Will you do a test on it? From other videos already out, I can't see a difference, but would be curious if you'll repeat a similar test like you did w Action 4.
I've heard about the bit rate issue, and I'm glad there is a fix on the way from DJI. But it doesn't seem like a big deal to me, you really have to look hard to see a difference. Great video Jake, and thanks for sharing.
it's definitely a big deal. My action 5 pro looks kinda bad in anything with motion. RUclips doesn't show the differences that well because RUclips bitrate is bad itself
95% of people wont notice. Especially if you previously shot in h264. In fact, 60mbps hvec probably looks very close to 100mbps h264. You are even more unlikely to notice if you upload footage.. to … any online platform. I will gladly take the substantial space savings/improved battery performance any day. Looking online, the 5 seems to look better in virtually every situation. This is overly parroted.
For most people this does not matter, and in fact they benefit from it. But their mistake was not giving people that know what they’re doing an option (but that’s coming so that’s okay).
The important point to remember here is that bitrate is affected by the entire content of the frame. So these tests with trees in the bottom half of the frame may not have been sufficient to saturate the available bitrate to the point of noticeable difference, whereas mountain biking through a dense forest probably would. Bitrate is mostly visible in motion, making the image blocky or smudgy. Bitrate is literally the number of bits the compression algorithm is allowed to use per second to store changes since the last frame. The more of the frame that changes at once, the more the allowed bits are spread across the entire image. In big cinema cameras, the bitrate is high enough that all changes can be recorded accurately, but at Action 5-level bitrates, the compression algorithm may have to start recording only very approximate changes to avoid using more bits than it is allowed, and this is where you start seeing the blockiness.
What I'm seeing here, and in other videos doing the same thing, is not necessarily anything at all to do with bitrate. The two cameras use totally different sensors, and their picture profiles will be tuned differently, even if you've put them on the same settings. 'Sharpness' is not the same as detail. Now, it might be that the Action 5 Pro is tuned such that it uses less digital edge enhancement for the same 'sharpness' setting. It might also be down to the way that the higher resolution sensor on the Action 5 is downsampled to 4K. There are way more factors at work here. What we're talking about is a difference of 20Mbps. With HEVC, 100Mbps is still roughly equivalent to 200Mbps in Mpeg 4. What I'm seeing in your images is not indicative of a lower bitrate causing the problems. Lower bitrates cause macro blocking issues, not 'softness' on its own. In fact, looking at the Action 4 footage, it looks to me that the 'sharpness' you are referring to is most definitely due to a more overt application of digital edge enhancement in camera, even if you have this set to 'low'. What I am seeing is indicative of a different sensor and different processing, along with differences in the way digital edge enhancement etc is applied. Correlation is not causation, and it's getting a bit tiresome to see RUclipsrs immediately jump to saying the differences must be down to the bitrate. Nothing here suggests that at all. They're two different cameras with two entirely different image processing pipelines.
@@IsaacFullerton-q8u Most of these things can be tuned with firmware. Though most of what I'm seeing isn't necessarily 'worse' than the OA4, just very slightly different.

The only ones that can do this are GoPro, although they have been torn to pieces in recent years by all the paid influencers. While at first glance the video image quality just looks a little soft if you look just a little closer it’s actually pretty BAD. For years I’ve been taking frame grabs from my GoPros and this past year from my Insta360 Ace Pro for very good photos. This is a deal breaker for me with my new Action 5 Pro. Frame grabs are garbage photos from my Action 5 Pro! Try this yourself. Take a short 4K video clip with default settings with your GoPro, Action 4, or Insta360 Ace Pro then grab a frame to photo. Hi Jake, on my Sony cameras (A7C and FDR-X3000) i can choose bitrate: 60M and 100M. I made some tests: assuming that 100M file has a quality of 100%, 60M file has a quality of 98-99%. They are almost the same, except some very minor difference on highlight, so i decided to use 60M and no one noticed. On Action 5 i think there is some sharpness setting that DJI has to update.
