He is a complete scapegoat with fans and its a completely incorrect rewriting of history. Like he somehow wrote the black album. The entire black album was fully written and demoed before he came in. Apart from tempos thats the only thing he really inputted in. And St Anger aside, the black album, load, reload, garage inc and s and m is the best sound metallica ever had on records. People just shit on it because they dont like the tunes which is fair enough but he is an excellent producer. Also, st anger sounding the way it did is as much on the band as him. They all liked the snare and it was lars' initial idea to turn his snare off. Id personally like to see him back with Metallica.
He is a great dude and he was always on point in terms of sound and getting the best out of everybody in the band. And he was also the only person that could oppose the decisions of Lars and James and they listened when he lectured them on how a record should sound.

Bob was a solid bass player but he doesn't have the insane ability that Rob has. I can't believe how many people don't realize quite how advanced Rob is technically, but the guy is, while perhaps lacking in personality compared to Cliff and Jason, the most consistently excellent bass player Metallica has had.

And Bob's point was that there are TONS of incredibly talented session players out there who can play the material with ease, but Metallica being a brand were looking for an image to go along with the bass player, and that is the reason Trujillo was settled on. I don't dispute that the guy is a great bass player, but he was chosen more for his image than just his raw bass playing ability.

It's funny that Metallica, a huge band, was reduced to this kind of setup for a gig. I wonder why they didn't get Big Mick, their usual sound guy, to come and do this one show? I have to think they had him on some kind of retainer.

I interpreted, and the timeline of 2003 Metallica events backs it up, that at the point they were doing the Raiders parking lot gig Rob had already been hired or was at the top of the list of finalists. But, following their business plan for 2003 they weren’t ready to make a full announcement. The Raiders gig was very last minute and they had to do what they had to do without throwing their carefully laid “comeback” plans out of whack.
James must be really glad he played this gig since to this day it's not just the last home playoff game for the Raiders, but their last playoff game period. Sorry, James. Long live the Tuck Rule.

Metallica needs new management. The band wants to play before the game and their managers say no cause they won't make money off of it. Jeez, what about just playing and having fun?
Besides the issue(s) about James and Echobrain, the management was another big reason why Jason left. He talks about it in a 1 hour long interview conducted by Scuzz tv. After a long time built up, he got tired of his managers' robotic behavior in the never ending machine the band was caught in. When he called a meeting to meet with just the other guys and himself in a hotel room, but somehow, the management got wind of the meeting and followed James, Lars, and Kirk to the hotel with their permission with Phil Towle as well. At the beginning of the meeting to the middle of it, the original four met ( after the management and Phil Towle were pushed away by Jason). Then the management interrupted and invited themselves in and just robotically handed out announcements to everyone like they didn't care about the fatalistic issue at hand. That was the big example and catalyst for Jason's final decision to leave the band. He was
