Nice picks. Some I know by name, but remember only Bow Wow Wow... Maybe I should gave hardcore treatment for this thread, 'cause we have very strong scene with female punks.
"I ended up with nine for some bizarre reason"...I remember having to read Dylan Thomas poems in an English class in high school. I don't think I liked it. "Yeah, I was captivated by her singing and the look she has"...I have that Screaming Bamboo EP. When I was in high school, and later at Carleton U, I used to go up to Ottawa once in a while to a store called Shake Records (now gone), and the band was there one time. They got played on Carleton U's station CKCU and that's where I first heard it. Cool you have that record. Now there are 2 of us in the vinyl community with that record, when I thought it was just me. I have that Martha & The Muffins album you showed. I have an excellent hits collection from Rough Trade on compact disc. "My dad heard part of High School Confidential one day and was kind of surprised by the lyrical content" 😂😂😂
There were far more quotable moments than I thought in this one! I never had to read any Dylan Thomas, but there are a handful of poems that I like from him. I should have known that you, with that Ottawa connection, might have had the Screaming Bamboo record 🙂 I think my dad quietly liked the Rough Trade track 😉 It's just a guess, though.
Rough Trade's "High School Confidential" and "All Touch" got a lot of radio airplay here in Vancouver in 1981 and '82. I saw Carole Pope perform at the Vancouver Folk Fest about 5 years ago, and she's still fabulous.
This is a fantastic thread. I really enjoy Ed’s channel. Esperanza Spalding is fantastic. I was also familiar with Rough Trade and Martha and the Muffins, that’s about it! An eclectic mix as always. I’m going to jump on this thread. Hope you’re having a great weekend, Brian.
Screaming Bamboo! They're my favorite band out of Ontario! 🤣🤣🤣 Actually I have not heard of them, but dig the name of the band. I didn't know bamboo could scream! Interesting picks and good idea for a thread. I think I might be subbed to onmyturntable, but will check out his channel to make sure and possibly partake. Hope you're having a good week!
It turns out that MGK knows Screaming Bamboo. I guess the Ottawa connection made sure of that. I am sure you can come up with a few female blues musicians!
I’m late to this. I started Young Marble Giants so I can listen to it first thing tomorrow. You really hyped it up…. Wow - lit reference. I saw the lead singer of Bow Wow Wow a few years ago at an 80s revival. Hey, I actually know one you mentioned - Feist. I love the Metals album.
Some interesting choices, Brian. I probably won't attempt this thread because I have not recovered enough of my old vinyl collection to make a decent showing. But these would definitely be on my list: L7, Mazzy Star, Patti Smith, Nico, Sinead O'Connor, Heart, Bikini Kill, Cat Power, Björk, and Linda Ronstadt. I saw Emmylou Harris in concert when I lived in California. She performed at a 3 day concert known as Bread and Roses, benefiting incarcerated individuals. Sadly, I never met her at a friend of a friend's party, though. I'm going to have to look up some Screaming Bamboo videos. I already subscribe to Ed. Great channel!
Hello Mark - That is a fabulous list of female artists. Too bad you never got to meet Emmylou Harris. But, some people do say, "don't meet your heroes." Ha ha 🙂
Some fine choices Brian. I’m going to do this thread soon. As a historical note, I saw Rough Trade before the release of their direct to disc release in the basement of the Colonial Tavern on Yonge St. The bar is long gone, it was across the street from what became the Eaton Centre. I’m sure it’s been replaced by some monstrosity. Anyways, the Colonial saw some great artists perform there, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Smith etc. Kevin and Carol were relegated downstairs where nobodies got to play. On a good night maybe 35 people would be in the audience, but they were fucking sensational. Kevin is a very underrated guitarist, and Carol is a great vocalist. Always felt that they were held back by the very thing that they pioneered, their frank sexual imagery and lyrics. I have a Bow Wow album that I picked up in Europe with that controversial cover. I’m going to give Feist another chance. Cheers.
Hi Jack - I am looking forward to your response. I never got to the Colonial Tavern, so I assume it was gone before I moved to Toronto. Sounds like it was a very interesting place! I think Feist has a really great voice 🙂
Interesting thread. I got a single of "I Want Candy." Gonna have to look into Rough Trade, never heard of 'em. Thought that was a big record store in NYC! I just did a video on the 2024 Grammy-nodded albums in my collection and it was somewhat female-heavy, but I might do a separate video on this thread.
Poor Adam Ant lost his rythmn section to Bow Wow Wow, amazing how his first album is so similar to that album. I never had a lot of female singers until the last 10 years. Now I keep finding a lot of new female artist who really make a lot of music that really appeal to me. Some interesting albums that I have never seen Brian
Bow Wow Wow were thieves! My collection is heavily dominated by men, and I have never been certain why that is. It's a good question. Maybe there are fewer female musicians. . .
Hi Richard - Starless and Bible Black is such a great title. I wish I could recall when i learned that. It probably came from being lost in the Wikipedia!
Brian...after a long work day, and a much needed vodka martini with a friend at happy hour, I am settling in at home and saw your video. Thank you! I knew you'd bring to the table some left of center artists: need to up my game for a Part 2! I appreciate you giving me a shout out, and some other VC members have subbed as a result. Thanks again! 😎🎶🎤
Hi Brian! Evans the death is one band I have never heard of and will give them a look. I watched Mike’s Friday cheers and he proved you wrong on screaming bamboo. They sound really good. I will also check out the other artists you showed as well. I subscribed to Ed.
Bow Wow Wow I like. The alternative to Adam & the Ants? I have that album where she sits naked alone, painted with gold pain, which isn’t that evident. I remember paying quite a bit for it used way back when they were almost giving vinyl away (I want candy). I did not know it is actually a compilation.
Wonderful response. I remember back to the days before the internet and I was buying highly regarded albums from the Rolling Stone Record Guide and the Trouser Press Guide and I came close to buying The Young Marble Giants and you have reminded me of that now a couple of times. Esperanza Spalding sounds like someone that I would like. Screaming Bamboo is one of my favorite bands ... never mind, it's The Screaming Tribesmen I was thinking of. I do have that Rough Trade album. This time I'm not kidding. I do have a Feist record as well.
I'm still rambling on about The Young Marble Giants. I've never used the Rolling Stone Record Guide or the Trouser Press Guide. Maybe I would have a better collection if I had done so! 🙂
Ok...don't panic...I do have an Esben and the Witch album, but it isn't that one. 😆Too much crossover makes me fear a coming apocalypse. Just subbed to Ed's channel, hopefully I'll get something together for the thread. Cheers Brian!
Hey Brian! Recognized some of the artists your gave your spotlight too but haven't really given them a chance. Will be sure to do so now! Cheers man!!!
I’m also a big fan of Young Marble Giants Brian. Still quite a strong cult following here. BWW great stuff, with Adam’s pinched band…..thank you Malcolm! Martha and the Muffins debut album was very popular here, I have copy I bought back in the day. Mike
Once again, I am surprised to learn that a Canadian band had some success elsewhere. We really have no idea when a Canuck band makes inroads somewhere. "Today I learned," as the saying goes
@@EmbryonicRobot It’s probably going to be all Canadian women. I’ve been debating, but most of the ladies I’ve been listening to in recent years are from that humble land.
Interesting. Rough Trade sounds interesting. Bow Wow Wow makes an appearance. You and your Canadian snootiness. Just kidding. You’re not the Canadian version of Ben Rankins lol, you show other countries. You did a fine job here. I know I take some teasing for showing female artists quite a bit but it doesn’t seem like a big deal to me I guess. I feel like you show a good amount of female artists too. As long as the music does something to me, that’s all I care about.
I don't have the proper shirts to be the Canadian version of Ben Rankins. No one does, really. I keep thinking that I need to go shopping for shirts, but I think I'd rather spend my spare cash on music. I've noticed that you have some females in your music collection 🙃

