Something that minecraft is sorely lacking in is life. Without the default creatures a world feels completely barren. Even with the creatures the world feels pretty static, adding some atmospheric "mobs" (they don't have to be actual intractable entities) would really bring this game to life.
Shame we're not going to see fireflies or some more dynamic biomes.

    • @remor698
      @remor698 2 года назад +138

Despite the fact I have never cared about the birch forest stuff, I find it pretty absurd that they went to all the trouble of making a big deal of it and then just never did. Yes, yes, it's better to have polished, cohesive content than rushed content, but if literally every update is announced and then promises are backpedaled on and/or pushed off to the next update, what's even the point? At this point, they may as well just be honest and call this update "Caves and Cliffs Part 3". It's their responsibility to stop making promises if they don't have any intention to keep them.

And it paid off too, with one of the bests updates to game in several years.
However this just feels like they wanted to do an update focused on the deep dark (which I still think needs some work) but felt it wasn’t enough for a major update and threw in a couple other things. With a title like the “Wild Update” two biomes and scary boss mob doesn’t cut it. They didn’t even need to do much, just add a few things to some of the existing biomes to spice them up and bring them into the present. I noticed this a lot with the new mountain generation- sure, the mountains look great, but the lackluster biomes around them really drain the life out of it. I love mojang, but I really hope this doesn't become a trend. The pandemic may have affected them behind the scenes, but it really feels like they keep biting off more than they can chew. First they had to split Cave and Cliffs, then the Deep Dark got delayed, bundles and archeology got put back on the shelf for a variety of reasons, and now they canceled parts of the next update. Some of the parts that gave it the name of "the wild update"
I can understand not wanting frogs to eat fireflies. I mean, I don't think living magma would be safer for them to eat, but it's less realistic. Trying to make it work like parrots and cookies wouldn't work when the frogs were eating them on their own. But surely they could have left them in for ambiance like bats?
And there was quite a bit of the livestream where they were talking about how beautiful the birch forests will be, just to say they never committed to it. In my opinion the new mangrove swamp biome is pretty cool, but really underwhelming at the same time. I love the new mangrove wood and mud blocks though! Those are probably the best things in this update, next to all the Sculk and Warden stuff.
Yet it is just super underwhelming to see the actual swamp biome being untouched. I expected from the start that they wouldn't update the birch forest as it was only concept art at MC Live, though the swamp biome was promised to get the new fireflies at least.
I'm not too upset that they won't include the fireflies this update though, as I think their early prototype was really lacking (btw the "it's just 2 pixels!!" argument is pretty dumb. Mojang is really careful to not add useless stuff just for the sake of it. Which is why they cancelled them in the first place).
I am really sad however, that they didn't add or change a single thing in the original swamp biome.
And the whole ambiance enhancements they promised completely fell flat. The mangrove swamp is ironically really lackluster in that sense, it barely has any life to it (things like different sky colours/tints could easily at a lot of ambiance to different biomes. Just like water colours)

Even though they don’t want to add fireflies for frog food, there are a thousand other things that they can be put in the game for. The concept of fireflies isn’t a recent discussion, it’s been on some players’ minds (like mine) for years before they teased it on the live. I’ve seen some really cool ideas for fireflies that aren’t even just for ambience.

@@remor698 I do understand that designing for Minecraft is a much more difficult task than many of us realize but even with that said. This whole "our standards of quality are incredibly high" sharade they've been putting on is getting ridiculous.
You can't tell me the recovery compass wasn't thought out and made within a couple days.
Why add the compass. One approach is, accessibility. So why lock it behind the latest game content where at which point you'll be geared and experiencend enough where dying is not a huge issue. Approach number 2 is that it serves to remedy trying to find your items in the deep dark. This makes more sense but even then the compass has no way to indicate height and for it to be useful at all it'll have to be sitting in a chest next to your bed or in an ender chest. Why did they feel the need to add this when there's years of promised content still waiting.
In alot of ways it feels like Minecraft in a design aspect is at a breaking point.

