After watching your video on the Penn 320 gti, I ended up buying two nice ones on the auction site and with your help, took them all apart and cleaned and lubed them. I ended up really liking them so decided to look for a Penn 25 gls in nice condition. It came yesterday and I decided to take it all apart and clean it too. When I got it all put back together, it didn`t work right so I let it set overnight while I thought about what might have gone wrong. Then it occurred to me, I had put the spool washers in the wrong configuration. After returning them to their original ()()I position it works beautifully. Without you I`d still be struggling trying to figure that thing out. Thanks for all that you go through to make these instructional videos. Sure I could have bought a new Daiwa seagate or saltist, but whats the enjoyment in that? Made in the USA!
Glad that it helped and thanks for the feedback David. Those reels were built to last and I am sure they will treat you fine as long as you keep them serviced. You are off to a good start. Please stay well and stay watching - Dennis
I seem to collect the penn 25 and the gls45 it my go to reel for fluke, black, stipers.i thing it one of the best reel made by penn.they are and few to come by.but when I do come across them I buy them.and they do xast nice. Just my input.fish on
Again, another great instructional video. One thing I noticed, at the end of your video you adjusted the drag while the lever was in the strike position. You can do that with Penn Lever Drag reels? Most of my lever drag reels are Avet and I was instructed to always adjust the drag while the lever is in the free spool position. Again, your videos are a great help.
@@2ndChanceTackle Well, I got my Penn GLS 45 back together all lubed and cleaned but I got a problem. At the strike position, I got something like 1 lb. of drag and at full drag, I got only 5 pounds of drag. Not good. Back to the drawing board and go through this step by step.
Hi Dennis, Just finish re-lube my first GLS 45. I noticed that the level drag setting changed to a lower drag setting everytime I moved the level ( From free spool to full drag and anything in between ). Is that normal or I put something together wrong ?
Hmmm - hard to say. I would take the lever assembly off and make sure all is clean and that the point line up on the re-install. I doubt anything inside the reel is causing this at first guess. Dennis
Do you have any extra parts for sale ? I’m looking for the plastic drag cover with the 3 tabs . One tab broke on mine . And will not stay on anymore . I have the gls25 Thanks
I am not a parts reseller. I use Mysticparts.com for Penn Parts. They should have this piece. Here is a link to the ordering page for your reel www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Penn45GLS.aspx Dennis
I almost always oiled bearings. I do not have a bearing packer. Can you recommend one? I've only done it by hand, when I do repack them - Thanks - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I do it by hand also..because I have not found one that works very well..Alan Tani sells one, which my friend has,,and he says he has not had good results with it. So until I find one,it will be done by hand.. I thought maybe you had one.
@@2ndChanceTackle I couldn`t recall, just remembered,,a friend of mine had a bearing packer called "The Greaser" I think they make a 2nd generation version,I think some of the hobby shops carried them,,probably useful for smaller bearings, may not work well with large,,but the one he had did work well,,he serviced 99.9% freshwater baitcasters, and smaller spinning reels.
Thanks Bill - I'll do some research and see if I can find more. I suspect these tools only work on the open bearings and not the shielded ones where we need to remove the "C" ring and washers. Looking to learn some more about them - Dennis
Great timing, I hope the GLS 40 is similar. I have 2 that I am about to service.
Basically the same reel. Just take your time and be patient. Best wishes - Dennis

That's a great reel. Beached a 103lb Ulua on Kure Atoll in 2002 with that reel.
These are certainly capable of that class fish!.Thanks for viewing. Please stay tuned for more to come - Dennis

If I did that, it was a mistake. I usually note int he video that the drag should only be set in free spool. MY BAD! Dennis

That's a shame!
Hi dennis is this reel similar to 245ld? Couse i have one and i need to change the drag washer
Yes - they are basically the same. I believe the 245 replaced the GLS in 1999 and rand for about 5 years before it was discontinued - Dennis
