Just for the record to all the ignorant fools who still think the prius has a CVT ala vespa scooter.. Do yourself a favour and Google the Toyota HSD. It's 2 motors, one engine, planetary gear set. That's why it last for miles and miles and gives good efficiency. Nothing to break engine can work at its best efficiency to create charge via one motor to power the other one or direct drive the car. Ford also uses the same set up in their hybrids.
Toyota is hated around the world because of the dealerships who cut corners and some fxxxked up marketing decisions with different models to offer among countries. I choose Ioniq because local dealer simply don't import Prius but pushing the CHR & CT200h instead
I like the gear shifter on the Prius. It's like an old arcade video game joystick and it always pops back to center. It's also closer to the hand than the traditional style. The two things I hate about the Prius is the design of its back end (looks like a Pi symbol) and the seat belts. The Prius seat belts lock up at low speeds and mild turns in parking lots - that really sucks.
Jesus F. Quality? Interior looks,,, meh. Exterior looks like a kiddie spaceship and cheap plastic. Never liked the front. The back, just acceptable until redesigned for this year. Now it looks weird.
I have test driven all three vehicles and my conclusion is totally different than yours.. I love toyota but the prius is not defined as the hyundai ioniq. The hyundai ioniq has a life time battery warranty replacement with a much better interior and seats. The look and quality of the exterior and interior is higher quality than the prius. The handling and driving quality is better on the ionqi. I strongly recommend each person who is looking for a hybrid to go test drive each vehicle. You are wrong on this match up.... I still like your reviews and will continue to watch...
I like the Prius actually, it's different which isn't a bad thing. I have also driven the Prius and the Ioniq and they both pretty decent. The Toyota feels more comfortable and NVH levels are much lower than the Hyundai. Though I agree it has a infotainment system that feels like using an aftermarket system from 5 year's ago. The Hyundai's is great and has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Great review, Mat. Just one thing I wanted to point out. You compared the fuel economy of a Hyundai Ioniq with 17'' wheels and a Toyota Prius with 15'' wheels, which is not very conclusive in my opinion. They both have the option of either 15'' or 17''. It would be interesting to compare with the same set of wheels.
In December 2016, the Niro officially received a Guinness World Records title for the lowest fuel consumption by a hybrid vehicle, as it traveled from Los Angeles to New York City with a fuel consumption record of 76.6 mpg. I’m not sure how you’re testing these cars Matt!
Just catching up with this out of interest before picking up our Tucson Hybrid N Line S this week. We’ve been really pleased with our Ioniq Premium. Like you,we’ve had brilliant mpg. On the way back from Peak District this week we were getting 77 mpg. So unless your towing or have a motor home forget stinky diesel
I like the way the Prius looks. It's not boring like most cars. It's purposeful. But not with those wheels. They're like £9.99 plastic trims from a backstreet car accessory shop.
Prius haters are insecure wierdos, the prius is a tank....it is a car that can easily get 500k miles with care, while performing at at least 50mpg before hypermiling
Many people, including Mat, have highlighted the fact that the Prius looks like a pig in knickers. As yourselves this, though. How often do you actually view the exterior of your car? I look at the exterior of mine when I walk towards it in order to drive it. I also look at it when I am cleaning it. Other than that I don't see the exterior because I'm on the inside. For me, the most important part of a vehicle's styling is the interior: not the exterior. I do, however, draw the line at the pre- 2018 versions of the Nisan Leaf.
As an alternative hybrid family car I really like the RAV4..or auris if you want something smaller. I know Toyota's not fun, but if reliability is your main buying point like me...then I always go for Toyota for peace of mind.
In US, Hyundai Ioniq beats Toyota Prius in EPA MPG but Prius gets 10+ mpg in real life driving. I guess they didn't learn their lesson from MPG lawsuit they had couple years back.
There's also the Prius Prime, which looks much better! Especially at the rear, with its lip-shaped tail lights and the overall double-bubble Kamm-shaped tail!!
I have one..80 miles to the GALLON .U must be driving very skow.the most I have ever gotten on mine is 60 ,which is fantastic. Didn't buy it for looks.bought it for practicality and fuel savings.i love it.
