Fun fact: Although it’s never confirmed in the show, the book does indeed confirm that some items take longer to pop out of the bottomless pit, and some never come back. Socks never come back. Junk mail almost always does. If something doesn’t come back after 24 hours it never will.
This is probably one of my _most favoritest_ Gravity Falls episodes ever simply just because of the absolute sheer goofiness this episode had. It was just pure genius. Like, I just can't help but wonder if the writers were high on something and had said "You know what be a great episode? Having Dipper, Mabel, Stan and Soos fall down a bottomless pit." and wrote the entire episode in like 5 minutes flat. lol
Actually, the background artists wanted something simple for them to draw, so Alex Hirsch came up with an episode of the characters in a pit for twenty minutes. Instead, it ended up including three times as many background as usual!
Originally, the crew planned to do an episode where Dipper and Mabel attended Twinstitute, a school for twins, but they couldn't crack it. Bottomless Pit was done instead to makeup for lost production time. At one point, series creator Alex Hirsch planned on having the characters talk in front of a black background for the entire episode. The original ending had the Bottomless Pit lead to an alternate Gravity Falls, where the remainder of the series would have taken place, but Alex couldn’t figure out how to make it work. While having the characters fall out of the pit is admittedly a cop out, Alex felt it was justified given the small-scale nature of the episode. Source: Bottomless Pitt Commentary Track included on the Blu-ray Set.
The idea for this episode was that the background artists wanted something with less backgrounds for them to draw. It was supposed to just be everyone falling in a dark pit for 22 minutes but it ended up including three times as many backgrounds!
*Fun Fact:* Mabel's story is the only one that actually happened apparently, the other ones weren't canonical. Also, that was Alex Hirsch who was juggling on a unicycle surrounded by alligators on the TV in Mabel's story
It makes sense for their characters as well - Dipper’s story is essentially “everyone makes fun of me,” which speaks volumes about his insecurities - note that even Soos (who usually defends him) and Wendy (who is nothing but nice to him) join in with the mockery. Meanwhile, Soos achieves something that to him is a huge deal (because he’s the kind of guy who would consider getting the high score on a pinball machine to be his greatest achievement), but he gives it up to save the kids, showing the depth of his devotion to the Pines family.
This episode is what happens when you want to ease the workload in a hectic schedule by deciding to have your character floating in a black void all episode, thus requiring no background paintings - but end up telling four different stories, each needing their own unique backgrounds painted.
I'm not sure why Mabel and Soos' first instinct upon hearing Dipper's voice was bashing him in the head of all things, but it still makes me laugh every time.
I really like the fact that Mabel's story was the only one that actually happened. It's funny to me to think of that possibility, but it would have been really strange for the group to be recounting stories they were already involved with and know the events of. Though I could have understood it as simply a framing device. Also, it was pointed out to me that Dipper's story centered around being made fun by the Soos and Mabel, despite Soos being concerned for him when Mabel's teasing cranked up in "Little Dipper". Plus, the entire story may have been a reflection of Dipper's low self-esteem, as the premise is essentially "people make fun of me". And for Soos' story, he is quite out of character, as he constantly watches out for both Dipper and Mabel ensuring their safety and wellbeing(like if teasing crossed into bullying), whereas in his story he almost got them killed over keeping his high score.
I don't know if you remember it, but there was an episode of Amphibia that directly paralleled Gravity Falls. It was the episode with the wax museum where Anne was almost encased in wax. It was run by the Curator, who was a frog version of Grunkle Stan, and it even had Frog Soos, who asked if the Curator ever wondered if there were an infinite number of parallel universes with alternate versions of themselves with none of them knowing about the other's existence.
Fun fact: in one of the gravity falls books, you can see a little wanted poster of Eda, and it’s also confirmed that Stan and Eda were married for a day, then Eda stole his money and car
Fun fact: Jason Ritter, who voices Dipper, voiced Barrell, one of King Andrias' friends in the flashbacks in The Core and the King from Amphibia. Don't know if you noticed that but I wanted to point that out!
“This is probably one of my most favoritest Gravity Falls episodes” (same) I love the way she laughed when Mabel said, “My time has come!” OMG that was awesome I hope she does a reaction on the Gravity Falls & owl house comic con panel I just love the way she reacts to her videos we see I love her so much & the shows too. Dipper's voice in voiceover sounds like the male narrator in Ever After High (Joe Sanfelippo). I know it's not but it sounds so similar and I just wanted to point it out

Yo, i dont know if you’ll see this but if you can, you should watch “see you again” lumity animatic, by dork with a pen. It’s based off the original conflict as if, in season 2 Luz made the portal and went back to the human world saying bye to everyone. You should watch it, it’ll make you cry your eyes out and make sure to have subtitles on so you can see them talking (because they don’t talk in the video) Well that’s all from me bye :)
I think it would be cool to be in a pinball machine- if it was off. Have you seen those machines? They're so cool! There's a reason why one of Sesame Street's most famous cartoon segment is the pinball number count ones!
Just like Gravity Falls' lore, it just gets deeper, like the bottomless pit. Also, I think she could have used the yellow glow in the thumbnail for episode 19. But she might use it again. Also, I wish you didn't cut out the "To the Hospital, Honey-Pants" scene. 😆

Pfft, you don't need a bottomless pit for socks to disappear and never come back. Just do laundry.
The socks thing is hilarioius.

Oh that’s a mood
The line "Any of you kids see my girdle? Where my girdle at?" made me laugh so much!!!! LOL!!!!!!!
That was my favorite part from Dipper's Story
every filler episode isn't filler because every episode has a role to play in the main story episodes. This episode especially!
It comes back in the you-know-what episode
Also Wendy mentions it during an emotional moment where her character stood out
*Fun Fact:* Mabel's story is the only one that actually happened apparently, the other ones weren't canonical.
Also, that was Alex Hirsch who was juggling on a unicycle surrounded by alligators on the TV in Mabel's story
Ego boost? Nope, that's the crew's way of making fun of Alex

To add another thing in Soos' story, Mabel was eager to cheat despite normally being somewhat against cheating.
excited for the reaction for the episode after this one. easily one of my favorite s1 episodes
And a very similar episode in structure comes with Season 2
She is five episodes away from meeting Dorito boy. One of the best cartoon villains tbh.
I remember this in Stan memory’s the bottom less pit where they all fall in & they tell stories to be pass the time!

Yeah, there was even a message saying that there's a Soos in every dimension, I think
I love seeing you decoding and wondering about the big mystery of GF. Reminds me of when the series first came out.
"Anyone of you kids seen mah girdle? Where's my girdle at?" I love that part 🤣
She is getting so close to when things are starting to get real. I'm excited
If the voice at the intro say 26 letters and the numbers at the end only go up to 26, you can decode it!
Fun fact: in one of the gravity falls books, you can see a little wanted poster of Eda, and it’s also confirmed that Stan and Eda were married for a day, then Eda stole his money and car
There is nothing more bottomless than the *Bottomless Pit* which as you all can see… is absolutely bottomless.
question: is it bottomless?

Stan's new voice cracked me up so hard. This really got me off guard
