      When I was a kid, cereal boxes were advertising these Ninja Turtle-themed sticky things that attached to your hands. The commercials made it seem like they would actually let you climb up walls like a Ninja Turtle. Spoiler...they did not.
      I REALLY felt that Calvin & Hobbes comic the first time I read it.

    That is exactly 100% my experience, to the point where I can almost no longer imagine how I ever managed to open the Amazon package that had my pocket knife in it.

      Honestly you can just punch through the tape if you're not gonna re-use the box and know that there's enough headroom over the object that you're not going to damage your product.

    Me as a kid getting my first pocket knife in Cub Scouts and looking for any reason to use it. Meanwhile my mom is lecturing me on how it isn’t a toy and giving death stares at my grandfather for giving it to me. Did I cut me finger before the day ended, yes. Did I hide said cut from my mom, also yes.

      As a kid I had a cub scout knife:
      🍴🥄 three utensils included: spoon, fork, & butter -
      I was working on something and asked my brother to get it for me he grabbed the blade to pick it up 😢

      I don't think I ever saw it again.
      For my next birthday (JrH?) grandpa got me a Rambo survival knife.

      In HS I bought a imitation Leatherman for work (until I could afford the real thing) I still have the original L.M. and collection of several others.

    Back in the pre-TSA days my pop-pop drove us to the airport and was going to wait with us at the gate. Going through security then, emptying his pockets, he had about $14 in loose change and like a 7" pocket knife. Did he get to just put it all back in his pockets and wait with us? Sure did

      Same thing happened to me in '99. Security caught me with my huge Gerber Gator knife. I thought I was going to go to jail but they gave it back to me and told me to have a nice flight.

    I used to get genuinely excited any time I had a reason to use my pocket knife for anything other than opening packages lol. Then I moved out onto a farm, and it gets used literally every day for something. Helped me understand the difference between a well-made one and a good looking one real quick lmao.

      @@kozmo7 my daily use is an old 3.5 inch Remington half-serrated spear-point flip knife. I could probably hunt down the exact model if you really want to know, but I've owned a few Remington flip knives over the years and they've all been pretty good knives.

      What sort of other brands are your top picks and what sort of brands have done you wrong?

      @@kozmo7 I honestly don't have a huge amount of experience to draw on. The couple of knives I had break or dull super fast were ones I had bought at fairs and mall kiosks years back and had no branding. Were pretty but not super useful. Buck brand knives and Remingtons are the only other knives I've used and both brands are quality, and Bucks are usually pretty good looking as well, but can be a little pricey.

      Knew a couple of guys that got into Filipino knife fighting arts and so began carrying a wide variety of knives. They resembled the scene in Batman The Dark Knight where the Joker is being searched at the police station.

    Honestly, this is the sole reason I carry one and it’s super helpful. I’ve also surprisingly heard the phrase “does anyone have a knife?” more times than I thought I would in life.

      Especially if you're a woman carrying one and know how to use it. Everyone always looks surprised.
      Best time in a Calculus lab at university I ever had a few years ago was when my group couldn't figure out the math but we all realised we were carrying pocket knives and just started a knife review in the back of the class.
      Worst part of 'does anyone have a knife?' is when the person that asked, holds out their hand towards you after you say yes, and they just assume you're going to give over your knife to them. . . Hello no!

    This explains why when you are in a social space and need to cut something random with a pair of scissors which you have, someone from somewhere who has a pocket knife will always make the biggest show (not show off show but like let me show you show) of the small cut.
    I used to wonder why it felt like it took so long, and it always came with a speech (knife in hand) and ended with a swaggered turn to place the knife back into the back left pocket. now I understand.

    The first one reminds me of when I was a camp counselor and we were camped out on the saddle of a mountain during an overnight backpacking trip. I had a hard time falling asleep because a copse of bushes looked kind of like a bear and I was mentally rehearsing how I’d use my utility tool to defend the campers if a bear came. (It didn’t even have a knife, but it could fold into pliers, so I imagined using it as a blunt dagger.)

    The box opening one is hilarious because as a kid when I got gifts, my grandpa would always pull out his pocket knife and offer to open the boxes. And my grandmother would like yell at him for having his knife while he was over at our house. And it was just so funny. I love them. They’re the best.

    The last part reminds me of something my grandfather has always said, “You’ll never cut yourself with a sharp knife.” Meaning you’ll be more careful with it and you won’t be struggling to cut something and leading to injury.
