The part that shakes me the most is "If you have military training, firearms training, or any similar weapons training, contact your nearest military officer immediately."
They aknowledge that the situation is so bad - they're ready to use the help of any armed US citizen with a gun to try and contain it. Imagine just hearing that while you are trying to make a morning coffee or something..

To clear up some confusion about the lore:
All 3 EAS broadcasts occur during the Black Mesa Incident. The first 2 transmissions are an attempt to cover up the incident by evacuating people away from Black Mesa the third is the government acknowledging they can't cover this up anymore and they are at war.
They are however not at war with the combine yet. The seven hour takes place after Half-Life not during it. In Half-Life they are at war with Xen who are trying to invade. Once the Nihilanth dies, the portal storms continue which keeps spreading Xen wildlife across Earth and attracts the combine and at some point after Half-Life the seven hour war occurs.

It could be some sort of PMC attack and such, normally, people won't think it is aliens as no one really knows what is happening at Black Mesa if one is an outsider, thus, you can see why U.S. government in the game desperately wants to cover this up, as to prevent the public disorder and panic.

When you hear the third transmission from the radio of a shot up jeep in a tunnel leading to the lambda complex, this, together with the dead soldiers littered around, and the fact that not just the entire state, but the entire country is now in a state of emergency really instilled a feeling of "you should have been gone hours ago" and the guards and scientists who tried to escape by car, whose bodies you see in the gargantua chase sequence really made me think about how little the chances of survival were for the regular black mesa personnel caught right in the center of the single most deadly disaster in history.

Honestly getting rid of the Air Force's involvement in the cover up and instead having the New Mexico National Guard being the fourth group involved in handling the incident, was probably one of the best story changes they could've made, since in HL1 the Air Force had so little involvement in the story to were most people probably didn't even notice in Black Mesa the Air Force's F-16 Fighting Falcons were replaced with the Marine Corps' AV-8B Harriers, and the ones who did probably didn't even care, hell in HL1 the role of the vehicle that bombs the Gargantua was probably going to be done by the cut F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Bomber, all the F-16's did was fly over a canyon and I believe bomb some Alien Grunts, they never even attack you, now compare that to the US Army's role in HL1, which while small, it is still memorable, first encounter, they try to gun your ass down with an AH-64 Apache, second encounter you are trying to cross a minefield, they come after you with another AH-64, hell most people probably didn't realize the fighter jets in HL1 weren't from the same branch as the H.E.C.U, that's how little importance they even had.

At first the incident, then cute aliens and zombies, crazy military, bigger aliens, full-fledged retreat of the army, bombardment, and what a conclusion with the reimagination of Xen. A masterpiece!

Though arguably something that seriously puts a hole in that from the beginning of Black Mesa is the tram's announcer announcing the weather topside, "Current topside temperature is 93 degrees, with an estimated high of 105."
I lived in southwestern Arizona for many years of my life, and I know for certain that the temperature in the desert in the month of May isn't gonna be a high of 105.

In 2020 I was alone in the house, and I happened to be in my room, playing this out loud on my phone as I sat on my bed when my dad came home. I decided to prank him by starting the video at the first EAS broadcast just as he walked by my room.
I will never forget his reaction. He immediately came in, said "What's going on?" and listened as the announcer described at whatever-AM Mountain Time, "a disaster of unknown type" occurred and the government was ordering the evacuation of everyone in a 75 mile radius. He said out loud "75 miles?! I gotta call Gram", and pulled out his cellphone. For context, "Gram" is my grandma who lives relatively near that area.
I realized this little joke was rapidly getting out of hand and paused the video and explained it was a fictional recording from a videogame. He looked both surprised and relieved, and all I could say was "Sorry. That wasn't meant to freak you out."
I consider that little moment to be a twisted sort of compliment to Crowbar Collective and their amazing product.