Couldn't agree more. However, don't criticize black plastic any more.. 99.9% of the cars are like that. Instead, compliment a bright one when you see it.
no reason to buy the Prius over the Ioniq or Niro. They're so much better in so many ways: both look so much better, have nicer cleaner interiors, don't have horrible cvt's, and are much cheaper.
azera55555 they all look shit. So buy the best. The e CVT is not horrible, it's there to save you fuel. Plus it's smooth as hell. Bet you think it's a belt driven CVT like every armchair expert out there...
TsLeng nah i completely disagree that the Ioniq and Niro look like shit too. They’re nicely styled and have clean well laid out interiors. The ecvt is not as responsive and feels disconnected compared to the regular automatics. The CVT is fine on its own and is smooth as you say but I’d prefer a regular auto
I own a 17 pruis and i have never once gotten the fuel mileage he was getting. The best i have gotten is maybe 55mpgs...i agree its not the best looking car, but i didnt buy it for looks, i bought it for practicality. No fill ups for at least 3 weeks...love it
Got to say the Prius is a better value for money specially when it comes to resale price look how much is a 2010 Prius is on auto trader.. It may not the prettiest but its for sure the most reliable!
I'll have to say this: Prius wins truly. It's the middle ground between these two. It has The best practicality and the best fuel economy. It just looks weird from the outside.
The pricing in the UK is interesting, as there's not much in it. Where as here, in New Zealand, the Niro is the cheapest, especially when compared to the Ioniq.....so I bought a Niro. 2019 Niro EX NZ$36,990 2019 Ioniq Entry NZ$46,990 Prius SX NZ$39,990. But you can get the Prius C form NZ$27,990.
having had the 3rd gen prius and the phev niro 3 i can say that the prius is very uncomfortable as the seat gave me a back ache but it beat the other cars in every other aspect better engine smoother drivetrain and almost double the fuel mpg
I quite like the look of the Niro. I'm not a crossover fan, but find this to be the prettiest of the 3. Also, I like the look of its interior. I don't like the Prius insides, and not the iconiq (a step backwards from the i40), however, I must add I've not seen the Niro in the flesh.
One question I have is that the onboard fuel computers can be ridiculously optimistic too. I wonder when you do a 'pump to pump' test, what the actual mpg is compared to the computer readouts.?
Having driven both the Prius and Ioniq (Niro was not available,) we bought the bottom trim, Prius Prime plug-in to go with our used, plug-in BMW i3-REx. These cars came with dynamic cruise control and automatic collision braking that is an extra cost on the Ioniq and requires the most expensive top trim. The Ioniq stepped gear transmission kept the engine busy cycling up and down seeking different gears with motion sick rocking versus the smoother Prius. As for efficiency, the Ioniq MPG gauge maximum is 99 MPG while the Prius goes to 199 MPG.
Do you know why the Kia Niro isn't a Top Safety Pick for IIHS? I've been trying to decide between the Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq. I like the amount of room for the 2nd passengers the Niro has. It seems like a great choice if I have kids one day and need to put in/remove car seats. However, the Ioniq is an IIHS Top Safety Pick for both 2017 & 2018. Additionally, Hyundai offers a lifetime warranty for the battery, which is one of the biggest longterm concerns for hybrid owners.
@@TopBoi93 so I ended up getting the Ioniq, mostly because they offered a lifetime warranty for the battery, as opposed to what Kia offered. Also, surprisingly, the Ioniq has a very spacious hatch, that actually held my dog's beds, and my luggage much better than what the Niro would have been able to hold. I've been EXTREMELY happy with my Ioniq. I think it's a solid choice!
I exactly came to these three alternatives while looking for a new car, however considering the PHEV versions of the Kia and Hyundai and given the price I will most likely buy the Hyundai now.
If you are buying a car to save fuel, you won't care about the looks really. I think toyota is bold and that mpg is more than enough reason to buy one over the korean sisters.
It's kind of funny because where I live in Canada the Prius is what cabbies drive. They are pretty rare otherwise. The Ionic and Niro aren't too common either. My wife and I have a 19 fully loaded Niro Hybrid . It's a great car with excellent ergonomics. The Prius will get better mileage, but it's so weird , the Kia is very nicely built with easy controls .
