- In episode 9 of our boatbuilding series, we finish cutting and fitting most of the Coosa Board on our custom-built 29-foot hybrid bay charter boat. Now more fiberglass work begins. We are using 1708 biaxial glass by V2 composites, and finishing with a layer of 1 oz mat for a cosmetic finish. I’ve always double gloved when doing glass work, just so I can peel and keep on working the glass. Well, except when I was first learning, the only gloves available were to thick and cumbersome so we used bare hands. So glad we finally got access to examination gloves and now gloves specifically designed with the craftsman in mind🙂 Love watching a master work😎

You are an absolute natural for making videos. You know your craft and are comfortable in front of a camera. You get stuff done right and quick too. I'm guessing dad had a lot to do with all that ! I just started doing glass work in my shop because I couldn't find anyone to send it to locally. It has been a brutal learning curve. I picked up several tips watching your videos that will really accelerate my learning curve.
I truly appreciate that! I'm trying not to embarrass myself or my family too bad on these videos! Happy to share the info. You are right, my father was a master boat builder and a fantastic teacher. I learned an awful lot from him, but sadly lost him to pancreatic cancer when I was 19. That was over 30 years ago. I have been building and repairing boats and running a fishing charter business since then. I have a son that loves fishing but has no interest in being a boat builder or repairman I honestly hate to see our knowledge of boat building and repair just disappear when I stop doing it. RUclips is a great way to keep this craft alive and share it. Glad it's helping you, and others like You!

you should come build my front deck on my hydrasport bay boat lol plywood rotted so now i gotta redo the whole main deck and fiberglass repair aint cheap! Lol that boats gonna come out good when its all said n done!
Yep, Boat work in general is expensive. But if you buy all the tools and materials yourself you can be surprised at how much that can be too! The coosa is a great product if you are looking for a very strong and lightweight plywood replacement. Again awesome video!!! I seen the piece of Coosa that you are calling the step-up for the bow deck and it looks like it is pitted or like some bubble holes from the manufacturing process. I was wondering if that is the way Coosa board looks on one side or is it just isolated spot? Are the pits something that I should expect? Thanks in advance for your insight. You ROCK!!!
Thanks so much! Coosa is usually the same on both sides. That was just a random spot with some small imperfections. It was not a problem to work around the spots. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
great video with what you get the plates you use to make the plaster I'm thinking of the monolithic or a sandwitch ?
Thanks, Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope I am answering your question, The plates or panels we are using are made by Coosa composites. We are fiberglassing on both sides, so it would be considered sandwich core construction. I designed and built all of the molds we are using from scratch, using a combination of furniture-grade plywood, fiberglass, and marine-grade fillers. Appreciate you watching

Thanks for watching! No plans to mass-produce, but would consider selling or leasing the molds when I am finished with this one.
will you remove the screws or glass them over?
That is a good question. Since we use stainless screws we typically leave them in. I definitely think they add holding power. In the shop, we call it gluing and screwing, We have been using this technique with good results for a good while. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching and commenting!
What putty are you using...I've heard some use automotive fiber glassing products and putties. Nice job.
We use a lot of 3M vinyl ester high-strength filler and Napa short-strand filler. I show the materials and the cans they come in some of the videos. Thanks for watching!

Was that a Fortress FX-11, how much of the end did you cut off the stock, also did you have to drill new hole in the shackle end? I wonder if that compromises the set or the holding power. My Bluewater 2550 has a vertical anchor holder but the FX-11 is too long to fit so I have to use the smaller FX-7 I had on my old Contender 23 open.
Not sure which series it is, I can check. I took about 3 or 4 inches of the stock, just enough to make it fit. Yes, I did drill a new shackle hole. I have about 10 of good heavy chain ahead of the anchor, holding power seems to be good. Hope that helps! Appreciate You watching and commenting!
did you glass the underside of your deck ( walking flats) or did you just primed ?
I resin-coated everything, then on a few of the larger spans I glassed with a layer of 1708. I also glassed the underside of the gunnel caps, and the bow and rear deck. Thanks for watching

Yes, I get most of my supplies from them.

Why the Napa pro strand?
I use it because it is a good product. Evercoat and 3m make similar products if you are more comfortable with those brands.
Where can I buy some coosa and how much does it cost?
I buy it from Advanced plastics in Elberta, Alabama. Composites One, and Boat Outfitters also carry it. My price as a boat builder for the 3/4 inch thick, 26 pound density is in the mid 300 dollar range. Thanks for watching.
