Love them old 1693s...If you were buying a used truck, and heard one idling on the lot, you'd walk right on past it. At idle, they sound like an old washing machine. They pulled hard...
I completely agree, never run a diesel without water in the cooling system. Like you said, those engines have precombustion chambers with rubber seals and rubber liner seals. Even without those things water pump seals running dry etc is bad. So many guys do this. Then they wonder why they get problems. If I were you I’d pressure test the cooling system on that engine before installing it. If you have to pull the head, it’s a lot easier now.
Drove a New 1973 W900 KW with a1693 TA 13spd what a Great Engine the sound climbing a mountain with straight pipes and that big turbo was a feeling all its own. Great Engine thanks for the video
I worked for a Cat dealer for years. I totally agree with you, never running any engine without coolant in it. The 1693TA is almost as tough as a 6 1/4" bore D353 PCTA my favorite engine or the D343 PCTA. I remember one D353 that had 60K hours on it before it was shutdown for overhaul.
Hi Jeff Justin carson here just wanted to thank you for the comments about truck drivers not being the one for causing all the wrecks your industry and mine are the ones keeping the country going I haul chicken and produce for a living keep up the good work
That bicycle trail is the ex Milwaukee Road railroad main line. I have video from when it ran. There are some on You Tube also. Thank you for taking us on tour. Excellent video Jeff.
I really admire your knowledge of Cat engine’s. It is interesting to listen to you talk about engines like this or when you tear an engine down for overhaul. I spent my career installing, servicing and selling printing presses, so to listen to a guy who is spending his life working on and around diesel driven equipment is most interesting. Thanks for making the videos and .......sharing your knowledge. From Missouri
I really don't remember when I subscribed but maybe you know with all the technology available. I'm 72 now and just hanging on as different parts of me fail. I keep telling em to let me go as I just got no reason to rob air from the young anymore. Me; NOT so good, I had several broken vertebrae in my neck and my lumbar was mush. I told you this before and your going to remember like the ex who remembered everything I ever did wrong in my life... my entire life and some. Well long and short the fifteen years have been long and miserable and doctors think your a pill chaser cause they don't see the problem till one finally did find it and it was too late to fix cause of age and no suicide by doctor rule and I am telling to just go for it, one way or another if it ain't enjoyable then count me in a new game. Maybe not that long but a while. So nice to ride along. The other is a guy I know local who is a snowbird, texas in winter months and here in sommer. I would say its been there twenty years and according to my buddy, It still ran great and it was complete except for that bellhousing. I can't remember much now as its been some time since I seen it and it is not easy for me to get out so if they are scarce, then I can give you his no. and put the two of you in contact with each other. I really liked that big black truck and reminded me of one I had that had gone too far and wouldn't hold liners anymore. I would get up and let five gallons of water out of the oil pan... and that was from driving it thinking go ahead and blow up but no it just kept on ticking. Tighten the drain plug and refill all the orifices so things were right and it moved anything you wanted to move and I mean anything. I have never heard a engine purr any better. Well thats my story and I am sticking to many parts of it as ninety nine and one hundred per cent true as I can remember

I don't know anything about the precup engines but I can say for sure there's no issue running E model or C15 family engines without water in them, as long as it's only for a short time. No issues with upper filller bands, etc. Cool old engine. Enjoyed the video.
Love watching your video . Me an old dozer operator I run d6 d7 d8 d9 d10 but it was time to get off all that . Bought my own truck a 86 super liner based in st George QLD Australia I have had it 18 yrs now anyway have fun . Colin
Running an engine of any type that's water cooled when dry scares the hell out of me...the first thing that came to mind was how often or who else was this done for. You cook the crevice seals around the liners and that's big time work to correct...my 2 cents worth.
Totally agree and was taught the same way with the start up policy: never, ever, ever, ever, start up a diesel without any water in it!!! I hope those pre-cup O-rings are OK, 🤞🤞
Used to tow army tanks with Caterpillar 830M ex-military tractors that had a 1693 engines. These tractors had the dozer blade removed and the pan, were weighed down to 60,000 lbs and had a big tow bar on the back.
I drove commercially for 36 yrs., so I agree with what you say about 4 wheelers Jeff. And I never had a truck without a CB in it. Todd Konoske the retired trucker.
Was taught to never run a diesel of any kind without some sort of cooling water, at least a garden hose. Hard to tell how much that one has been ran without water, hopefully it will be fine. Heck of a drive pretty country thanks for sharing.
The Hiawatha Trail is what was left behind when the Milwaukee Road Railway (Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad) abandoned most of its western network (downsized to less than 5,000 route miles). Something funny I learned about this virus is this: If a drunk consumes nothing but Corona Beer, does he have a 'corona-virus'?
Been awhile since I’ve driven that stretch. Done it several times back in the 80s and 90s, between Seattle and Cody, from my Navy days.... Beautiful drive, and nice engine find.
Thanks for the road trip Jeff.Really nice country you have there.I hope that 1693 works out for you if not at least the parts off of it are worth more than what you paid.
What a nice run to get your new motor. Sounded great and IMHO I would of blocked both ends of the engine to add another layer of protection and to prevent any slippage if you had needed to shut it down in a hurry I'd like to live up in Idaho if I weren't sickly. Washington DC has some of f the best medical in the entire country and I reckon I'll die over here. But pretty country and clean air.
Madill Logging Equipment used the 1693 in most of their logging tower builds. Great engine. They were laying all over the BC coast, until the scrappers with barges came in and cleaned up all that old iron.
In my part of Oregon we have an abandoned RR that has been turned into a bike path and walking trail. It cuts through prime farm land and they have placed restrictions on using herbicides and insecticides within 150 ft. of the trail. Farmers are not happy with this requirement. Trail users also contribute to a lot of unwanted litter in the fields.
Coolant line in pan and quick release is probably to preheat engine off of a pickup or service truck. Seen it before on skidders. Pull up to job, connect cooling lines from truck to equipment, sit in truck for half hour and let it warm up the other engine
Really enjoyed riding with you up the Panhandle! Familiar territory for me, I’m over here in Tri-Cities Washington. She sounds like a good one! (the 1693). No four wheelers, no problems! 😄

