I only just realized it, but Ford saying that the unicorn hair can only be obtained by a creature with a pure heart implies that he fell for the unicorn's scam before, which I just find funny.
I still have no idea how the hell Alex Hirsch got away with that butterfly/fairy dust deal turned sting operation scene. Apparently, he doesn't either. The emails between him and the S&P staff he revealed suggest it wasn't easy. And then Grenda just chloroforms a satyr afterwards, like seriously. How?
@@jakubgodyn7413 yeah, but in what Alex shared from the S&P emails, they denied showing two elderly lesbians in the episode The Love God. And only allowed the cops to be implied as gay and it only got fully confirmed in the last episode of the show
There's something I find incredibly funny about them taking unicorns, usually depicted as such whimsical, wholesome creatures, and saying, "Nah, they're assholes."
The other two unicorns don't seem too bad. They're still dirty scammers, but they don't seem to approve of Celestebebelle rubbing in the idea of Mabel not being pure of heart. They seem like the kind of scammers that would tell people pure hearts are rare, and not having one doesn't make you a bad person. Just human. Followed by this exchange: "Really?" 🥹 "Yeah, whatever. Just keep your hands off our hair." 🦄🙄
I personally like Pliny's description of the unicorn in 77 BC, claiming to quote the original Greek depiction of the unicorn by Ctesias in 398 BC (which was most likely an Indian rhinoceros): a beast with "the body of a horse, head of a stag, feet of an elephant, and tail of a boar", with a single horn "at least a cubit long and colored white at the base, black in the middle, and bloody crimson at the tip", that was extremely foul-tempered and hunted its prey by chasing it down and goring it with its horn.
Kinda Fun fact: This episode was the replacement for a Wendy episode that was scrapped relatively late in production, so this one was written by Alex Hirsch over only a single day. Apparently Wendy would've gotten weather powers.
(No spoilers, just thoughts below.) I was still a teenager when this episode aired. I'm 28 now, and as I've grown, it reaches an entirely new level of disturbing to me. Particularly, the way Ford is isolating Dipper. We can clearly see him passing along his bad habits to his nephew - encouraging him to keep things a secret from everyone and anyone, telling Dipper his support system just cannot understand the complexity of their situation like Ford can. Despite the fact that Mabel, Stan, Soos, and Wendy have all stood up against the dangers and weirdness of this town alongside Dipper all summer. Years ago, Ford cut himself off from his entire family to live in the woods, essentially becoming a recluse, and what happened? He was manipulated by Bill and completely taken advantage of. No one can say what may have happened if he'd stayed in touch with his family or forgiven Stan -- a swindler himself with a keen eye for cons -- but he was so far gone and wrapped up in his own self importance that not even McGucket could really get through to him. Ford has always walked his path alone. And it's in the way Dipper has been consumed with paranoia, repeating, "Trust no one, trust no one" when Ford tried to approach him that reeks of trauma, and his uncle only encourages that fear response. Of course, a demon who can take over minds and identities is an extenuating circumstance that warrants vigilance, and Dipper's reaction is understandable. I do believe Ford just wanted to keep his nephew safe, but keeping everything bottled inside, keeping everything a secret, locking yourself in a basement cut off from the world and anyone who could be your ally to do so... is not the answer. And like Elijah said in a previous episode, it's downright reckless. Ford may be older. He may even be the smartest man alive. But, that doesn't automatically make him wise.
I adore Ford, he's my favorite character. But yeah, he is not wise. Dipper was already primed to become paranoid once he found a journal in the woods with TRUST NO ONE written on the first pages. (Mabel tells Dipper in the very first ep that she's not going to let him ruin her date with his usual conspiracy theories -- which tells us that he was like that before he got to Gravity Falls.) We can also look at "Not What He Seems" to see how quick Dipper is to become untrusting, and to believe the worst when something doesn't add up. Unfortunately... Ford is the wrong person for Dipper to bond with, and vice versa. Yeah, Ford sees his younger self in Dipper... but that's definitely not a good thing. BOTH of them need grounding from others. And here we have Ford, who does have real threats to worry about -- Bill, and the apocalypse. But Ford has also spent the last *thirty years* isolated, alone, on the run from people trying to capture him to hand him over to Bill. I think one of the most interesting things about this run of episodes is how Ford comes back, and *seems* so normal in some ways; but he really, really is not. The man has a shitload of trauma, and he needs years of therapy. Instead he's got a real threat to deal with, and no opportunity to to reflect or work on his issues. So his paranoia makes sense (the universe and a certain dream demon ARE out to get him), and the surprising thing isn't that he keeps secrets from almost everyone -- it's that he let Dipper in, at all. You have to wonder if things would have gone differently if he hadn't confided in Dipper either. (Ultimately, I think not; that Rift was going to break at some point.) As it is, he's definitely reinforcing Dipper's worst traits; and in the process, continuing to reinforce his own worst traits, as well. One thing I do like about the way Ford acts during this run of episodes (and about him in general; but I mean, I like this writing decision on the team's part) is that despite the paranoia, he is surprisingly kind. While he has a few moments where you can see what I would call the Pines Temper (the way he becomes stern and angry during that sequence in this ep; which is clearly his reaction to being afraid), he's actually a lot less stern and angry than he could have been. I like that he often makes a point to say positive things to the kids, and praise them. Like in this ep -- he's quick to agree that Mabel is "the most pure of heart person in this room", and to give her a journal and a weapon to go on the quest (*some* faith in her, even if of course he shouldn't have given her the weapon). Once the danger is over with Dipper, instead of yelling at him, the first thing he really says is, "If that really had been Bill, you would have done great". And in the end, he takes the time to praise Mabel for succeeding in the quest. He does have other moments like this, but they're particularly obvious in this episode. And it's nice that the show gives him that, to counter-balance the big mistakes in judgement that he's making with respect to other things.
