At the time of this video, the naming scheme of the capsules was "dark capsule" and "standard capsule". Through great feedback it was quickly discovered that a more accurate and helpful naming scheme would be "Vintage Capsule" (formerly Dark) and the "Modern Capsule" (formerly Standard). The Vintage Capsule is the one that very closely resembles the Neumann KM84. The Modern Capsule helps instruments cut through in a mix by reducing some of the low end that we often don't want when trying to add more presence to a source. It also gracefully boosts frequencies beyond 2kHz, without sounding harsh.
Congratulations Josh! So glad that your channel is growing and companies starting to notice it. This Serrano mic was great, especially on the guitar picking - detailed on transients, but not too peaky or too bright. Drums sounded pretty natural too. With just 2 mics like this you can cover the whole song, really nice.
Hey, Josh! Just discovered your channel. Great stuff! I love the detail of the Standard/Modern capsule of this mic and am in the market for a pair of SDCs. If you said in the video and I missed it, my apologies, but I'm curious to know what preamp you used.
Hey Benjamin, thanks for checking out my channel! The preamp used on all these examples was the Shadow Hills Quad Gama on the Iron setting. It has been a favorite of mine for years, I use it on everything!
Hey Josh, I agreed with everything in this video and just checked out the Serrano website, the thing is packed to the brim! Open up most other small diaphragm condenser that was designed in the last 10 years and there's hardly anything going on. That transformer looks massive!! Really tempted to buy a pair and replace all other SDC in my arsenal now....
Hey, thanks for checking out the video! One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that Serrano has a 14 day return policy so definitely check out a pair and see if they can replace your current SDCs!
These sound great!! I have a single KM84 and keep waiting for a decent deal on a clean second one - but I may need to check these out as another option! Cheers
As you May remember I chose the Serrano over beezneez. But I do love tubes. So mr seawell I need you to finish that next video !!! In terms of small condenser. This sounds awesome. I also like the Soyuz and the new Austrian audio. Austrian audio one translates very well if you havent checked them out. And the Soyuz has a little magic in them.
My friend is bringing his over next week. I have a feeling I will cave and just grab a pair. A good set of SDCs is something my set up lacks. I also know Josh Groban used the KM84 as his vocal mic on his first few albums. Pavarotti used to use KM84s and Schoeps CMCs. So I’m curious how these will sound on my voice as well.
I would've never thought those guys were using KM84s on vocals, that's awesome! I definitely look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Serrano 84 once you get to spend some time with them.
Hey Josh, again - synchronicity, about to sell our KM184s. We had them from new, in all the time of ownership never really liked them. I’ve owned original KMs and they are a different experience. The money will go towards the Chandler - I figure I could spend much less on SDC and get similar if not better results than the KM184s
Hey Jon! I think you could definitely save a bunch of money on a SDC pair by picking up the Serrano 84 and I don't anticipate you'd have any of the same concerns with the Serrano that you do with the KM184. Serrano has a 14 day return policy too. If you end up getting a pair, let me know what you think of them!

It was a true honor! Thanks and I can't wait to see what you come up with next :)
