- Cooling fans not working? The GTI cooling fan was not coming on. Today I will teach you how to diagnose and replace bad cooling fans in a MK5 GTI. If you cooling fan will not come on, the fan motor may be the issue. You also need to check the fan relay in some cars. This car has the fan control module build into the big fan.

Ok. This the second time you've saved me HUNDREDS, maybe thousands of dollars, when both repairs are combined. It's people like you that make RUclips great.
Awesome!!!!! Do me a favor and share the channel.
@@HumbleMechanic you got it!
I know you might not read this but this saved me a ton of time, a ton of money, and a huge headache. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart
I'm a big fan of this video.
😂😂😂😂
Thanks for watching guys. If things go well, you can probably do this job in about 45 minutes. Thanks for watching and if you're not subscribed MASH THAT BUTTON!!!
If the screws don't round off!
True! I actually had to replace the radiator because I couldn't get the bolt out. LOL
would the small fan failing tigger a cooling system performance code
Where do you live
Can thermostat effect the fans coming on and off?
And here’s the video I need. Thanks to Humble for always having me covered!
Thanks bearded Volkswagen God! You've saved me a lot of money, plus a bunch of Vaseline at my local dealership!
😂
Appreciate the easy to follow video. Replaced my fans the other day and happy it fixed my issue. Thank you!
Used this video to change my cooling fans in my b6 Passat 3.6. Really good straightforward video. I appreciate the tips and tricks in your videos
Great video Charles, your "DIY" content is perfect. Keep up the good work bud
Thank you so much!!!
Ha diagnosis!! My fan is about to fall out lol. Your video is great though, love how you get into detail and save us time on research.
Wonderful video, simple and easy demostration
Hi sir! at the beginning of the video
you mentioned that you will show how to diagnose the fan module, but since the
small fan was obviously damaged you skipped that part. how can I diagnose the
fan module? Do you have another link or
video or set of instructions to diagnose the fan module? Please share. Great video By the way!!! Thanks!
Big fan of your videos they have helped me out of a couple tight spots. I had a mk5 jetta GLI 2.0t FSI, currently have a 2012 Beetle 2.5l, x2 2013 VW Jetta 2.0l TDI: 1 a sedan and 1 a sportwagen.
Thanks so much!! I will do this tomorrow, although mine was not to replace the fan, but rather to slide it down a bit so I can pull a nut that fell inside the fan. I was trying to put back the throttle body pipe and the nut fell and slid down the fan housing. Anyways, this will help me get that nut out. Thanks again!
Great step by step video, thanks.
Good video... I had to replace the large fan on my MK5 jetta last summer. The process is exactly the same, except on mine, the bottom radiator hose is attached to the fan support with a clamp, just had to undo the clamp and pull the hose back and bit and it came out smoothly and back in smoothly.
Great job Humble Mechanic, Thank you bro
Yeah good video, i had to do my big cooling fan about a month ago on my Scirocco R as the fan would not stop running even with the key out of the ignition, it was the fans modual that was faulty, did it myself and all is good now. Keep up with the awesome videos.
i had the sane issue on my audi a3 fans came on automatically faulty control module too
Explained so well in easily understandable steps. Thanks man
Thank you for the tutorial. Was really easy except for lining up the screw holes in the dark alone for me. But I got it.
Thank you for your video, this helped me confidently replaced the fan assembly on my 2008 Jetta GLI. The screw behind the AC line (top passenger side) was a pain to get to. I had to use a multi-joint or wobble extension adapter for my ratchet.
Yeah the two on the passenger side can be tricky. Great job getting it done
A1 Auto: Repair Tips & Secrets Only Mechanics Know also helped you 👀
Thanks for the video. My Mk5 TDI 2.0 radiator and fans were replaced by a crash repairer but the air con didn't work. I took it to an air con place, they regassed it, and that made it work while the car was moving, but with the fans not working, it didn't cool while idling at a stop. I looked up the engine bay fuse box diagram, and sure enough, the 10A fuse SB8 for coolant fan had failed (probably due to the fans jamming up in the collision). I replaced it and it's all working as it should.
A very good explanation towards the process and great visuals. As mentioned below, yikes! $800 for some fans does seem a bit steep. Nice editing too Charles.
Thank you so much :)
love the vice grip pliers
Thank You Good Sir. You were a Tremendous Help.