Hi Jake, luv what you're doing. You are truly blessed with an amazing environment to work with. Can you please do another video with your drone comparing OA4 again OA5 now that DJI have added high bitrate option to the OA5. Many thanks.
Appreciate this, Jake! Quick, to the point, and beautiful as always. I actually got an Action 5 Pro just this week for a trip to Hokkaido next week (replacing a GoPro 10 I lost earlier this year). While I am thankful DJI will be providing the high bitrate option, in the end we're mostly talking about pixel peeping. The output is obviously very high quality as it stands, and I'm looking forward to using it on my upcoming trip. Incidentally, I see people complain about shilling and such, and I get that it does happen, but I feel like you're always fair and reasonable even when provided with products. Thanks for your content and hard work!
It clearly was a mistake not to give ‘Pro’ users higher bitrate and sacrifice battery life instead… it makes no sense to me when your trying to sell an adventure pack when there is no need for 3 batteries when 1 will do for 95% of most user shoots… give me much higher bitrate and 1.5-2 hours of battery life and I will buy the adventure pack until then not buying the Action5…
Thanks for your videos on the Action 5 Pro. I just sold my old GoPro 7 and looking to get the DJI Action as a replacement. Event if Bit rate is bad, it will be an improvement coming from a GoPro 7 :) Please do more posts on the Action 5 Pro ! thanks
I would never notice if you dont stop the video and point it out (pixel peeping) even without the update, I feel the other advantages makes the 5 pro the way to go (I think I will be buying The action 5 within the comming week)
Thankfully this can easily be solved by firmware update. They should also include a 6K resolution mode just to beat GoPro's 5.3K. DJI 5 has a marginally less than 8K resolution, so they can easily pull a 6K or 6.5K if they wanted at 60fps. Most people don't need it but in the comparisons it would make a difference to showcase.
@@JakeSloan Sure, just like it does in GoPro to do 5,3K. It wouldn't offer 120fps obviously, but for those who want 30fps it could be an otion. I still would use the 4K HDR because it is more convenient as a resolution and you get the most juice out of the quality but having options is better just for the comparisons. Like Ace Pro which has 8K and in side-by-side comparisons their 8K looks obviously much more detailed than DJI or GoPro footage.
Hi Jake. I've been following all of this universe of the actions cameras from some years but above all, this year I am very interested. I want to buy a new one, that works very well with low light scenarios and have more or less al the latest features. DJI OSMO Action 5 Pro was near to achieve that. But after looking compariosn between that and GoPro 13 I saw this issue. If you compare them you will see much more difference than comparing with OSMO Action 4. So, let's hope this new update will provide same or higher bit rate than the GoPro (I think is even higher than Osmo 4) to check if the difference of detail is only about bit rate. I have to tell you that you are suggesting the difference is with high speed videos. But if you check comparisons without move between GoPro and DJI you will see there is the difference also.
There is some difference in all situations for sure, but it is most noticeable when the video is having to reproduce lots of small detail very fast so that's why I did the comparison this way
The H265 codec ist not made for the best quality but a low data rate and I think that ist what they wanted to improve. As a professional cameraman I don't use this codec anyway.
Do you experience more jello in your footage when using a DJI Action cam with a magnetic mount vs a GoPro with their attached mounting brackets? Had some jello with my action 4 and switched to the GoPro Hero 12, but now I want to get back to DJI with the release of the action 5 pro :)
IMHO is it really a problem with Bitrate, people want more from the camera and that is the problem I personally see, they seemed to taken the steps in their right direction and people expected higher bitrate
*Not gonna Lie, High Bit rate isn't that much of a concern to me as I probably never will notice it, as I'm still getting the Action 5 but that's Nice to know*
A very awesome comprehensive comparison. You huligjted aeeas where it may be of issue and the possibility of the issue being fixed. Thankyou very much for your work
Bit rate isn’t always the best and end all in terms of video quality it needs the processor, memory and optics to go with it. But either way DJI already announced bit rate upgrade / patch in the next firmware update so chillax 👍❤️🇬🇧
They just did the firmware update you can now adjust bit rate, it seems as though night mode is not as stable as before the firmware update maybe it’s just my imagination.
