  • There have already been some great walkthroughs by Loopop and Red Means Recording (linked above) so in this series I'd like to focus on the more exotic 'modules' in the Hector virtual modular module. It reminds me a lot of VCV-Rack because it has the most important Mutable modules on board (Plaits, Grids, Marbles, Warps, Clouds, Tides, Rings, etc) but even then you'll be just scratching the big touch surface. There are amp sims, there's convolution reverb and a huge array of effects and utilities. It could be a great starter module too.

    Since I have invested in this module some months ago it is still my go to module for a lot of stuff especially combined with a midi controller like faderfox PC4

    Hi Cine, .. thanks.
    Yes, this appears to be covering, what I've got available in my 3 main modules, presently .. minus the knob controlling. The use of knobs, might be a plus, for the set-up, I've got, in hand, though.
    Wow, .. things keep evolving, at least in some ways.

      Yes, this thing is so powerful it almost hurts when I look at the modules I already have...

      One idea for tactile control over Hector would be to get a MIDI faderbank module like the Sweet 16. I don't see why that wouldn't work for modulation and amplitude control.

      @@johnnymidnight2982 You're absolutely right. I purchased a Befaco VCMC for this so I can convert CV to midi CC messages. I got it for the EaganMatrix but it will also work great with Hector.

    I'm hesitating between the Beebo and the Hector, so out of interest, how are the three foot-pedal buttons replaced on the Hector? Both units look really interesting, it's a shame they didn't treat the Beebo like a Deluge, and put a couple of CV/Gate connections so it could be more directly linked with a modular. The Hector looks great, but the latency, and lack of direct on/off switches is a little annoying - plus I'd have to give up the HP too 😉.

      I am not sure, but you have plenty of CV inputs on the Hector. You could use a separate footswitch to CV to trigger or toggle hector, but it will get more expensive very fast :). Larachd from Instruo is amazing as a footswitch (next to the I/O)

    Love the smart phone trick. I have an electro-acoustic that I can't play either ;-) I need a cheap Strat or Les Paul knock-off. Or a home brew contraption.

    Well, so, it seems like a stupid question given what else Hector promises, but ECR+ or Hector?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад

      Hey, there are no stupid questions. It depends on how much you value convolution reverb. ECR+ provides tons of controls to 'move' through the impulse file and can run trails of many seconds. On Hector, you can load an impulse file and that's it. It also depends on how big your modular already is. If you're just starting out, Hector can help you figure out what real modules can be a great addition instead of buying them first and figuring it out later. Hector is a super power, but it's 'slow and sluggish' compared to patching and tweaking real modules. Since Mutable is out of business, it's also a great way to get the 'collection' in one go. Choices...

    Wonderful module for sonic explorations but to much Menu Diving and Programming, I’m more into immediate twiddling , playing modules as instrument, this is just DAW in a module, I don’t do DAWs at all more into Live Jams, EDM, Dawless but I’m bias so only an opinion
    Another brain teaser though Robert for sure, thanks

      I completely understand what you mean, Martin! However, I love to work on a DAW too and I must say Hector is pretty far away from a DAW and this is an amazing module to 'paint' some patch ideas you can save and take with you on a gig when space is limited. Let's just see what the following episodes will bring!

    Hmm… there’s something about pedals and pedal tech creeping into electronic music in general- and modular in particular- that makes me a little uneasy. I know what the word ‘synthesis’ means in its wider context, but it still strikes me as odd that things designed to be operated by feet (‘pedal’, yes?) should have found their way onto so many sound desks.
    That said, absolutely awesome sounds from this. If I could afford it- and had the rack space- it would be rude not to…

      I agree this module may be able to do way too much. I've invested a fortune in Mutable Instruments modules and this thing can just 'load' a lot of them as if it's nothing. When I first saw Hector and its long list of 'applications' it made me feel uneasy. But playing with it has been a true joy. I guess this is part of the modular's future too. It's crossing over...

      Imagining I had to control a music device with my feet makes me feel uneasy lol. Finally you can make a pedal board without having to buy pedals. They don't have CV (usually), they need those weird cables , often on the sides, making you waste space. I like the idea of a pedal board but I hate pedals lol ...

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад

      @@finngrim9763 I recently got the ZOIA Euroburo to accompany this one in a small case. Not for a second I associated these with a pedal. Hector is more like having VCV rack in a real modular case and ZOIA is like having a huge modular system in a small modular case. I love this stuff!

    • @cardboardmusic
      @cardboardmusic Год назад

      @@CinematicLaboratory Naturally, you have the Hector and the Zoia, but what are your thoughts on a Beebo, instead of the Zoia? The Zoia looks great, but I like the idea that you can see what you're doing visually to build sounds (on a Beebo).

    • @CinematicLaboratory

      @@cardboardmusic Honestly? I think the Hector/Beebo lack processing power. I'd go for the Zoia pedal version.