The Prius never was a good looking car, but the current model looks awful outside and inside... that designer probably needs glasses. Hyundai and Kia look great, I wouldn't mind owning either one...
To be fair, it has the lowest drag coeficient of all 3. To quote one random review whose author I dont remember:"So ugly, the air doesn't want to touch it".
I uber/lyft with a Prius. I get compliments on the car almost daily. What is this car? Is it new? Really nice ride. People love it. It's a Black 3rd Gen 2011 Prius 2 with 125K Miles
I had two Priuses 2010 and 2014, and no matter how hard I drove it returned 55mpg. Loved the car, it was cheap to run and service, very reliable and I would have bought another one, but for the new design which was not my cup of tea. Can't begin to imagine how many sales Toyota lost due to the new design.
HappyListener50 look, I'm not bothered you're just trying to make people mad and then call them "mad" or "triggered". Some people enjoy driving cars and spending money on it, just like some people buy sports equipment or collect things.Cars are a hobby too and if you just want a car for cheap reliable transportation just don't be some elitist and talk everyone down.
Why does this reviewer sound biased??? People actually do not like how Prius drives that's why Hyundai and Kia made theirs drive like normal cars... But reviewer likes that hybrid like driving on Prius which Hyundai deliberately did not want to mimic because of complaints from Prius owners.... I think this is the very first time a reviewer liked how Prius drives from all the reviews I have seen.. .. Lol...
Totally understand why the Prius wins the test. Best hybrid around. Prooven and longtime reliable, lowest fuel consumption of all cars, most roomy, in my eyes best because positive different looking car away from mainstream out on the market. More than enough and good reasons to buy one. I did it 3 years ago. Drove a Prius before and again after updating from number 3 to 4. Been there, done it and stay with it....
Given the price difference though, one should calculate how much they would save in gas driving each of them and determine if it is enough to warrant the increased price.
Great video as always! Would love to see the new Nissan Leaf vs VW e-Golf vs BMW i3 head2head & reviews. Would also be interesting to see you review other electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Keep up the good work!
The plastic on the Hyundai is for the safety packages, all cars that come equipped with forward collision warning have to have the plastic in the front
I felt in love with that kia,SUV looking but also very economical! And the Ioniq is also good, and looks the most beautifull! That Prius....eh...I will sacrifice 15-20mpg for the others just cause of the design.
The biggest source of confusion for me is simply WHY they had to make the Prius look they way it does. The previous one looked nice, the one before it looked bland and the one before that just looked like any other car. Why did they have to make it look so strange?
The toyota is one of the reasons why the petrol engine will stay with us because its engine efficiency was increased to a measured 40%. Pretty much that of a diesel! Hence non-hybrid petrols will be expected to follow suit - the smoothness of a petrol with diesel mpg is sure to be a winner for the next decade or so.
My current 2017 Prius has a top end of 115 MPH. My 300 HP V-6 Mustang computer shuts off the gas to the motor at 107 MPH. Yep, My Prius is faster than my Mustang.

I have one..80 miles to the GALLON .U must be driving very skow.the most I have ever gotten on mine is 60 ,which is fantastic. Didn't buy it for looks.bought it for practicality and fuel savings.i love it.
“The Prius looks like an angry fish”
Best analogy and so true 😂😂
Lol
If Toyota had nailed its design, it would have been almost perfect.
HappyListener50 to each their own but it seems a lot of people agree with me and think the Prius is extremely ugly
HappyListener50 You are right. Stands out as the most ugly vehicle out of the 3
I own a 17 pruis and i have never once gotten the fuel mileage he was getting. The best i have gotten is maybe 55mpgs...i agree its not the best looking car, but i didnt buy it for looks, i bought it for practicality. No fill ups for at least 3 weeks...love it
Do you live in the US? Imperial miles are shorter than American ones.
Yet another reason meters are the only reasonable measure of distance.
Got to say the Prius is a better value for money specially when it comes to resale price look how much is a 2010 Prius is on auto trader.. It may not the prettiest but its for sure the most reliable!
HALLELUJAH, someone who actually for once talks sense, only decent comment I've read, 33 years garage trade, Prius fantastic car well said that man
Do you drive a prius?
