1991, I was a ten-year old boy, just getting into comic books, and we had great movies that year: Terminator 2, Hook, The Rocketeer. It was a great year!
My favorite moment of the 1991 chapter of Batman history has to be Chuck Dixon’s shadow box storyline. I love the subtle yet very profound bits of characterization for Batman Dixon wrote in along with the gritty tone of the story.
I love Tim! I got this issue when it came out and read it so many times. I also read the Hungry Grass and Spirit of the Beast. I also have that Superman Armageddon 2001 annual.
Hi Salazar, epic video didn't realise ALL this content came out in just one year, a personal favorite of mine is IDENTITY CRISIS, Peter Miligan's writing approach was a fresh and exciting departure from all the cross-overs and wider Batman characterisations which was being built up during this time. Harking back to some of the more supernatural elements which 1970s DC Comics were choc full of. This issue also boasts some of Tom Mandrake's best ever art on Batman, shadowy and atmospheric as the Dark Knight should be. Keep up the great work!
Beautiful work on this 91 retrospective. I have many of these issues but haven't read them in years. Greatly enjoy these videos you do. Keep up the great work!!
Yet another wonderful video Sal, What a good way to celebrate Batman Day 2k22. And incidentally a week before my 20th birthday! 😅 1991 was certainly a big rise for the Bat, the next year is going to be even bigger! 🦇🐈⬛🐧 To be honest, I always found Peter Milagins run to be a very unique approach. Seeing Batman got his start as this weird pulpi hero of the 30s. I can't wait to see what's in store this October 🎃
Fantastic video, I'm going to watch every single one until the end of history! Little heads up: "late great tim sale" or "late great goerge perez" would mean that the work you're talking about was done late in their career, but they both died in 2022 - 31 years later. But that's just a minor thing I noticed, all the research you put into these videos is amazing and I'm loving every minute of it! Edit: I was wrong myself and you did everything right here, whoops
Regardless of Ace and Harold being editorial mandate and not being the writers descision, that's no reason not to like them. I feel they were great edtions in fact.
I have a bunch of your videos to catch up on! Always a pleasure to watch. Hope you’re well. Also, I love that one Breyfogle splash page from that Destroyer issue! 35:07
As much as I love Kelley Jones, this variant cover here 21:31 is extremley inapropriate for the Robin 2 mini-series esspecially for the first issue, considering Batman is bareley in the story.
If I can interject: okay plotwise even if The Idiot Root and Batman Holy Terror were not particular Batman stories to write home about, for any aspiring artists, it's a good study, and quite frankly aside from Neal Adams, Marshal Rogers, even Greg Capullo, there's no better artists to study than Norm Breyfogle and Jim Aparo
I know most Batman fans are Aparo fans but as SK says Grant-Breyfogle were crushing Wolfman-Aparo because of the stories but also because Norm's art was superior looking at it back to back with Aparo's
hey man i love your videos, but you have been recently creating videos over things that you already have made i mean like you are going to do batman contagion, legacy, cataclysm and no man’s land right?
There's something I've always wondered about Detective Comics 627: Batman's 500th appearance in the title was 526, which makes sense, as 527 would've been his 501st appearance. So... did he skip an issue before the 600 milestone? Otherwise, shouldn't Batman's 600th Detective appearance be, y'know, 626?
I think your channel is excellent, never miss an episode, BUT I can't agree with you about Norm Breyfogle. Most of his art looks rushed to me, it has no style and seems more like layout or first draft rough pages, they could be by almost anyone (and they need to be finished).
That's more difficult. Keeping in mind my preference is for more "classic" art in comics, I appreciate the super clean line work and (admittedly cookie-cutter) proportions of Rogers and Austin in Detective (best Hugo Strange IMO). For a moody Batman I actually like the rough, noir style of the original 30's and 40's stories. It draws you in and makes you feel like you're a spectator to actual events (that super-evil criminal -not cartoon- Joker and femme fatales Catwoman). I even like (and favor) Aparo in Brave and Bold. The team-ups with other hero characters read like basic "comic book" stories and his art fits perfectly.
I did not care for Blood Rain. It worked, but was visually unappealing, though Arkham Assylum was worse. By contrast I loved Holy Terror and read it multiple times, and would cheerfully do so again. This would probably be even more of a shock as I am very conservative religiously. However, I have been noted to have an inate contrarian streak which will often put me at odds with the conventional wisdom, whether I would or not. Lastly, I think that Robin II: Joker's Wild is my favorite comic, if for no other reason than it serves as a beautiful callback to Death in the Family and payoff for A Lonely Place of Dying. If nothing else, it shows thar Tim Drake is more than able to fill the role left by Dick and Jason.
This video has kind of put me off of buying Dark Knight Detective volume 7 next year, which will collect adventures from Batman #474, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #27, Detective Comics #634-638, Detective Comics #641, Detective Comics #643, and Detective Comics Annual #4. The stories just sound horrible and I really don't like Louise Simonson as a writer at all and find her to be mediocre at her best.
I'm not a fan of Judge Dredd largley due to his facist nature. It's not hard to see that Batman and Judge Dredd hate each other in the Batman/Judge Dredd comics, though I think Judge Dredd would get along really well with Millerverse Batman, given their similar attitudes.
40 minutes of Salazar knight :O, have to watch this with some cake
I absolutley love the format you chose to have the modern bat series!
1991, I was a ten-year old boy, just getting into comic books, and we had great movies that year: Terminator 2, Hook, The Rocketeer. It was a great year!
GREAT VIDEO! I was also born in 1991and would like to get something Neal Adams looking tattooed on me lol
My favorite moment of the 1991 chapter of Batman history has to be Chuck Dixon’s shadow box storyline. I love the subtle yet very profound bits of characterization for Batman Dixon wrote in along with the gritty tone of the story.
Just want to say how much I appreciate how thoughtful and comprehensive these videos are! It’s heaven for Batman fans! Thanks for all you do.
5:27 The Golem looks a little bit like Clayface. Also there was a robot named "The Golem" in Batman Beyond but it had nothing to do with this story.
10:52 -11:46 Not only that but it also seems to inspire the Injustice continuity of Superman!!!
I love Tim! I got this issue when it came out and read it so many times. I also read the Hungry Grass and Spirit of the Beast. I also have that Superman Armageddon 2001 annual.