exactly this! (spoilers below) . . . . . particularly with asking dipper to take on his apprenticeship once summer ends instead of going to high school... this kid is 13 years old and can't be hiding out in a cabin with his great uncle instead of growing up and socializing and doing healthy kid stuff. I wouldn't call dipper selfish but I do think both he and mabel have flawed ways and it sucks that mabel is the only one who gets blasted for it

@@Stargiw maybe I'm wrong but I don't feel like elijah loves gravity falls the way a lot of us do (which is fine, people have different likes and dislikes)
I don't like assuming some things, but I won't lie, I'm 100% assuming that I know Elijah's thoughts on Mabel for the rest of the show, solely based on her reaction to Sock Opera. TLM validates my assumption :/ buuuuut who knows, maybe, HOPEFULLY, I'll be wrong ^^
It makes me very sad to see Elijah hate on Mabel so much, I really makes watching her reactions on this show disappointing and in turn makes me bot want to watch the rest of her reactions cuz I know how she’s going to react to them.
Mabel is so loveable bro... people make mistakes, it makes me sad aswell elijah doesnt like her, because i do think mable is on the adhd spectrum.. because look at her..!!
In defense of Mabel, she IS 12, children are annoying, and make stupid/selfish decisions sometimes. And it’s not necessarily an excuse, and if people dislike her character that’s totally fine but I feel like she gets an excessive amount of hate for a child being realistically bad sometimes. It’s definitely annoying sometimes but some people take it too far
@@roktavory7399 Actually, Sakura was 12 when she called Naruto an orphan. But I agree. I mean, I also find Mabel a little bit annoying and selfish... However, that's because Mabel is too much obsessive and naive and gets easily carried away... not to mention being cheerful and kind to a flaw. She is just a pre-teen that is still learning how to be a better person. Even Dipper was selfish a few times, especially when it came to his pursue for Wendy's affections. Sure, Dipper has sacrificed more for Mabel than the other way around, but that doesn't mean she won't do anything for those she loves.
I think the problem people have is she does it so much tho like almost every episode while dipper almost never does it and they're the same age i actually dont think any other character the same age as her acts as selfishly so often. I personally don't hate her as a character but i can see why people get so annoyed by it
@@lilxgraveyardxshawty420 Well no, it's that Dipper does it in a way that forwards the plot, so people are more partial to him. Mabel's actions are for the moment, but Dipper's tend to be for the future, so his selfishness is _regularly_ overlooked.
@@lilxgraveyardxshawty420I mean.. from a character aspect, I can see it.. but I feel like Mabel is.. realistic. Showing a side of children that's rarely shown.. Like.. if child me was in her spot, I feel like people would treat me with the same dislike/hatred they feel for her. Though, people do tend to hold different expectations for fictional characters than real people.
It breaks my heart to see that no one likes Mabel in reactions. I've loved her since I was a kid and in a way I understand her (especially at the end of the season). Yes, she is not perfect and not good, but...she is just a human, just a child
Yeah no, the amount of Mabel hate is very disappointing- I feel like people wanna compare her to Dipper in terms of maturity level, but he has a habit of acting older then he is. Dipper has done selfish things too but I don't see anyone going "wow he sucks! terrible!" Mabel is a realistically flawed child character, who has many stand out traits outside of 'boy crazy'- she's the reason for one of the most iconic scenes in the series. She's great and an important part! Don't have to love her, but I've been sick of the slander for years.
right? she's 12 here and all she's doing is having a fun summer 😭 the whole "treating dipper badly" thing come on, don't ignore the times when dipper mistreated her, she's so cute and it genuinely breaks my heart that people literally hate her
I love her too. It is disappointing to see her be disliked by so many people. Everyone has different opinions and I respect that, but it can still be sad to see a well-written character you like be hated.

I don't think Mabel was trying to make herself look better. She was trying to prove to the unicorn that she's a good person. She's a little kid after all.
@@Rayni_XZ.o Proving yourself to someone and trying to make yourself better are different actually. Trying to make your self look better is selfish. But proving yourself just proves your a good person to someone so they know they can trust you. Which is not selfish.
@@jaxcraft2848 No, that's even more selfish than trying to make yourself look better, because she was doing all these stuff just to get approved by some make up wearing gay horse, and in fact, her "good" deeds are not actually good, there's a scene where Mabel vandalising old founder of Gravity Falls memorial.
@@Rayni_XZ.o Most actions aren’t selfless. I like to do things for others, help them, and make them happy because it makes ME happy. Kids are especially selfish anyway. It’s funny seeing so many people hate of Mabel when I can say for a fact that those same people were just as bad when they were twelve if not worse.
@@Rayni_XZ.o No, making yourself look better is being a bad person and pretending to be good. Mabel trying to prove she was a good person was her, as she says, recognizing that she's not as good lately as she's been in the past, and trying to make up for that by being better. Unlike the former, she's not pretending, she's actually trying to be good.
I love how whenever Bill pops up Elijah is always like "Oh hi" greeting him like an old friend then as the scene goes on she just gets progressively more uncomfortable
i just think it's kinda weird how people are with Mabel and call her selfish and a bad sister for being "mean" to Dipper, Stan does the same and is also a criminal but people love him and think it's funny when HE makes fun of Dipper but when she does it she is the bad one?? also she is a child who just wants a good summer and a nice summer love story like every pre teen but for some reason people treat her character like she's the worst character in the show
Yeah, but Stan unlike Mabel did face consequences, he lost his brother, spended 30 years to bring him back, lost him again and in the end defeated the bad guy in price of his memories, which makes him the hero. As for Mabel, she's really selfish and manipulative, you can't just go and say "but she's just twelve years old" because Dipper is the same age as her, Pacifica and Gideon even younger, but still got their redemption arc. I might say that, but she's not the worst character, it still would be better if they didn't do her as "main character" since she gets more attention on her behavior.
