- Of the many homunculi scattered throughout the known world and beyond, perhaps none have inspired such wonder as the children of the skies. Called sirens and harpies by the Assembly, these winged beings mostly live in the Ni’Khari mesas north of the known world, though there are harpies also found in the highlands of Arvel and Pakardia, along with reports in Kairul.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

Love this month's series on Kaimere's semi-civilized "monsters".
@@veryljavier2984 These homunculi creatures (artificially engineered from mostly human/homonid stock) seem to be either living on the margins of mainstream human civilization or are scavanger/hunter gatherer communities in the wilderness, so semi-civilised applies.
I love hearing about Kaimere’s supernatural creatures, like the trolls and harpies and I can’t wait to see what other monsters the First Children created. If I was one, I’d choose either a vampire or one of the skin-changers.
I think that having the first children creating homunculi opens up the possibility for many interesting "pseudo-hybrid" creatures.
I can't wait to see even more unique creations of the first children! Especially since you mentioned beastfolk, and there are many weird and wonderful beasts in Kaimere, the possibilities are endless.

How does magic work?
Like how does one portal basically email the other portal the animals it harvests from one planet?
@@battlefora3dscollab Leading theory is more or less using radio or some other frequency, at least back in its natural state. Now that the process is basically instantaneous (15 minute time lapse thought to be more regarding how long it takes to incinerate and copy rather than travel time), most think the First Children incorporated quantum entanglement so you can effectively type out the genetic code on Earth, and the Kaimere side then immediately knows what it needs to assemble a copy

@@battlefora3dscollab Pretty much! In its natural state, the portal did surveys of the territory then asked the Earth satellite to send it stuff, but these days it just replicates whatever is on the other side when the door is opened.
The Prairie and Hill ogres are my favourite of the first children creations but the harpies are always something that facilitates me in every story they pop up
I would say that I am surprised that the first children did not create gigantic terrestrial harpies with terror bird bases, gigantic pterosaurs, or with dragons.
But maybe they did and those harpies simply disappeared in the age of demons...
Indeed. It's important to keep in mind the homunculi alive today are only the scant few that survived. Most Class II and III homunculi can't reproduce outside of making thralls, so those who were able to had an obvious advantage in establishing themselves.
Kaimeran harpies are very cool because as many people have pointed out you always find ways to integrate mythical creatures into your world and they fit very well. I like that we heard some of their folklore in the intro. In general I'm glad that you got the opportunity to cover some of the major types of homunculi in greater detail this month.
I wonder if the First Children ever created something similar but with pterosaur characteristics? If they did, it could be among the many extinct forms of homunculi, but a human with pterosaur features seems like a cool design idea.

Songbird's Lament was easily my favourite story from the first anthology, and i love that this video confirms the existence of more harpy lineages! Whats the full list of colours looking like now?
Question: The Red, Gold and Black Harpy matrilines are all based off of the corresponding species of teratorn on the prairie, so what were the other lineages predominantly descended from? I know some other birds of prey were incorporated in, but since the prairie harpies seem so tied to the three teratorn species, itd be interesting to know what the other colours are primarily based off of

Thank you! Yeah I really enjoyed that one, and Yalena will definitely appear in future works. There are definitely other harpy lineages, though it is unconfirmed if the winged beings spotted in Pakardia and Arvel are harpies mentioned in the opening legend, or if they may simply be other winged homunculi with he same hox gene-manipulated bodyplan. The Assembly has confirmed black and white winged beings in Pakardia, Arvel's were silver winged while others were black, and those in Kairul were brown. This does roughly correspond with some of the cave paintings, but again some of these paintings were made in modern times, so it is unknown how reliable they are.
Red teratorn are very rare on the prairie, preferring forests and wetlands, but yes the three lineages correspond to those teratorns. The silver teratorn of western Arvel is possibly reflected in those harpies, and having better adaptations to a colder climate would certainly inspire harpies with that bodyplan to fly further south. It could also be that the red, gold, and black teratorn lineages adapted to mimic local birds, and weren't made that way specifically. Still a lot of unknown elements of homunculi adaptability, especially as harpies are clonal reproducers.
Sure did! Whispers from Beyond the Known World was the title when all I had done was the next part of the Hezuki story, but Kaishel is the only quiet region I'll be exploring, and cries fits the current tone a lot better.

