For anyone interested, here's a rough translation/summary of the conversation between the two players at 9:20 (I can't provide a line by line translation because the audio is a bit unclear, especially when Hong speaks): In the beginning, Yu says there was at least one instance during the game where Hong used one hand to move the pieces and another to punch the clock (which is illegal). He says that when Hong did so, Yu did not complain. Yu then says, "I'm not going to say anything now; we'll see what the arbiter says. I never touched the clock." I can't quite make out Hong's response, but afterwards Yu says, "I didn't do anything; I didn't even touch the clock," and later, "Go talk to the arbiter about this. This is an issue with the clock; what does it have to do with me?" That's when Hong walks away.
@@TheGrandmasterMan My guess is Yu was confident he could win without going through that whole process, considering he was much higher rated than his opponent (and, of course, it turned out that was exactly the case).
What happened at ~5:22 was probably what happened during the game as well. I have played with these clocks (I believe it's still the same version, at least the same brand) before, unfortunately it can bounce back when you press it lightly (more accurately, maybe staccato or leggieramente in musical terms). I had to press it back and actually eneded up gaining more time. I don't think there is a problem with this particular clock though.
These are standard tournament clocks. As a GM, Hong has used these on countless occasions. He screwed up his press and somehow tried to weasel out of the loss by blaming the clock. What a guy...
I don't think he was trying to "weasel out of the loss". Clock bouncing back after you pressed it simply should not happen. He was naturally upset about the problem. Unfortunately, replacing the clocks with better ones is not a feasible option. Overall it was just an unfortunate accident and I agree with the appeal commitee's decision.
@@tianledeng6179 Clock bouncing back happened because he pressed the middle instead of his end of the clock. User error. He's weaseling out of his own user error.
@@cw9282 Not true, have you watched what happened at ~5:22 (it is literally the opposite of what you described -- he pressed too far from the centre!)? Also have you used such DGT clocks before?
@@tianledeng6179 Not true that it was a user error? Funny how 3 arbiters looked at the clock and found no malfunction with it and ruled against Hong. Also funny how through so many tournaments where this clock is used, only Hong claimed such a clock malfunction.

Hong press the clock way to lightly on time trouble, which made the clock bounce back, (at one point on the video they even demonstrante this happening), and he lost on time. Hong was arguing that it was not his fault, and te arbiter were arguing that it was indeed his fault. I think it was Hong fault, it's unfortunate, but he lost, this is not a malfunction, just an unfortunate event, you need to fully press the button. Feels bad for Yu Yangyi, he was visibly frustrated, and he proceeded to perform poorly after this game.
My best guess is that happened the samething than in Carlsen x Holt. You can see it in the video "Why did Magnus Carlsen apologize to his opponent immediately after the game?" in this same channel.
That's Hong for yah... Yu had nothing to do with Hong pressing the clock. Hong just lost a lot of respect from the chess community which can see past his weaseling.
I agree. Sans video evidence, there is little else an arbiter can do. Liked Pragg's thinking; I wud look for witnesses in nearby boards - but yeah, most people see the game, n not clock. One other thing to consider is the DGT live game viewer, to see what happened. It usually records only movements of pieces on the board. And the "games broadcast" to see if the countdown timer shifted from one player to the other. The 360 camera idea - hmm - are we sure we can zoom into a particular "sector" of the video/freeze. This is critical. We are after all talking about noticing the clock from up above, let's say.
5:22 shows what must have happened. It's just that they can't agree on what that means. The player thinks he was cheated by the clock, the arbiter ("you just did it now") thinks it shows an error by the player.
If and only yu ywangi was strong enough to prove his point, this problem was a matter of minutes. I mean the opponent tried his best by pressing the officials into believing him which delayed the outcome. Anyways it was interesting.
Yu was being a gentlemen and gave his opponent time to argue his case. But Hong was being a bit of a brat by trying to draw Yu into it, and I could sense Yu's frustration given he has nothing to do with Hong messing up on pressing the clock.
Obviously there is a language barrier for Yu as the complaint is done in English so its hard to fault him for not pressing his case stronger if that's even the case.
They tested the clock and and it was completely fine.. If Hong pressed the clock and Yu didn't, then it just simply means that Hong didn't press it down properly. End of story. There was no need for that long delay lol.
when the 2 players talk they seem to be debating over if the clock was misfunctioning and Andrew proposed a rematch and Yu would like to defer to arbiter's decision on whether or not that's needed.
this is how these chinese guys fight where as dubo and nepo givng their half points which now might make them lose their potential 1st point and draw in a comedy shows the true bond and how russians really are united
I don't understand how this kind of drama can still happen even though there's like a bajillion cameras everywhere. Surely the simplest solution would be to always record a closeup of the clock and the chessboard to dispel any doubt about what ever happens during a match? It's just weird you have to ask eyewitnesses and deal with players testifying against each other...
Andrew seriously trying to blame the clock when he pressed it improperly? Lost all respect for the guy. If you screwed up, you own up to it and not blame an inanimate object to try to weasel out of a loss.
also this is the obvious difference between a +2700 super grandmaster , winner of many tournaments & someone who has been in the top level of chess for a decade comparing to an unknown & fresh GM.

They should go back to 3 second increments in the blitz. 2 seconds provokes unpleasant disputes about the clock and about sloppy piece placement. The players are actually good about it, and nobody complains when you get a sequence of bad piece placement, pressing the clock, adjusting the piece while the opponents time is running. But the crazy 2 second scramble really makes it undignified. Online it's more reasonable because you don't have these side effects, but otb it's just a bad idea.
There is a small plastic spring element in the clock. If you don't press down properly, the clock jumps back. It's sad that a player at this level is too stupid to operate the clock. It's annoying, but he lost. He'll never make that mistake again.