Will do! Believe it or not, next year is even bigger in terms of content!!
90s Batman was my thing!!! I was like 12yrs old and loveddd when they introduced Tim Drake!
This series is a godsend bro love it
I love your videos!
Beautiful work on this 91 retrospective. I have many of these issues but haven't read them in years. Greatly enjoy these videos you do. Keep up the great work!!
Good channel here for learning the history of the Batman comic books.
Love the video as always! Happy batman day Sal!
I really enjoy watching your work Salazar Knight. Keep it up.
Just watching this video just reminding me once again how great Alan Grant and Norman Breyfogle were
In the original Killer Croc story from 1983 I felt bad for him there too, after learning his backstory.
A delightful video dude. Wasn't expecting one today, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Happy batman day too Salazar

No, sorry, using the word "late" in that manner simply means that person has passed away. Nothing more.
@@davidgraham8299 Oh wow, really? Then I've just been doing it wrong all my life. Nevermind that part of my comment then. Thanks for telling me, haha.
Me encanta este canal. Como me encataria encontrar alguno igual de Superman y flash
These videos are great!!!
great job as always, cheers!
Great work! Thank you very much for continuing to make these. :-)
You are masterful 🎉
is anyone gonna talk Abt how the story where superman tried to destroy all nukes is bassicly just the plot of injustice
Regardless of Ace and Harold being editorial mandate and not being the writers descision, that's no reason not to like them. I feel they were great edtions in fact.
love your videos man I always watch them to inspire when im customizing my figures by any chance do u know of any superman chanel or dc like yours?
Thank you! I wish there was a Superman channel, but I haven't seen one. Hopefully someone starts one soon!
16:37 I'm not the only one who thinks Dracula in his Bat form in red rain looks a lot like Man Bat, am I?
The Grim Reapers cicle reminds me a lot of the riddlers cain on the batman 2004.
Can’t wait for the next one!:)
Another brilliant video about a great year for Batman! I wanted to ask: has the anniversary issue of 627 been printed as part of a collection?
Yes! It came out last year in volume 6 of the tpb called "Batman: The Dark Knight Detective"!
@@SalazarKnight - Many thanks for your help! I hope I haven't taken up much of your time. Keep up the good work.
I have a bunch of your videos to catch up on! Always a pleasure to watch. Hope you’re well.

Honestly the Idiot Root is what introduced me to Norm Breyfogle following Shadow of The Bat
The main event. Popcorn ready

Well, I actually loved Wolfman's take on The Case of The Chemical Syndicate more than Alan Grant's. Nevertheless, Wolfman was unsuitable for Batman.
It was a heart attack, NOT a stroke
Two old ladies ? And I thought the two kids from the Batman: TAS episode: I've Got Batman In My Basement were The Dark Knight's worst offenders.
I like that episode LOL

Have you read batman vs robin by mark waid and mahmud asrar
Wait a minute: the armageddon Superman annual shares beat for beat with Injustice
True!
@@SalazarKnight is it possible this comic inspired the game?
Maybe. Or maybe there are so many Superman stories that some start to repeat themselves unintentionally!!
@@SalazarKnight still. Fun little coincidence. Anyway big fan of your channel. Though I miss lifeclock in your videos

I'm not gonna lie, those were not good days for Detective Comics.
maybe Louise wasn't good for Batman but she wrote great stories for New Mutants and X-factor

Sorry but most of the artwork in the nineties was terrible.