@@Rayni_XZ.o She's still a child. The day y'all realize Dipper is just as immature as her is the day media literacy will be alive again. He just plays a more "mature" role because he wants the approval of the adults around him. Pacifica did not get a redemption at all, the show poorly takes her back to her dirty routes by the end. She may no longer take her parents bs but she's still a horrible, spoiled, rich little brat How the hecc Mabel did not face the consequences of her actions? The whole Weirdmaggedon was just that She's not selfish nor manipulative omg, she's a KID. Y'all hate a 12 year old for being 12 at this point
@@izachi-chan2432 1.As i said earlier, so are Dipper and Pacifica, they both are kids, Mabel is the oldest of them, sure, Dipper is trying to act more "mature", but he's still a kid, and despite being younger than Mabel, he ALWAYS faces consequences. 2.Show did a good take on her, she, of course, could not change in one episode, but progress is visible in her character even though we've seen not too much of her. 3.And she still didn't apologize for that after, only when she ends up in the universe of her clones, she realizes how selfish she was the whole summer and apologizes for "causing" Weirdmaggedon. 4.She is manipulative, especially towards Dipper, even in season 1 episode 2 she manipulates him to make her "co-capitan" by throwing camera, Dipper brought for monster hunt, off board, that is 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. There's more times she was been manipulative, not only to Dipper, but to her family and friends.
It's not always clear that the show realises when she's being a dick. The show is always aware when Stan is being a dick. That's the simple answer. On rewatch, I don't think the argument that Mabel is never called out is fair - Dipper did it in the D&D episode and she actually had to acknowledge that he had a point, for instance - and a lot of the stuff Dipper "sacrificed" for her... isn't that, on rewatch. People sometimes use The Time Traveler's Pig as an example of Dipper sacrificing everything for Mabel, but that was Dipper selfishly retconning Robbie and Wendy's relationship out of existence with a stolen time machine, at the expense of Mabel's pet. He got one fun day out of it with a girl he had absolutely no chance with because she's too old for him, and he screwed over Robbie, Mabel and arguably Wendy to do it - Robbie hadn't done anything wrong at that point besides being rude to Dipper, so none of them deserved it. Of course he had to fix it, because if you take yourself out of Dipper's perspective and look at it from a wider viewpoint, that was incredibly selfish of him. But Mabel doesn't seem to learn much from being called out and the show has a greater focus on Dipper's internal life than Mabel's - Mabel still gets a lot of screentime but Dipper is definitely the main character - so it can feel disproportionate. I get where they're coming from.
Fun fact: In the Gravity Fall's journal, it was revealed by Ford that he would keep himself awake for days at a time to prevent Bill from ever entering his mind. He was that scared of Bill.
That's for sure... and some of the demanded changes and reasons for the changes were quite surreal. I really thought: "Are these dudes for real?!" I am so glad that Alex fought really hard to gives us the "Gravity Falls" that we have.
I fuckin love this episode it’s in my top 5. The way it’s a Mabel focused episode having unicorns take center stage is so fun. The voice of the main unicorn is so hilarious and its name is absolutely ridiculous 😂. To then have Wendy and the girls tell Mabel to rise up against the unicorns was such a treat I wish we could’ve seen the actual fight. It’s also nice to see what relationship Ford had with bill and the way the episode ends off definitely leaves future characters to be very suspicious.

I'm sorry Fiddleford 2. I miss dimension 52 I forget the rest, but they're there. It makes me so sad to see people hating on Mabel for acting like, well, a kid. Sure, she's got flaws, but that's what makes her interesting! She's one of the best characters on the show!
Well "she's a kid" is a stupid argument, my little brother is younger than Mabel and he understands morality well. But I have to agree on that one she's really one of the best characters in the show.
@@Rayni_XZ.o When I said that people hate on her for 'acting like a kid' I was more so referring to the teasing she gives Dipper and all her other little quirks (namely her boy crazy phase), not her understanding of morality. (Which, I'd argue that she *does* understand morality, but that's besides the point.)
i think both mabel and dipper have struggles with understanding morality in different ways it just sucks how in most discourse mabel gets the short end of the stick
Just a heads up, next episode was supposed to air earlier in the season (probably before Northwest Manor), but its production was delayed and it ended up here instead. So if it doesn't fit tonally or plot wise with the surrounding episodes, that's why.
Bill Cipher is essentially an Eldritch Horror. According to Journal 3, when McGucket was sucked into the portal, he saw Bill removing his exoskeleton to feed. Just 1 more episode before the 5 part finale.
Yeah, for Mabel to even think she had a pure heart after all the selfish actions she had done... like going back on her promise to Dipper just to pursue a stupid crush and inviting her friends for a sleep-over without consulting Dipper (her roommate)... let alone all the teasing on her brother... I mean, Mabel is not a bad person, since she is just a kid... and she did had a point in saying that, if there was someone in her family that had a chance in getting the unicorn hair it would be her... But to think for certainty she would be worthy is just a bit entitling... Fortunately, this experience gave Mabel some perspective about the subjectivity of morality...
They’re siblings. All siblings tease each other. There’s no such thing as someone who’s pure of heart just like nobody is perfect. Dippers just as bad anyway. People get mad just because for once a show actually shows kids actually acting like kids. Kids are all selfish and mean like come on. Pretty sure at least 80% of my grade in intermediate school were selfish brats who would say mean things to other kids, make fun of them, and talk behind their back. Most times people do good deeds because it makes them happy. Is that not selfish in itself? It’s not really different then what Mabel was doing.
