- A new updated version of this video: • EVERY Godox Trigger VS...
Godox now has four different flash triggers/transmitters available for their X series (or R2 series for Flashpoint/Adorama) lighting system. But which one is best? Or is there even a best? We're going to take a super deep dive into the X1T vs X2T vs XPro vs XPro2 (also known as the R2, R2 markII, R2 Pro, and R2 Pro markII) to see how they measure up, from inside out, to see which one might be right for you! And be warned: we're going in Really deep here.
If you feel like picking one of these up, feel free to use one of my affiliate links to help support this channel, and feed my fat cats. Also, BE SURE TO BUY THE RIGHT VERSION FOR YOUR CAMERA! There are separate editions of each for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, etc, denoted by the letter after the product name. Such as X1T-s for Sony or X1T-c for Canon.

There’s a new, more up to date version of this video out now: ruclips.net/video/VQQgyuyfcCU/видео.html
This was UNBELIEVABLY helpful! Thank you for putting in the time and making such a great video.
That was an incredibly in-depth run down of all of those triggers. Appreciate the work you put into this
You, sir, are a huge nerd, and the photography community owes you a great debt. Thank you.
By far the deepest in depth and knowledgeable review ever and it was not boring or drawn out. I’m subscribing solely off the fact your knowledgeable and entertaining. Thank you!
Thanks Wes, questions which I don't believe anyone else has answered, but that needed answering. Much appreciated.
Thank you for 1) making such a detailed video 2) going outside in the cold for us 3) your kind and easygoing personality.
Until your video, I had a hard time knowing what the xp pro ii offered vs the xp pro i.
Really enjoyed the video. Thank you
Take care.
Excellent video and great work. The XPro2 came out days after I got my XPro but now even happier with the XPro thanks to all your findings.
Such a great deep dive! You have surpassed anything Godox has released. Thank you!
Probably the most detailed technical flash/trigger review I have ever seen! Outstanding!
Probably too much, but thanks ;) haha
I am quite pleased with a few X2T transmitters. Never had any issues with them.
Best review I’ve ever seen of a product in RUclips, this was really useful! Thanks Wes!
Thanks! I definitely may have tried Too hard this time around. Lol
Damn man, your videos are on point.... so much info in everyone!! Thanks for the videos you produce!!
I hope you and your channel are doing all right. I haven't watched your videos before. But I really liked how in depth you went with the power consumption analysis. And I hit you with the follow, mostly because I see that you're a dad and working hard!
Wow! Since I own 3 out of the 4 Godox triggers I was fascinated by your detailed adventure ( out in the snow ). You got my real attention when you started discussing the batteries, signal interference and using the scan function. These were areas I never gave much thought to, thank you ! You also get a high five on the nerdiness, almost as nerdy as Gerald Undone .
ALMOST??
Sigh...Back to work... 😂
@@WesPerry haha
After watching 3 videos. I've subscribed! Thanks for the teaching!
Thank you so much for this! I have decided to go off camera flash (mostly for macro) and I'm very new to this world so your video helped a lot!
Great video Wes. I always enjoy your unbiased, real world reviews. It is nice to get such quality videos and not feel like someone is trying to subtly sell me something. Keep it up! :)
I’m a truly terrible salesman. “You don’t need the expensive one!” 😂
That thing with ID was driving me crazy, but when u mentioned that, the lightbulb goes on !!!Thank you!
Outstandingly valuable review and more than the usual data, thank you!
What a detailed review!! Thanks for making this video!!
super informative video with soo much info! great job, loved it!
Working on a new updated video now and whew
I need to scale back the amount of info haha
Great video Wes! Helped me buy the x2t trigger, which has double tap enable/disable group buttons 👌!
Thanks for the excellent video. I ordered X2T-s.
Wes I just found your channel after I looked up use for the glow ez lock system, but your info on the godox as well as the info on the glow system has been great!
I just recently switched from using my godox 860 ii on the camera and as the trigger for my ad200pro to using the r2 pro 2. I have been super happy. I do wish the trigger had the side buttons for ease of use but it’s not bad. I use a different brand shutter trigger that I have clipped to my stand and it works great. Also super cheap.
