Good overview Matt and I support your reactions to how limited this feature is. I’m still giving some thought as to the use cases for this feature in its current state.
What was MS thinking when releasing this mess? Group calendar has been a high ranking user voice request for years and is said to be worked on close to a release as late as December. And then they release THIS that hardly no one requested! Also it’s kind of a group calendar since all meetings created, at least in the calendar attached to General channel DOES post to the team calendar and show up in Outlook, BUT meetings already in or created in the group calendar is not exposed here. How did they end up thinking this is a good idea?
I have a Teams team with 150+ team members that has multiple channels for collaboration. I also hold a monthly meeting for the membership. I really want to see Outlook calendar integration with the Channel Calendar such that when I create a meeting for the channel all 150+ members will get either an invitation email, or the meeting will just pop onto their calendars. I should not have to manually add all member names so they are aware of the meetings (reminders, calendar views, etc). I agree this is only 70% feature complete.
Thank you. Learn something from all your videos. Pre-ordered your book... like your graphics. (@05:30) FYI in Education version; if one selects the "class" template when creating a Team; channel meeting invites will go out to all members of the Team without having to enter individual recipients. Yes. Really. Wish this was true for all templates.
Hope this festure is really just an MVP to have any kind of meetings managed per Channel, including following by Channel, Non-teams meetings, Outlook support, etc.
Does the team (Sharepoint) own this calendar or does the user own the calendar? I need to make a calendar for a team that is an actual outlook calendar.
Technically, the owner of the Team likely owns the calendars. I assume calendar must live in Exchange (Outlook)-since it's consolidating existing Exchange calendar appointments-but at this point there's no way to surface it in Outlook. So, who owns it (again, at this point) is basically irrelevant based of the limited features you have.
@@jumpto365 from what I can tell the channel calendar is a filtered view on the 365 group calendar, as it is looked after by exchange. you can surface this in outlook if you use powershell to show the Team's 365 group in exchange clients then navigate to the outlook group's calendar tab. I have ended up turning this on for almost all teams in our tenant as the decent calendar integration was too needed!
Thanks for explaining and clearing up what it can and can't do At work i have created a team with about 20 Channels all for specific projects with staff assigned to 4 or 5 of the channels depending on role. A channel calendar would be really useful to track project dates and meetings etc. However integration with Outlook 365 calendar to ensure full visibility of diaries and to aid in scheduling when spending most of time in outlook. If I have a channel calendar set up in each channel do all the events pull into my central teams calendar? As this one pulls data from outlook it could be a central option? If it did pull into a central place like outlook/teams can you show/hide differing calendars e.g. I only want to focus on 4 or 5 of the projects/channels and ignore entries in the remaining calendars. Without this functionality it must be a nightmare to schedule a meeting using these alone
Hi, Do you know if it's possible to add in a channel calendar a meeting created from a external origin outside the channel? I try to explain, me I would like to have an unified calendar with all the meetings of my team toguether but some of them are internals one (that it no problem) but most of them are created by the customer... it's possible to add any "fake mail account" or something similar in order to "forwarded" these external meeting to this calendar? There is any other Team Application that could be useful for do this?? Thanks a lot in advance! BR,
My team was looking at this feature to use only for posting when they would be out of office. However it looks like this calendar only let's you schedule "meetings." Any suggestions?
Is there a way to prevent it from broadcasting the invitation to the whole group? I have a decent use case for this, but I only want the recipients I specifically add to get the notice.
Hi, thank you for the video. I mostly use MS Teams App on my phone, the problem is that I cannot find the channel calendar tab on my phone, I clicked more within the team, it did not show up. But everything works well on the laptop. Anyone could help me with that?
Can you add two calendars to one channel and then overlay them? example: Once Channel: Calendar for Office A and a second Calendar for Office B and meld them to see all appointments at the same time?
What is the Powershell code to show a Teams O356 group please? Our team would like to *turn off* that feature that emails everyone in the team whenever we set-up a channel meeting. It sounds like exposing that hidden group and then changing the emailing setting mentioned will stop that mass emailing for every channel meeting. Don‘t get me wrong, I love a lot of Microsofts stuff, but why does a basic feature like this only come out after Teams has been released for a couple of years already?
I personally don’t care much for teams. Too many items to list. HOWEVER, in regards to this specific topic and in regards to team collaboration, IMPO, this is only a 20% solution at best. Teams (not MS Teams but an actual team consisting of humans) should have a central repository that they can easily reference, LIKE VACATION, like reminders, deadlines, etc. Maybe something like that does exist in the MS world I’m just not aware? If so, by all means please do share and enlighten me. In any event, appreciate the video!
Good video, terrible feature. This is perhaps the most confusing thing I've seen yet for Teams/Outlook/SharePoint. No way am I going to roll this out to clients. But thanks for clearing up the issue with Guests. Was wondering about that.
This is NOT the Group calendar LIMITATIONS CAN'T use in private channels NOT supported NO Outlook integration NO SharePoint calendar integration Wow ... you're not selling it ... but it's great to have this feedback, many thanks and I hope more positive feeling for this year.
This is one of those things where people are waiting with baited breath for the actual Group calendar, so the moment they hear “Team calendar tab”, they assume it’s that. So they need to know what it’s not more than what it is, tbh, to set expectations. It’s like having seen something you really want for Christmas early when snooping, only to not receive it because that was actually for someone else. Tough situation for all.
This is the kind of info that vendors rarely provides, so it is very helpful when experts in the field can provide clarity about what it is - and also what it isn't. Thanks Matt!

Agree it is a 60% solution and that the Group Calendar unlocks more use cases.
Very many thanks!
Nice video. Question: can we create an event on a Team channel calendar without a Teams video conferencing link?
Does the team (Sharepoint) own this calendar or does the user own the calendar?

BR,
Can you use the channel calendar as the basis for MS Bookings forms?
My team was looking at this feature to use only for posting when they would be out of office. However it looks like this calendar only let's you schedule "meetings." Any suggestions?
The app shows for my business account - but not on my girlfriend's family plan. Will it be avialable there as well in time?
Is there a way to prevent it from broadcasting the invitation to the whole group? I have a decent use case for this, but I only want the recipients I specifically add to get the notice.
Are you in the education space? Outside of education, invites to the group are turned off by default.
@@jumpto365 Thanks Matt, but in our case (not education) invites are sent to the whole team by default :(

Very informative, as always. Can somebody give me more information about those powershell commands you are speaking of at 4:28 ? Thanks
Try this: techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-ama/why-the-teams-calendar-not-visible-in-outlook/m-p/377591/highlight/true#M4454

This definitely is a ~20% solution. Look into Planner (deadlines), Group calendar (vacation), and Tasks in Teams (reminders). All in Teams.