@@rafaelmatos5851I mean, to be fair, everyone always thinks "I couldn't be the wrong one, here." Especially at that age. A decent chunk of her self perception is based on the idea she's a good person, otherwise being called a bad one wouldn't have effected her as much. The brain likes overlooking what doesn't fit in with a pre-existing idea, and you also have to remember confirmation bias exists, even in situations like this. She's 12, and maybe I have a semi-unique view here because I was a lot like her when I was a kid, but... she strikes me as the person who doesn't pick up on when it's too far unless it's extreme. Doesn't notice when she harms others, and keeps going under the belief she could never be a bad person.. so she wouldn't notice if she wasn't.. though, that could also be purely projection because *I* was that naive at that age.
I kinda figured the unicorns were full of shit when C-Beth said Mabel was doing good deeds for the wrong reason and that she was just a bad person, cause Mabel was literally only on this journey to meet a unicorn, but more importantly protect her family XD the former's selfish, yes, but the latter is extremely noble.
There's something very funny about the sting operation in the middle of the episode and the several dark jokes in this. HOW DID THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS 😂
I don't dislike her... She is fun and kind... and her empathy and positivity balances Dipper's paranoid and more logical mind quite well. But I have to admit that the fact she gets easily carried away and how she is constantly meddling on other people's lives can sometimes be quite annoying and doesn't favor her at all.
@@rafaelmatos5851 That is a good point but its also the same with dipper I feel like people see dipper as the level headed one but he has had done extremely dumb things as well
"Very narcissistic of you" how about just good self-esteem? I mean she's even using "one of the sweetest people I knew" in the past tense. I used to think quite highly of myself until I got bullied so much that I became an insecure, anxious, self-deprecating loser. Self-confidence is important and I think while Mabel certainly has a bit of a selfishness problem sometimes (it could be argued the repetitivity of her not learning her lesson by the next episode is due to this series being one of the first of its kind to be more plot-focused so it still suffered from some of the episodic-ness of similar shows) this sentence isn't part of it.
You're so right though, like I don't understand why a child having some good selfesteen is an issue. Mabel isn't a bad person so like... Of course she's gonna think she's a good person? It's so exhausting seeing the Mabel hate STILL being so common. But what should we expect from a braindead reactor who can't comprehend basic media
9:47: Damn! Even from this, Elijah's still not changing her mind! Mabel's trying her best and she doesn't mean any harm. 😂 10:08: COME ON! 😂😭 14:29: Lore!
I'm not sure it got cut for being too violent, but rather, just for time. This episode already has the shortened intro, something they did when they wanted to be able to add extra seconds of animation. (Surprising how much you can accomplish with even an extra 30 seconds!) But even with that, they had only so many minutes to work with. If you wanted the unicorn fight to stay, then you'd have to pick a different 9 seconds to cut. I'm not saying it's not possible to find another 9 seconds in the ep that you'd be willing to sacrifice, but in the end, they made a different decision.
One of my favorite episodes in the whole series. That woodland drug deal-turned-sting operation, complete with dirty cop, is probably the most messed-up thing I've ever seen in a Disney show. It was fantastic.
"I havn't been in this dimension in a while, its okay to give children weapons right?" and then hands them a crossbow...I feel like that was a stab at Narnia *Santa giving the kids weapons*.
This episode beat us over the head with the point of purity is bullshit and everyone, especially little kids can make mistakes and still not be bad people for it, and some people still wanted to act like Mable was the worst. I also don't believe in "doing it for the wrong reasons" like, as long as you're making a positive difference which Mable usually does, I feel like it doesn't matter if there's selfish motivations involved. Almost no motivation is entirely selfless. This isn't a dig at Elijah specifically btw, its just something that's been common in the fandom, the Mable hate train conveniently ignoring canon flat out telling us why the anti Mable arguments don't hold up. I don't know man I've just had a lot of time to think about this.
Thank you! Seriously isn’t the point of the episode the fact the there is no such thing as a pure of heart person. Most actions aren’t really all that selfless. I like to do things for others, help them, and make them happy because it makes ME happy. That’s still technically a selfish motivation. It’s no different than Mabel doing good deeds to make herself seem like a better person honestly.
@May11576 and it's not like she's doing it to *seem* better anyway, she's doing it to *be* better! "I've been slacking in the goodness department" implies she's aware she hasn't been helping as much, which is already a wild thing for boy crazy 12 year old to be characterized as kind helpful and self aware, and she wants to fix that about herself because she's a good person. The kind of person who pushes her brother to stop overthinking his own dreams and just go for them, the kind that doesn't need to be told to take the high road while Dipper goes and taunts Pacifica about her fake family history, the kind that doesn't care about losing a popularity contest because she made new friends, the kind that gives up the things she wants too, when they hurt people, like with Several Times. Dipper does insensitive things to Mable all the time and no one mentions it, but as soon as Mable dares to do anything selfish its more fuel to the fire. Alex has stated multiple times that Dipper isn't always a great guy and a lot of the show is him growing up and out of toxic mindsets. His jealousy of his sister's happiness is one of those things I think. Mable can find joy in anything while Dipper has to analyze the situation and find what's wrong with it. I'm just rambling at this point but anyway Mable is a good person I'll die on this hill.
@@tomsparrow1823 Fully agree, Most people hating on Mabel that I’ve seen just seem to think she’s doing it to seem better because of the context, though I don’t actually personally agree. They automatically assume it’s for a more selfish reason because of the goal to obtain the hair. But I agree it’s more that she simply wants to be better. And shouldn’t that make her a pretty good person? At the end of the day nobody’s perfect, especially kids. Kids are selfish, mean, and make tons of mistakes because they’re children. They don’t understand a lot of things like putting others before yourself or when not to say certain things. Wanting to be a better person and actually taking initiative to try to better yourself is one of the best traits you can have.