I don't think that there is any question that four wheelers are a major contributor to a lot of truck accidents. Hey Jeff. Love the scenes of you Cat travels. In your down time you could be a travel agent? You nailed the pronunciation of my home town, Waipapa, awsome. It Maori language, a little similar to Hawaiian. Keep ya hat on, stay safe. Les Francis, Waipapa, NZ
Running without water is a big no no like you say. Not only o-ring damage but it can break the heads. I have seen D9 engines that ran low on water crack into the pre chamber bores and leak water ruining the head. I would assume that other indirect injection Cat engines will do the same. in any event it ain't good. Cheers
Jeff, you drove by my house twice! Exit 85 Huson Montana! i have driven through some of those tunnels on the route of the Hiawatha in the early 80's after the railroad was abandon!
Jeff, we have a 27U also. I have heard they were built for fire apparatus. I think 27U126 and below are D343, above that are 1693, factory air/fuel ratio control.
Let's hope this ole girl is sealed up tight... Hate guys like that, who just do it for attention & Proof it runs, Not that it's a Bad thing he wanted to show you how it ran but without coolant etc... Yeah like you said big no no

Wallace IS a cool little town. My daughter and I stopped their to eat when I was driving with her to Michigan to take her to grad school. ( She got her Masters a year ago. MUCH smarter than her old truck driver Dad. Ha! ) ToddTRT
FYI: Back in the day, it was rumored that Wallace was known for a certain “house of ill repute”.
Haha at 20:03 Letsdig18 sticker from North Carolina and other RUclipsrs, keeping America entertain since the invention of the world wide web. Thanks Jeff for not jackknifing coming down the mountain I was holding on for dear life to my lounge chair.
Nice to see you go through frenchtown sometimes.
Great to hear that 1693PCTA!
A buddy of mine has 27U 156 its Green, he found out Sold to Pierce Fire Equipment and then wound up in Oshkosh airport crash trucks or plows, is what Cam said. Pierce and Oshkosh have a corporate sisterhood. They're also higher rated 450 hp.
Fhy pa pa
You said it pretty good the first time 😀
SWAG...
You are talking like an Aussie now!
Cheers mate.
Ps: beautiful countryside .
Broke out on that puppy. Cab over KW with a 5x4. Downside, no radio/ cb or any disractions. Just the old Cat rattle all night long.It was the big horse on the road back then.....425 horse setting.

Before long Mr.Paydirt your gonna be able to stand in your yard and play Oprah! You get a 1693! You get a 1693! YOUGET A 1693! everyone's a winner. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Looks like you found a diamond! Sweet. 👍
I saw trucking freight efficiency was up 20% the last two weeks thanks to lower traffic.
Buddy I got in so much trouble Last Saturday for turning all the Cat machines into jpaydirt machines.
I spent almost 2 yyears in the silver valley working for a contractor at the Lucky Friday mine in mulan. It was a fun place.
Man that is an old cat. Made in 1693.
Jeff, saw you just had a big earthquake today up your way. Hope everything is ok with you and the family and the shop.
Loved the sticker on the 18 mile sign, he gets everywhere
Very nice engine i love your Videos keep up your great work
Running without water is a big no no like you say. Not only o-ring damage but it can break the heads. I have seen D9 engines that ran low on water crack into the pre chamber bores and leak water ruining the head. I would assume that other indirect injection Cat engines will do the same. in any event it ain't good. Cheers
Can supply to the UK if whats the shipping costs, many thanks
I think it is a bout time for a new windshield.
Jeff, you drove by my house twice! Exit 85 Huson Montana! i have driven through some of those tunnels on the route of the Hiawatha in the early 80's after the railroad was abandon!
You know I did't even realize it until I got home,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,fffffllllllllllllll
That Hiawatha Bike Trail is on the old Milwaukee Road rail line going over Lookout Pass...the name of the passenger train was the Hiawatha.
I need one of the cat vinyl sticker. With the dancing girl. I've looked on Amazon. No luck yet
That trail is on the old Milwaukee Road RR right of way. It was overhead electric over the mountains
Hiawatha trail. Ride to the bottom, bring the bus back up. Did it, would do it again.
Jeff, we have a 27U also. I have heard they were built for fire apparatus. I think 27U126 and below are D343, above that are 1693, factory air/fuel ratio control.
Awesome dozer Joe from Sinclairville ny
Let's hope this ole girl is sealed up tight... Hate guys like that, who just do it for attention & Proof it runs, Not that it's a Bad thing he wanted to show you how it ran but without coolant etc... Yeah like you said big no no