So they are going to update with a high bit rate option so the 5 Pro can match the 4 in video quality. So unless you need a longer lasting battery(4 was decent), slightly better diving capabilities(i don't dive and it's just 2m difference), some built in internal storage(i have never forgot to put in a sd card)...just get a 4. Let's hope they make the super night mode better with the update because the footage with that is very disappointing too. It's unlike DJI to release something like this- first time ive been disappointed with one of their products.
Ι was watching this video on a 65” TV. Honestly, there was no difference in my viewing experience. I have an Action 3 which has a larger sensor and is 10 bit and 130 Mbits/sec bit rate. Action 3 is fine for me. I don’t take photos with the Action 3.
My goodness, you live in a pretty place! Haha. Honestly I couldn't really see the difference "at speed" except maybe in the last trees on the island example. Once you showed the freeze-frames it is pretty clear but I guess that's not how video is viewed unless you're editing... From your other videos it seems like the footage from the OA5 is very good.
DJI might want to add some non TikTokers to their beta test crew. Why not add some code to allow user to test the inserted memory card to find maximum sustainable write bit rate and then allow that as an option? Also spend the extra $1.29 and add a true UHSii slot.
@@JakeSloan Thank you sooooo much for your reply. Things that luring me towards Action 5 are: 1. Huge low light improvements. 2. inbuilt storage 3. 2x battery. 4. 2 Mics connectivity. Aren’t these features making AC 5pro future proof for atleast 2-3 years?
Our Sd cards write speed is 130 we don't have much room for higher bitrate. Most consumers SD cards are 130 mb/s. I don't understand how some are calling for 180 mb/s should we connect SSD then ?!!!
You are confusing Megabytes with Mbit. Most SD Cards for these cameras can write at 30-40 MBps sustained, which allows you to write 250 Mbps bitrate video without a problem. At 400 Mbps files, then you may have a problem with “normal” cards.
Has DJI officially said anything about that yet other then that post from someone? I'm guessing just a software update that needs to be done, after enough of these type of comparison's come out
@@JuiceBiker now I have a insta 360 Ace Pro and they delivered from start what they promised and it’s working very well. DJI seems one of those companies that release a lot of models like donuts but never take too much time optimizing each model (like GoPro). Instead, what exists to optimize is an excuse to release a new model.
Both of them have heavy artifacting. I guess that's to be expected when you're trying to cram so much into such a tiny body. Both are still amazing cameras.
If you were going to be shooting outside and you could get the Action 4 for $180 instead of the Action 5 for $350, would you do so if the action camera wasn't being used for quick movement? I have the Action 2 and I think that the 4 and 5 would be a big upgrade, agreed? Thanks Jake.
I think you’d be VERY happy with the action 4 if you want to save some money. The image quality is fantastic and stabilization is basically the same as the action 5
DJI slapping the "PRO" name on this camera is a joke. Go to the DJI forum where real users are and you will see the bad quality video this thing puts out. These RUclips people who got the camera for free have to get their videos signed off by DJI. Anyone else telling you different is lying to you.
Exactly! GoPro has been torn to pieces on RUclips and other sites over the last few weeks. And why? Because they delivered a camera that once again produced better footage than the competition. And comparisons were only made where the Action5's faults were not visible. But it's damn sad that GoPro, with a smaller sensor, delivers better footage than the competition 🤣🤣
I’ve just watched a video that makes what you said ridiculous and the fact you said it after watching it beggars belief. I think Jake answered the question posed convincingly and it has been reported on dji forum that an increase of bit rate will be introduced mid October .

