I'm 63 and this is 2020, and I still get excited just hearing about this film and still get the urge to want to see it for a few more times. Sadly, VHS tapes don't have a long lifespan and the players don't last more than 2 or 3 years becoz the head (even after cleaning) gets worn out rather easily (plus other mechanical malfunctions).
I hope I find a DVD enhanced copy.

I'm 60 and really enjoyed this film. I have wondered if they revisited it and changed the CGI to something more modern but left the actors alone because they did a pretty decent job. This interview says a lot about Lance Guest, What a nice guy, sincere. Should they do a sequel, he has to be in it as a parent or some kind of prominant role along with Catherine Mary Stewart.

One aspect of the movie I liked was the feel of community within the trailer park. Everyone knew and respected each other, almost like they were family. They looked out for one another and were supportive of Alex at the end. I think it was brilliant it was set away from the big city, bright stars in the sky and it gave a feeling of isolation. Obviously not a truly serious Sci-fi movie but one of the most enjoyable to watch. Alex and Maggie were a great match too.

People always use that term for actors who didn't become Meryl Streep or Tom Cruise mega stars. I was 21 when The Last Starfighter came out and saw it in the theater. She was lauded quite appropriately for her talent back in the day when it mattered to a performer. The fact that she has worked steadily since then confirms that she has been "rated" exactly right.

The Last Starfighter was great, because the world felt real. They built a little world out of that trailer park. They brought many characters to life there, and I can still remember perfectly, so many lines from all those characters. I swear, I could just hear one line from there, and know it's The Last Starfighter.
Then to have an Arcade that tested for possible Starfighters, and to find one of the best, in this random little park, was just very cool. It meant that even the smallest of places, could have something so very special happen. Which allowed anyone to dream of it happening to them.
Personally, I think the cgi was great in this movie. It's very unique, compared to any other movie. You have to remember, this movie came in 1984, when arcades were booming, and I can't think of another movie that had cgi this good.
I saw this movie in the theater, and have watched it so many times since then! :)

  • @tonygingrich8226
    @tonygingrich8226 5 лет назад +71

It's so strange to hear Lance describe it as an initial box office bomb. Perhaps it was. But The Last Starfighter is my earliest memory of ever seeing a movie. Not only is the first movie I can vividly recall seeing, but also my first movie theater experience. My parents took me to see it at a drive-in theater when I was 6. I don't recall much of the movie. But in 1984, and for a child who'd never before been to a big screen--the Death Blossom scene is what I remember clearly, and I was THERE with Alex in that ship!
Even though the Star Wars trilogy had all come and gone by 1984, Starfighter was my personal first. And I credit that movie for having driven me towards Star Wars and Star Trek...a chain reaction of events that I believe are largely responsible for my career as an IT nerd. It might not be too overboard to say that I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for this film.
With all its 80s cheese and simplicity, I still thoroughly enjoy it almost as much now as I did as a child. It takes me back to that drive-in, inside my parents' car, resting on my father's arm, and shooting the ever-living shit out of some aliens.

Tony, thanks for sharing your memories. I first saw the The Last Starfighter at my grandparent's house on VHS with my grandfather when I was about 8 or 9 in '84/'85, and I've loved it since then. There were so many great fantasy/sci-fi movies made in that period around the same-ish time that I still love: Tron, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, The Dark Crystal, D.A.R.Y.L, Willow, Short Circuit, Dragonslayer...
Watching The Last Starfighter movie now brings back memories of my childhood visits to see my grandparents, and I love the film in part because of that also.

I had just graduated from university when it came out, and as a big arcade and SF blockbuster fan and computer nerd at the time, I had to go see it. I wasn't disappointed, and I could appreciate the CGI at the time, I knew how much it took to make the effects as good as they were. I liked the story, as well.

    • @JasonNation72

You're right Tony, I thought Lance was being a bit modest about calling the movie a box office bomb. It actually made a profit although not by blockbuster standards ($14 million movie budget resulting in $29 million in box office). I'm just sad they never made a sequel to this movie. As far as I'm concerned, Xur is still on the run.

