honestly announcement systems where sentences are just different sound files strung together are the best, it sounds cool and you can make new announcements without needing to record anything, which helps with mods
SAME! My favorite part of the old voice is that it was a text-to-speech program (in the 1990's wow!) built into the game that you can mod to say anything rather than using audio files.
It kind of blew my mind to hear these in the black Mesa mod: now just imagine what it would be like to here these in especially pre-disaster environments in project lambda if it were made into a full fledged game!..
Just imagine you're one of the employees working in a less dangerous section of the facility. You hear that things are glitching out like the lights flickering or the elevators getting stuck, but it's nothing to be outright scared of and the announcement system reflects that. That is until it chimes in with a slightly different sound effect and suddenly it's serious
Man, idk what everyone else is complaining about with the announcement system in Black Mesa. The entire goal of the game was to expand on the naturalistic worldbuilding of the original game with its enhanced fidelity, and thinking about Black Mesa as a workplace for more than ten seconds should be enough to understand why paying someone to record a bunch of lines (in-universe and in a meta sense) that can be strung together while still sounding at least somewhat natural would be a lot less grating on the thousand-plus employees than *bLaCk MeSa ExPloDe* I grew up with the original game, I do love the VOX built into GoldSrc, but it just wouldn't have fit with Black Mesa's tone.
Yeah, and the moment when the resonance cascade happens is when it says "Warning: high energy detonation detected in. materials lab", and I saw it's a bit different in the Blue Shift remake on the workshop, probably due to being in a different sector it says instead "Warning: extreme energy field hazard in-- sector C", and every alarm in the area turns on showing that indeed the disaster has just started.
The transcript actually got "Lima" and "India" backwards. It's supposed to be "Kilo India Lima" according to subtitles. Add another "Lima" onto the end, and what do you get?
@@blackaperturemesaresearchl3934 The old one wasn't as slow as this one. There's literally no reason one cannot design an announcement system with good pacing between spoken words. Crowbar Collective did many of these little unnecessary changes that makes the whole mod worse in my opinion.

The female voice sux compared to the original. And the military voice is cool but that transition is so cheesy. It should have been a less menacing version of a similar voice to the military version for regular announcements. That would have been amazing. Cuz original VOX worked due to how sterile and weird robotic it was, and then when the military took over it got even more menacing and slowed down but it was still similar. But, the 'stereotypical female announcer' voice kind of lost something, and then when it does the switch its just silly instead of scary.
The updated military voice is so great. They really managed to capture what was so cool and creepy about playing HL back when it came out and then suddenly the VOX (which was already weird and creepy sounding) suddenly sounds more menacing and starts directly talking to/about killing Gordon and how the facility was collapsing. The updated military voice got it perfect. I just wish they had the non military VOX less boring (slightly robotic female AI/computer announments is such a trope in sci fi) and that transition from the female voice to the military voice is... I just imagine how much cooler it would have been if it went from a similar sounding but less menacing VOX to that creepy voice.