The argument does work (kinda) for the situation. The Unicorn required someone "pure of heart", not just "not evil", and doing good deeds for the sake of being considered a good person by others is selfish, and therefor not "pure of heart". You could argue that the actual reason Mabel wanted to do it was because she needed the hair to save her family, but the Unicorn disagreed, and based on how willing Mabel was to agree, it's more likely that her actual reasoning for doing it was just "I want to feel better about myself".
@@Mae11473 Yes, that is a selfish motivation. After this, the last filler episode (to which I still don’t know why it didn’t release earlier), and then we’re in the endgame… Edit: yeah, i know it technically benefits both Dipper and Stan, so it’s not really filler. not a filler episode hater, fyi, it’s always nice to have calm before the storm; I just don’t like why the production issues landed it here before the finale
@@natalimoinaThank you! Filler has a clear definition, but people overuse the term to mean any episode that isn’t 100% focused on the overarching narrative. But these episodes still provide important character development and worldbuilding, and the series would be far more shallow without them! Real filler refers episodes that pad the story in order to delay from the ending for monetary reasons. These episodes don’t fit that definition. The creator of Amphibia, Matt Braly, even said he dislikes the overuse of the term “filler”, and that none of the episodes of Amphibia count as that. The same can be said for Gravity Falls and The Owl House, and other shows like Avatar The Last Airbender. These series are tightly written and crafted with purpose all the way through, nothing is filller. Even episodes written later than the others and in less time still serve a purpose, because the writers know what they’re doing even on the fly. It bugs me how much people call things filler when they aren’t.

You really need to calm down with the Mable hate. She absolutely tries very hard to be good, but she does it in a way that _she_ would view as good, rather than what actually might be best for others a lot of the time. She’s 12 and selfish like everyone her age. Dipper is in his own little world constantly too, you just decided his own wants mattered more because you prefer his personality. His sacrifices are _his_ choice, and honestly a lot of what he wants is often unattainable anyway. And oh man, you are really not gonna be happy with where things in this show go if you keep looking at Mable’s character in the worst way possible. So… look forward to that I guess.
I know right? Like she is absolutely entitled to her own opinions but it makes watching her Gravity Falls reactions impossible for me, I always try and think “maybe she’ll like her eventually” but it’s clear she is definitely a Mabel Hater, which is really sad to me as someone that genuinely loves Mabel and has for years. With how much she hates her already I don’t see the final episodes changing her views on Mabel at all, in fact I think it’s gonna be skyrocket them, something of which I won’t be able to take.
Alex didn’t voice the unicorn, but I swear he’s half the GF universe. Not including a landslide of miscellaneous side characters, he voices- Grunkle Stan, Soos, Bill Cipher, Old Man McGucket and Young McGucket
It may be a filler episode, but clearly this episode took advantage of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic craze at the time this originally aired. And for the unicorn to go by a silly name like “Celestabellebethabelle?” Yeah. The name is clearly a spoof on the names of characters Celestia and Sweetie Belle, while sporting Rarity’s cutie mark.
@@twist58If missing or skipping an episode means you can't understand the plot of the show, then it's not "filler". And if you missed this episode and its revelations about Ford's past with Bill, then you'd have missed a HUGE piece of info that's important to how the rest of the show is going to play out. (I mean, I don't believe in the concept of "filler", anyway; but it seems particularly silly to apply that to a plot-heavy episode.)
Mabel is a special woman and she punched a unicorn. Wendy is right about women. The unicorn fighting was epic. My favorite parts are 8:01, 8:43 and 12:52 🦄🦄🦄🤣🤣🤣
I feel like you're going to love this episode because Mabel is actually getting the proper character development that you've been waiting for. Or rather that she's realizing her bad actions.
In this episode we can see Ford's reluctance to reveal the relationship he previously had with Bill, and after the new Book Of Bill was released, many theorized that this bond between them may have been something romantic or close to it. In addition to the information given from Bill's perspective in the new book and the somewhat suspicious mentions in the physical Journal 3 (which can be purchased irl), we also have an official comic by Alex Hirsch, where Dipper and Mabel are holding Journal 3 in their hands and Dipper says: "So Great Uncle Ford was dating someone called 'muse'?", and the next comic shows that they are reading the pages about Bill. These are small but interesting details that can change our perspective.
Some fun facts I’d like to share in case you haven’t checked out any supplementary material since finishing the show: The reason Ford’s house is decked out with triangular things and Bill-inspired designs everywhere is because when he and Bill were still “friends”, Ford intentionally decorated his house this way so Bill could peek into the real world through the mind scape easier. And also, the reason why there’s blood on the page warning people not to summon Bill Cipher? It’s because when Bill used to move in and out of Ford’s mind, that eventually caused Ford’s right eye to bleed as a side effect. Not even joking.
Something notable that I’m not sure you noticed- Stan had that very same swing set in his mind during ‘Dreamscapers’, which played before we found out about Ford. Foreshadowing ✨
And in Stan's mindscape, one of the swings is broken. Meanwhile, in Ford's dreamscape, the swing-set is intact. Interesting contrast, no? The other thing I really like about those objects in Ford's dreamscape is that the Stan o' War is closest to him, and looms the largest. The swing-set is the next closes. And the broken Portal is far away, and smaller. I think you could interpret that symbolism in a number of ways (that is, there probably isn't a "right" answer, it's left to the viewer to think about). (About the swing-set in Stan's mind -- I remember people pointing out that the broken swing is the one that kid Stan was sitting on, in the end-credit sequence of NWHS. And that's true -- but their positions are reverse in the last scene on the swing-set, when they're teenagers and Stan realizes that Ford wants to go away to college. So you could interpret the broken swing either way -- that it's connected to Stan, or to Ford. Or you could just interpret the broken swing-set as symbolic of the broken sibling relationship... but then that still makes it really interesting that in Ford's adult mindscape, the swing-set isn't broken.)