@@TalesofKaimere It would cool to have a dedicated episosde on Teratorn birds as a whole. As the species so far we know on Kaimere being pretty apart from the ones of the fossils records and tend to be closer to the obsoletes depictions, thus being more stork-like than scavenging vulture-like animals.
I also wonder if typical Teraton as we know them today (how they were), like the Teratorn from the Pleistocene North America making it to Kaimere even despite the cull of the Last Natural Harvest at 12.000 kya ?
Teratorns, especially these ones, were Caracara-like animals in ecology and hunting behaviors, hunting actively near and at the ground small preys that they swallowed entirely directly right after catch and kill, and were pretty orpportunistic animals.
Not dedicated scavenger but still not refusing a carrion when one was available.
Per say, I can copletely see Teratornis itself or Oscaravis doing well in Kaimere, within the Known World, like in the Highland.
Having enough overlap with vultures and others birds of preys.

A story of great mothers
These harpies having to eat more than someone with the same size because of their musculature and such reminds me of the disney show Gargoyles where a scientist in that show explains that a gargoyle will need to eat up 22 or three cows a day to survive.
I wonder, could the First Children made centaurs?

The First Children could have theoretically made centaurs, but they weren't part of their mythology so had no inspiration to do so.

Ah, I see. Then again, you did say that some of your mermaids do have marine mammals in them. This is actually based on a mermaid-ish idea for a science fiction story, But I could imagine that 1 of your mermaid's lower body is that of a sea lion or something similar In a centaur fashion and could probably walk on the land, albeit awkwardly.

I've already incorporated alien elements into a few of the Class III homunculi (in the later years of their civilization the First Children collected not just from Kaimere but also from Earth and other planets), but there will be some actual species in Kaimere's ecosystem introduced down the road. None are particularly large or impactful on ecosystems, but they will be present all the same.
Some pretty cool shit!! Id love to hear more about these "beast folk" I wonder if they're more similar to the manimals from the island of Dr Morau or the beast people from Pellucidar.

I like the Oral history of the Harpies. The Hezuki sound interesting as well, although I haven’t gotten around to reading the anthology yet. I may skip out on the episode until I can get a copy of the book.
That's fair. I do have quite a few spoilers for the first story because the nature of hezuki in that story is a mystery until the end
harpies and ogres are by far my favourite creatures in mythology as most of the time they get overlooked and people usually focus more on giants and dragons/wyverns, glad that you made a video just for them.
Are their any other first children creations that are made.from their fantasys like the yeti or vampires?( the yeti might be created by using the base gene of homo altus and a mixture of gigantopithicus and the an garu, with some gene changes to make them white)
There are no confirmed Sasquatch/Yeti, but there are vampires and other undead I will cover at the end of the month!

I like how well you’re able to work a few of the old myths about harpies and sirens into these creatures/people. Would you suggest human stories of the figures in mythos come from homunculi brought to Earth at some point in the first children’s rule?

gildback and dire petrel seem obvious choices, as does a phoenix (be it khos, urvogel, or common), with a cockatrice being... plausible. the most likely would be white.
also the eagle parrots. thats probably the grey one.
going by colouration, id say there is a popinhawk harpy(popinharpy), a khos harpy, a yamakai/white cockatrice harpy, and a fourth one. possibly redwing buzzard or horned vulture

The Houze Prairie is probably the region of the world I'm most interested in (save for the Forest if Bones), so happy to see more of that. Question, assuming the tale of the first harpies was true, just how insanely old would that make the First Mothers? Surely some of the oldest creatures in Kaimere?

There are components of teratorn and eagle as their main influences. It is unknown what the other lineages resembled.
I am curious how hapies flight works, all flying vertebraes we know of have large, demographic flight muscles and I feel like an extra pair of limbs would easily interfere with that
That is at lest some distance between their wings and arms so that way better then most flying hexapods in fiction
It's best seen in Maru, but there's basically secondary pectorals over the rib cage. The arms are generally proportionally weaker to compensate. As for the younger ones like Yalena, they aren't as powerful fliers because their anatomy is more human.