I have already taken snapshot of that same coment which you mentioned here... That is the only comment which is there. It is not only for fast moving effecting this low but rate. I keep saying this, DJI didn't design the Action 5 Pro for FPV. As far as DJI is concerned, if you use the O3 Air Unit (and upcoming O4) you don't need a second camera. If you're looking for a good FPV camera, get the Action 2, GoPro Mini, Insta 360 Go3, or one of the naked cameras. Every action camera isn't made with FPV in mind.

On Action 5 i think there is some sharpness setting that DJI has to update.
agreed
Going through trees on a mtb high speed is a big problem!!!
💀👏🏼
yep
yep, same problem here.
Hi Jake, luv what you're doing. You are truly blessed with an amazing environment to work with. Can you please do another video
with your drone comparing OA4 again OA5 now that DJI have added high bitrate option to the OA5. Many thanks.
I am working on that!
NICE!!!
Great video, love the locations, best regards from Mexico.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the comparison. Please upload the original camera files so we can compare.
I don't do that anymore but thanks!
It clearly was a mistake not to give ‘Pro’ users higher bitrate and sacrifice battery life instead… it makes no sense to me when your trying to sell an adventure pack when there is no need for 3 batteries when 1 will do for 95% of most user shoots… give me much higher bitrate and 1.5-2 hours of battery life and I will buy the adventure pack until then not buying the Action5…
agreed
Thanks for your videos on the Action 5 Pro. I just sold my old GoPro 7 and looking to get the DJI Action as a replacement. Event if Bit rate is bad, it will be an improvement coming from a GoPro 7 :)
Please do more posts on the Action 5 Pro ! thanks
agreed!
Id like to See a comparsion 5 Standard Bitrate vs 5 high Bitrate
Is there a difference?
I am working on that now
I would never notice if you dont stop the video and point it out (pixel peeping)
even without the update, I feel the other advantages makes the 5 pro the way to go (I think I will be buying The action 5 within the comming week)
nice!
That’s great news! Thanks for the info! Would have been a deal breaker for me, let’s hope they fix it very soon with the next update!
I hope so
Thankfully this can easily be solved by firmware update. They should also include a 6K resolution mode just to beat GoPro's 5.3K. DJI 5 has a marginally less than 8K resolution, so they can easily pull a 6K or 6.5K if they wanted at 60fps.
Most people don't need it but in the comparisons it would make a difference to showcase.
agreed but I think 6k would require a lot more sensor and processing powers
@@JakeSloan Sure, just like it does in GoPro to do 5,3K. It wouldn't offer 120fps obviously, but for those who want 30fps it could be an otion.
I still would use the 4K HDR because it is more convenient as a resolution and you get the most juice out of the quality but having options is better just for the comparisons.
Like Ace Pro which has 8K and in side-by-side comparisons their 8K looks obviously much more detailed than DJI or GoPro footage.
I really need to get a big 7” long range fpv to cruise around with.. that’s perfect for what you do and where you are Jake
100% ever since I built this one I have barely flown anything else lol
There is some difference in all situations for sure, but it is most noticeable when the video is having to reproduce lots of small detail very fast so that's why I did the comparison this way
I'm confuse. Please suggest me one cam between this two, my purpose is motovlogging. And this will be my first cam.
Either one of these will work well, but I would use the action five and a DJI mic 2. That will work out fantastic for motovlogging.
I heard that the low bitrate was done for better battery life and reduce the change of overheating.
And to keep file sizes smaller for offloading
The H265 codec ist not made for the best quality but a low data rate and I think that ist what they wanted to improve. As a professional cameraman I don't use this codec anyway.
yep
At the same file sizes, h265 should be better quality than h264
@@clonkex
That's right, but usually they try to lower the Data rate instead of getting better quality with the same Data rate...
and could we assume if they update the bitrate to be better the battery life will get worst?
If you use the higher bit rate then likely you will see a small drop in battery life
Did you label the sides backwards?