Great info. Thanks for the video.
Fan--tastic video as always!
Thanks man it fixed my issue. Thank you!
Simplemente el mejor en los Volkswagen 👍👍
Thanx man this was really helpful!!
Great work as always, but you could of made it perfect by doing some "cosmetic" things.by replacing the rusted bolts, nuts, and metal clips holding the wires,or paint them to give it the fresh look, and it would be nice if you got us a video on how to replace the hood strut (even though it's an easy job) but it may be difficult for others.Thank you.
Thanks for showing me how to jack up my mk5 correctly too haha
Hey Charles great video as always. I am a long time subscriber from NJ. I have a question for you and this will determine if I go German or not. I love the German cars and have noticed that they are structurally more solid (doors close better and with more “oomph”). I am soon going to be in the market for a new daily driver that is a daily, also fun to drive, and had good to decent gas mileage. I work over an hour away from my house one way. I love the GTI. The way it feels, drives, and handles. I also love the golf diesel because I test drove that too but unfortunately in an automatic. So my question to you is, is the newer GTI (past 2 years to current) a reliable car? I have always heard the joke of VW meets being lit up with check engine lights. I don’t know how true that so I am asking the expert. I love manual transmissions. So having said that, is there anything I need to know about modern GTIs with and manual or modern Golf diesels with an manual that is an issue and needs constant or pretty constant upkeep and maintenance. FYI I am coming from a Japanese car where are have never ever had issues. This car or the past 4 I have owned. Just to give you my mindset.
I had to remove the fan shroud not so long ago on my Mk6....and that exact same screw snapped off in the radiator. Luckily i was able to slowly work out the remains of the screw with a pair of screw pliers. Mine wasn't even as rusted, it just went - must get some metal fatigue from movement of the assembly.
This has been a great source to understand how these two pals work on our VW. However, I’d like to seek your advice. I got my two fans replaced a few weeks back in a repair shop and I realized that there was some kind of noise coming from the front grill while at idle. After I stopped the car’s engine and checked what was probably going on. I feel the main fan is loose and that could be the reason why it’s not working properly or not working at all. I can’t really tell as the small one is doing all the job and there’s no overheating or anything like that. The blades seem to move back and forth while tapping with the finger. I’ll take the car back to the shop, but is there anything that you think I can do on my own?
Hey man, the video is really good DIY,straight to the point. i have a mark5 GTI aswell, and lately my fans will not turn on at ALL,i checked the two fuses near the battery(that are screwed to place) they are ok,but i dont know what else to check, i took off shroud, and supplied 12V,both fans turn on great,no mechanical friction,i dont know how to test the module, all i know they will not turn on neither by AC or engine coolant heat up,and NEITHER via command by Diagnose/tester. any ideas?
i have been searching everywhere for a video just like this THANK YOU!! what would you recommend doing if the small fan is constantly on? even when the key and engine is off.? i have been on this problem for days!
Probably a bad main fan. It has the module /controller in it
great video I'm the UK and have Touran with the 2.0 FSI engine that the fans have stopped working they work wit he a/c on but not when the engine gets hot would it bet he module in the large fan?
Cool! I'm a big fan of this.
Hah, I see what you did there, funny
I can best you. I'm an air conditioner or this. Lol
Great video, thanks for the info! You the man Charles! I know you generally preach OEM, but have you had any experience with the aftermarket fans out there?
These are aftermarket. Other than trimming that tab on the connector it was all good
This also applies to the MK6 GTI also. Just replaced the condenser fan motor on mine.
Good Job
That miniature electric wrench if yours is really nice.
Nice guide. Thank you! About the car... it looks like you removed it from the bottom of the ocean. All the screws were so rusty... even the high amperage fuses were coroded. Never seen that before.
Yeah this thing was a rusty mess.
Hello I had own Jetta Mk5 and you videos have been soo helpful. Thank you for share your knowledge!!
And hoop you have one about the windshield wipers on the Mk5. My are getting stock on the middle of the windshield.
I do have the footage. Still have to edit the video.
HumbleMechanic I know you most be crazy busy
Thank and I will be looking forward to seeing that video
Thanks alot
Hi Charles, seen lots of your videos in the past. found this one looking for a DIY fan replacement. I have a feeling that the screws will break when I do this job on my rabbit. Would you know which screws i need to replace them? It looks like there are 2 types available.
if the fans are super loud - one can assume the power to the fans is good, and the fans need replacing right?