One thing I love with the godox/flashpoint triggers is I have a couple r2 single pin triggers and I use some of my old flashes with these for color or highlights in studio shoots where I didn’t need to worry about the power just getting the splash (usually I have the set low ahead of time) but very handy while I build up my godox line of flashes
I should mention I have been shooting REP for 3 years and working to get into portrait, headshot, and other forms of photography. Do you shoot hdr, flash, flambient, or a mix for your REP
Wes, thank you. This is exactly the video I was looking for as I add a new controller for my new Nikon I am adding to my Canon, Sony, Fuji flashes.
Great comparison! Thanks for putting in the effort :)
Congratulations for a very good review/comparison!
Working on a new one which includes the New XPro II now ;)
Very thorough and well presented video. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic analysis. Thanks!
Very comprehensive, excellent video
WOW, the quality of this content is absolutely outstanding. The extensive and replicated quantitative testing, the clear explanation of your findings, the understanding that different users will have different needs and want different triggers... I can tell straightaway that you know your shit and care more about quality than viewbaiting. I came upon your video while doing research to upgrade my trigger game... 100% buying through your affiliate link.
Thanks!
Best (most complete) review of all these triggers I've seen. 👍🏼
It’s not complete anymore! Still working on an updated one with the new XProii
@@WesPerry I can only afford the past! 😅
That’s valid. Doubling the price on the new one without adding much in the way of tangible features was quite the choice on their part.
Valuable and useful info... Thanks.. Pro & X2T + multiple flashes
Thank you! Great work 👏
Order placed X2T. From your link as a thank you 😊.
I used to use pocket wizards with quantum flashes & they were the simplest devices. Now I use the x1pro w godox flashes, which took some practice. When I need to make super-quick changes at weddings I can’t be fumbling around. Therefore the x2pro would drive me insane! Great video!
But the quick channel on/off is great on the Pro2…I just have to look to find the buttons every time 😂
Thanks for this! I struggled to work out the differences
It’s a little weird that it’s not just a straight upgrade curve, and that none of them have exactly been replaced or discontinued.
@@WesPerry Thanks for all your videos learnt a lot from them!
HUge thanks for this quality video, really simplifies choosing the right one ( the x2t :D )
Glad I could help! I’m not sure if “simplify” is really the best word for this video, though 😂
Looks like a couple of my triggers weren't totally up to date with firmware during the making of this video. Here is a chart with the latest information. Let me know if you have any more features or changes to make to it! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lG3XytAAMJCAUAbfXs3UEZOwPwnQ0EtFv3bY83FXMAw/edit
I have the X1T, X2T, and now the Pro MKII. I don't have the original pro but I think it suffers the same problem the X2T has. You have look at the trigger, select, say the A button, then move your finger a long way to reach the dial. With the Pro MKII, my thumb naturally finds the center select button and from there it is an easy move to the A button without looking. I think over time it will be even more intuitive and muscle memory will be easy. One feature that returned Hi-Sync or flash delay. I wish you would talk more about this.
Some of your videos are too long for most viewers. I like your long reviews, but if you are interested in subscriptions and growth, you have to create something more people will want to see. You could produce an additional video for each review and limit the duration of that. Ideally you should limit duration of the main video instead. Extensive reviews and tutorials are not very competitive on youtube. Then, there is the psychology issue. Viewers do not really want to hear about the drawbacks of products they want to buy, especially if these appear to be minor. What is more important, they dont want to hear about the drawbacks of products they have already bought. For commercial success in youtube, you have to be very positive in the approach of the product if it is not comically flawed. Basically, you are selling a personality, not information. Information that is useful to a professional or a.technically minded viewer, can be a turn off on the personality front for the majority of viewers.
Yeah that’s a big ol’ no for me. 😂
I have no desire to build a name for myself based on shallow, meaningless content. Even if it means much slower progress.
I’ll do pithy stuff from time to time, but the basis has to remain rigorous.
I own 2 xT2 s and 4 ad200 flashes. I have found for some reason channels d and e will not do ttl. A, b and c all can do ttl. Anyone else see this or am I missing something?
Odd. Is the firmware up to date?
You were right this is some real nerdy chit. You really put in the work.
Super! Great! Wonderful! Unbelievable! Stunning video! Liked, subscribed!