I love my Niro and I'm fine with the gas economy it has to offer
hyndai ioniq is the boss between these three
cheap, good to drive, better body kit that that suv and hatchback
I'll have to say this: Prius wins truly. It's the middle ground between these two. It has The best practicality and the best fuel economy. It just looks weird from the outside.
I love these Head2Head episodes..please make them more often!:)
You are literally doing the comparison for the decision I am making this month. Leaning toward Niro but we'll see!!
Like an angry haddock!!! Haha. Yes, the ionic is very pretty.
The Fiat Multipla is a thing of beauty, compared to the Prius.
blackjack2150 I disagree, Fiat Multipla is fucking hideous than a Prius
The pricing in the UK is interesting, as there's not much in it. Where as here, in New Zealand, the Niro is the cheapest, especially when compared to the Ioniq.....so I bought a Niro.
2019 Niro EX NZ$36,990
2019 Ioniq Entry NZ$46,990
Prius SX NZ$39,990. But you can get the Prius C form NZ$27,990.
The Kia looks pretty good in real life, I would pick the Hyundai though as the Toyota looks too weird
having had the 3rd gen prius and the phev niro 3 i can say that the prius is very uncomfortable as the seat gave me a back ache but it beat the other cars in every other aspect better engine smoother drivetrain and almost double the fuel mpg
if you get the plug in Hyundai Ioniq you get similar fuel reduction to the Prius without it looking like an angry Chinese man who's eaten a frog....
same thing for the plug-in version of the prius though...
Dave Travels yeah but it is too ugly and more expensive
Plug in Prius Prime looks doesn't look that bad. Step up from regular Prius.
STUPID CONCEPT
At least the Prius looks different to every other generic looking car on the road!!
Did you decide on a car? I'm literally in the same boat, looking at the Niro and Ioniq
@@MustachioFurioso9134 this is me now literally… what is the best one to go for?
@@TopBoi93 so I ended up getting the Ioniq, mostly because they offered a lifetime warranty for the battery, as opposed to what Kia offered. Also, surprisingly, the Ioniq has a very spacious hatch, that actually held my dog's beds, and my luggage much better than what the Niro would have been able to hold.
I've been EXTREMELY happy with my Ioniq. I think it's a solid choice!
@@MustachioFurioso9134 I appreciate the response. I want to use mine for uber, I heard the rear space for passengers in the ioniq is really tight?
I exactly came to these three alternatives while looking for a new car, however considering the PHEV versions of the Kia and Hyundai and given the price I will most likely buy the Hyundai now.
Good choice!
If you are buying a car to save fuel, you won't care about the looks really. I think toyota is bold and that mpg is more than enough reason to buy one over the korean sisters.
debrisbit I'm not looking for mpg, I look for looks, performance, reliability, not worse mpg
Khairy7 then quite clearly you are on the wrong video?
You will pay bit more for Prius but you will get that all back when you resale. Hyundai/Kia resale is just horrible.
jun park very true
Khairy7 so you will buy an ioniq? Rofl.
I love my Ioniq, it saves me fuel and she looks like a professionals car. The prius reminds me of a college student car.
Its a pleasure to watch and hear you. You are a polite charming competence. Thank you !
Every time he says high and die, I have to remind myself that he's talking about the hyundai
I uber/lyft with a Prius. I get compliments on the car almost daily.
What is this car? Is it new? Really nice ride. People love it.
It's a Black 3rd Gen 2011 Prius 2 with 125K Miles
HAHAHA but i love how the prius looks :(
Auto Top NL and carwow are the two best car channel imo
The best part about driving a Prius is you don't have to look at it :)
🤣🤣🤣
My judgment....prius for best economy
Kia for more comfort
And hayubdai for style
If you are into looks and performance this video is not for you
I had two Priuses 2010 and 2014, and no matter how hard I drove it returned 55mpg. Loved the car, it was cheap to run and service, very reliable and I would have bought another one, but for the new design which was not my cup of tea. Can't begin to imagine how many sales Toyota lost due to the new design.
Better than motortrends head2head
I go for Niro~~~
and then Ioniq with the modern look.