1. Probably not well. They are not as good at flying as similar-sized birds or pterosaurs, and they need an absurd amount of food. Only doing as well as they are in the absence of volant predators or much competition in their habitat. Having substantial competition would make their caloric demands an enormous handicap. This is a general trend with homunculi and why they (and indeed kaimerans) have not had substantial success or significantly redefined the landscape outside of a few niche areas.
2. The fundamentals of parthenogenesis is actually pretty well documented in humans, just results in benign tumors. There are several documented cases of partial parthenogenesis in humans, usually in blood cells being cloned while other parts are comprised of conventionally fertilized tissues. These people are called parthenogenetic chimeras. From what I can tell (I'm not a geneticist so the articles I saved and studied from a few years ago may be dated), it isn't conclusively known but likely has something to do with H-19, DYAD, c-mos genes, or perhaps some combination of those. As for how it became standard in harpies and appears to only be partially incorporated in humans, might be something to do with the incorporation of elements from sauropsids, which have a much more robust history of parthenogenesis. A lot of harpy eggs aren't viable, so it could reasonably be inferred that it's a pretty unreliable process. Until the Assembly can fully study harpies, the exact details will remain a mystery.
3. In a group they can bring down buffalo, though generally don't target the biggest 2-ton bulls.
4. H. sapiens was present (and arguably still is in the form of kaimerans) until kaimerans got their hereditary magic around 7,000 years ago. Indigenous Americans were brought 10,000 years ago and integrated with the peoples who today are Kaimerans. Humans were also brought to Kaimere during the Mercantile Age around 3,000 years ago, and enslaved descendants of these peoples can still be found in the Free-States.

They look similar, but smaller and with red and gold wings respectively. Haven't had time to illustrate them but Maru is a good approximation.

In the 2021 "Magic of Kaimere" episodes, there was a glance of a giant worm creature, but it is a enchanted animal that mutated due to magic, so not a homunculi.
Nothing more was said about it.
I’m curious about Kaimeran magic. Is it possible for one to use magic to create and control undead? Not just Homunculi, but Witches, too? Imagine a Kaimeran necromancer!

Was a short yet enough informative episode that said everything to know about haries in general. Even if it's surprising that there no as many info to tell on them than the others homunculies like Giants/Ogres or Khalorim/Merfolk.
Outside that, I have some questions :
1 - Where this Grand Canyon/Arizona-like landcape of the title/thumbnail picture at the beginning of the video and throughout it, with a harpy watching a sunset take place ?
Somewhere in Ni'Khar ?
Near the area wich make connection/land bridge between Ni'Kar and Kairul ?
2 - The only Harpy working along permanently with the Assembly is the adolescent one we see at the Children of the Sky slide. Right ?

3 - See will appear in a coming novella ? Along Mar'Yalena or they path will remain paralle and will not cross ?
4 - Giving Harpies are primarily made of Teratorn birds, what are their relations toward them ?
They are sacred animals that they worship as primal ancestors ?
And many living alongside them in their colony, nesting and eating with them ?
5 - In the Khalorim/Merfolk episode, it was mentioned that there was one (single) kind/species of Khalorim which was made of bird instead of fish.
This must be this species that is caleld "Siren" as it would not made sense to called harpies as a whole by this term if these don't live near water or seas to match the Earth's Mythical original being.
6 - This Bird Khalorim species is believed to be one of the four remaining lost Harpies tribes ? Or is it another kind of bird-based homunculi ?
Because I can easily see the one that migrate to the South-East (light blue feathers) establishing and living alongside Khalorim and joining them, the one that migrate to South-West (dark brown feathers) establishing on (Highland of) Arvel and Pakardia, and the one that migrate to North-East (green feathers) to Kairul.
Have any idea where the one that migrate to North-West (dark grey feathers) could have gone... maybe the Permian Island ?
7 - Since Khalorim have a good, decent relation with Kaimeran as a whole, this type/kind of harpy must be the only one to have a somewhat permanently positive relation with most Kaimeran as such, unlike all the others tribes which have extremely limited, rare and not see under a good eyes relation with people as a whole. Right ?
1. These are the mesas on which the harpies live. It's in Ni'Khar, in the prairies north of the known world. As for the run time: we go with the budget we're given, and I've got books to write.
2. The harpy that worked with the Assembly isn't one I'm ready to publicly name at this time.
3. Time will tell ;)
4. They do regard teratorns highly. In some stories, their father was a teratorn and their mother a Dolani nomad.
5. They were made with Plotopterid components, and are indeed called sirens.
6. It is unknown if the winged beings encountered elsewhere are of the same sort, as they have not been closely encountered or introduced.
7. Khalorim have a good relationship with the Kentarim, but a poor one with kaimerans as a whole. The siren merfolk indeed have a good relationship with the Kentarim. The Assembly is not trusted.