Hi Wes, love your work! I wanted to know if you can confirm if the X2T trigger has fixed the white balance issue the XPro trigger suffers from, or as it's a different range to the XPro, it's irrelevant? If you're unsure what I mean the XPro with my Nikon D750 and AD200 Pro (I'm in Australia so have no access to Adorama) will produce overly warm photos, workarounds I have tried don't work so was looking at getting rid of the XPro and getting an X2T. Just wanted to find out what you knew. Cheers!
Thanks for your content bud :)
Hi Wes. Thank you for this detailed review ! Actually I'm thinking to get one :) A X1T would be a perfect choice for my usage but it lacks zoom control. In the table you mentioned that X2T has "limited" zoom control. Could you tell more about these limitations please. By the way I still have two Yongnuo flashes with a wireless remote trigger. Looks like with X1T or X2T I can mix both systems together.
Thanks Wes. As always, your videos are extremely helpful! Re AF Assist - So do your Sony camera focus in low light situations without AF assist? The old A mount bodies worked well in such situations with the infrared beam from a dedicated flash. Without AF assist aren't you snookered in low light settings? What am I missing?
The older Sony mirrorless camera struggled in low light, but the current generation doesn’t have much of an issue. I’ve done candlelight shoots at iso 51,000 that worked fine (lens selection has a big impact, though).
Excellent content and I thought your execution was fantastic. I only use the R2 Pro Mark II (R2 Pro II), because of laziness. I also have the R2 Mark II (X2T). I have the X2T for two reasons: (1) to share my units when shooting with a fellow photographer, and (2) the form factor. You mentioned how the form factor helps in navigating tight spaces but there is another where it comes in handy. Using a flash bracket. Because of the cold-shoe to extend the flash away from the camera lens' axis, you need either a sync cord or a transmitter of some sort. The low form factor of the X2T works perfectly. Naturally, after I've gotten the X2T, I've not needed the flash bracket and have not taken the time to learn the X2T. Maybe this video will inspire me.
Looking forward to the charger video.
Great point!
Thanks for the video 🙂
Thanks for an informative video, Wes. I shoot the Xpro using Alkaline batteries. (I used to get misfires often enough with NiMH batteries to be an annoyance.)
Is it because the NiMH are 1.2v while Alkalyne are 1.5v? I think it could explain the misfire or weird behavior I was sometime having on my X2T! :o
"We're gonna get nerdy here" is when I liked and subscribed!
Good man. Lol
Great video as always, thanks for the work you put in here.
thank you so much for this video. im currently using v860ii for my canon and dont know what trigger to use it with. thank you for this video. new sub here!
Thanks for this very complete comparison! I have a question.
I bought an XPro-P to put on my Pentax bodies to fire a brand new AD100Pro mini strobe. I am used to Paul Buff triggers and strobes and while they are strictly single center pin gear, the shutter-to-flash times are near instantaneous.
But with the Godox kit there's easily a 100 to 200 millisecond delay or lag from clicking the shutter to the flash firing. By experimenting I determined that the bulk of that delay is in the XPro-P itself since I can sense the shutter-button to actual-shutter lag with the flash not even on or being fired. Simply turning the XPro trigger on causes the shutter to start lagging immediately.
I am using a single group, A, the flash is set to M, no ID, no HSS, no fancies at all. I plan to next try reducing this to a single pin flash by taping the pins to see what effect that has. I hear that that workaround "fixes" the delay.
I also hear through the grapevine that the X2T has had a firmware update to eliminate or reduce this delay. But that firmware has not migrated backward to the XPro-P.
So my question is: did you try measuring the camera trigger to remote flash trigger times at all?
I’m afraid I haven’t looked into this issue at all. Mostly because I don’t feel that I have the proper equipment to precisely measure said delay.
Great information
Great vid 👌
Thanks!
Thanks Wes for the tour inside the system, i enjoyed it a lot !
i had to send back my X Pro (F) because of too many flash failure : 1 out of 4 photo wasn't flashing .
Now with the X2t it's much better almost perfect ! I should scan every time before a shoot . I thought that it is not necessary because I put an ID, but I will rather do a scan from now on .
I'm using the APP mode because I got a Sekonic L858D with the RT-GX module. Every moves are made by the Sekonic .
