A refreshingly candid admission that he is not a creative player and, in that same regard, an interesting comparison with Anand! Magnus has shown time and again that the key to chess success is a mastery of the endgame, but most strong players tend to get bogged down in opening preparations and devote less time to endgames.

There should be a new 'overall' world championship format. Simplify everything. Only rating spots. Average FIDE rating of blitz, rapid and classical over the last year, 8 highest rated players(excluding the current champion) play a candidates tournament. Number 1 takeaway I fully support: Is advancing the public interest in the game by changing the format and rules like has been done in tennis and other sports. Including adding shorter time limits. 1 minute bullet is a little fast for most audiences to follow but 3’ - 30’ is a range that most of us can follow live. Furthermore most of us play 30’ - 3’ games which they can identify with. Longer games do result in more quality moves, deeper calculations. For fans a game that provides each player more than an hour is not going to capture a following of large numbers of potential fans. This doesn’t require any changes in the basic rules. Stalemates and ties are a barrier to building a fan base but I don’t know how that would be addressed.
03:57 That's really a cool idea! Three Crowns: Classic (Fischer Random), Rapid & Blitz (Standard Chess). Hey! Fantasy Chess, I assume, would be based off the fantasy football model as previously mentioned. In fantasy football, you choose a starting lineup of 11 players out of any players in the relevant league/competition and gain points for each out of the 11 players depending on how they perform (5 points for goals, 3 for assists, etc.) adding up to a total point tally to compare to other players. In chess, you would probably choose 4/5 players in a competition (or in a tour?) and gain points for wins, draws against significantly higher rated opponents as well as %accuracy.

i swear this man reeks of intelligence😂every response always perfectly logical and reasonable. also really glad he didn't try to estimate the prevalence of cheating...
Very interesting. When you have achieved the highest recognition and financial wealth in any field, what keeps you going is having fun with it. Magnus is a very mature competitor, also one of the most dominant player in anyfield ever. There is something to learn there
The difference between world championship and other strong tournament is not the time control, but the 1-on-1 nature plus long preparation time before the world championship. Magnus probably feel that opponents were so well prepared for world championship , make the games mostly just draws. (not really true for last WC though)
Magnus is right, changed format shall help players to beat super computers in future,it's challenge, FIDE should change its format or atleast try new once what he says ,dear FIDE ❤❤
Ahhh I'm so excited to see 960 classical I didn't know it was happening. No idea why 960 has been mostly rapid control. It requires way more calculation than regular chess.
ive had two messages about people cheating and my points being refunded. its basically making the game less fun if people just cheat. because the best part of chess is exploring someone's mind. yet when people have weak minds that cant play, they end up cheating to make up for their mind not being great.
I completely agree with the popularization of Fischer random under classical time control. It would make for very dynamic games, and could also work especially well for a broadcast if there are a couple concurrent games to follow. I don't completely agree with entirely phasing out classical chess from elite games, but rather the classical games played should quickly descend into lower time controls after each game.
Sometimes he's cocky, but he has admitted before that he's not the GOAT yet. He has said he's not real impressed with Fischer, but he believes Kasparov is the GOAT and the MJ of chess. He mentioned it on Lex Fridmans podcast a year ago when they asked him who the GOAT was. He could have easily been dishonest and cocky and called himself the GOAT. He did say he needs more longevity to do it, and that he's trying to. Definitely not a cocky answer to that question. I know at other times he has been cocky. Basically said he has no current rivals, and that if you go below that then Hikaru is next, lol. I thought it was funny though.
3:39 Imagine all the hard-working chess players like Ding Liren, and Magnus explains how he breaks record: "I was not preparing much...I just wanted to have fun..."
I'm not a tournament player. just a life time hacker who loves the game. But one thing I've picked up on is how many of the top great players have all had issues with Fide. my only regret is as an Octogenarian I I don't have time to engross in tournaments etc. things that I wanted to do but life and family responsibilities came first. Que sera sera. I can still enjoy it herein cyber space. Thanks for sharing. ECF
Fischer said that long ago like in 2006? Chess 960 was his idea. he was saying that even back then when he was active? The guy was super smart, that is why he is the real GOAT not Magnus.
