Love me some Car Wizard. So chill. He seems like the most laid back guy.
That is until you wreck his Prelude.
wait ... is it too early ?
"Ever have a mechanic get the diagnosis wrong?" My mechanic can be a real bone head at times. Replaced the computer on a Durango when it was stuck in limp mode, only had 2nd & 3rd gear. Turns out that the transmission wasn't getting positive voltage, the wire was broken near the fuse / relay box. Ran a jumper wire to it and fixed the issue. I'm the mechanic, I'm the bone head. But, lesson learned. Now it's test and confirm for certainty every single time before replacement.
VT247
Don't feel bad. You're not the only one out there. Lol
A garage replaced an alternator because the battery wasn't charging. They had the car for over a week saying there were other problems that they didn't bill me for. Then my ABS went out, I traced it back to fuse box on top of the battery which the garage had made a temporary fix on. Turned out that was real reason the car wasn't charging. It was a 15 minute job to replace the fuse box which I did myself. Should've cost me under a hundred not the 500 I had to pay for a new alternator.
My tbss was doing the same thing. My is a ground issue that i need to sort.
That's a fireable act in many shops. We're not paid to guess or just say I don't know what's wrong with it. The only comebacks I had were parts failures. I took great pride in my work.
ive been there.. replacing expensive parts and not fixing the problem.
Its not always as easy. especially on cars with intermittant issues. ive had lots of cases in which there were multiple parts that could be the cause of (by example) blowing fuses from time to time or something like that, and after ripping half the car apart still no definitive answer to whats causing certain circuits to fail like once a week when driving..
I love how laid back and informative this channel is. Thanks for bringing us this content Wizard.
You don't appreciate VROOOOOMMM REV UP YOUR ENGINES!!!!!
Luke Washburn whats to appreciate, , the lack of using jackstands, and comparing every car to a 94 Celica wifes lexus
Man the greatest channel , useful and logical trouble shooting . 95% electronics is the majority of being able to correctly find the problem .
Noticed the blades had been upgraded to 9 from 7 on the previous turbo. Looks like they did quite a few modifications not just the wastegate.
well spotted!
Also the manifold itself is slightly different. kind of difficult to be sure because he goes from one to the other and the camera angle is slightly different but I'm pretty certain that the exhaust runners are slightly different.
@@kens97sto171 they are. They are slightly cocked more than the previous version. I was curious if it was easier to put together.
@@thereissomecoolstuff
Glad someone else saw it too. kept kind of looking at it and thinking to myself it looked different but with the camera constantly moving it wasn't easy to be sure.
Since that exhaust turbine side had been altered with the bushing. That's all one piece with the exhaust manifold. So I'm guessing it's just a completely different or newly designed part.
still boggles my mind that you could have a turbo failure at 100k.
It's one of the reasons to stay away from German built stuff. Love the way they drive and look but mechanically they're a pain in the ass to work on and they break way too often.
it's not fair your town has the car ninja and the car wizard..
They need to have a dual. LMAO
Yea I got confused about the car ninja? Is he just a bmw guy?
While I haven’t had the pleasure of taking my car to the Wizard, my girlfriend’s X5 was acting up we took it to the car ninja and I couldn’t have asked for better service. I agree, Wichita is extremely blessed to have such an honest couple of mechanics
Josh Gladstone no he does all European cars but bmw is his speciality
They are lucky to have Hoovie buying all those disaster cars.
One week the shop looked empty the next week its packed full of cars. One good thing from the youtube videos it looks to have made business good for you Wizard!! I've always said treat people fairly and offer sound advice and they will continue to come back to you!!!
This is the best channel. I'm not a mechanic, english isn't event my first langage, but I just love to learn by watching the wizard. Keep on the good work !
I love to see good people doing great in their enterprises but none made me happier than seeing the Wizard soo busy. Congratulations! Best mechanic channel ever.