I hope Godox can make a small trigger configured for the "APP" use case with a battery owner .
Well, ID could help if there are other people around using Godox flashes, but yeah, scanning isn’t for that circumstance so much as it is for avoiding general witless interference.
Thanks for the informative vid. What remote trigger do you use as mentioned earlier in the video. As you stated was the most reliable for not touching the camera.
Oh, it’s this one:
amzn.to/3tVsEFS
@@WesPerry amazing! thank you. Maybe you can do a vid of remotes as well. I had that brand and it failed so now I'm trying: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078GDBK5D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've had one fail as well, but that's because I dropped it, so...I don't want to play the blame game there. haha
Great Video! one question though, isn't one of the conveniences of a hot shoe on top of your trigger being able to combine an on-camera flash with multiple slaved flash units?
Well, possibly
But just using a V1 or V860iv will give you control of multiple flash units and on camera at the same time.
Some use it for controlling other Brands of flashes, or just somewhere to mount a camera trigger or monitor.
Basically just gives you more flexibility.
I would have defnitely used ur affiliate links if I live in US or CA because of the sheer amount of effort u have put in to make this video. Appriciate what u have done
Thanks! Speaking of effort, I’ve considered branching out to other countries for affiliate links, but man is it a lot of work to make them for different countries!
@@WesPerry choose a few countries with huge markets. Im from India, its a huge country with full of wedding photographers using/moving to godox stuff after godox revolution. Earlier many used to depend on elenchrome wired strobes who value strobe light quality. And many other are jst using diffused continuous lights + ISO.
With godox portability, HSS, quality n affordability its changing trends here from past 2 years and many are yet to move to godox. Im sure most of them will be watching ur videos.
I just choose the countries where my viewership is the largest. Usually it’s about 50% USA, then Canada (where I am), UK, and India exchanging 2,3,4 places after that. I just do Canada because it by far the simplest of the bunch for me, and USA of course because most of my viewers are there.
Will the r2 pro from flashpoint work with a godox sk300 with rtx16 and allow for power control, sound and model light control? If I get an answer Im subscribing for sure! Thank you!
Top content Wes! I used the Xpro with the A7iii but they don’t seem to play as well with the A9ii (no clue why I think it’s the hotshoe connection) I’ve just ordered 2 X2T solely for the quick lock and metal hotshoe!
That’s interesting. I wouldn’t think there would be any difference between how they behave on either 🤔
Hi Wes,
Great video - thank you. Unfortunately Adorama (who seem to be the only supplier for the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II) do not appear to ship to the UK. Which puzzles me somewhat. Shame as I'd like to have one of those !!
Yeah I had to pay a pretty penny to get one from them in Canada. 🤦🏻♂️
Hi Wes I have Godox Ad200 pro, westcott FJ 80 and a Sony flash however I own a Sony A7R4a and Sony A911 on listening to your video I’m not sure if buying any of these Godox triggers will be reliable with my Sony set up in light of the autofocus set up etc. Which trigger system would you recommend for Sony Cameras.?
Awesome video by the way.
Many thanks
I’m not sure what you mean. Why wouldn’t it be reliable?
I have both the XT2 and FlashPoint R2 Pro2 imported from Adorama to the UK. Total cost was just over £100GBP including shipping and taxes and while that's roughly double the US price it's still cheap for a high-end trigger and well worth it IMHO. The Pro2 has more features than any other Godox trigger but I would say its main appeal is the number of direct-access buttons, with far less menu-diving and messing about with short-press/long-press actions. It's way more intuitive. It doesn't have a pass-through hotshoe of course, so I also have the XT2 for that and as back-up, bearing in mind how easy it is to drop and damage a trigger. Pro2 is the only trigger to have all these features: TCM, delay function (essential for HyperSync), 2nd curtain sync, modeling LED control, channel scan, BlueTooth, plus a few others. BTW, the two flash firing buttons are not duplicates - top button fires the selected group only, bottom button fires all groups. ps What's the word on non-rechargeable lithiums? Photo-forums seem to say they're the best option for Godox triggers.
Very interesting. I use the XPro and very pleased with it, yes it can get in the way now and then but I like the functionality! I also have the X1T but no longer use it.
Hi Tony, does your Xpro underexpose the pictures while shooting in TTL mode?
