13:38 Why would you save the file as Text and change the extension to CSV instead of just saving as CSV? Your method will likely result in some problems when importing into Excel if the metadata field content contains quotes or commas. Exporting to CSV will ensure that a field containing a comma is enclosed in quotes, or that a quote in the content is double quoted so it is imported correctly.

Ah! Ok. now we're on the same page. -- I went back and did the export both ways. When I did the .CSV export, the result in Excel was one long line with the various records all run together. You're right, a comma in, say, the caption or the keywords will cause that particular field to break in parts, making the fields jumble, at least in that particular record. I tried escaping just the field with the comma in it with quotes. That didn't work. I frankly don't know why. But it didn't.
I looked at the text-exported files and noticed that it had tabs between the records. So I tried adding tabs to the csv-exported file. That didn't work. Then I tried adding line feeds (
). No joy there either. However, you CAN reformat the file in Excel, as per this short video. ruclips.net/video/URoTwVtp-AE/видео.html So, that's probably the best bet: export as a .CSV and then reformat in Excel.
Thanks for pointing this out. I'll pin your comment so others will see it.

@carlseibert9015 I’m a software engineer. The CSV format is quite complex (and slow) to parse, and is not well standardized. One rarely sees tabs within record-oriented data so I try and use tab-separated format whenever I can. It’s unfortunate that’s not an option here. I’m not surprised that adding your own tabs didn’t work to the fields didn’t work. The software likely trims trailing whitespace. Glad to be of help!

Hi Carl... It's 2024 buddy and just letting you know that your video is awesome and you made this tutorial totally great that it makes sense although difference versions between the two of us but the settings are initially the same and I was able to change some things to fit my needs. I wonder if FTP works here that's ALL I need for quick uploading straight frm the app vs dragging to my server window that uploads the images to the server folder.

Hi Tony, Thanks for being a viewer! XnView doesn't have an uploder or built-In FTP client. It does play nicely with drag-and-drop to an FTP client (I use Filezilla. I tested on my PC, because that's what I'm using at the moment, but I know it works on my Mac, too.) I don't now whether that's any help, since you can do drag and drop uploading straight to your server. Photo Mechanic costs more that XnView (infinitely more, if you're using the free version of XnView) but it's got a ton more functionality (or maybe I should say "professional-oriented functionality"). It does FTP and SFTP, as well as uploading to a bunch of file storage and photo display sites.

Many thanks to viewer Jim Worrall for pointing out that the old version of this video was corrupted!! (Apparently, I managed to upload the wrong sequence.) Since on RUclips one has to make a new video altogether, rather than simply upload a replacement, I've copied and pasted Jim's comment over to this version as another of my own comments.

Thank you! This is an extremely helpful video with lots of details and advice on manipulating and viewing metadata in XnView. This stuff doesn't seem to be documented anywhere else. The video is long and it seems intended edits were not made, and the last 6 minutes the video is frozen. But for me it was well worth the hour.

      Holy Something's-wrong-right-Batman!!!.
Thank you ever so much for telling me. Best I can tell, I must have exported the wrong sequence out of Premiere and then switched my brain totally off to upload an hour of severely messed up video instead of the real Part 2, which, by the way, is only 16 minutes and change long.
I'm humbled that you invested an hour working through this. The new Part 2 is here: ruclips.net/video/HoOpZo8aqLg/видео.html
Since it's not possible to replace a video on RUclips, I'll cut and paste your comment to the new video.

Thanks Carl. I watched the whole thing because I found part 2 before I watched part 1. It was a bit surprised that it seemed to be starting at the beginning! Anyway, very helpful. I'm looking forward to a video I think you teased about using XnView to prepare photos for a web site.
