    The last shot of the helmet was a HUGE surprise! In addition to being a firefighter/paramedic, I am also a Medical Examiner.. I instantly recognized the helmet by the shield on the front of it; because, I was the Medical Examiner on a fatal wreck where the owner of that helmet was on KFD Truck 41, literally two nights ago! 🤯 Perfect example of a small world! Also, great job on the helmet, it looked great!

    One Shot was the approved “touch up” paint recommended by cairns in the Pre-MSA days. I am almost sure that was the paint used to produce the helmets while in NJ.

      Wow good to know. I’ve used one shot before so I thought it would hold up nicely. So far it has. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

    Could you also thin this paint with mineral spirits? If so would there be any downside other than maybe more time to dry? I’m about to do the same job you did once I finish some other repairs to the helmet

    • @speedy94-

      Not really sure, the stuff I used came fro Tractor Supply and it’s an enamel reducer. One Shot is an enamel paint. You could try a test spot, however the reducer I used was very inexpensive. Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!

      Thank you! I needed up heading to TSC and got the same stuff. I used your recommendation of “little thicker than milk” since I’ve never used enamel paint or a spray gun for that matter, and it turned out GREAT! It looks just like the one you shot and I’m a total beginner. Thanks for the tips and great tutorial

      Oh man, it’s been so long lol. I usually mix stuff up to the consistency of milk, 😂. I’ll thin some down this weekend and see if can get ya a better idea!

    What did you mean by glaze? Clearcoat? If so what do you recommend

    • @speedy94-
      @speedy94-  3 месяца назад

      Glaze is a product that’s used auto body repair. Usually a two part product, one will be glaze the other is activator or hardener you mix in. Then you spread it, let it dry then sand it to a smooth finish then prime and paint. Clearcoat is another product you spray last to give a lasting shine and uv protection. Hope that helps! Can you give us the proper ratio of paint to thinner when mixing for an HVLP gun?

    • @speedy94-
      @speedy94-  8 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve been mixing paint for years, lol. Didn’t really have a proper ratio. If you’re using the cheap purple harbor freight gun just mix it to the consistency a tad thicker than milk. You want it to flow well, it won’t lay smooth at first but as it dries it should level out a bit. Spray it in light coats. Hopes this helps, best of luck.

    If I want to put a new crown and eagle on my helmet, how would I do that? Also, if I wanted to replace the ear flaps in my helmet, is that a possibility? For reference, it’s an 85’ N5A

    • @speedy94-
      @speedy94-  2 года назад

      Not exactly sure. I’ve only painted that one for a good friend. I’ll look at another helmet and see if I can come up with anything.

    • @bobsutton5786

      definitely possible for crown and eagle the liner and ear flaps tho is possible but very tricky you'd be better off sending it to someone like capital city or rekindled lids to have that done

    What ratio did you thin it down to?

    • @speedy94-
      @speedy94-  Год назад

      Ok so one shot is a thick paint so you need to thin ( this will sound crazy) to the consistency of a lil thicker than milk. I used the purple harbor freight gun so I wouldn’t possibly contaminate my good guns. The purple gun will do a good job, if it’s to thick and sputters just add a lil more thinner. Just to let ya know the helmet is holding up great! Let me know if have any more questions. Thanks for watching

    • @markjackson812
      @markjackson812 Год назад

      Did you use a full can of one shot? How much thinner did you use?

    • @speedy94-
      @speedy94-  Год назад

      @@markjackson812 no I only used maybe a quarter of the can. If you’re gonna prime like I did with the trans tar you can get it in black. That way you would need less paint to cover it.