The alerts and their corresponding situations in Black Mesa and surrounding areas in New Mexico (some details of which are my guesses):
Alert 1: At the beginning of Office Complex, which takes place in the early afternoon of the first day, about 2-4 hours after the resonance cascade. Black Mesa has sustained catastrophic damage all over, power failure, electrical wires falling and causing shocks, toxic radioactive leaks, and fires from flammable material, pretty much everything turned lethal; this causes a lot of death already. In addition, the lower-tier Xen wildlife (Headcrabs, Houndeyes, etc.) fall through the newly opened dimensional rift and are openly hostile toward anyone they see; this causes even more death on top of that caused by the hazards in the facility. Survivors like Eli Vance and Gordon Freeman are desperately trying to get to the surface to warn the world about the true scope of the disaster. Meanwhile, the entire desert of New Mexico, having lost all electricity, is in a sudden state of panic and confusion. What probably happened was that a large shockwave at the moment of the resonance cascade (9:47 AM) violently shook a 60-100 mile radius around Black Mesa, snapping the electricity lines severely. However, so far, no Xen aliens have appeared out in the desert yet, the dimensional rift yet beginning to widen. The local authorities, tracing the origin to Black Mesa, deduct that a life-threatening incident has unfolded and issue the immediate evacuation order for civilians in a 75-mile radius. Already warned by the shockwave and power failure, most civilians comply, some even gathering supplies quickly and rushing out in a panic.
Alert 2: At the beginning of Blast Pit, around sunset on the first day (8:00 PM, if the date of May 16, 200-, is correct). Over the course of the afternoon, the situation in Black Mesa and the New Mexico desert deteriorates. The dimensional rift worsens, and in addition to the lower tier Xen wildlife, bigger Xen wildlife (like Bullsquids and Tentacles) and some Xen military (like Vortigaunts and Gargantuas) appear in Black Mesa. By evening, the first signs of Xen wildlife appear in the New Mexico desert, causing a nightmare for those still not evacuated by scaring them with the sudden portals and killing the unfortunate ones. Reports of loss of body control (caused by Headcrabs), internal bleeding (caused by Houndeyes), acid (caused by Bullsquids), and shocks and burns (caused by Vortigaunts) start coming in. It is around this time that the Nihilanth notices the dimensional rift and begins organizing a powerful army of Vortigaunts, Alien Grunts, Manta Rays, and Gargantuas hoping to launch a full-scale invasion (which comes true the next day, in Questionable Ethics and Surface Tension). The state department of New Mexico, informed of the disaster at Black Mesa and receiving reports of possible alien involvement, tries to cover up knowledge about the disaster (maybe it was one of the primary sources that funded research at Black Mesa?). The state department extends the evacuation zone to a 150-mile radius and talks about symptoms of a possible outbreak of radiation sickness, further scaring evacuating civilians. The military dispatched to Black Mesa are given orders to cover up the incident by eliminating science personnel that survived the initial disaster.
Alert 3: At the climax of Surface Tension, late in the afternoon of the second day. Now Black Mesa is a brutal war zone such as never been seen before. The Xen army put together by the Nihilanth successfully launches their full-scale assault on Black Mesa, completely overwhelming the human forces. At this point, the number of Black Mesa scientists and security guards still alive is about 1/10 to 1/20 of their number before the disaster, and they are desperately trying to survive. The military has a majority of its soldiers brutally wounded or killed in agonizing pain. As the fierce battle is hopeless for them, they start to make a hasty exit from Black Mesa, leaving many of their own soldiers behind. As for the New Mexico desert, the now-abundant Xen creatures are freely roaming open regions of the desert up to a 30-40 mile radius from Black Mesa. It is now impossible to hide what is really happening from the public, the whole North American population is watching the events, and the US president and the national government take command over the battle. The US president quickly orders a barrage of airstrikes all around Black Mesa. I also think the US government (possibly spurred by the G-Man) authorized the Black Ops to infiltrate Black Mesa to eventually nuke the facility in a last ditch effort to contain the alien invasion.
Details like these emergency broadcasts make this one of my favorite games of all time. If they remake Opposing Force, I hope they continue doing these emergency alerts. In Opposing Force, the situation gets even worse.