@@rizanamatya9191 Not that I have noticed. However I rarely use TTL.
very comprehensive review. Is it true hat only the XPro2 can turn off a flash group? That's the biggest hassle I have when setting up multiple lights having to go to the light itself to turn on/off. thanks!
If you mean the quick turn off with a double tap, the X2T can also do it, but a firmware update is required to enable this.
@@WesPerry yes. I want to set each of my speed lights individually without having to go to the speed light itself for on/off. so if my 3 lights were 3 groups, double tab 2 of the groups would shut off 2 lights and i could adjust the remaining one from the trigger, thxs! I know the sony flashes and trigger can do this.
Wes, I found you because I'm looking at updating my portable flash system. I found this to be very informative! However, one of the reasons for updating is because I need "Rear or Second Curtain Sync" for photographing model train setups to show motion, and I'm looking at the Godox TT685C flashes. Also, I have 2 Canon 550EX flashes and I'm still trying to find out if these triggers will fire the Canons. Can you elaborate on these 2 issues?
If you’re using a Godox trigger for canon with Godox flashes, you simply select rear curtain sync in your camera and go.
To control your canon flashes you would have to use X1R units to fire them with your Godox transmitter. I’m not totally sure if that would allow proper rear curtain sync, though.
@@WesPerry Wow, thanks for the quick reply! Currently watching your video about the TT685! Anyway, I think for now I will be purchasing the flash to get the rear Curtain Sync. If I need to have Rear Curtain Sync on multiple flashes, I'll probably update my complete flash system, however, I have the Canon flashes and was just wondering if I can include them in my setup.
Thanks for all the good info. Subbed!
Can a trigger for a specific camera brand trigger a godox flash that's for a different camera brand?
e.g. Can a X2T-C trigger a TT600-S?
Yeah, the flashes don’t care what brand the signal is coming from (it’ll show up on some of their screens, but that’s for maintaining TTL compatibility that it is Aware of it).
Impressive video.
Thanks Wes
Hi Wes. Which 85mm f/1.4 dis you end up keeping! I suspect that you kept the GM because you love the rendering. Not betting the house though .....
I’ll be switching to the 85 Sigma when I have some money to do so. The copy I had was just a loaner. Unless the mkii version of the Sony comes out before that...then I’ll probably still get the sigma because I doubt I’ll be able to afford it. Haha
Man, this is what I call a review
Thank you.. This vid helps.. 😊😊😊
Great video, thanks ! I wish you had included the HSS (High Speed Sync) feature in your board. Maybe in another video... Merry Chrismas 🙂
Well, they all do hss, so there’s no differentiation there.
i'm subscribed already :)
another fab video too - I use the x1t and x2t mainly because then i can put on a little LED light to help with AF just so you know Wes - the double tap to enable/disable a group in latest x2t firmware :)
as an aside - which remote triggers are you using on top of the x2t hotshoe to fire the camera? I've found i can fire my camera remotely with a x1c-receiver if i pretty the button... but not when i press the shutter - though it does fire my canon camera when i attach so i'm wondering if there is something odd going on.
That’s odd. I’m pretty sure I have the latest firmware. Which camera variant of the X2T do you have?

Hey, thank you for the video Wes. Do you know if there is a way to adjust the power directly on the strobes without getting the power overwritten by the trigger when you fire? This is a nightmare because I shoot products and sometimes I have my camera high up and I cant reach the trigger and I need to change the power. I remember I saw this once but I dont know where. A+ Review. Thank you..
Commenting because I'm a good friend! Kidding aside, well done once again.
Thanks! I’m sure this will be the comment that tips the algorithm in my favour 😏
@@WesPerry That's what I'm here for.
Amazing video. I subscribed because of it!
I have tons of Godox monolights, a few different types. They nearly never misfire. I use the xpro trigger. I do 360 photography. The only issue I have is when I shoot with a one to 4 second interval. They often misfire then, like nearly always. I figured it was the lights / recharge time. I was wrong. If I just shoot by pressing the shutter button, even with 1/2 second intervals, they always fire.
Question: Is there something with the signal that 'locks' on for a short duration, like when the shutter button is pressed, and they searches after that for 5 seconds until it re-locks?
