Jones will be missed, but the Jacobs signing fits the Packers timeline so much better. He just turned 26. He's gonna be a nightmare to tackle at Lambeau during the winter. I also see them going for a RB in the draft as well. A 1-2 punch of him and someone like Blake Corum is interesting.
I also wonder if we will continue to see these kind of elite "super backs" like CMC, Saquon, Nick Chubb, and Josh Jacobs as much in the future. The pay, position lifetime, and number of spots on the team all favor the WR position. So if you are the kind of athlete who could be an elite RB, you could argue it makes sense to switch to the WR position if you can. It's been a while since we've seen the caliber of RB in the draft that you had with someone like Saquon, King Henry, AP...etc. I wonder if this level of back is becoming more rare and its going to take some time for the market to swing the other way when these backs become more scarce and teams start to pay even more for them. Switching to all grass fields would also probably be a huge benefit in the long run for avg RB career length as well.
Jones is a special player but you can’t have him as the highest paid back in football at age 30. He is missed but life goes on. Jacobs is an upgrade imo
Oh man, I am so freaking excited for my Packers to be a powerhouse, run heavy team again. I believe the last time my Packers were a run heavy team was during the Lombardi era 64 - 65 years ago. My team been a pass happy team for 31 - 32 years when the Mike Holmgren era began & for us to go back to the run game gets me sooo freaking excited because I absolutely love the run game. I pray we draft Kentucky's Ray Davis to be paired up with him. That would be a very scary RB duo.
🧀 Cheeseheads are going to absolutely love JJ#8 ! Take it from me a huge Raiders fan. He is way more shifty than people think and is very good with catching the ball too.
Aaron Jones was an amazing Packers player. Fact of the matter is, we play 17 games and from our best players, get less than half a season of productivity. The best running back in history but only plays 2 games, is less productive than the worst running back ever that plays all 17. That's just facts. Sometimes it's not worth having a ceilingless player with unlimited potential if they can't make muster. Gotta be on the field. Offensive line, QB, Corners... It's true for all of them. The best football ability is availability.
Sad that Jones is gone but from a football perspective it makes a lot of sense. Excited to see what kind of production Jacob’s can put up behind a better O line and with an offense that forces defenses to account for Jordan Love. I wonder how much he will improve when he’s not running into an 8 man box every single play

They didn't prioritize Jacob's over Jones, Jones wasn't going to take another pay cut and with the somewhat lower guaranteed money in Jacob's deal they basically gave him the same deal Aaron Jones got a few years ago and will have an out in a couple years if they want it
They have an easy out as soon as next off-season if you look at the deal. Extremely team option friendly if Jacobs ends up injured like he has been at times where they aren't committed to him but if he can be something special rushing like in 22 and overall healthy they maintain control
I get that the packers fans loved jones, but no 30 year old rb is worth that kind of money. It's very common for a rb past 28 to just fall off a cliff vs a gradual decline; more so than any other position. Also, JJ is an upgrade. He's younger and, like they said, fits the scheme much better. With solid Oline play and play calling, Jacobs can be a top 5 back.
The idea that GB desired a combination of the wide receivers, tight ends and n/s runner would be sound except that initially they were wanting to keep Jones. Just at a cheaper price. We don’t know how much cheaper but we can speculate. Even with speculation it still is more reasonable to assume they were wanting to replace Dillon, not Jones.