I like how you say "For Area 51" like that's at all unique. They have one for every military base in the US, Area 51 just happens to be, well, a military base in the US.
The idea is that if nuclear bombs get dropped or whatever, they have the pre-recorded names of every military base and major city they can add to be read off on the list of what got hit. It's not like they have a full "Area 51 has fallen" script or whatever.

I had commented on another video how quickly things escalated in Black Mesa. It took 72 hours for the whole thing to go from bad to FUBAR in a hurry. Which ultimately in my opinion lead to the total destruction of the US by the Combine and Xen forces.
I have read comments about how people were confused by the need for marines and the black ops forces to "clean" the site. The reason these forces were sent in was to prevent information leaks to the public as Black Mesa is a top secret facility and a military controlled facility like Area 51. There is a surprising amount of Xen technology in Black Mesa Gordon can find while playing and that information leaking to the world will raise some unwanted questions and attention.
So when the resonance cascade went down; the first wave of soldiers on the ground were to prevent information leaks; they aren't the real deal and weren't prepared for the horrors to come crawling out of Xen.
So in a sense Gordon wasn't fighting Shepherd and his task force; who are basically third wave marines; he was fighting scouts and security forces; which means he actually had it relatively easy. (You will notice during the whole play through Gordon never once finds a S.A.W. and weapons like shepherd has.)
The third wave troops were sent in to try to kill Gordon and any last forces of resistance or marines who saw too much or knew too much and we're trying to flee; but by then the nihilanth had the door open and there was no stopping his army from pouring through. If the main army had arrived first; they might have stood a chance against the Xen forces; at least long enough to close the portals if they could interrogate enough scientists. But because Gordon was killing so many marines; security was fighting back and the aliens virtually overrun the facility; the first and second waves stood zero chance; so the third wave came in on a crumbling house of cards.
What makes the whole ordeal so much more frightening is that the government was unaware that the whole time during the fighting: they had the answers to mostly halt the Xen invasion right in front of them.
Gordon launched a rocket containing a satellite that could regain control of the resonance cascade for a short period; but because of military interference, the Nihilanth had time to grab and hold the portals open; which is why Gordon had to go to Lambda sector to go into Xen and close it from inside Xen.
Shepherd and his people could have very well contained the outbreak; but the response to the situation was so poor that once he was on scene with his teams; it was a losing fight and Shepherd knew it was FUBAR trying; which is why Black Ops tried to turn on him.
So during the final hours of the Resonance Cascade; Freeman would be taking the fight alone, while the world he knew was falling apart.
That is in a sense why the marines and black ops got sent in; they had woefully underestimated the threat they faced and made the grave mistake of not only killing the science teams BEFORE they could stop the cascade, but sending in woefully under prepared and under equipped soldiers to a fight they needed much more serious firepower for.

    • @piefish
      @piefish  3 года назад +4

I think the first wave were prepared for Xen wildlife, they seemed to be handling it relatively fine until the more serious Xen military troops turned up and then it became a shitshow. The HECU seemed to be well aware that they'd be fighting "monsters" but they weren't prepared for an organised military to be literally spawning in. The first wave were definitely sent in just to keep anything from getting to the public though, second wave when more and more wildlife kept spawning in, third wave when the Xen military show up and overwhelm HECU.
Of course this is just fan speculation so it could be the entirety of the HECU turned up straight away and just overtime they lost their grip on the situation.

    • @starlightdragon2665
      @starlightdragon2665 3 года назад

@@piefish I think so to; again saying that they weren't prepared for the magnitude of the alien incursions.
Shepherd wasn't inserted in during the first waves; he came in when the Xen forces were tearing the place apart. Meaning either he didn't know it was that bad and neither did the third wave; or they knew it was bad, but they didn't know it was as bad as it was.
In Blue Shift you actually see many of the first wave HECU arriving by train and they were bringing tanks in with them (which the Bradley IFVs were replaced by eight wheeled Stryker type LAVs). Suggesting to some degree they anticipated meeting something; just not to the extent of what Gordon and co witnessed.