Prius driver here. I love the Prius. Prius was my first car. I think I’ll be driving a Prius the rest of my life. Someday I’ll move on to a Tesla.
No Filter You're boring then. Only losers drive hybrid or electric cars. Petrol and diesel are better in my opinion.
HappyListener50 jesus fucking christ trying too hard to troll
HappyListener50 look, I'm not bothered you're just trying to make people mad and then call them "mad" or "triggered".
Some people enjoy driving cars and spending money on it, just like some people buy sports equipment or collect things.Cars are a hobby too and if you just want a car for cheap reliable transportation just don't be some elitist and talk everyone down.
No Filter Better In What Way, Loser!?!?!?!?
Why does this reviewer sound biased??? People actually do not like how Prius drives that's why Hyundai and Kia made theirs drive like normal cars... But reviewer likes that hybrid like driving on Prius which Hyundai deliberately did not want to mimic because of complaints from Prius owners.... I think this is the very first time a reviewer liked how Prius drives from all the reviews I have seen.. .. Lol...
Kia for me
Jarno veenstra fuck those three, the grey audi on your profile picture is a million times better
Thuarakan SJY eeey thats ma guy🤘😂
Totally understand why the Prius wins the test. Best hybrid around.
Prooven and longtime reliable, lowest fuel consumption of all cars, most roomy, in my eyes best because positive different looking car away from mainstream out on the market. More than enough and good reasons to buy one. I did it 3 years ago. Drove a Prius before and again after updating from number 3 to 4. Been there, done it and stay with it....
Toyota is the most technologically advanced and for me that works just fine.
Given the price difference though, one should calculate how much they would save in gas driving each of them and determine if it is enough to warrant the increased price.
Then or now? Any of these cars makes a lot of sense in 2022
Toyota Pryus “like an angry 😤 fish 🐠 “...you got that right Matt 😂😂😂
I like the Prius styling. Best design ever? Hardly. No way. But at least it's different. Most other cars look the same.
The Prius is worth it. I just bought one and love it
How much did you pay? Used or new?
I like the fact that he reviews budget cars and high end cars
Looks like the Prius just got out Prius-ed. Twice.
If you look inside a Prius, the gear shifter looks like a penis
All three cars are really good. Better than you think.
Your better off walking than drive the Prius😂
Why? With a Prius you hardly see the inside of a garage. The others are very reliable too.
Tom van Leeuwen because he is a car guy, and the prius model is too weird
Khairy7 Indeed, I have a Prius Model3 (2010). Very happy with it, comfortable, reliable. But if I would need a new one, I'll go for the Ionic.
When was the last time you walked throug a desert or snow storm?
Says the guy who can't afford one.
I felt in love with that kia,SUV looking but also very economical! And the Ioniq is also good, and looks the most beautifull!
That Prius....eh...I will sacrifice 15-20mpg for the others just cause of the design.
The prius looks the way it looks because the exterior was designed for the lowest drag possible. It helps eek out the most miles per gallon.
Yet the Ioniq achieves a lower Cd (0.24 to Prius's 0.25), and was still capable of looking normal.
@@deeya Normal, but also a bit boring :P Still a great car tho, and it seems like Hyundai's quality have improved a lot during the last years :)
The biggest source of confusion for me is simply WHY they had to make the Prius look they way it does. The previous one looked nice, the one before it looked bland and the one before that just looked like any other car. Why did they have to make it look so strange?
Matt please review the 2019 Toyota Prius.
The Prius is crappy. The design is worse than a witch's face.
It's not crappy, but design (especially the white parts inside) is indeed not everybody's cup of tea, mine included.
If you look inside a Prius, the gear shifter looks like a penis
Really? I'm using that gear shifter (well, no gear shifter actually) for years and it never crossed my mind. Must be in your mind.
Thorbjørn Madsen yup correct 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i like the look of the prius c but the c sucks
The video quality was spot on!
I would like to see real mpg on Ioniq with 15" wheels
Hyundai's front badge is for laser sensor
Am I the only one that likes practicality over looks? I like the Toyota Prius! 80 mpg!? Just how!?
Prius is the best looking car out there. I have no idea what are you whining about..
