How To Restore/Repaint Cairns Leather Helmet (Step 1: Stripping)

- A step by step process on how I strip a cairns leather helmet. I’ve done quite a few in the last 2 years. This is how I do it. There are several other ways that I’ve known people to do, but here goes. I will post the painting video at some point, my phone takes lousy videos.

I'd really like to see a video of priming and painting it!
I’ve done somewhere around 15-20 helmet refurbs (both mine and other members of my department)
The easiest, and fastest way I’ve found to strip the paint…….. use a small torch, similar to one a plumber would use to solder pipes together.
Heat small sections of the paint until it begins to bubble and stop. Do that to the entire helmet.
The bubbling releases the paint from the shell perfectly. Once it has cooled completely the paint is very brittle and flakes right off.
Then with a small, stiff bristle tooth brush get into the small creases along the ribs.
Very little sanding is needed since the paint lifts off the leather and doesn’t need to be scraped away.
Clean it up with a dust pan and broom or a shop vac.
For painting I use high temperature black engine enamel. Multiple light coats dry much much faster than doing a somewhat thicker covering coat. It also was available in yellow.
On a weekend day I would do 4-5 helmets.
Word of caution…
Do not hold the flame on the paint any longer than it takes to allow it to bubble!
The leather will eventually burn if the flame is held in one place for too long, resulting in the need for a lot of sanding.
RIT Irons, would mind answering some questions, maybe through email?
Love this video! This is really helpful and informational and I may give this a shot!
Really awesome video
That was an awesome video!!
When’s part 2! I’m getting a helmet I need to work on!
Hellz yeah !!! Great job and thank you for the video. Any advise on replacing the brass ring that holds the head band and ear flap
Michael Todd replacing the brass ring is a process. There are rivits that hold it in. Getting replacement rings is almost impossible. You can contact Jason Marsella with Rekindled lids and he may be able to service that for you.
Nice Video Brother , I was going to Refurbish my N6a but got a Phenix TL2 leather helmet and love it , much lighter and all around nicer. i wish i had a Pre-MSA helmet.
If you want to sell your N6A please let me know. I'm looking for my first leather helmet.
@@CraigS_427 my N6a is in rough shape since I got my TL2 I used it for live fire training. I recommend saving and get a Phenix TL2 I promise you will love it, it's lighter, better balanced and much more comfortable than my MSA.
@@NessNik I'm actually interested in trying my first restoration more than using it for a service lid. If you'd let it go I'll give you my email. I'm in PA.
Is it possible to condition the leather prior to painting to revitalize the leather? Or will the paint not stick as well, even after resting
Will this method work on the new leathers? I’ve got a2022 I need to go from red to black?
If you were to take the rivets out of the brass cap and eagle, what specific tool would you use to set the new rivets?
😂😂 rivet tool
I stripped my helmet, sanded it. Primed it and sanded it again. Sprayed it and now it’s bubbling. Any suggestions?
part 2?
You ever paint it?
Can you post a follow up video of the helmet?
Totally Delirious I actually ended up painting it red instead. But I can do a follow up video.
Would you do a follow up/part 2? @@djidentity
I've heard of people using Citri-Strip and a lower pressure- pressure washer. Anyone else hear of that tactic?
you should power wash after the striping, it would probably make your life a lot easier
What flat black paint do you reccomend?
Sherwin Williams.
Part 2
And that's it? Where is part 2?
How do I remove the riveted front holder?
You have to drill them out.
Won’t this destroy the leather ?
No. Not if you let it dry appropriately.
Is it possible to paint a plastic helmet like the Cairns 660ce
A Scottish Guy yes it is
What type of paint did you use?
how much does it cost to ship to Russia?
Lol it’s not even for sale
Never heard of "carns" I've heard of "ka rens"
water juan water two that’s my Kentucky accent. I’m aware of what cairns is.
Cairns, not Carns. Attention to detail, remember?
I’m aware of ‘Cairns’. That’s how I pronounce it. You say OL or Oil? I say Ol.
@@everything_doc There always has to be one in the bunch, aye Parker ?