@@gryphonvert I’d like to add on to that with some spoilers for anyone in the future: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Despite his grudge, Ford actually held onto some old family photos, even one of him and Stan when they were kids and playing with the original Stan O’ War. He pulled it out and showed it to Stan once he suggested they live out their childhood dream at the end of the series. Just goes to show you that despite his anger, he still loved his brother. 🥲
Interesting story for this one, Alex always wanted to nail a Wendy episode (one was meant for this slot), but couldn't quite do, and scrapped it for this (she's still great in it though). Hence things like Alex being the sole writer, and a reference to the pug trafficking from last time.
I grew up with this show when it came out and I remembered a lot of the episodes especially this one because I loved it when the unicorn told her off because she deserved it in my opinion.
"Mabel is doing good deeds for the wrong reason, she shoud be doing it from the goodness of her heart, not to get the hair" somewhat fair point but, you have to realize that the whole Pines familys safety depends on whether she gets what shes asked to or not. also spending your whole life thinking you are a good person, only for a magical creature (which you think has the power to see inside your heart) just straight up tells you "you f*cking suck actually." is definitely a tough pill to swallow, especially for a 12yo. i love Mabel because she has so many flaws, everybody sucked when they were 12, Dipper also had done selfish stuff. (long ass rant, damn)
These mfs when they see child accidentally killing someone:But he/she just a child, you can't blame him/her for that, they just learning🥺 Yet we fine with killing kids in helluva boss.
After multiple rewatches if this episode I always come to the same conclusions: Dipper and Ford need therapy and Celestabellbethabelle just murdered that flower for no reason
i don't want to sound like a hater but i just gotta say ... in NMM , you rambled for like 10 minutes about how annoyed you are about mabel's boyz crazy thing and how it's her " only " personality trait ( which is entirely wrong but whatever) but ... with alla that you didn't even tried to bother to think about it even for a second that " why is she like this " " why does she act the way she does " " does she by any chance have someone insecurity or sth " like you look WAY too deep into each of her mistakes but don't bother to dig even a bit into her character , and it's getting REALLY annoying
It screams "Internalized Misogyny" tbh. She never says a thing about Dipper being weird and creepy towards the girls Maybe also because she's a lesbian so she will see Dipper crushing on a lot of girls and will be like "Ehehe, same" But idk man as a lesbian woman I love Mabel and I didn't find her boy crazy thing to be weird at all, she's just 12! It's understandable
Mabel is supposed to be based on Alex's twin sister Ariel, but that still doesn't make any sense, I highly doubt that Ariel would even spy on someone, steal people and keeping them, choose her crush over Alex..
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 Of course it's exaggeration, Ariel wouldn't do such things, and it's another confirmation that Mabel's not 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 inspired by Ariel.
@@Rayni_XZ.o Why would a character based on a real person be fully based on them? Unless the character is supposed be like those celebrity show protagonists then that would be creepy. So not being fully based on them is necessary.
Elijah, I know Mabel is very selfish 80% of the episodes & 20% she's not but I feel like she does truly care about others but she just gets easily distracted. My little sister is the same thing so I'm used to that behavior & she's watching Gravity Falls & understanding how she behaves & trying to heal that. Sam Marin does Celestebellebethabelle's voice not Alex but she does sound like Hooty a bit right?! The deleted unicorn fight was really funny I wish they got that In there though. In Dipper's thoughts, he should try the president's key that Quentin Tremblay gave him in Irrational Treasure & that's sad that he misses his clone Tyrone from Double Dipper. In Ford's thoughts Crampelter was the name of the bully who called him a six-fingered freak in A Tale Of Two Stans even as a 60-year old man now, in the Nightmare Realm he still thought about that asshole & how much he was severely bullied. The way the pugs are drawn are so cute P.S. I WANT ONE!!!! I really love Wendy so much!!! She's so cool and badass!!! your definetly going to see more of her badass-ness in the Grand Epic Finale. Robots & Jumanji reference I love it, we love you Robin. Next is the last episode before the endgame can't wait for you to see it & for the finale you should wear a Gravity Falls shirt & Dip's hat. After Gravity Falls what new Disney Channel shows or shows & movies will you be reacting to next? My suggestions are Hailey's On It! Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, Kiff, Pokemon Horizons & Ghostbusters Frozen Empire.
Ford went to more lengths than just a plate in his head to fight off Bill. He planned to make a whole Bill-proof suit but never finalized it and was attacked by Zom-Bills in the process (yes, he can possess corpses). He locked himself out of the Portal lab using a retinal scanner and woke up the next day with his hands completely mutilated and the door coated in blood and scratch marks. Eventually Bill started speaking through post-its: Can we talk? NO! Pretty Please? I'D RATHER DIE! Oh, don't be so dramatic I'm an Author, we're all dramatic. HEY, wanna hear a joke? NO Knock! Knock? Not Now! I have a headache That's because I've been knock-knocking your skull against the wall! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA STOP WASTING MY POST-IT NOTES! Ford thought he could be Cipher at his own game by annoying him out of his but that was when he touched a nerve. Bill caught him in a dream he didn't know he was having and threatened to turn his life into Hell if he didn't turn on the portal. That's why he called Stanley for help, he couldn't take any more of it
Now this is an episode that definitely builds on the overarching story, and is quite fun to watch. I mostly like the story with Dipper and Ford, and how we get to see how Ford, much like Dipper, has a history with everyone’s favorite maniacal triangle who thrives on chaos.
theres an old story where a man goes to a rabbi and says he wants to build an orphanage. later, he returns to the rabbi and says "I decided not to, I only wanted to build the orphanage to make myself look good for caring about orphans". and the rabbi says, "the orphans don't care why you built the orphanage. they just want a place to live." It's very simplified but it tells the truth
The "trust no one, trust no one" moment also really solidifies that Mabel was the only one who could have brought back Ford. If it had been Dipper's choice to press the button and turn off the machine, or trust his uncle and potentially destroy the world, he would never have done it. He's too logical. It HAD to be Mabel. I know you're not a fan of Mabel, and I have my qualms with her as well, but only leading with your heart is no more reckless than only leading with your head. There has to be balance, and that's why these two NEED each other.
