I wanted to try airbrushing and bought something similar to try. It works great for my needs. I get to make 3 or 4 models a year so the cost, quality of finish and ease of use are ideal for me.
I have a battery airbrush with a smaller (2ml) paint cup which is, as you say a great thing if you don't have much to paint. Getting the compressor and everything else out for a 5 minute job seems like a waste of energy. This is a good looking kit and the idea of a removeable battery and a spare is great selling point. Small hint with vallejo air, even though they come pre thinned some are thicker and need further thinning. The clogging of the brush could be an indication of the need of further thinning.
A very good review, and looks to be a useful combo. As per a couple of comments,a quick video on air brush care, including what you mean by bubble cleaning and tip drying might help new airbrush users 🙂
We have brought the Spitfire and Red Arrows Hawk starter kits for a Christmas present for my 12year old son. Looks like great fun and intro to model making. Thanks for the excellent tips. Will make a nice change from lego. Lol.
It actually, surprisingly, looks very good. If thats your skill alone, or the airbrbush, I can't tell. Only big negative here, is the very big hopper. It will use up your paint much faster. Good job, Matt

I recently bought a similar model, except that the battery pack is a single one and can also be used via Direct USB Charge as well as a separate battery pack, and has both plastic cups and also a smaller metal cup included. The rest of the accessories are the same. I like my version also.
Might enter e of these as my main Iwata is not in the modelling room and in a cold garage joined to the house so not much airbrushing at the moment this might solve the problem, thanks for your review cheers fred
I haven’t been able to airbrush for a few months dew to a faulty fluid nozzle which is causing all sorts of havoc to my paints so hopefully soon I’ll get a replacement or possibly a new airbrush.
Would be interesting for club meeting, touch ups at a show, or getting together with family like a niece or nephew to teach them a bit without risking the H&S etc.
Is there any chance you can point me to a video (or make one) showing how you clean your airbrush? If you have a technique that works Im all ears, mine are constantly clogged and too many end up in the bin.
Hi, just a question. I've recently bought a portable air paint brush. Different model to this. I've noticed that when I turn my model on, it already has air flowing out of nozzel before I press the spray handle. I'm pretty sure this shouldnt be happening. Would there be a way to stop this?
I also have casubaris airbrush too but airbrush itself isn't that reliable. Worked for times, but now, won't spray even though ive been cleaning by disassembled every times... any cleaning tips?
Liking the size of the compressor…very portable! Quite impressed and have been looking at one for a while, so this vid was perfectly timed. Did you find the hose took any pulsing out of the airflow while using it? Is there any pulsing in the airflow without the hose?
Yeah, these portable compressor/airbrush combos have been out for awhile and there are plenty of guides (and available adapters) on how to attach "proper" airbrushes. I personally would recommend going with a quick-release pressure-reducing adapter (like 4 euros with shipping on AliExpress wih a couple of spare 1/8inch adapters for extra brushes), since it allows to fine-tune the output of the compressor. Also, I'd suggest looking around a bit more on Ali or Ebay, since the prices for these buggers has cratered - 20 quid for a "single-action" (that becomes double-action with the addition of a 1euro valve), 30-40 for a similar unit to MM's (though including a 5ml metal cup and extra needles and nozzles). Edit: In fact, some stores have started selling the simpler "single-action" (that's a single valve away from becoming a double) this holiday season - I saw people mention finding it in Aldi UK (for 20 quid) and I'm preeeeeeeeetty sure I saw them somewhere over here in Ireland ;)
this only comes with 0.3mm needle/nozzle. Bubble cleaning is where you put your thumb over the end of the nozzle and force air back into the cup which creates bubbles and removes paint from the nozzle
Picked up one of the Autolock units last week. Still on the learning curve, but I'm liking it so far. I don't presently have the space to set up a large compressor and a spray booth, so this will help.
Hi Mr Minutes. What do you wash your stories in? I've just been using not water n a touch of fairy liqu and a new toothbrush. I've just built a couple of those new airfix starter sets but the paint acted as if it was on a waxy surface, you'd paint it but then it balled up if you know what I mean. The paint is in good condition so I don't think it's that and I'm now wondering if it's now I'm washing the series Merry Xmas buddy