    • @remor698

@@dice.s8133 Minecraft's design process is an interesting one to begin with, because I am getting the feeling, that the devs are working on the basis of a category error. They are designing Minecraft as a sandboxy adventure game, but roughly everything I see the playerbase do is treating the game as just a sandbox, letting the survival aspects work at most like a minor inconvenience for them. That is why, at least from what I can tell, most updates lose their intruige after a week or so, whereas something like 1.18, where the actual sandbox space got increased dramatically, is still getting people inspired with new ideas.
Plus, if you were to try playing Minecraft as just an adventure game, you'd find the game severely lacking on almost all fronts. Cheese is the norm, build diversity does not exist and pve combat is very straightforward and therefore pretty bland.
I've found, that the thing, that keeps Minecraft alive isn't Mojang. It is the game's community and what they create with the game as just a foundation. The best way for Mojang to ensure this activity persists or even increases would be by not focussing so much on creating their own vision of the world, but support the community with the means to make the world theirs, as that is what the community has been doing since the very beginning.
The optimal state of affairs, I think, would be for mods to be put on the same level as the current world of Minecraft itself, same level of accessibility, same means of working on them. Mojang can still do their thing with that world, but their every decision wouldn't be imposed on every player and creator of Minecraft content, like is the case right now. Their main job, however, should be to make the basic foundation, everybody would be working with, as stable and solid as possible, meaning a lot less effort would need to be spent on keeping mods up to date.
It's an unreasonably drastic change, I think, but it is a direction, that would suit Minecraft much better than the one it is headed in right now.

An update with the name the "wild" update should do more then just add one biome and a new structure, it should be the overworld update that makes all biomes interesting again. Mojang did a good job of making the cave biomes interesting, they revamped the taiga biome and the mountain biomes very well, I was hoping they would extend this but no. Unpopular Opinion:
To be honest, I think this update wiill be a disapointment, the wild update just does not include close to what a wild update should include. And this is a Problem all updates since aquatic had.
Overall, I think Updates should expand the survival gameplay and make it more fun to play or add content to it.
    1.13 Update Aquatic:
Even through the ocean looks way better than before, there is not really a reason to go there 99% of the loot table in the ocean is not exclusive to it and a lot of times easier to get in other places, just the heart of the sea is unique. But to be honest, I can not remember building a conduit once since the update. But hey, we got sea pickles.
    1.14 Village and Pillage:
The goal was to make villages more pretty ant to remake the trading as well as the behavior system of villagers and the update did what it promised. I think it was the second best one of these 4 major updates 1.13, 1.14, 1.16 and 1.17/18. We got a lot of new interactive blocks like the stone cutter or the smiting table which is great but in terms of the villagers I see a lot of wasted potential in terms of behavior as well as Warden like animations when they do their work. I am talking about actual fishing fisherman as well as smiting blacksmiths. The new designs of the houses are fine, but could be more fitting in size as well as to the individual profession they were made for. We also do not talk about the generation of some village inside mountains with bad road connection, making the whole village unrealistic and not good dlooking.
Skipping Buzzy Bees, for obvious reasons, could have been used for increasing the performance on java as well if doable.
    1.16 The Nether Update:
Somewhat a repetition of the Aquatic update. First, the nether looks a lot better tan before the update, and we even got a new type of armor and tools which is mega great! But no new bosses, the Fortress still looks bad and generates horrible, and a new kind of mob that can be used to trade with which is especially useful in speed running. But theyyy live in ugly black boxes with a few exclusive items that are just sometimes worth visiting these bastions (wasted potential). Also, Nether portal Synchronizations still has to be done with a calculator. But hey we got Striders, which I saw being used in Dreams manhunts, guess that's the only reason for their existence.
And finally, the Cave and Cliffs update 1.17/18:
When I saw the first announcement trailer, I was expecting Minecraft caves to turn into 3d Terraria caves and I could swear I was not the only one, as well as better terrain generation. The terrain generation is fine, it looks better than ever the only problem I still face is the generation of micro biomes, not as small as they used to be at first but still too small to be considered normal size. So here comes the underground. We got huge caves offering massive potential as I said potential that could ave been used for 3d Terraria content. But the final snapshots arrived, and the massive caves just stayed empty. The ore generation made the walls even more flat because less ore kinds show up at different highs. Again, so much potential for cave biomes: Ice, sand, lava, whatever. We got the lush caves, yes, and I say that's the best part about the caves and the only place that is not boring but interesting to explore The wide variety of new block also offered a huge amount of uses for landscaping and decorating for the builders, so why did we just get one. I could go on with no new ores and I mean really new ones not just deep slate redesigns and no new bosses. Dungeons as well as mine shafts which got some changes stayed the same for the most part. Spoiler the are ugly as well.
Overall, I feel like the devs got cool ideas for updates, but halfway through they lose interest in them and just releasing the update half way finished. They promised us archeologies 1.17 then said it is in 1.18 than its in 1.19, and now we are reaching the bug fix snapshots for 1.19, and it is still not there. If they release the WILD update as it is right now with close to 0 changes except one new extremely rare biome with all others untouched, it will by far be the worst recent update.
There are so many talented players in the minecraft community, I would appreciate mojang to use that creativity to make Minecraft the best game in can be.
Thank u for reading my comment,
may be share your opinion on how you feel about these updates with me
    I would definitely be interested.