Spent over $1,000 trying to fix a misfiring Jeep Cherokee. Paid to replace fuel injectors, then fuel pump, and the problem still persisted. Ended up replacing the rear O2 sensor myself on a recommendation from a different mechanic, and it completely solved the issue.
As a non car guy I've learnt to never understand estimate the basics behind the physics :
1. Sensors.
2. Spark plugs and fuses.
3. Voltages.
Any bad reading in the incoming sensors = trouble. Like someone holding your head under water.
Dude you have a personal life, running a obviously busy and successful shop, so the amount of videos you do release is awesome, and the message and information is delivered in a direct manner which gives them even more value, and for that i thank you and mrs wizard for all the time and effort you manage to put in to your videos🤘
Thinking he is making more easy money making videos than making money from shop
Back to work Wizard! And keep your integrity going...the big reason I subscribed. The planet needs more technicians with integrity. Too many crooked techs out there.
"Turbos are like brakes" is the word to the wise. The thing will wear out some day and it will require replacement.
Or start smoking with bad seals
Then everything is a brake
Hope it's not diesel when she goes too.
I oddly love runaway diesels, kind of a morbid curiosity thing. Watch as this machine commits suicide from poor maintenance.
@@Loachie90 for real, literally everything
And yet every heavy duty engine in the world is turbocharged from mine trucks to marine engines.
Another reason why I love naturally aspirated engines. No expensive superchargers or turbos to add to maintenance costs.
We're looking at you HONDA.
Also no low rpm torque, high fuel consumption...
yeah they're great when you have to wring their necks to get power from them.
You pay for it many times over in fuel cost.
I am a bit ignorant on this topic, does a turbo decreases the fuel consumption?
The Wizard is so professional . Im glad he is on RUclips.

I bet she was wearing her face mask! Lol
I'm guessing she was on her way to talk to the manager lol
LMAO these are freakin everywhere here in California just like ugly ass Tesla’s and Prius’s haha
I'm glad to see that you work on older cars like that '64 Impala. I had a '68 Ford Galaxie that I would normally have done all the work on, but I had a problem that I could *not* figure out, and I had to take it to *five* different shops before I found someone willing to work on it. Most modern mechanics won't touch a car if they can't plug in their $5,000 scan tool and have it tell them what's going on. They've not been trained how to *think* about a problem, they've only been trained to throw parts at it based on computer codes. We need more mechanics like you in the world.
Car Wizard, I like your common sense and logical thinking along with your honesty. Before long, you will own 10 shops the same size as yours in your area. Word of mouth and these videos will grow your business expodentially. I also like your new employee, Mr. Mercedes or Mr. Benz.
Hard to maintain control/processes once you expand. It always comes down to getting the right person.
Mr wizard, you are an inspiration! I've been in the business since 2003, and I've always wanted my own shop. Watching you is renewing my desire to work towards that goal again.
Keep being you mang!
As a GTI owner, I guessed it was a bad turbo. :D Great advice about ruling out all the cheap diagnoses before jumping straight to the expensive fix.
What a great guy. He's really busy in his shop, yet he still finds time to make a video for us.
Amazing priorities eh?!? 😂
I work is a vw dealer and I cant tell u how many turbos ive done on these 2 liters got my time down to 2.5 hours
What's the book time on one of these?
I have a family member with a 2011 2.0T Tiguan that feels like it has significant post lag till 2500-2700rpm and then kicks in so hard that even if you set off in 2nd gear, it spins the tires like crazy but then feels like boost falls off after 4500-5000rpm. Is this a diverted valve issue or possibly a cracked turbo housing? It doesn’t sound like it has a leak. It does have a rattle when you let off (it seems like any time you have gained any boost and it needs to release it so could it be wastegate like on this Audi?). I’ve been trying to figure it out but can’t get a definite answer. Also it’s leaking oil for the third time not from a different spot (looks like the back of the engine this time so I’m guessing it could be the turbo, it’s at 100k miles)
Yup. And timing chains and carbon cleaning.
