A friend is a gantry crane operator. Some can be remotely controlled from the ground but he prefers to be up high in the cab where ground staff can't bother him. It's a well paid and skilled job.

They own the air space up to the highest structure on their site and he quite clearly flew below the height of the crane structures, so he was in their air space and therefore trespassing.

To correct some minor details, the train was going West after 'leaving Southampton station' being in the direction of your flight. Plus, Eastleigh airport's flight path runs above that station, so about 3 miles away and is 4.5 miles from your position to the actual landing strip NNE (65 deg.)
