Bought this LP as a teenager when it first came out. Love it. I remember my mum coming into my room when I was playing it and surprising me by singing the words to the big dies irae tune.

I bought this when it came out on vinyl but I could not love it, I kept going back to Beecham and later Charles Munch & Orchestre de Paris, 1968 on EMI. These are my favourites. Munch surprised me because I knew his two RCA recordings, 1955 & 1962 of which neither amazed me. His last is amazing and released the year he died. Michael Tilson-Thomas has a very good version with the SFSO. Also.
This is my first time hearing this and I never realized that the opening theme to “The Shining” came from _this_ classical piece. Berlioz really created a dark, terrifying but poetic masterpiece.
@@GreenBoy9000 Not in this version. Colin Davis recorded 3 version of Symphonie Fantastique -- LSO, Concertgebouw, Vienna -- only the Vienna version (1992) uses the cornet. Cornet version: ruclips.net/video/HtYe_iWeFus/видео.html
I am very very sorry and no offense to Colin Davis fans (I myself have liked Davis elsewhere as a conductor such as Mozart repertoire) but this version of the Symphonie Fantastique is so painfully slow and boring. This puts me to sleep. It's a narcotic sleep inducer maybe the idea was that the artist who poisons himself is having a long lengthy dream and we're experiencing it in slow motion but I don't think that works for this symphony particularly in such portions as the ball the march to the scaffold and the sabbath it might work for only the Country Side scene but that's it. If the idea is that he is slowly dying of unrequited love this is the slowest death ever. II prefer the livelier powerful more electrifying versions of Bernstein and Solti and the most absolutely perfect is the Charles Munch. This one is just unlistenable way too slow.
Sorry for my poor English! Well, I heard a lot years ago colin Davis in Buenos Aires. Mmmm! Yes, I accord with you. Try this simphony with Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Orchestra (1997-1998) Magnificent! (version and sound DDD) That is in You Tube but in several parts and different covers.. Dispite of this the symphony is complete! (look for “berlioz fantastique tilson”) The best for my taste. Regards from Buenos Aires.
"A narcotic sleep inducer"...??? well is your appraisal of the performance...I disagree with you totally. To me is one of the best readings of the work and the only one who respect the score with all details as ritornellos( March of Scafold for instance) and the trumpet line( as a marvellous counterpoint to the melody) in "The Ball" which is so important to hear.Colin Davis was a Berlioz Expert.Anyway Munch; Dutoit, Ozawa and many others conductros are truly fantastic with his music.
This is a subjective topic, so your impression of this recording isn't objectively wrong. However, for the sake of everyone who happens to read this comment of Rachel's, I assure you, you will not have this interpretation of this recording! Listen to the whole thing and decide for yourself. I, along with many others, respect this as one of the greatest Berlioz recordings ever.
Finest ever recording of this extraordinary masterpiece. Davis and the Concertgebouw produced some magnificent recordings
YES!!! I finally found what I was looking for! THIS is the version of the Berlioz symphony I want!

Much prefer Kempe with Berliner Ph. than Tilson and also Maris Jansens.
@@sempersodalis6093 thanks for that, I have not heard either, I was a great admirer of Kempe. I shall look up both. Cheers from Oz.

The Dies Irae dates back much further.
@@auerstadt06 Yeah it actually is Latin for Day of Wrath and is sung amongst medieval monks.

@@papagen00 Huh. Well, that's something.
Scene aux Champs was the obvious precursor to the prelude to act 3 of Tristan.
Berlioz was about the confluence of classicism and romanticism. This is why Colin Davis was so effective in Berlioz.
♥♥♥ !!
Reference recording.
Try Beecham before you say “Reference”.
