilities at the end. Ford is my favorite domestic company. But they seem to have a lot of less bright people working or making decisions for them. Eg..this UV shares platform with the Bronco sport. But the Bronco sport doesn't have a hybrid option. People would have to buy the weird looking Escape to get hybrid. Why why why, Ford? Or make an F150 available as EV and hybrid, but not the Expedition? People shopping for family vehicles care more about fuel efficiency, or EV than Truck buyers.

Honestly the driving experience was very composed, competent, like the comparable German cars of the day with reliable systems like the Lexus and Acura competitors. What also drew me to the car was the relative exclusivity. The same desire for modern, attractive, competent and more exclusive/less popular, later drove me to buy post mid 90’s Audi’s and later generation Volvo’s.😃

They need one more adjustment to their options to make this work for me. I want a FX4 AWD with the twin clutch rear locker and 4k tow. Currently you can only get the rear locker with the tremor package which knocks the tow capacity all the way down to 2000 lbs. This would make a great little tow rig for atv's and side by sides and having the rear locker is nice when you end up parking on soft ground at the trails after a rain.

The normal FX AWD has a haldex unit and a dirt and ruts mode as well as a sand mode that does a very good job of distributing power- when it senses too much slip on one side, it sends power to the opposite wheel. With the Tow package, it has a built in trailer brake controller.

When they first became available in September 21, I called all over looking for one and realized that any place that had one wanted a premium. But I finally found a place that had one in shop, but the guy who was buying it had not put money down yet, and they were willing to let me test drive it. I got there half an hour before the guy got there with his down payment and got to see it in the flesh and drive it briefly. I went home that evening and ordered one direct from Ford thru a local dealer who promised that Ordered vehicles would be sold at sticker. I ordered the AWD version with the 4K towing package, rear window, bedliner, and XLT package with 110 power in the rear seat and bed. I took delivery in late March of 22. It came to 31k.
Ive had it a year now and I could not be more happy with it. My only quibbles are the gear select knob has no stops, and the thing does not remember what mode you selected last time you drove it. And you have to turn off the auto engine stop function every time you fire it up if you, like me, can’t stand the engine cutting off at every stoplight. It carries 1500 lbs of cargo for real, without much impact on performance and the 250 hp 8 speed with haldex drive in sport mode is pretty damn zippy. The bed is designed around carrying 4X8 sheet goods, and has a lot of other little nuances that really make the truck a worker. And sorry, but I Love the cactus grey color. White is too blah, and darker colors get too hot in the southern calif. sun. Although the truck does look great on both the pale blue, and the orange if you can find it.

So far I love my Maverick Lariat. I would say the interior definitely has a Scandinavian flavor, bringing to mind Ikea--from the door handles to the panels and material choices. Minimalist, but highly functional. The ride is amazingly good--much better than what I was expecting coming from a Mercedes. The suspension is however what I would call tight, when you hit a bump or rough patch you will feel it but on smooth surfaces it's like glass. Love the fact that it came equipped with Michelin tires from the factory.

I have a 2017 Bmw X1 with the turbo 4 and I can get nearly 40mpg with the ac on the whole time on the freeway if I keep it around 70 mph. If you drive it like a maniac and don't care about mpg, you can still get the low 30s. That's not bad for a heavy car with plenty of zip. Hybrid advantage is driving in the city. I can barely get 20 in the city why hybrids get 40 easily.

Personally, I like the interior and dash area. Looks simple and clean. I’m not expecting anything fancy at that price point. The 12v socket in the bed is nice lagniappe for Ford to do for their customers. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all of the difference….
What are the rear seats and space size wise like?
For the money, looks like a good truck.
P.S. I still like the graphics page with performance numbers however I don’t think they should cover up showing something about the vehicle. In this case it was the only opportunity to see the engine bay. Perhaps use the graphics page with nothing behind it (or use the MotoMan logo as backdrop) while still listening to your audio?

I was told about 6 months, do not believe them ,if you want one.its going to take a long time.

The Maverick's bed is in actual practice larger than the Toyota Tacoma 4dr. The Maverick's payload is also lower than the Tacoma's.
In all fairness, the Tacoma is more off road machine than the Maverick's currently capable of being. They're 2 very different platforms, truck vs exceptionally well dressed 'minivan'-ish utility vehicle.
    In fact, I wouldn't be the 1st to call simply a "utility-vehicle".
To a great many, it's more usable than a 4dr Tacoma or a Chevy Avalanche (another vehicle with similar bed size.)

Every car review talks about the dash pad material and how it has to feel. In 50 years of being a passenger or driver in vehicles, I've never groped the dash pad. Most of the time I can't even reach the dash given my seat position. Do people actually care what the dash is made of for feel vs looks? Arm rests and the top of the door panels sure. Those you put your arm on, but the dash? I just don't get it.

Good question, one that falls under the heading of different strokes for different folks. In this case, a lot of folks. Perceived quality has a HUGE impact on real world sales. If a prospective buyer sits in a car and it is a sea of hard, dark, cheap plastic it is off-putting. Why? Because, yes, you spend a lot of time behind the wheel but also your perception of value is thrown off by seeing how they arrive at a price. As such, the likes of Toyota and others have invested a surprisingly small amount of real money - think like US$10 in actual materials cost - to change the perception of value and quality. Very good to see Ford apply this lesson at this level even though they may not at higher levels.

I inadvertently referred to a 'yellow' in the episode when it in reality it was an orange. That one looks good, but ups the price by US$495. There is no yellow on offer. As for the free colors, I like the blue but being only offered with dark color interiors, would shy away from that due to the lack of contrast.

Maybe next year we could actually buy one. But I am not holding my breath on that one. this is not meant to slam ford maverick in any way. but how does it make sense to produce more vehicles you can not supply in numbers that don't even meet demand? yet plan to produce even more types that require even more materials you claim you can't get??? The same for other manufacturers. By the time Ford get's it ship in order I suspect other will develop a truck to compete and remove their market share. They could of had it all but failed to do so.