Fun fact: There was supposed to be an actual fight scene between the girls and the unicorns, but it was cut for time. There's animatics of the scene and lemme tell ya, we was robbed!
People in the comments hating on Mabel even though she’s a child and god forbid children don’t act with the mindset of a fully matured adult. We all did dumb stuff when we were 12. Cut this literal child a bit of slack people.
Okay so idk if you've seen Episode 2x16 yet, but if you haven't, my advice would be that 2x16 is a lot easier to enjoy if you imagine it taking place earlier in the show.
Spoilers ⚠ I'm commenting on a line from this episode, but reflecting on what it means for the rest of the series "We're not the first two idiots to be tricked by Bill. But if we work together, we could be the last." Omfg. It was right there. And he STILL was adamant that everyone else should be kept in the dark. I feel like he should know full well that Bill doesn't only come after intelligent people like himself and Dipper, that the entire Pines family would be targets even if only some of them are aware of the rift. Ford, you really are an idiot 😭
Random Fun Fact: The moon landing didn't happen in the Gravity Falls universe. It's implied that Bill helped fake it in order to try and get NASA to build his portal XD
Nope, not the future. Just gassing up an arrogant, selfish man. He’s not a hero. I find myself troubled by the way you speak of Mabel. You aren’t very accepting of certain types of character. Why is Dipper ok when just this episode we see him being girl crazy (always thinking of Wendy), being selfish but forgiving himself for it (trying to force his way into an unwilling person’s mind), and then panicking thoughtlessly and trying to attack someone. Honestly he was clearly the one in the wrong here. But everyone likes him? What’s the difference I wonder? I’m gonna unsubscribe now.
I only just realized it, but Ford saying that the unicorn hair can only be obtained by a creature with a pure heart implies that he fell for the unicorn's scam before, which I just find funny.
Ford seems to take a lot of things at face value.
I like how this implies the unicorns told Ford he isn't pure of heart and he was just like "you know what, that's fair" and left XD

I still have no idea how the hell Alex Hirsch got away with that butterfly/fairy dust deal turned sting operation scene. Apparently, he doesn't either. There's something I find incredibly funny about them taking unicorns, usually depicted as such whimsical, wholesome creatures, and saying, "Nah, they're assholes."
In the commentary for this episode, Alex Hirsch goes on like a 5 minute rant about how much he hated the unicorn in The Last Unicorn as a kid lmao
I think they went down that same route in Billy and Mandy?
The other two unicorns don't seem too bad. They're still dirty scammers, but they don't seem to approve of Celestebebelle rubbing in the idea of Mabel not being pure of heart. They seem like the kind of scammers that would tell people pure hearts are rare, and not having one doesn't make you a bad person. Just human. Followed by this exchange:
"Really?" 🥹
"Yeah, whatever. Just keep your hands off our hair." 🦄🙄
I personally like Pliny's description of the unicorn in 77 BC, claiming to quote the original Greek depiction of the unicorn by Ctesias in 398 BC (which was most likely an Indian rhinoceros): a beast with "the body of a horse, head of a stag, feet of an elephant, and tail of a boar", with a single horn "at least a cubit long and colored white at the base, black in the middle, and bloody crimson at the tip", that was extremely foul-tempered and hunted its prey by chasing it down and goring it with its horn.
congratulations my guy you just discovered irony
Kinda Fun fact: This episode was the replacement for a Wendy episode that was scrapped relatively late in production, so this one was written by Alex Hirsch over only a single day. Apparently Wendy would've gotten weather powers.
Like Storm from X-Men?
Nice D20 icon
@@Saleems010 Agreed!!!
Really? Never knew that
Whaaaaaat? Oh come on, a Wendy-centric episode would’ve been so cool!
(No spoilers, just thoughts below.)
I was still a teenager when this episode aired.
(spoilers below)

particularly with asking dipper to take on his apprenticeship once summer ends instead of going to high school... this kid is 13 years old and can't be hiding out in a cabin with his great uncle instead of growing up and socializing and doing healthy kid stuff. In defense of Mabel, she IS 12, children are annoying, and make stupid/selfish decisions sometimes. And it’s not necessarily an excuse, and if people dislike her character that’s totally fine but I feel like she gets an excessive amount of hate for a child being realistically bad sometimes. It’s definitely annoying sometimes but some people take it too far
absolutely, It`s like hatig Sakura for calling Naruto an orphan. She was like 14 or 15 and had no idea what pain Naruto was going through.

@@lilxgraveyardxshawty420 Well no, it's that Dipper does it in a way that forwards the plot, so people are more partial to him. Mabel's actions are for the moment, but Dipper's tend to be for the future, so his selfishness is _regularly_ overlooked.

Surprisingly, not any of the stuff in this episode iirc
If anyone's confused by the pugs: pugs rhymes with drugs. It's meant to be like Stan is trafficking drugs but PG lol

Literally the only good thing that this unicorn did was making Mable more self-aware of how poorly she’s been treating Dipper.

Favorite line from that episode is this
Wendy: We're not unicorns, we're women! And we'll going to take what we want!