Tldr: Love where Minecraft is going. Update older biomes before adding new ones. Improve structures like dungeons. Stop showing concept art if it's not going to be added.
I love the way Mojang are taking the game as of the recent years, they're listening to the community more and brining us brilliant updates.
But it annoys me that we have out-dated biomes and structures in the games such as deserts and dungeons. They need to stop adding new biomes and new structures until they re-vamp the old ones imo.
Love the deep dark, love the new swamp biome but Minecraft dungeons are very out-dated. They should have changed them in the caves and cliffs update and why they didn't is beyond me tbh. How can you update caves and not dungeons when they go hand in hand? Dungeons of varying difficulty would have been amazing along side the deep dark and the warden. Dungeons arent really dungeons, you see one, kill a few mobs, light it up and get a saddle and a bit of iron. They don't have a purpose. Early game XP farms sure but they're not really dungeons imo.
Deserts and birch forests and many other biomes are crying out to be updated. Deserts could have oasis that spawn and have cool mobs, sand storms, proper desert temples and pyramids etc. Why are they adding new biomes into the game when there are biomes there that could be updated and improve the game just as much if not more than new biomes? Don't get me wrong I love the new swamp biome but it's disappointing to see older biomes get the short end of the stick.
It's also really disappointing when they show concept art and get hype up in the community just to pull it from under us. Fire flys were going to be one of those small features yes but would have improved the ambience to the nth degree! To me they're primary function was ambience and secondary was that frogs eat them. Just because frogs can't eat them why remove them? What sense does that make? Parrots can't eat cookies but they didn't remove cookies or parrots. Double standards by Mojang.

I feel like ever since Minecraft became popular again back in 2019, they have tried to keep the community excited. But later they realized the things they announced were easier said than done. Take Caves and Cliffs. Initially there was going to be archeology and the deep dark, and so many other cool stuff, but they ended up overcomplicating on terrain, world height, and some more stuff. Making the update better (or at least that what they thought). In their video about the update split, the Mojang team vented about being too difficult and stressful to get these features working in the game, and the pressure on the community didn't help. They needed some time. Not like this hadn't happened before, although in times where Minecraft was kind of dead. The update was well received, the very best for some even! Still, many things were left out or delayed in Caves and Cliffs. Let's go back to Minecraft Live 2021. They tried to build up the hype again with the Wild Update. Massive atmospheric features, biome revamps and of course, fireflies! But apparently they only got to put half of it on the final cut. Hyped features are disproportionate to the time to add them, which led to disappointment in many of us. Maybe they are stressed and pressured just like a year ago. Maybe it's just pure laziness and fake promises. Either way, I hope they overcome it and make the Wild Update we all waited for. With better organization, help from others, or just a little more... time.
Anyway, that's my opinion. Thank you for reading!