Washing sprues in warm soapy water and adding a dash of vinegar can help. If the plastic is clean and paint is still not sticking, try applying a spray can primer base which then acts as a “key” for the next layer
How does this compare to the "fishtank" air compressor type kits similar to the one you reviewed quite some time ago? Which would be better for a beginner? For the price of the item you linked to, it is possible to buy "proper" if cheap compressor.
this is definitely a superior system to the airbrush and compressor i got for £60 a few years back, but it won't replace a "proper" compressor with variable psi and storage tank in my opinion. It's still a good product and I will be using it in different projects
I have never used an airbrush and have been wanting to get one for a long time now, would this be a good one to start with? Also, for cleaning it, do I need to get airbrush cleaner?
This would be an acceptable start to airbrushing to learn the basics - though a better system with a storage tank, variable psi and moisture trap would (although more expensive) still be something to look into. Airbrush cleaner can be helpful but water and thinners can be used to clean an airbrush
Probably - if they are thin enough, but if you've seen my challenge video where I used cheap paints on the airfix A6M2 Zero model, they aren't gonna be any good, you'd be better off saving up for some proper modelling paints
No, the paint was not thinned. As mentioned in the video I was using Vallejo Model Air paints which come already thinned at the correct ratio for airbrush use straight out the bottle 👌
So I bout hombrul paint to use on my gotha ww1 bomber plane but the color that it said it was and that the lid was where completely off from each other. Is this normal with humbrol or not? Edit like does it happen to you when you buy there paint
These sort of airbrush with a mini compressor are all the same. They are OK to start off in airbrushing. But ultimately they are not worth the money. Currently selling for just under $80 from your link. For a little more money, you could get a decent proper compressor and a far better airbrush. I tried something similar, and it wasn't very good. The compressor part lets it down. A quick search on Amazon reveals a few decent airbrush & compressor kits. Some of which are a similar price with a proper compressor included.
This kind of system would never replace a proper compressor with tank and a good quality airbrush, but it has been quite handy to use in some of my builds
@@ModelMinutes That's what I was getting at. There's no point in wasting money on something like this. If people are serious about airbrushing models. Then they really should invest in a proper compressor and a decent airbrush. You don't have to spend a ton of cash on one though.
This huge plastic paint container for the airbrush looks a bit off-putting. It sounds like a massive waste of paint. Luckily one can use any airbrush with it. This sounds like something for me, I airbrush in the middle of my living room so something cordless sounds very useful. 🙂
Yeah, it is quite a handy system - I think the big container can be swapped out for a smaller one seeing as it has a screw attachement, but I've not yet located one of those. Really happy with this product on the whole though
Every ad I’ve seen for this makes it look far too uncomfortable to use as a “handheld” unit. They really should stop tying to sell it as such and just promote it as a lot with a tiny, battery powered compressor.

I just saw this in an ad from our local art store and it caught my attention. Thanks for testing it for us!
No problem!
Not going to lie, quite tempted to pick one up, mostly down the compactness of the unit.

A good suggestion, I can look into it in the future
You've used Vallejo water -based acrylic. But can you also use lacquer paints or paints like a water-based Tamiya which has a solvent component?
yeah, there shouldn't be any issues using those
Looks a good portable airbrush. Did you thin the paint?
If it’s airbrush ready paint I don’t usually thin it more

sounds like there is a fault in the airbrush somewhere, perhaps the valve in the handle isn't turned to the right position?
Would you say the compressor that came with this kit is better than the plug-in black box one you reviewed a while back?
Definitely
I also have casubaris airbrush too but airbrush itself isn't that reliable. Worked for times, but now, won't spray even though ive been cleaning by disassembled every times... any cleaning tips?

@ModelMinutes I checked the nozzle, and it's fine... think, casubaris airbrush itself isn't reliable.

The pulsing is minimal, to the point where I can't say I noticed it too much. The hose acts as a little storage tank really which helps
Will compressor work with other airbrushes?