I certainly remember High School Confidential from way back. Thanks to that, I have known who Carol Pope is most of my life!
Ha ha. High School Confidential got a lot of attention! I hated it when they bleeped in on the radio, so that compelled me to buy the record 🙃
Nice. I only know of Young Marble Giants and Bow Wow Wow. The others are new to me. Great share, Brian.
There are too many bands and singers in the world 😹 I don't know how anyone keeps up.

@@EmbryonicRobot Yes, had lunch and walked to a local record shop with Ben and Jack (Vinyl Martini). It was great to meet them in person.
Awesome!

I just did my response to this thread. Almost picked Bow Wow Wow too. Great band / Malcolm McLeran project. Rough Trade nice choice too!
I always wished I had seen Rough Trade, but I was stuck in a small town. I think Carole performed recently in Toronto, but I missed it.
Hi Brian. I didn;t know most of the artists you showed, so plenty to check out.
That could be my comment after watching many VC videos!

Feist is awesome. I had a crush on the Bow Wow Wow singer way back when. To be fair, I too much older than her 🙂

I like that Radio album cover. She looks so cool!
She is a very interesting looking woman 🙂
Good thread response Brian. A mixture of artists that I don't know and others that are more familiar. Thanks, Chris
Thanks, Chris. I had a few to choose from 🙂
I think my most limiting factor would be who I have seen live.
