This is as timely now as it was during the French Revolution. Mr. Rickman brings to Mr. Barnes' words an emotional, intellectual, and spiritual depth that is riveting and deeply moving.

To me this is Alan Rickman's best role. Too bad it wasn't a film.

It always will be relevant and just as hard to solve. I personally have no use for religion or authority... the only person I ever automatically respected was the Heart Surgeon who had just performed open-heart surgery on my Mother. I shook his hand with gratefulness... everyone else has to earn it and not just by presenting me with a title... Father, President, Vice President, etc.

Some of you should be listening to what he is saying, not just the sound of his voice. It's a brilliant soliloquy made all the more poignant by the fact that this was a real person who killed himself rather than let the repressive state do him in. Listen to what he's saying. It's still just as pertinent today as it was in the 18th century.

@Lytton333 Has it occurred to you that I was referring to the character's lack of desire to 'respect authority' without good reason which I totally agree with. Apparently you don't get what the piece is about. Another looney tunes Rickman fan, defending him when there is no slight. I think he has earned his title as 'actor' without doubt. I wasn't referring to him you

I don't considerer myself "stupid", "lunatic" or "thick-headed". Sorry if I didn't understand you well, but what I had read seems an offense to Alan. Yes, I am a really fan of him, of the man and of the actor. Once again, sorry.

Sorry, you don't considerer Alan Rickman a great actor??????? He's brilliant and he can make any kind of film and very, very well. What's the problem with you? You look for Alan Rickman's vids just to tell lies about him?

@GrissomLovesSara Has it occured to you that some people might have earned the title they are given? Mr Rickman would no doubt call himself an 'actor'.. has he therefore earned that title based on what you see above? Or not?

Alan's fans are the most disagreeable and paranoid fans I've ever encountered in my entire life. You all make life miserable for other fans everywhere. On Facebook, on youtube, even on Amazon in reviews. No one can say a word about Alan without 95% of his fans going nuts. I appreciate your apology but I'm sure it won't be the last time an Alan fan totally misunderstands something. I did not offend Alan and still can't understand how my original comment was misconstrued.

I know this was written 4 years ago but...it's not Alan Rickman fans, it's fans in general.

No it is Alan Rickman as Jacques Roux
(monologue by playwright Peter Barnes) 1989. Try to google for more information & thanks for ur comment.

What play is this from, The Ruling Class? Wonderful performance and phenomenal writing by Peter Barnes but I'm having trouble finding exactly what play this comes from. I want to read the whole thing.

So well said! I totally agree. You spoke my thoughts.
Oh as to Alan's performance - he is brilliant as always. No matter what role he takes, he takes it so seriously as if he has lived a whole life like that person.

@Samsis2 I'm sure that's why he took the part. It's one of my favorite acting performances of his. Love it.

If some normal preacher was preaching this to me I don't think I'd be able to listen and stay awake. But with the beautiful voice of Alan Rickman I'm sitting here completely enthused. I still have no clue what he's talking about ....but I could watch this over and over just because of his voice.