I agree on Fischer chess being slower and classical chess being rapid or blitz. Nobody would watch a 5 hours game in a championship match. But if you know it's rapid or blitz, then it gets exciting. I think he's right, the future of chess has to be that way...
I think WC should be decided by point accumulation of mixed format: Classical (1hr+40 move time control) for 40% of points, rapid: 20%, Blitz: 20, ches960: 20%. Where they play the shorter format last. For most ppl a 5hr game is too long to be watchable, you just watch hikaru or agad recap the game, but then there is no surprise element.
Regarding fisher random (or chess 960) I really hope that u wont need to study openings for all 960 different starting positions in order to gain an advantage right from the start. I would probably stop playing then😅
It is funny how all the other players seriously prepare to play against Magnus and lose while he doesn’t even care about preparation. It shows how much ahead he actually is from his competitors. I have never seen a player in any sports(in door or out door) who got bored because it was to easy for him. Magnus is truely one of a kind.
The world chess championship is bigger than one man, they shouldn't change under any circumstances for any player. Carlsen's proved he's top 3 ever and made his money, he's more interested in blitz and women.
Were they talking about “Fantasy Chess” or “Fancy Chess”? It sure sounded like Fancy Chess to me and truth be told, that would be so much better…like all the players are dressed up as characters from a Napoleonic play and are using extravagant implements to move their pieces (like they did on war maps back in the day)…it would be super fancy! lol.
The current chess god basically agrees with what Fischer said. Which is why Fischer is imo, the greatest player. There are two major sports events in history, one is when Fischer went to Russia and destroyed the Russians during war time, when no one else could. And when us Minnesotans basically put the best hockey team ever created and destroyed the Russians, when no one else could. Computers made the average chess player better. So, the average NM IM GM numbers increased. Elos are not far and away higher than before. Just more people play because computers are a fast access to information. It does not mean we can compute as quickly or efficiently as they can.
Fischer Random: why not let the players place the five pieces NBQBN followed by KRK? Then randomness would be removed. Also, if any start position is unfair, it would thus be eliminated.
I think the digital space is where chess is going to get it's most growth. You can play chess at whatever level you please 24/7, a community is there 24/7, and they are open to widening the game into fun and casual endeavors like goofy bots and duck games. Chess is an elite game and it is handled like it, but there is merit in having aspects of it be intentionally casual and friendly to get people in the door. The ones with passion for the game will naturally stay, the ones without it tried something new even if it wasn't their cup of tea. The horizon is endless and we are already in chess 2 era without realizing it. The game is already much more than classical without pushing classical out. Format diversity is the real winning move.
A great answer for the future of chess. Fisher random with classical time controls for the world champion ship. Classic chess relegated to fast time controls.
I think the way to 100% prevent cheating in chess for "over the board" is to play without any streming, electronics devices or spectators around during the games. Just film it and show it after. During the time it shown, people could analysing the game commenting it and all. Maybe don't tell any results before it's completely shown.
Yes that's why players get searched for electronic devices. It's still not guaranteed that none would be smuggled e.g.. into a toilet somewhere. And cutting the spectators off completely is not easy - like in every sport, watching games live is a valuable part of experience, banning that alienates the fans

Excellent Interview!
i swear this man reeks of intelligence😂every response always perfectly logical and reasonable. also really glad he didn't try to estimate the prevalence of cheating...
Oozes intelligence would be a better fit here as reeks has a negative connotation 👍
He answers very comedically and doesn't dive into areas that are more unfamiliar to him
Probably was given the questions in advance to make sure nothing inappropriate asked and also opportunity to think about the answers
Very interesting. When you have achieved the highest recognition and financial wealth in any field, what keeps you going is having fun with it. Magnus is a very mature competitor, also one of the most dominant player in anyfield ever. There is something to learn there
Fischer Random is fantastic
Such a smart and real guy, answering questions with honesty! Goat does what goat wants, respect!