Yes he did lol
lol
Thank you for the review. I found it very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Really useful investigation and testing. Thank you very much!
you're welcome
Do you experience more jello in your footage when using a DJI Action cam with a magnetic mount vs a GoPro with their attached mounting brackets? Had some jello with my action 4 and switched to the GoPro Hero 12, but now I want to get back to DJI with the release of the action 5 pro :)
I have not as long as I make sure it is securely attached to the mount
IMHO is it really a problem with Bitrate, people want more from the camera and that is the problem I personally see, they seemed to taken the steps in their right direction and people expected higher bitrate
I agree, but it will be nice for them to give people the option to use a higher bit rate when they want to
@@JakeSloan like gopro standard and high its basically good the way it is and people are wanting more then what its to be
do you still have the both cameras? Do the same filters/lens cover fit to both cameras?
yes
Hi Jake, maybe you can make a new video now since they have released a new firmware update regarding the bit rate issue.
I will as soon as I get the chance
thank you for your time for an accurate assessment.
you're welcome
A firmware update mid October will be giving us higher bit rates. Thank goodness for that!
Agreed
It looks like the Action 4 just have more digital sharpening applied internally really. Not a problem for real use.
well I did match the settings exactly but it's possible
Why can’t you fly both camera at the same time?
I didn't have a way of attaching both securely to the drone
*Not gonna Lie, High Bit rate isn't that much of a concern to me as I probably never will notice it, as I'm still getting the Action 5 but that's Nice to know*
great to know and yeah if you aren't moving fast with lots of detail you won't even notice
Night footage looks like oil painting. Not sure how you are saying it's good. It's like 720p shot with 50 dollars camera
I say it's good in low light for an action camera. You have to have realistic expectations
@@BlackapinoTheTechGuy insta ace pro is able to pull it off with night mode.
A very awesome comprehensive comparison.
You huligjted aeeas where it may be of issue and the possibility of the issue being fixed.
Thankyou very much for your work
You’re welcome
4k60 is 80mbs in Action 5. Why not compare 4k120 which is 110mbs?
Because almost nobody would use 4k 120 for real world stuff except maybe slow motion. 4k 60 or 4k 30 is much more widely used
@@JakeSloan but you made the comparison from a quad. All you would use is 4k120 in that scenario.
Bit rate isn’t always the best and end all in terms of video quality it needs the processor, memory and optics to go with it. But either way DJI already announced bit rate upgrade / patch in the next firmware update so chillax 👍❤️🇬🇧
you didn't watch the whole video did you? 😂 I talk about the update
Great video!
Thanks!
They just did the firmware update you can now adjust bit rate, it seems as though night mode is not as stable as before the firmware update maybe it’s just my imagination.
interesting
Comparison after comparison, even with the bit rate option update, proves the Action 4 has better image quality.
I don’t know after the update. I’ll be comparing them soon
Interesting.
Ι was watching this video on a 65” TV. Honestly, there was no difference in my viewing experience. I have an Action 3 which has a larger sensor and is 10 bit and 130 Mbits/sec bit rate. Action 3 is fine for me. I don’t take photos with the Action 3.
Then you are definitely set!
can you update with the bitrate update please
there has been no update yet
Hi mr Jake. Can you sellect to use 8bit. ? From Cape Town. South Africa.
you can! in normal color profile
I just got this camera and the shake while walking is terrible! I can find a single video addressing it.
Wow I haven’t had any issues. Is your stabilization turned on? Otherwise you may have a defective camera
@@JakeSloan maybe my settings... when trying to walking tours with it.. its bad.
Exactly!
DJI might want to add some non TikTokers to their beta test crew. Why not add some code to allow user to test the inserted memory card to find maximum sustainable write bit rate and then allow that as an option? Also spend the extra $1.29 and add a true UHSii slot.
Lol well I’m definitely not a TikToker but yes, it would be nice
Update is online
Yes it is
Thanks Jake !