@HumbleMechanic I was just told from VW that my fans need to be replaced on my Mk5 R32 when I brought it in due to AC cooling issues (was cooling a little off and on but never really cold at all) the quote for repair is $1500 that includes parts. Is replacing the fans in the Mk5 R32 the same as in this video? If so you will have saved me a ton!!! Thanks for the videos you make they are great!!!
Hi good video, do have the specs for just replaced the brushes on the fans or where can I find just the brushes for the mk5 thanks
Спасибо за видео!
Hey man,
Great video, loved it.
I have a MK4.
Fans dont work, tried making a direct connection from temperature sensor switch, which had 12V shown on main line. Still fans didnt work. Do you think issue can be with fan control module?
I hear a loud tik sound when i try to directly connect the fan connections from the control module.
Thoughts?
@HumbleMechanic hey , love the videos , really informative and helpful. I’m looking for a bit more advise tho, I’ve mk5 gti and the large fan comes on once the engine is cold and does this in 10/15 second bursts and will continually do this draining the battery. Do you think this is the control module? I’ve had is checked VCDS and there no fault registered!
"If things go well" LOL well whoops I have Mk 6 GTI, yes everything applies here but woe unto you who have deeper Intercooler like my Unitronic-- you will have to disconnect the silicone hose at bottom of metal intake runner (the one with temp sensor on it) and unbolt the support to same metal pipe but not remove the pipe-- then you can just barely get the fan assembly down and out like in the video. My large fan was working so I only did the small one with an OEM fan; this is too much work to risk doing again if a dodgy aftermarket fan fails. THANKS for the awesome video!!
Great video Charles. Not MKV Related, but I thought you were going to do much more DIY’s for the R32?
:) plenty of mk4 videos still to make.
I have the same exact problem with the smaller fan not working and that's causing the AC not to blow cold air when the car is stopped which means the ac compressor is not getting cooled by the smaller fan that's directly facing it. I will buy the whole unit with both fans tomorrow on ECS Tuning.
Thank you for this, I was gonna buy whole new fans but I tried with the fuses, for some reason the fuse box inside the car there was no orange 40amp fuse for the fans, I put some in there and now my large fan is spinning
also i had fans replace both like u did on my audi a3 but now the big fan has mechanical Resistance to it and it wont spin and after spending so much money to replace them i might just add a fan myself that turns on by a switch in the cabin
Big fan of this video. I have a 2016 jetta sport 1.8. After heavy rains and driving my car through a huge puddle, my cooling fan started to make a noise. I opened up the hood and notice that the big fan was not coming on and the little fan was working at high speed making the noise whenever it came on. The shop wants to charge me around $800 to fix the problem. I know how to work on cars and do all of my own car repairs once I know what the issue is. Is there any knowledge you can share?
I have a 2006 Jetta TDi. Is my process going to be the same as shown in the video? Also, when running the output test using VCDS the fans were very very noisy. I don’t have any codes should I replace as a preventative measure?
Great Video! I have a 2009 jetta tdi 2.0L and the small fan works but the big fan works too but keeps running after i shut my car off for over 1hr killing my battery. Any solutions?
Anyone know if this is the same procedure for the 2005 Golf Gti MK IV GTi 1.8t? I keep seeing videos with Golfs with single fans and mine has dual fans, also anyone know where the fan switch is located and if it's in the same location as the single fan switch videos i see and last how to test those fans and switch or switches? Also as you mentioned your smaller fan has resistance which appears bad, but neither of my fans have any resistance and yet neither of my fans come on...which leads me to my fan switch maybe bad? Thanks great videos !
Hey Charles, just wondering is it possible to swap the radiator with this same technique instead of taking off the front end?
Thanks and hop you see this 😁
Thanks for the video, as always is great to watch and learn... I have some issues with my MK5, the fans work great with the AC engaged but if the AC is not engaged the vehicle sometimes takes longer to have them on, as a matter of a fact the fans go on until the temperature of the engine out is around 118 C ... and the duty cycle is around 87 % it is they turn on when is kind of an emergency, otherwise the fans never or mostly never turn on around 95 C (which I think is the right temperature to have them on)... this is an erratic behavior. I have checked the values of the engine out and rad out and the sensors seems to be sensing properly the temperature... you guys have any idea of what os going on? Thanks in advance!!!
