I’m so grateful I have the memory of my first day of kindergarten when, even though the plan was for me to ride the bus home, my mom showed up to see me and ask if I wanted to take the bus or go with her. I’ll never forget how she appeared, just as I was feeling disoriented and anxious about my bus. I chose to ride the bus, and I’d like to think seeing her gave me the courage to go, and she reassured me she’d be at the bus stop waiting when I got home. As a kid you don’t recognize it, but the older I get the more sappy I get about that stuff. She really showed up for me in every way, but also fostered independence in me.