3 - Only Kentarim ? I believed there were some decent relations between Khalorim and Kaimeran, since from the Khalorim episode it was imply that there were rules, reglementations and deal regarding the possibility Khalorim have to turn Kaimeran into one of them.

@@dudotolivier6363 1. Yes, they are over a thousand miles north of the Imperial border, which generally marks the northern boundary of the known world.
2. They may believe they share heritage, but there have been conflicts. When you only have a thousand or so harpies, losing a dozen to a skirmish with Dolani archers makes you very cautious.
3. There are indeed rules for turning Kaimerans, and most kaimerans turned are Kentarim. Just because a few Imperials, Pakardiant, and Qajarith have been turned doesn't mean relationships are good. In very broad strokes, a vast majority of Khalorim are wary of Kaimerans, especially after the witch hunts of the Qajarith ended with many slain Khalorim.

Unless it is the area in question, but it's the Imperial Empire which have a different, more limited, smaller view of the Known World and where it end...

There are no known blue harpies, but since most homunculi are extinct or in hiding it's entirely possible that there was at one point or they just haven't been found by the Assembly or disclosed by the Great Library

After watching the video a second time, Who is this Vaskardlock? (Or however it’s name is spelled), is it a powerful demon that took over the ruins after the first children collapsed? Sounds like an interesting fellow either way.
Indeed! It is said after the First Children collapsed, a demon arose from the masses and guided them into a consolidated nation in Qajar. Some say he was extremely powerful, others insist he was of humble origins, perhaps a worker or soldier drone. In most stories, he's a many-headed demon (as is seen on the wall of the homunculi episode 2 years ago).
How long did homo sapiens (from the African harvest) itself last in Kaimere?
Until around 8,000 years ago

Hey Keenan. I only recently got into your channel but i just finished catching up on all your videos. I've been interested in saving up for a sponsored creature, but I believe I've caught on that my favorite dinosaur (Stegosaurus) is extinct 😢 How would sponsoring an animal that no longer lives work? Keenan can answer best, but you can probably sponsor an episode about the history of stegosaurs in Kaimere, because they were definitely present and for a long time. When it's a completely extinct clade it won't add a ton to the setting in terms of things Keenan can use for the books, but I personally would like to learn about their history in Kaimere at some point too. I've seen a lot of people asking about stegosaurs over the last couple years of following Keenan's project so I think it's still a topic worth covering even just to bring some clarity about what exactly happened to them (and showcase some cool sketches of extinct Kaimeran stegosaurs ofcourse).
Thanks for reaching out! Stegosaurs are indeed extinct. As Andrey said, I can absolutely do a topic on an extinct species or clade! My first episode of the new year will be on the First Dynasty and is going to have a bunch of extinct tetrapod groups. The stegosaurs had some weird diversity on the mainland, and on the Jurassic Island, they were among the largest animals on the island during the Tyrant Dynasty. They are elves in all but name. Several Telmede Kaimerans are more dwarf inspired

Sort of. It follows her and aids her in her fight in the outpost. As a young male driven from his troop, he's bonded with her until he finds a troop to join.

I really liked the scene where Yalena had to hold Maru’s attention while an Uktan was curiously approaching her. It was very tense and well written. It showed that you have a lot of restraint and understanding of how to write a wild animal.

I have an idea for a creature That could fit into this world they’re called basilisks they are lizards that are as long as a lion and is as tall as a human toddler they have thin extended jaws and two sales on their backs like a dimetrodon but side to side like gela monsters they have hollow but strong teeth and have a venom that can paralyse a man stiff like a stone statue the venom is so potent that a single bite can fully paralyse an ogre in just half a minute and they have eyesight like that of a snake and can be found in plains deserts forests and jungles
There a great diversity of Madtsoiid snake on Kaimere, in size and niches. There is enough species to take to made a Basilisk asset for Kaimere.
