Benkei and Goemon are popular historical figures.
    - Musashibou Benkei being a warrior monk who is most commonly known for Benkei holding the bridge leading to his Lord's castle against more than 500 soldiers, killing over 300, and then died standing up as arrows rained down upon him. The demon warrior still held the bridge.
    - Goemon Ishikawa is basically Japanese Robin Hood, steal from the rich, give to the poor. He was caught and was boiled alive with his family in a giant pot as punishment, some say he held up his son above his head to save him or drowned him quickly and held his body up in defiance to his captors. Kozuki Oden's fate in One Piece is a reference to this story.

The plot of Alien Challenge (which shows up if you let the attract mode run) is in broken English so I can't say for certain, but the idea seems to be that the eight characters are "gods" who "annoyed" the rulers of the "Celestial World" and were expelled to "discipline themselves" in the human world. I'm pretty sure "Alien" is either a bad translation of "Celestial" or (more likely) was chosen to sound cooler.
Also the bald dude is literally Wong Fei-hung (the kung-fu folk hero that Jet Li played in the "Once Upon a Time in China" movies) and the woman in pink armor is literally Hua Mulan, who as we all know defeated the Huns with the power of her boobs.

If you need the Fairy Tail deep lore:
Lucy Heartfilia is a summoner who uses "celestial keys" to summon celestial spirits (aka sexy cow man Taurus and horse archer guy Sagittaurius) from a celestial plane of existence. She seeks out these keys to collect and add to her arsenal, either as items to buy or rewards to collect, and each have their own distinct personalities and relationships with Lucy. She's pretty much just a normal girl otherwise.
And that's your Fairy Tail deep lore of the decade.

As a massive Fairy Tail fan:
    - Lucy Heartfillia, the main girl of the series (One of Cherami Leigh's biggest character's that isn't Sword Art's Asuna, Cyberpunk's V or SF6's Manon).
    - She's a Summoner type, which means she has a contract with certain spirits, and fight for her like Pokémon' Digimon or Yu-Gi-Oh!. The biggest ones are the ones based on the Horoscope. Seen in the game, Sagittarius (Archer in horse costume) Taurus (Cow man, who's always playfully hitting on Lucy in someway).
    - Besides that Lucy as a "Fleuve d'étoiles" whip, from celestial world, and can extend and has magical energy capabilities.
    - Lastly, she has her signature "Lucy kick!", which is just a normal kick used as a recurring joke, but it gets the job done.
Not gonna go on too much because it's not that necessary, and I could keep going if not stopped.

Here's one for you, Shadow Fighter, made by NAPS Team for the Amiga, considered one of its better (non-AGA) fighting games. See how few mechanics and too many references there are in a surprisingly well-animated fighter designed around the 1-button joystick. Also probably runs too fast at 60Hz, a problem that plagued their next game, Gekido on the PS1. You can even see billboards for Shadow Fighter in Gekido.

Did you ever consider playing Blade Strangers? That's the fighting game with characters from indie series like Isaac, Cave Story, and Shovel Knight. I never played it, but I was curious how it played.

Did anyone notice the background music in the Chinese martial artist stage is from or based on the theme from Once upon a time in China and the character is based on that movie.

I actually downloaded and ironically enjoy Blandia in spite of its slightly primitive clunkiness. The repeat music tracks are a bit off putting but i legit dig the sprites, throw animations and uh....dialogue. Big props to actually completing it in this silly sweet compilation.

So Matt, you being a beat em up enthusiast, have you ever heard of game called Demolish Fist? It’s from Dimp, one of their first games before Rumble Fish, it looks pretty hype and might be right up your alley

I've known Sunday VS Magazine before but I never actually saw its gameplay until now.
It actually looks so good and simple. But too simple. Was there some kind of longer combos or that's just it?

  • @sonicsaiyan07

Shounen Jump is Japan's equivalent to DC while Shounen Sunday and Magazine are like the equivalents to Marvel and Image, though in the case of Sunday vs. Magazine it may be more Image vs. Whoever the hell the 4th place comic company is (IDW maybe?).