Maybe a module failing. Not dead but going dead
Im having the exact same issue. What did you do to solve it? My gti is doing this aswell. The fans will work fine with the A/C but will not come on at 90°. They only come on when its like an emergency. So what was the issue and how did you fix it?
Charles, have you come across radiator fans, usually the main one, which seem to turn fine by hand but won't work? I've had a situation with my previous A3 Sportback that the fans weren't kicking in when they should. Dropped the fan shroud, opened the cover on the motor and found that the motor was clogged with dust from the brushes and brushes were also stuck. There was still material left on the brushes so I just cleaned them up and made sure they were moving freely. Put it back together (can't remember how I managed to get that cover back on the motor) and it worked ever since until I traded it for my mk2 TT 3.2 a few years later. Of course cleaning up the dust isn't something that I would do for a customer car unless the customer understands that it might not be a long-term repair or it might not even work at all after it so I might end up replacing the fan(s) anyway..
Good !
Nice videos Charles,
Do you have any similar videos on replacing the fans on an mk4 gti vr6?
Not on the vr6. But depending on which on, it may be very similar
Hey Charles, how much does it cost to replace the timing belt on a 09 mk5 gti ? Thanks in advance
Wowww... I will surely replace my cooling fan..with system of dual fan...thankss
Is this a common issue with the new beetles as well. I have one fan not wokring on my 2000 beetle 1.8T. I had a feeling I might be replacing these lol
Hey man how’s it going ? I was wondering I have a 2009 mk5 Jetta with the TSI engine. I notice that only one fan works and the other doesn’t. It hasn’t been an issue so far no light no weird driving or anything like that. Is it safe to be driving like that ? Again only one fan is working
Thanks. I have a 2009 volkswagen jetta 2.0t wolfsburg edition. My small fan doesn't work the large fan works but will not shut off unless I unhook my battery. Don't know if I should just replace the whole fan shroud?
Hi, thanks for sharing.
Just replaced the AC control valve in my 2006 Jetta, charged up the freon; Nothing, same crap, just blows ambient air. AC fan NOT kicking on w/ the AC switch on dash, but it Does Spin Freely by hand, nice & quiet, just doesn't come on when u push the AC button on. Do I need to bypass the high pressure switch? Had to on a friend's car to get it to start working, but that was a Corolla.
How do I bypass the high pressure switch? Inspected connector at high press switch, looks fine, clean & such. It has 3 pins, so to bypass, which ones do I connect w/ a paperclip or wire?
Any idea/s much appreciated. - thanks, take care
Hi
I realised that the new fans you fitted have their blades the opposite direction and the small fan has less blades
I'm assuming the new fans rotate the other way, anticlockwise? saying so because the blades are facing the other way,
So if I replace only the small fan I guess I would be have 2 fans spinning opposite directions?
Having a similar issue, my AC doesn't cool when idling. I noticed the smaller fan doesn't come on when I turn on the AC to the coolest setting. Since the small cooling fan isn't seized like the one in the video. What's the most affordable way of checking the smaller fan?
Is there a video on how to use VCDS to test it?(after checking the fuses of course)
Did you manage to fix your issue
@HumbleMechanic is it possible to remove the radiator from the bottom as well? Same way you did the cooling fans?
What did you do with that broken screw? Were you able to remove it without taking everything apart?
No. I actually had to replace the radiator. I will cover that in a radiator video
@HumbleMechanic Where did you get the replacement fan shroud bolts from? I can't seem to find them anywhere, not even FCPEuro! Some insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
my small fan quit working with engine warmed up and AC going. i pulled the fans out from the top and popped in the new fan minimal problem. just remove air intake/snorkel tube. use a mini ratchet with any needed attachments to get out the 4 screws. holding the fan assembly in place to get in the screws by myself was tricky but possible.
I have a question. The large cooling fan on my mk6 won’t shut off. I hit a little bit of water last night on my drive home and now it doesn’t switch off unless I disconnect the battery. Thoughts?
How cool! I'm a fan. ;-)
mine got jammed lol I need to replace my smaller fan on my mk6 ty for the video
Does this fan module control the a/c compressor to kick on?