Fun fact, they animated Mabel and co fighting the unicorns but it got cut, Disney said it was too violent
Ford’s stunned facial reaction to Mabel’s last line is my favorite part of this episode
One of my favorite episodes in the whole series. That woodland drug deal-turned-sting operation, complete with dirty cop, is probably the most messed-up thing I've ever seen in a Disney show. It was fantastic.
Also, Mabel punches a unicorn in the face. 10/10, no notes.
It's ok if you don't believe that genuinely good people exist, maybe they don't, but saying "good people don't exist, therefor Mabel is a good person" isn't really a logically consistent argument. But if your point is, "Sure, Mabel isn't a great person, but so aren't most people", I'm not going to disagree.
Mabel its literally a child, she might be a little over the top sometimes but she is literally just vibing and shes learning how to be a better person while doing so!

it's not filler, there's no filler in the first place

She’s 12 and selfish like everyone her age. Dipper is in his own little world constantly too, you just decided his own wants mattered more because you prefer his personality.
"But how far will they go with that apocalyptic idea?"
Girl, you have no idea. I mean, it`s a 4-part-finaly, that`s all I`m gonna say.
Some fun facts I’d like to share in case you haven’t checked out any supplementary material since finishing the show:
The reason Ford’s house is decked out with triangular things and Bill-inspired designs everywhere is because when he and Bill were still “friends”, Ford intentionally decorated his house this way so Bill could peek into the real world through the mind scape easier. And also, the reason why there’s blood on the page warning people not to summon Bill Cipher? It’s because when Bill used to move in and out of Ford’s mind, that eventually caused Ford’s right eye to bleed as a side effect. Not even joking.
Alex Hirsh definitely had some magic of his own to get away with stuff like that!😂 12:01
Something notable that I’m not sure you noticed- Stan had that very same swing set in his mind during ‘Dreamscapers’, which played before we found out about Ford.

This also explained why when if go back and watch tale between two Stan’s when Stan comes to the shack Ford checks his eyes for Bill

It screams "Internalized Misogyny" tbh. She never says a thing about Dipper being weird and creepy towards the girls
Maybe also because she's a lesbian so she will see Dipper crushing on a lot of girls and will be like "Ehehe, same"
But idk man as a lesbian woman I love Mabel and I didn't find her boy crazy thing to be weird at all, she's just 12! It's understandable
Mabel is supposed to be based on Alex's twin sister Ariel, but that still doesn't make any sense, I highly doubt that Ariel would even spy on someone, steal people and keeping them, choose her crush over Alex..
@@Rayni_XZ.o I’m pretty sure the spying & obsession stuff is just a exaggeration for comedy. By that logic Alex’s actually uncle did nasty crimes.
So not being fully based on them is necessary.
after the dust deal scene i really started to imagined how gravity falls could be if it would be for mature audience .. definetly would be HILARIOUS
Fun fact: Billford is hinted in the book of Bill to be more than just a platonic relationship on Bill part but not Fords :3
it's sad to see how much you don't like mabel. i mean i get that the whole "boy crazy" stuff was annoying but she's 12.
Exactly and especially since Mabel was based off of Alex’s twin sister, whom was very “boy crazy” when she was a kid.
P.P.S. I love the Harry Potter reference.
Eventually Bill started speaking through post-its:
Can we talk?
NO!
Pretty Please?
I'D RATHER DIE!
Oh, don't be so dramatic
I'm an Author, we're all dramatic.
HEY, wanna hear a joke?
NO
Knock! Knock?
Not Now! I have a headache
That's because I've been knock-knocking your skull against the wall! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
STOP WASTING MY POST-IT NOTES!
Idk if you noticed but on Mabel’s “good deeds” list she had crossed out “abolish electoral college”
That's exactly what Bill wanted
Fun fact: There was supposed to be an actual fight scene between the girls and the unicorns, but it was cut for time. There's animatics of the scene and lemme tell ya, we was robbed!
"How crazy are they gonna go with this apocalyptic idea?"
Yes.
“Give me big anime eyes!”
Thank you for the “Robots” reference
For a person like me who doesn’t like Unicorns, this episode is and will always be an absolute banger 😂
3:08 is an adult joke because its illegal "pug smuggling"
The title and The Unicorn design are a reference to the Novel by Peter S. Beagle and the movie produced by Rankin Bass.
People in the comments hating on Mabel even though she’s a child and god forbid children don’t act with the mindset of a fully matured adult. We all did dumb stuff when we were 12. Cut this literal child a bit of slack people.
Kids ain't doing drugs, stealing people and committing vandalism
@@Rayni_XZ.o Neither is Mabel, hope that helps!
Okay so idk if you've seen Episode 2x16 yet, but if you haven't, my advice would be that 2x16 is a lot easier to enjoy if you imagine it taking place earlier in the show.
Personal I think this episode should’ve came AFTER the one after 2x16
I honestly think 2x16 should've been in the first half of the season.
@@GeorgeHarold1 yeah exactly like before “Northwest Mansion Mystery”
@fantasy-artist4425 I heard that episode was misplace and it was supposed to air way earlier that's why you don't see stan Ford in that episode
@@GreenTeam-re3jy how much earlier
@@fantasy-writer-v5z like around the mansion episode or the love god
Spoilers ⚠ I'm commenting on a line from this episode, but reflecting on what it means for the rest of the series
"We're not the first two idiots to be tricked by Bill.
I do like Mabel more then her brother if we’re being honest but my favorite character of the series is bill.
My favourite are also Bill, Stan and Mabel
The pink unicorn playing rave music got me dancing!! LOL!!!
There's actually a full deleted scene above like the girls trying to fight the ponies.
Fun Fact: there's delete scene of the entire fight scene between the Girls and The Unicorns.