This is a little off the wall, but I was in a really bad marriage, very unhappy, and hoping so bad to find a woman who I could be happy with. When Maggie got up on the lift to go in the Gun Star to be with Alex, I would always cry. and of course my wife would say something shitty about me crying.
Other than that, there were so many great lines, #1 being Otis' "things change, always do. You'll get your chance, the thing is when it comes, you have to grab on with both hands and hold on tight!" So many things said in the movie became part of my vocabulary, and all the way until we divorced, I would introduce my wife as "my wife-oid". Of course, my son saw it when he was eight, and was instantly a Lewis Rogan fan, and to this day, uses all of Lewis' one liners in his day to day communication, especially "what the hell's going on?" Very influential movie in so many ways.

Right off the bat, I said I wasn't going to ask her about the show she was on, and it was - I think - a great relief to her. We just talked about normal people things. Watching Lance answer questions about something he did for a month back in the 80s makes me think about how you...the fan...would react if someone grilled you about a job you did for a month decades ago. I understand that this is a "fan" TV thing, but if given the chance, I'd love to just sit down and talk with Lance and Catherine and talk about anything but the movie. To find out about their lives and what they're doing now rather than fanboy out about an old job they did once.

6:05 "I realized that these kinda movies don't have to be crazy complicated action packed things, they can be simple stories about simple people with big dreams", what she said nailed it right on the head and the people working Hellaweird California seem to have forgotten that fact.

This is a hidden gem in the minds of those like myself that grew up in the 80's. Just a very cool and funny movie and watching this interview brought back special memories and put an interested smile on my face. Great to see your faces again and I wish you well. Beautiful.

TLS is one of those movies that, with the passage of time, cannot be improved, revisited or remade despite the (groundbreaking at the time) aged SFX. The rubbery alien suits, etc all give this some sort of untouchable charm that permanently compliments the 'good idea' that Mr. Guest stated as part of the films lasting success. He, and the rest of the cast, being no more or less integral than the Cray that made the effects happen. A perfect storm. Every budgetary constraint even played it's role, magically adding to it's enduring appeal. Others I think reflects this indelible characteristic is Robocop (the original) and the Firefly series.

I'm from the UK and I've been a massive fan of this film for years, Catherine is still a fine looking lady, & was most definitely the first crush of a lot of us.
The concept of the film is so good, it feels like it was crafted not just made to please the biggest audience like most films today.
Lance was definitely a guy that you could root for, an underdog with a heart of gold.
I hope that if something does happen with this property that its not given the 21st century woke treatment.

The Last Starfighter was and is still one of the best movies, I was wondering about the next movie hoping it will come out. And finding it here on RUclips makes me happy and do planning on watching the second one. (I also hope to see the 3rd one as well, if you movie makers plan on making it)

I saw both movies in the theater and I liked them but they were just your typical fun, lightweight sci-fi. What kept me interested was Catherine. She was beautiful, of course, but she had this way about her that made you feel like you have always known her. Starfighter was a better overall movie and after that I never saw her act again. In fact, this video is the first time I've seen her since the movies. Still just as beautiful and what a personality.

It may not have performed well in the theater but I did see it in a theater twice. Once just myself and later with my soon to be wife. We both love the movie. I bought it on VHS, DVD, and Blu Ray. It gets watched a few times each year. Night of the Comet, and Weekend at Bernie's are also favorites in our home. So many great movies from that time period and yes, they are all cult classics. Both Lance and Catherine Mary Stewart seem very nice. BTW, our daughter was named Catherine after her. We almost went with Maggie but Cat won out. Great video.

It fulfilled people's wishes - the fantasy of an everyday person transcending into something extraordinary. That's a HUGE reason why it was a hit. BUT, the execution - the craftsmanship - was masterful (endearing characters, acting, special effects, script, etc.) Part of the magical Golden Age that was 1980s entertainment...music, movies, video games. An awesome decade for that sort of art.

I have always loved this movie. My mom showed me it when l was young and when l got older l rewatched it. I recently showed it to my boyfriend and he loved it. His favorite part was the death blossom scene. He said it’s in the video game Overwatch. The character named Reaper has a special move that is the death blossom. I love that Grig is always happy. When l was young l thought his name was Greg.