I have a 2015 Passat 1.8l turbo, I replaced, the sensor on the compressor, and the expansion valve, and after all I noticed that the fans don't work with the a/c on they work but only when the car is moving at this time the a/c is cold. Can you help me please? Thanks for the work you put to help us.
My car does the same? How did you manage to fix this?
@@mr_luke19 I didn't fix it completely, I connected a switch to the fan so I can activated manually and it worked. I traded in the car, the dealership wanted $2000 to fix it and they could not warranty it was the compressor they were saying could be the computer.
So you have a video for replacing a radiator on a 2008 vw rabbit or where I can find one. Do I have to remove the bumper or can I remove it from the bottom like the fans. Please get back to me I have a leak on my radiator
This video was super helpful to me, but now the fricking new fan it won't stop running. What should i do next?
Cool! ha Say, do VW fans come with brushless motors?
i've taken my set out twice, only because i want tofixmy ac(some time power line to the compressor only have 7 volt . now i have recognize this small fan wasn't spinning every time i open the hood. looks like a little jam when i tried to spin it.
I was just testing out my new TOPDON Artidiag 600S diagnostic code reader on my Skoda Octavia VRS and it came up with fault on fan saying obstruction whilst running health check.I checked the small fan that moves freely but the larger fan stops like its catching on something.
Hey Charles I have a 2014 vw Jetta 1.8t and any time I turn on the a/c the fans speed up and cause a loud vibration and I'm trying to find out what it could be I checked both fans they both work and turn by hand smooth any ideas?
Same issue here, did you figure it out?
Hey man, love the vids!
My mk5 gti has the fans coming on once I turn off the ignition. Sounds like its going to take off. would this be worth doing?
thanks.
Possible. But fans on after shutting car off can be normal. Be sure to check faults
@@HumbleMechanic Wow I appreciate the reply!
I have checked for faults, no CEL so its clean.
This isnt normal, temperature ventures above 90 sometimes. Im confident this isnt normal, as ive owned 3 of these cars over 7yrs and never heard it before.
Thanks again.
Hi, for mk 5 jettas, on the 4 wire connecter to the fan unit, is it normal for power to be present on the bigger power wire when the key is off
I'm having an issue on my 2008 R32 that might be involving the fans. The large fan spins but I can't tell if the small one does, a/c works fine but large fan has got loud before, never seemed alarming. Car got hot yesterday morning when idling with a/c blasting for about 20 minutes, went up to around 220°F, went back down to normal when I started moving. It did have an engine code for P0480 and a DTC for the smaller fan (V177) having "restricted movement."
I drove it again 2 times afterwards and had no issues, all fuses are fine and both fans move freely. Codes/DTCs cleared and did not reappear yet. Could this be a pending module failure? I live in Texas heat so I always drive with a/c on in 100°+ weather lol
2:25 sound effect couldn't have been any more accurate.
Please help? I own a Scirocco 2.0 TDi. I was wondering, should the cooling fans both come on every time that the Air Conditioning is activated? I don't think that the air temperature coming through the AC is getting cold enough, it is cool but not cold temperature. Thanks
I have a mk5 gti 2009, I have been keeping up with the book for maintenance and changing the oil every 5k miles. Although I have 130k miles on it, I received a free dsg transmission from the dealer as the original went out at 97k miles. I’m just wanting to know what would be some good preventative maintenance to do with my car. (Also if anyone knows what would be an suspension setup for handling, the car currently has stock suspension with 235mm tires on it. Thank you, replies appreciated :)
Bapo Rapo far as i know they have problem with cam followers
Change oil every 8000 kilometers
Dsg fluid every 40 000 kilometers
Brake fluid every 2 year ATE SL6
@humblemechanic can you stand behind these parts? or the brand? I've had china parts before in my VW and for some reason they don't work well.
Same. They seem great. But I didn’t do long term testing.
But I don’t really have to stand behind them. FCP has lifetime warranty on parts. :)
I need ur help??
I am looking for the working of the regenerative braking system??
I have an 08 GTI that I can't get the fans to work. Fuses are good and I have replaced the fans as well as the coolant temp sensor but they still won't work. Any suggestions on what I should check/do next?
whats that tool youre using to test the fuses