I very much appreciate your thought process. Curious to see if you've applied that to this problem in the past (if you've encountered it.)
Thank you!
I’ve put a lot of work into it and have been unable to empirically determine the cause. It’s pretty frustrating. I guess I’m just used to being able to sort that sort of thing out. Many say it’s all about the batteries, but I certainly couldn’t prove that to be true. So…your guess is as good as mine for now 😂🤦🏻♂️
To be clear, I’m not using multi shot, but just during regular shooting. I very rarely experience it, though. As I mention in the video, I suspect a lot of people are just having interference issues. Odds are there are enough causes that no one cause can be sufficiently isolated to determine how much any one thing is effecting it (wireless interference, proximity, battery voltage and current availability, latency, refire, self interference, compatibility, etc etc).
An ac power supply for your Trigger? Like an ac to dc wall adapter into a aa battery dummy?
Wanting to get back into flash. Hesitant on Godox because I had the xt1 and 2 tt600's and had a lot of reliability issues. Either it would make the adjustments from the trigger or the flashes would pop. Sometimes both sometimes one would go off but not the other. I don't need a bunch of fancy buttons, just a system that works when I need it to.
Hey there, I'm just a newbie when it comes to flashes. As somone just starting out, I just wanted to know which is a better choice for weddings and portraits - the Godox X2T or the Godox XPro II? This video went well over what I wanted to know. This is Awesome! Thank you kindly!
PS I'm definitely more informed but still undecided.
I personally prefer the X2T for weddings, as it tends to be a lot of crowded spaces, and the X2T takes up a lot less space when dangling from a strap or your hip.
@@WesPerry Thank you kindly for your advice!
Hello,
Thank you for the video.
You are talking very shortly about the issue with AF Assist Lamp with Sony cameras. You said that due to the problem, you are not using it. Okay, but how do you manage to get focus in very low light ambiance with moving subjects?
I haven’t had too much issue myself. I guess I just get creative with my AF? Lol
Hey, Quick question? I use the Sony Pro Mark II transmitter and was wondering if it would work with X1R receivers other than Sony. A friend gave me some Nikon and Canon speedlights and was hoping I could get them to work with my transmitter by buying the appropriate receivers. If they do work will I still get to use advance features like adjusting the speedlight's power from the transmitter and using HSS? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for making great content
They’ll be fully compatible, but an x1r doesn’t give you the ability to adjust flash power…
Dang, I really thought with the transmitters it allowed you to adjust the flash power on speedlights attached to those receivers. Basic dumb triggers it is then, lol ... Appreciate the response, Thanks Wes! Love all your informative content
Hi there, I recently purchased the flashpoint r2 pro and a R2 receiver. Upon testing the units I noticed that on highspeed sync my photos are coming out under exposed, even though I'm using the correct exposure. However when I shoot the same shot with the flash attached to the camera on highspeed sync the results are quite accurate. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you for your time and great job with the vid.
Is this ttl or not?
Hi, just like to say your all for videos are great. I am looking if you gel your flashes and do you have a video on color correction with or without gels
I used correction gels for a while but slowly lost them all and never replaced them haha
So how do you do all the different colors for wedding or rooms with warm lighting. Any videos with or without gel. Maybe you will make it. Plz let me know
@eliyahu101 usually the lighting is so dim/bad I’m completely overwhelming it at 1/16 to 1/8 power anyway 😬
So I've been using the XT32 C which for some reason seems to be a myth. I don't remember seeing anybody reviewing this trigger and I'd be interested to know how it compares to these 4. I originally bought it for my AD180 but I now use it with my AD200's and TT685 speedlite (with the receiver module). While it does everything I need, after watching your video, I'm now tempted by the XT2. Have you tried the XT32, any thoughts?
the X32 is considered to be a 'legacy product'. It was supposedly "discontinued" quite some time ago, but then never fully disappeared. Very odd.
very nice
man, giving a like for testing that shit in the snow. Dedicated.
Haha. If I didn’t do it in the snow, I’d have to shut down for 7 months if the year! 😂
@@WesPerry wow! We get it for like 3 months a year and that's aggravating enough, lol. Great work and incredibly thorough video.