The difference between world championship and other strong tournament is not the time control, but the 1-on-1 nature plus long preparation time before the world championship. Magnus probably feel that opponents were so well prepared for world championship , make the games mostly just draws. (not really true for last WC though)
"I don't believe in psychology" - The famously sane Bobby Fischer
You just cannot hate this man, great interview
Magnus is right, changed format shall help players to beat super computers in future,it's challenge, FIDE should change its format or atleast try new once what he says ,dear FIDE ❤❤
We want to see Magnus back at the world championship!!!
Ahhh I'm so excited to see 960 classical I didn't know it was happening. No idea why 960 has been mostly rapid control. It requires way more calculation than regular chess.
A masterclass interview from Magnus Carlsen
What is the Chess 960 tournament in classical time control? I have been looking forward to something like this happening!
ive had two messages about people cheating and my points being refunded.
its basically making the game less fun if people just cheat.
because the best part of chess is exploring someone's mind.
yet when people have weak minds that cant play, they end up cheating to make up for their mind not being great.
Levy never fai....wait....
lmao
Stepped down so others could have a chance is the true truth
Great insights from Magnus about various aspects of his chess journey. Respect for his honesty and perspectives on different chess-related topics.
I completely agree with the popularization of Fischer random under classical time control. It would make for very dynamic games, and could also work especially well for a broadcast if there are a couple concurrent games to follow. I don't completely agree with entirely phasing out classical chess from elite games, but rather the classical games played should quickly descend into lower time controls after each game.
so humble and cocky at the same time, got to love him.
Magnus comes across as casual and humble until he makes a comment like this: 1:30 - 1:43.
Great interview!
ECF
960 is the future. No preps, no memóry boring stuff
Fischer said that long ago like in 2006? Chess 960 was his idea. he was saying that even back then when he was active? The guy was super smart, that is why he is the real GOAT not Magnus.
@@lashaxoperia5917 🤨
I agree on Fischer chess being slower and classical chess being rapid or blitz. Nobody would watch a 5 hours game in a championship match. But if you know it's rapid or blitz, then it gets exciting. I think he's right, the future of chess has to be that way...
After a long time with nice haircut, bro looking damn good.
9:25 Kasparov cheated Judith Polgar and got away with it. Touch move, remember?
What is the name of the game?
They both pronounce fantasy like fancy and I’m here for it. Bring on fancy chess!
That's what I thought too! I was wondering what the hell is fancy chess?? 😂
@JonaasK 'Xactly! 😂 I'd rather see fancy chess than fantasy chess.
Regarding fisher random (or chess 960) I really hope that u wont need to study openings for all 960 different starting positions in order to gain an advantage right from the start. I would probably stop playing then😅
you already know some sweaty autistic indian is gonna do it
are you farting serious? there will ofc be theory on strategies but not the usual deep prep. its ridicukous..
@@paulgoogol2652 Fair enough, good point!
Bro, magnus remember this is the world chess champion, the best in the world, how can you say that's not important
The fantasy chess isn't starting yet right?
I think I heard Fancy Chess.. (?)
12:25 was amazing
In my opinion a lifetime ban from any competetive chess is the right answer you never cheat by accident.
Agree
Regardless of the context?
Well give an example but any examples i can think of i would say yes.@@mark5071
At Carlsen's level there is only a small group of players who can realistically beat him. He truly is the GOAT.
This interview has made for us to believe that he's also "just" a human!
Yet the last moments of nepo vs ding in the fide world championship was the best chess drama I've ever seen.
"What do you think of FIDE?"
I mean that really says it all doesn't it?
So lucky to be alive at the same time as him!
He pronounced Wijk aan zee correctly, I respect that :D
LET'S GO! Fischer Random Classical
The world chess championship is bigger than one man, they shouldn't change under any circumstances for any player. Carlsen's proved he's top 3 ever and made his money, he's more interested in blitz and women.
Just waiting on the villain arc of this Carlos Manchego
Were they talking about “Fantasy Chess” or “Fancy Chess”? It sure sounded like Fancy Chess to me and truth be told, that would be so much better…like all the players are dressed up as characters from a Napoleonic play and are using extravagant implements to move their pieces (like they did on war maps back in the day)…it would be super fancy! lol.
they would wear powdered wigs and vivaldi spring would play
It is good that he talks about the possibilities of cheating. It won't go away and it is getting easier with technology.