You’re welcome
Someone suggest me,one of these. Action 4 adv. combo or action 5(no combo). Both are on same price in my country for this sale.
out of those 2 I would get the action 4 adventure combo
@@JakeSloan Thank you sooooo much for your reply.
Things that luring me towards Action 5 are:
1. Huge low light improvements.
2. inbuilt storage
3. 2x battery.
4. 2 Mics connectivity.
Aren’t these features making AC 5pro future proof for atleast 2-3 years?
at least give us a choice of high bitrate
agreed
Our Sd cards write speed is 130 we don't have much room for higher bitrate. Most consumers SD cards are 130 mb/s. I don't understand how some are calling for 180 mb/s should we connect SSD then ?!!!
You are confusing Megabytes with Mbit. Most SD Cards for these cameras can write at 30-40 MBps sustained, which allows you to write 250 Mbps bitrate video without a problem. At 400 Mbps files, then you may have a problem with “normal” cards.
@@ricarmig thank you dear for the clarification 😅
I see this was answered already!
No AV1 Codec in a "pro" 2024 cam?
nope
Matters when you start grading, 100 plus should be the minimum.
True
Has DJI officially said anything about that yet other then that post from someone? I'm guessing just a software update that needs to be done, after enough of these type of comparison's come out
Watch to the firmware update section
Not necessarily. My pocket 2 was “praised” to have several issues (just software wise) and they were never fixed. After two years of waiting I sold it
@@ricarmig Thats the Point....
Companies always promise a lot, but usually they don't keep much of it.
Where can I find the HEVC setting in the A5? Nice video, thank you.
The action 5 only shoots in HEVC (h265) codec. The action 3&4 allowed h264 or hevc selection
Thank you, thought I was going crazy when I couldn't find it.
@@JakeSloan A big problem for my old computer.
i see I BIG issue, not just an issue, then why they called PRO?
Because “pro” is better than non pro? 😂
Both of them have heavy artifacting. I guess that's to be expected when you're trying to cram so much into such a tiny body. Both are still amazing cameras.
true
Hey dude i fly fpv in alaska, lets go fly sometime! I just ordered an action 5 cause of youre great vids.
sounds like fun!!
@@JakeSloan thanks for the answer sir.
But it's damn sad that GoPro, with a smaller sensor, delivers better footage than the competition 🤣🤣
this video wasn't signed off on by DJI and neither was my comparison video
I’ve just watched a video that makes what you said ridiculous and the fact you said it after watching it beggars belief. I think Jake answered the question posed convincingly and it has been reported on dji forum that an increase of bit rate will be introduced mid October .
You Tube is one big add. Gake views from troll farms. Corporate entities with a dozen actors pumping out garbage and You Tube seems to love them. I'm about done with You Tube.

they are set to the exact same settings...
I have already taken snapshot of that same coment which you mentioned here... That is the only comment which is there. It is not only for fast moving effecting this low but rate. Even details are lost if we keep camera static or very small movement. Loosing a quality for faster transfer and low file size... Bad move. We are living in 2024. One side they have updated and other side downgraded same camera... Just daily checking for Bitrate update 😂

@@JakeSloan I got the 13Black, but haven't even flown it once, so much more excited about the mini 13 (Hero 2024) for Freestyle. I'll use the 13 Black for gig work, but I'm gonna use the mini 13 every day (and it's only 46mbps 4k/30)
I am disappointed with Action 5! I bought it a month ago because I wanted to combine my Mini 4 Pro (sometimes Neo) footage with Action footage from ground. Usually I record in 4K 30fps D-Log M. oh really??
I keep saying this, DJI didn't design the Action 5 Pro for FPV. As far as DJI is concerned, if you use the O3 Air Unit (and upcoming O4) you don't need a second camera. If you're looking for a good FPV camera, get the Action 2, GoPro Mini, Insta 360 Go3, or one of the naked cameras. Every action camera isn't made with FPV in mind.
