Every bands peel session is their best output.
I absolutely agree. I think My Bloody Valentine is a good example, or Big Black, they both have better versions of songs when they did Peel sessions.
This version of drain you TOTALLY the best version ever !!!
Pretty much
+Jay Ham agreeed
For me, it's the Canal+ Nulles Parts Ailleurs in Paris, has THE Scream that gives me chills..... There's some little "extras" in this version that I like. :>)
There's definitely some definitive stuff between the three peel sessions they did. This one being the best out of them in my opinion.
jesus, it is. Chew your meat for you is a call back to his earlier song, 'I couldn't chew my meat so well'
John Peel should be sainted
so should Vibracobra
The guitar tone in Drain you is absolutly fanstastic.
The evolution from the 1989 session its quite impressive.
This is of financial and historical importance for the BBC radio 1.
Came here after the 89 peel sessions were remastered
This doesnt need it. The best peel session. Best version of all 3 songs. A lot of people prefer the tunnel in france's drain you, but this just all around has the moat monumental sound
Sound quality is absolutely amazing bar none, this is how I always dreamed of hearing Nirvana!!! Put on headphones and switch on you'll be blown away!
Super cool upload. Thanks for making a dream come true. RIP Kurt Cobain and John Peel.
that's the beauty of the peel sessions, from mid 70's to mid noughties: nothing to get in the way...
5:17...EPIC MOMENT IN ROCK N ROLL HISTORY
Omg i had goosebumps and im Nirvana fan for years. All 3 versions are great
agreed. john peel had some of the best taste I've never heard a peel sessions from a great band I didn't think totally rocked
Spot on!
man, vibracobra23, i could listen to nothing else if i only had all your peel posts! sincerely thank you. these are amazing one and all! thanks BBC
you're welcome
Recorded today 30 years ago.
This makes me feel happy
This was recorded on september 3th, two days after they finished up the two week european tour with Sonic Youth, that was filmed by Dave Markey in the 1991 the year punk broke documentary. Two days after the last show in Rotterdam, the band recorded they´re third and last Peel Session. Then returned to home afterwards, and the rest is history...
Sounds like Kurt doing the harmonies too..or is that Dave?
+Brian Berghoff Drain You I mean. I realize its live but jeez. Perfect harmonies
they're not hard harmonies, and dave and kurt are both good with pitch
I'm a little ignorant about how The Peel Sessions were recorded. Were the songs performed live or were they produced by Peel himself?
maida vale studios. a few session record engineers... from the likes of tony wilson to john walters etc etc etc.. i have no idea if peel ever sat in on any sessions or twiddled any nobs etc... he may have gleefully stood at door with pen and paper waiting for fall autographs.... actually did beefheart record any sessions????
You can tell they had just spent some time touring with Sonic Youth.
How so?
@@Cameron5540 The second half of Drain and all of Endless, Nameless
@@Cameron5540 the last part of endless nameless
I've just started listening to the session and this Dumb has a Sonic Youth feel to it. Kurt has a bit of a Thurston style drawl and without the bass part in the finished version it feels a bit like Sunday or any slow stonery sonic youth song
(This is supposedly John Peel recalling Nirvana, but the internal evidence points to it probably being the producer, Dale Griffin.)
"Nirvana did a few sessions at Maida Vale. I think I did their last one, which was still relatively early in their career. Jeff Smith phoned me and said 'you've got a really hot one this week - Nirvana', and to be honest I hadn't really heard of them. The session went well, and I thought they were good. We recorded it, went to the pub for a couple of drinks, then came back to mix it. It was only when their manager, John Silva, came in to the studio and told them that they'd just gone double-platinum in America (with 'Nevermind') that I thought, 'hmm, they must be quite famous then'.
"I remember that Kurt didn't react much when his manager told him their album was number one in the States. He seemed to be more bothered about that fact that Fender had delivered six white, left-handed Stratocaster guitars to his hotel room. They must've liked the session though, because they later insisted that I do the live recording at Reading."
Some of this must be mis-remembering, years later. 'Nevermind' was released in the UK and US on September 24th, some three weeks after the supposed session recording date. Nirvana were touring in the US in mid-September and arrived (presumably in this country) for a European tour in early November. 'Nevermind' went Gold, then Platinum, in the States during November 1991 but did not get to number 1 on the American charts until January 1992. If the session was recorded on September 3rd, neither the single ("Smells like teen spirit") nor the album had yet been released. If John's (or Dale's) recollection is partially correct then the session would have to have been much closer to the transmission date of November 3rd. It seems a shame to spoil a good story, but the chronology is all wrong.
As they were back in the UK in November it sounds more like two or more meetings that have blurred together. The tale improves in the telling and all that...
holy crap thank you, never heard that version of endless nameless
This take of the track that would eventually come to be called "Endless, Nameless" (the unlisted track on the early pressings of Nevermind) is better than the official album version!!
i have the CD with that hidden track, u wanna buy it?
Nah
Fantastic!
Total awesomeness
Interesting FX at the end of endless, nameless. Maybe something from the BBC’s equipment?
John Peel seemed to bring out the best in everyone.
The band The Fall in my opinion can be pretty bad, or great... anytime John Peel was involved, it was magic.
I don't know if he was. The producer was Dale Griffin.
Peel was rarely actually at the session recordings - they were usually done earlier in the day, or on a different day to the broadcast altogether, and then played out by Peel on his late-night show.
best version of dumb
❤️
Think i'm turning japanese by the Vapors referenced at 8:30. During Endless Nameless which is fascinating!!!
I recall that song (Turning Japanese by The Vapors) being played on MTV...loved the beat & was tickled each time i heard it...catchy and whimsical.
I love this and the photo is meow.
Só pérola,fiote
eh memu neh
In my opinion, this version of "Dumb" is better than the In utero's version
This recording of this song that would wind up on "In Utero" was done a couple weeks before the release of "Nevermind"
i think Drain You is the stand out here.
I agree
I dig it but in totality it’s not. But it’s art and music and everyone has a opinion and it’s a beautiful thing to see and share with others on opinion’s and have nerd music fiend chatter and a love for something shared with others that are all listening hard and loving the study of the music and with the love and affection forever and our tribe all growing up together with the music keeping us hungry for more music to listen to and find over time. Just like how during Covid many Nirvana things came out and I and many other people who have been sucked right back into the band and the super love of the bands music etc is hotter than the last 20 years. It’s like I had to put nirvana away after hours 1213 1415 and a kid in the 90s and then to have Covid kind of bring back the nitty-gritty of the world making the music relevant again as an adult and not just a punk kid and the teen angst. Grownup kids and better understandings etc.
Drain You too
yes the better