@@austinformedude dude. I had to sue VW under NY lemon law . they changed timing chain and still had issues. by around 70k I had a brand new engine put in that has close to 30k on it now... no issues 2013.5 GLI
I love how he goes threw the car and actually finds the problem not many will so that
I like your rationale and ethics on repairing customer’s vehicles. I wish you were close by and I would have you as my mechanic happily.
Very sensible changing the turbo out, its like you said, now the customer will have years of piece of mind, and that turbo was knackered.
I love working on Bentleys. Third one this week! Cha-ching! LOL!
Hey Wizard...... One of my all time favorite show was...... Car Talk with the Click and Clack, Tappet brothers. One of them died several years ago and the other one is still writing articles answering peoples car questions. I always looked forward to my Saturday morning listen to the brothers carry on with their callers and each other. Ask you learn the craft of making these videos, you could take the place of those guys by answering questions from callers. Long ago there was a story of a magician doing trips on the radio. People would call in because they didn’t see how the trick went. He always told a story that you could learn something in the process of his trick. I always laughed at the two brothers because they taught me so much about car maintenance. Thanks
Tell us why you love the Continental GT from the mechanical perspective. Maybe you and Tavarish could share opinions based on your recent experiences. Thanks!
Wrong bearded bald mechanic, mate!
My favorite line, “you should do that, but what if the customer says no?” Or in my shops case, what if the customer cannot afford it? It’s so easy to look and say, “oh you should fix it this way this and that” but sometimes you have to do things you don’t agree with.
I’ve always been nervous to buy an older car with a turbo for reasons like this. I know that sounds dumb but naturally aspirated engines are easier to diagnose most of the time.
Yes and no (coming from someone who's first car was an old 900 turbo).
There are definitely less components in an N/A engine, however turbo's tend to have reasonably unique symptoms so they don't add too much guesswork. Additionally, if you get a VW/Audi car from the mid 2000's and newer (which I know from owning an '07 currently), you have the ability to plug your phone into the car get as much live diagnostics as you could ever want. There's no guesswork when you can pull up live data of the thermostat gate open %, camshaft angles, fan speed, etc.
HarryTipperful all valid points. I keep looking at Cayenne Turbos from 2008 and up and feel nervous with 100k with no turbo issues.
@@andrewbryl the Porsche 957 turbo uses a Mitsubishi M601 which is much more robust than the Borg-Warner KO3 used in VWs and Audi's (among other brands).
They're surprisingly rock solid. The main issues rise from their plastic coolant pipes that typically get replaced with metal versions (at 100k+ this ha typically been done already) and drive shaft bearing failures.
Hoovies Garage has a few videos on his (if you're a fan of this channel, odds are that you're familiar with the Car Wizards most regular customer).
Still some turbodiesels run 500tkm with original turbo.
I have a large Ford E350 with 7.3L diesel.....328k miles on oringal turbo. I’m waiting for the day it dies.....ugh
The world needs more good people like the Wizard.
1k isn't that bad at all for the mani/tubo, considering it's Audi.
you mean vw :))
@@omysan vw doesn't mount this 2L lengthwise. This manifold/turbo assembly points straight at a left hand drives pedalbox, so it is audi specific.
@@nielsdebakker3283 The passat also uses a longitudinal configuration. So it's not Audi specific.
@@omysan while the 2.0t FSI shares the block and most components with their VW cousins, the Audi's (except the A3 and TT which had Haldex in that generation) have their engines mounted transverse to work with the Torsen Quattro. Because of that, the exhaust/turbo, engine mounts, and PCV are different.
@@HarryTipperful don't forget the Q3 also has the engine transverse as thats a Haldex system also.
Scotty kimler keeps talking about how honest he is. Like he's got something to prove. the car wizard is the most honest mechanic without trying.