Thanks for the detailed review of the Godox triggers Wes. My Flashpoint R2 Pro II Nikon trigger has FTF issues every now and then but the X2T has been rock solid, I just wish it had the TCM function. I should add my R2 Pro II must be v1 as it has the screw down locking hot shoe collar. One other point, the Godox BT app allows you to set the flash in decimal rather than fractional settings however, this function is not ported through to all of their flash and transmitter models, seems like they are a bit slow on the firmware updates to take advantage of this. BTW, I also use my Pocket Wizard MiniTT1 mounted on the X2T hoe shoe for my legacy strobes.
Interesting. I didn’t even know there was a version of the Pro II with the screw down collar.
I think all but the X1T will allow decimal control. I can’t say I ever use that, personally. For the work I do it’s more important to be able to make big changes quickly than to make super fine adjustments.
@@WesPerry Check out this page when it was introduced with the screw lock, flashhavoc.com/flashpoint-r2-pro-mark-ii-transmitter-for-nikon-now-available/. As far as decimal control, neither of my Flashpoint R2 Mark II or my Godox X2T triggers will display decimal flash output, only fractions. Additionally none of my AD600Pro's, ASD400Pro's or Ad200 will display decimal output and there is no menu item to change it. The only device that shows decimal output is the Godox BT app but since it doesn't transmit this directly to the triggers or flashes its kinda pointless. I get what Godox is trying to do, mimic Profoto's power output setting but until everything in the ecosystem can actually display decimal output, it will be fractions and I'm okay with that. For actual power output 1/10 steps is actually the same and has legacy understandability such as 1/8+0.6 rather than 7.6. This again just shows that Godox need to work on the last 10% of the implementation to finish the job.
Do you hate updated firmware on all your devices?
@@WesPerry As far as I can see from both Godox and Adorama's support sites, yes. The Godox X2T-N is v1.0 and the Flashpoint R2 ProII-N is v1.4. The only trigger that will display decimal is my X2T-N in the MENU ->STEP section however none of my Godox strobes will display power settings in decimal only fractions.
Use the X-Pro myself. Best one of the lot IMO.
Would be nice to be able to double tap the group button to switch that group off. Also you can turn modeling lamps on on the original ST trigger , you just double tap the ch/gr button.
Yeah, that was a part of a firmware upgrade, but I’m a little unclear as to whether that update was applied to all variants of the trigger. 🤔
@@WesPerry Ahh i see. Would be a tad strange if it didn't.
The camera variants are more different than one might expect. There are numerous differences in even the basic operation of some of them from Sony to Canon to Fuji. Is truly bizarre. When I first used a Canon X1T I thought it was broken, but it turns out it just has a different interface from the Sony one. And Fuji/Olympus triggers are often left waiting for updates that Canon/Nikon/Sony triggers long ago received.
I have the Pro II, and it’s mostly great (I do like the TCM feature for when I’m too lazy to use a light meter); however I recently found a use case which makes me want to get the X2T. With the camera on a tripod in portrait orientation, the angle of the Pro models is just all wrong. I have to step to the side of the camera to see and use the screen and buttons. With X2T, I think I’ll be much happier to have consistent view and access to all the camera and flash controls from the same rear vantage point regardless of camera orientation. Of course, handheld this is no big deal as flipping the camera orientation from accessing controls to taking the shot is pretty natural and quick. And as you point out, it would be convenient to have a place to park my remote shutter receiver instead of just leaving it dangling from the cord. Oh, one other gripe on the Pro series. Yeah, the dial sucks. It’s just way too small to work well on the flat. Heck, my thumb is bigger than the wheel. It looks like operating the X2 wheel from the edge rather than its face will be much easier to scroll through multiple stops. Thanks for the detailed review and the super geeky lesson on batteries!
Thanks!
It’s frustrating that there is no one “best” option.
But at the same time, it’s great to actually have options!
Thanks for an in depth review of the Godox Triggers Wes, you have put a lot of effort into this and it shows. Question: Any ideas as to why the TCM feature was excluded from the XT2? I have the XT1 Xpro2 and the XT2. I now mainly use the XT2, I think the form factor and features are a good balance. I rarely shoot TTL, but removing the TCM features is a shame for when you might need it. Wes, I have subscribed to your channel, don't need any equioment currently, but if you have a small donation button anywhere on the web, I would buy you a coffee each time I watch one of your videos, not going to provide you with a living, but every little helps.