Vibracobra, awesome user name!
I totally forget what I was going to post.... something about the 13 downvoters to date being losers.
Really something
I see you in comments EVERYWHERE. We must share the same musical interests.

I do not understand a single word on Dumb, stil great. Production is great, bass sounds like it should sound on albums.Only drum sounds too "digital" for my taste. All in all it's great (This is the third time'great' pop's out) session.
I'm not like them, but I can pretend...
The sun is gone, but I have a light...
The day is done, but I'm havin' fun
I think I'm done...maybe just happy...

Wish away...oil is cheap...
Lesson learned... wish me luck...
Soothe the burn...wake me up...
@@chucktouchton398 Lol. It's "the soul is cheap" not "oil"
Has the entirety of these sessions not been released on an album or special edition or something like a box set??? Because these are great! I’ve only heard the sessions that are on insecticide.
Endless Nameless and Dumb are on the With the Lights Out boxset. Drain You is on the Nevermind 20th Anniversary 2xCD.
brilliant / tragic
thank you for your tragedy i need it for my art
i tink im dumb 2
Country twang seems noticeable on Drain You... but in Seattle?
+Marmamarquess west coast still....never seen rodeo in in west canada then?
Nirvana was Sikh man innit.
can you give some examples?
spank thru
how so cause the chours pedal is on how do you consider it country twang what exactly the voice? the guitar?
why Something In The Way isn't in the video?
It was in another session

let fashion do cheap I try too we soon
You tried
Dumb's the One
he wrote dumb during the nevermind years. most of the songs on in utero were actually written before Nevermind was released. i think he was having a hard time writing new music after their success and that's part of the reason he killed himself.
He was murdered you jackass!
I kinda agree with you
He was having a hard time writing music while he was strung out on heroin. Almost all of his great songs were written before he became heavily addicted.
Im pretty sure he wrote a lot of songs between 92-94, i mean, the songs that were on in utero were written in 90-92, if they would've released another album the songs would've been from 92-94, i think they just didn't have time to record demos or something like that. Actually, kurt had an entire album already written when he died, his solo album, hole's guitarist confirmed it, one of the songs was do re mi, if you pay attention, the songwriting on that song is really good, better than his past songs
@@fueradeservicio713 do re mi is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard-

The Kind of Shi i Like,
I guess Nirvana were right. The mix of Nevermind wasn't that good.
Why is this missing Aneurysm?
Not recorded at this session.
Kurt died way too early
I’m a misfit
Well that wasn't very good was it
I thought it was very pretty