I had a 2000 Chrysler Neon that showed 'check engine' and I looked up how to cure it and the book said loosen gas filler cap and retighten.Sure enough the light did not come on again.
Stephen Fox That works if that is the problem.
If that fixed it then the code was for the gas vapor recovery system. You dodged a bullet.

Thanks, Car Wizard. I appreciate your easy-going practical approach to things. 👍🙂
Your way of covering things seems to be just the right way to show your work and knowledge and I am sure your business will pick up because how people see your dedication to the repair done correctly not just what they can charge and do it easy ! You are true professional!!
Had this with a Golf Gti . Thankfully, still under warranty so VW picked up the bill which was £2200
Ouch, good thing for warranty
Surprised they covered that.
VW always seem to have something nasty up their sleeves that usually rears it's ugly head just after warranty runs out. Remember the 16v 2.0 diesel engines eating the oil pump drives?
@@SuperFIFTHGEAR why wouldn't they?

As a professional Technician myself, I appreciate these types of videos. keep it up wizard!
"it's in here because it's an Audi" - scotty.
Toyota-Scotty sucks.
It's so cool that your better half has retired from teaching and is now full-time at the shop.
I love it 🙂
Ultimate problem...Small engine. BIG vehicle!
I agree, turbos are fine if you just want some added power, but if the engine relies on it to produce just adequate power, well, best hope your turbo does not crap out.
exactly
Not really, modern turbo engines make peak torque down low and spool quickly. It's not like 30 years ago when a 4 cylinder couldn't handle a lot of power. Today we have V8s making 700hp when 300hp was a lot back then.
This isn't true. In europe there's plenty of 1.2 and 1.4 liter station wagons and SUVs with 150k+ miles and they're doing fine.
8:58 “Take it or leave it.” Dang! Wizard is SAVAGE! Lol
Q: What's wrong with this car?
A: It's an Audi.
Correct
The Turbo Charger failed, its a Borg Warner unit made by "an American worldwide automotive industry components and parts supplier". I guess Audi should be using a better supplier? Seriously though, it looks like a design fault, the manufacturer should be discounting at least.
Exactly it's junk
See this is why I can afford to own two 15 year old luxury cars at age 27. I'm doing these expensive kind of repairs, (timing belt, waterpump, turbo, raidator, electrical issues) maintenance and research myself and these things take time. Took me 5 months to get my Audi on the road.
That is why I will never buy a turbo equipped anything nor a CVT or DCT transmission.
Instant disqualifiers in my opinion.
@@EnnesX Then I guess it's used cars from now on, my friend
Your expertise is all good. I am in LTU and as far as i can tell as a mechanical engineer is that tyou do all things just as good, as you were a mechanic in Europe. The only difference is - is that you sometimes value your time - as a price too much for euro standarts. But you are in USA, it is what you do, i appriaciate that, good luck to you!
Ahhhhh the four ring circus!
Auto Union, 4 defunct car companies join hands
Yikes! I just did the first out of warranty repair on my Dad's 2012 Acura TL and for a Luxury Car that's the same year, same mileage it only needed an Upper Control arm, a battery, and new Spark Plugs. All the work I was able to do myself and it only costed roughly $300 Canadian for the whole job. Huge difference between Japanese and German Engineering, my dad would've been fuming if he had to deal with a repair like this especially with a fixed income.
10:10 We buy from China and they pay us back by dumping Covid-19 into our Country.

Great job! Thanks for learning and remembering all of the arcane facts and techniques which you were exposed to as a young mechanic., and continuing to learn when you got your own shop. Your town is a very small, rural town, north of Wichita, in a farming state, yet you service some of the most exotic cars in the country. I remember Wichita as America's largest small town - the last time I was in Wichita the tallest building was less than 10 stories high. Most mechanics would run from a Bentley or the turbocharger on an Audi Q5. Thanks for your videos - I have learned a lot.