I assume it was left out simply because that form factor has less buttons.
And I’ll have a think about a donate button 😉
@@WesPerry Wes, you would be surprised how much a donate button will generate after six months to a year. I also, think people who appreciate the effort you put into your effort will be happy to buy you a coffee (virtual) and all those pennies or cents soon add up.
My wife just bought me the Xpro-ii for Christmas and the buttons are the same as the original Xpro. the groups are not down below like the one you are showing in this video but up on the side by each row the original. Maybe they switched it since your video. But I’m glad it’s not like the one you have. Because I am so used to the original but I was having issues of it not being compatible with both my Sony a7rv and my a7iv and it would only work on my a7iv and not compatible on my R5. And that was with the newest firmware update so I’m glad this new one works on both cameras
The XProii came out a year or so after this video, and isn’t related to the R2Proii. Very confusing 😏
@@WesPerry hahaha no doubt. Yeah I couldn't figure out what one you had. I was just glad it didn't have the group buttons on the bottom like the one you had. Thanks for pointing that out. Great channel. Don't see you post much. But when you do I get excited to see your content
Wow, such a complete and helpful vídeo! I have one question if you allow me... Imagine I'm shooting a person and I want to alternate between a photo with flash and a photo without flash, do we have to turn off the flash, take the photo, turn on the flash, take the photo and so on or is there a kind of Hold button that we press and the trigger is on standby but not off and when we want we press it again and to take a photo with flash??? Sorry, I'm about to buy my first flash so I don't have experience... Thank you so much! I hope you understand...ahahahha english is not my first language... I also not sure if you said how many times can you trigger with one batteries fill (I know the batteries are diferrent)
The easiest thing to do is simply turn the trigger off and on, yeah. There isn’t really any startup time, so this isn’t a big deal.
If you’re using more than one flash, the X2T and XPro2 allow you to double click one flash group to turn it off or on quickly.
And as far as number of shots you get on one set of batteries, we’re talking thousands. It’s a number higher than I would like to experiment with. Haha
I’m pretty sure most people’s batteries in their triggers die just as much from internal discharge over a few months as they do from actually being used by the trigger itself.
@@WesPerry Ohhh thank you so much for answering, very kind of you!!!!😊 Very helpful!
Hey.Very good video.
I have a XPro paired with the sony 7 riii. There is 1black frame out of 10 because the Flash is not firing.
I am working in my Livingroom that is 25 squermeters big.Do you have any guess why there are so many miss fired shots?
Have you tried a channel scan?
It’s also entirely possible that you need to switch to the lower power mode. Sometimes in smaller spaces the transmission power is too high.
@@WesPerry Thanks.i will try it out and let you know if it works.
Fascinating stuff. I have the X1T which is fine for most things. My only gripe is that the screen has to be viewed straight on. With the camera on a tripod low down you have to get on your knees to stand any chance of being able to read the screen. For this reason I'm probably going to get an Xpro.
At least it's great that we have options! I suppose an articulating elbow would be nice, but would also add a point of failure.
Aquí mi like y me suscribo. Excellent Review
Nice video. Can the Godox X2T for a SONY, control a Godox Nikon flash?
Yep!
I like to use the non rechargable FR06 (AA) lithium batteries because of how much lighter they are. It's not that the difference in weight makes any huge difference all in all, but on a lighter camera setup the extra weight on top front of the camera kind of disturbs the balance. On stuff like the APS-C Fujis and Sonys when combined with pancake lenses it can be quite significant.
I don't use rechargeables since I don't shoot with them that often and thus the self-discharge of e.g. a NiMH would have me recharge them more often than I need to replace an alkaline or lithium battery.
It's a shame the red focusing help lights doesn't work with mirrorless cameras. I wonder how having a mode that engages the modeling lamps only when focusing would work.
Unfortunately the incompatibility comes mostly from the camera manufacturer and not the flash/transmitter manufacturer. There needs to be a pin active on the shot shoe to tell the flash when to activate the focus assist, but that pin can only activate in AF-S mode for some reason...presumably that’s something that a camera firmware update could fix, but...it’s been a while now, so I wouldn’t expect much.
