  • What is the best strategy for the Zargon player in HeroQuest to take? HeroQuest puts a lot of power in the hands of the heroes to control the pace of the game. Zargon must use the opportunities he is given with what monsters he has during his turn most effectively if he is to defeat the heroes. We discuss the strategy the Zargon player should employ in order to win the game.

Hmm.. i have a totaly different approach when playing morcar/zargon, well 90% of the time that is.
Trying to kill off the heroes isnt terribly diffucult, but imo takes away the feel of adventure and heroism. I try to chipp away at them, add or remove monsters in the setup depending how wounded they are. If it gets tense and some or all are near death, i drop them some healing or other goodies. Everything builds up for the last confrontation, if its in the quest, or something similar.
We've had games were the heroes didnt fare to bad, but they thought they were dying and would fail for most of the dungeon only to pull off a heroic victory at the end.
Playing it more competitive is fine, you do you and all that. But for me, and apparently the other players, it is the stories that are created in these tense games, were looming defeat and death spur them on to acts of heroism, infuse them with the will for selfless sacrifice and the desire to reap glorious victory despite all odds, that count more than winning the game.
I aways loose als gm, but a story well told is all i need.
The best thing about heroquest is its flexibility to play however you like at a given time.

Exactly, only because you take the role of Zargon/Morcar does not mean you have to kill the players to win. You can consider guiding them through a hard journey as a victory. I like to further roleplay and act according to the mind points of the monster. Undead would most likely act dumb while smarter monsters are more likely to do the best move available.

Another thing Zargon can control is the order in which the monsters act. You can use this to maximize your attacks when a hero is already adjacent to an enemy by having that monster attack, and then move out of the way so another monster can move in and attack. You can also use this in the rare events where you have multiple monsters with more than 1 BP to help distribute the damage as it's also more effective for the players to gang up on and remove single targets.
A good example of this is the Gargoyle room in quest 1. You get a Gargoyle, a Chaos Warrior and 2 Orcs. The Gargoyle and 1 of the Orcs cannot be reached by the Heroes meaning that this room is almost impossible to clear in the first turn. If the Orc and/or Chaos Warrior survive that 1st turn then have them attack and then get out of the way for the 2nd Orc and Gargoyle to move in and attack. Keep cycling them out like this until the battle is over.
Also you don't have to have monsters fight to the death every time. They can run the opposite direction in a hallway or escape through an unblocked doorway (goblins are especially good at this as they're almost impossible to chase down). Once they're activated Zargon can make them go wherever they want them to. Remove the monster from the board when they're out of sight and track them on your map. You can have them circle around and stalk the players, always just behind a corner, waiting for the players to enter a room with a big fight, and then surprise! your Wizard is getting attacked by an Orc!

OK here is the OFFICIAL word from Avalon Hill: "Thanks for reaching back out! That is Mentor on the screen. To view the visage of Zargon would be to glimpse at the very embodiment of DREAD, which would shatter any mortal mind. So, you know, we keep him under wraps."

@@EHeathRobinson I always thought it was Mentor - Bad Guys don't have Gandalf Beards, they have Jafar Patches or goatees. QED. ;)

    Hello,
your Heroquest videos are very good and I enjoy the analysis. Have you ever played the black guard master edition? I would love to see your thoughts on that one. From my analysis it is most likely not possible for the heroes to win that one.
Do to the difference between europe and UK rules I had to install house rules to have more difficulty, but always be capable of adjusting it without my players noticing it. Fun starts to vanish if you snipe one char after the other. Loosing equip is fatal, especially for the addons from what I read.

I have not ever played with the Black Guard. I hardly know anything about it, actually as I never had the master edition and I don't see a lot posted about it online. I would be great to look at though.

I used to think it was ZARGON pictured on the little curtain thing. Now I've heard that is actually MENTOR on the curtain. Have you head anything on who this is?

Hmmm. That is interesting. Now that I think about it, I don't know that I have ever read anything that has specifically said. But, I have also always thought it was Zargon. He is in something of a command pose over the forces of Chaos.

@@EHeathRobinson Yeah in the NEW Heroquest Mythic Tier, it COMES with a figure of Mentor (and a card for him) and it's the exact Wizard from the Curtain! The Mythic Tier also came with 3 (yes 3) all NEW Quest Books!!!!

@@KentKaliber Well that is very interesting. I didn't go in for the new HeroQuest game since I already had the original game that I had kept in such good condition. That is very interesting about Mentor. It was always Zargon to us.

@@EHeathRobinson The NEW one is absolutely amazing. Has the EXACT spirit of the original game (Same Board, Same Rules, etc) but NEW figure sculpts ---- plus the Mythic Tier has 3 all new Quest Books that have NEVER been released (these quests have some amazing new creativity, including a quest with a spiral staircase and floors). They have released updated Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord, and a Frozen Horror will be dropping soon. They also released a NEW Hero Figurine --- the Commander of the Guardian Knights!

      @EHeathRobinson  2 года назад

@@KentKaliber Actually, the sculpts were some of the things that put me off on the new game. I like the look of the original art and sculpts so much better. But I never had the Frozen Horror pack - that is the Barbarian Quest pack, right? So, if they rerelease that, then I will pick that one up.
