    EDIT: I have revised my opinion on Renna, she is not Rennala, however Rennala is aware of Renna and led Ranni to her. More details coming in a future video.
    My audio got cut off at the end so to reiterate: the next video will be uncovering the Mysterious of the Eclipse and Castle Sol, there is more that we can know than you might think!
    Please consider subscribing and sticking around for more Elden Ring lore and theory videos!

      Here's something I've always entertained;
      The Rune of the Unborn was Marika's, and Radagon got it from her by stabbing that spear through her womb, as we see it when we enter the Erdtree before the two were one.

    I don't believe Ranni is the biological daughter of Renalla, I believe she was birthed from the amber egg, created by Marika/Radagon. As such an empyrean(born of a single god). I also believe this is why the egg recieves the great rune after the shattering, its the closest thing to Ranni's body. Much like all the other descendents of Marika recieve a great rune after the shattering. When Marika shattered the Elden Ring(Herself) it dispursed its runes(power) to hosts which carry the same compatability as Marika, her DNA.
    Of course this is just an opinion and be wrong with the DLC release but this was my conclusion from what is available in the game.
    Fantastic video, I really enjoy the way you present the information like a story. Sometimes lore videos can feel like a lecture but yours are entertaining and not a chore at all.

      Haha thank you! I understand that lore videos can be sometimes more info dumps but I want to be creative outside of just editing video, I want to tell the story that I think is present in Elden Ring.
      I think there is a misconception with the “born of a single god” line, I don’t think it’s that Empryeans are only born of a single god but because the twins were born of a single god they have to be empyreans.
      Think of the scenario, Radagon(who is Marika) is sent to fight in Liurnia and not Godfrey, the Lord of the Battlefield. Rennala has some Nox or Numen heritage based on the Nightmaiden statue at the church of vows, the Umuri(night folk whip found in the Carian manor) and the Nox Well found at the Moonlight Altar.
      The wars end with a marriage between someone who could have Numen/Nox genetics and someone who is Numen(Radagon/Marika), then one of their children born is an Empryean. I think the goal for the whole Liurnia Wars was possibly to birth an Empyrean, like Ranni.
      I hope that makes sense, thank you the praise and thank you for sharing your thoughts on the story!

    I truly loved your previous video and I’ve long thought there’s no way a woman like Rennala was mourning for a man, be him a god or not, the way Rennala was mourning. It seemed so obvious to me that it was her daughter that has broken her heart. Her little moon.
    I absolutely love the lore of Elden ring and it’s delivery in the game medium. I love listening to people interpret the lore as well but there are few interpretations that I adore nearly as much as experiencing the world for myself in game. A really special treat has been piecing your videos together with kosmos’, tarnished archaeologist’s and jarhed’s to make some affirmations to observations and conclusions I’ve made about the lands between and beyond for quite a while now, with minor alterations of course. Your videos and theirs are on my list for lore content I enjoy nearly as much as exploring the lore for myself.
    Thank you for your tremendous contributions to the Elden ring lore community online. Even as a “late comer” I imagine the community is going to embrace your content quite hungrily and happily as they unveil it.
    Can’t wait for your next video!

      That’s very kind of you to say, and it really makes me very happy to hear. Writing this script made me feel something when considering what losing a child could mean for a mother, my voice literally trembled during the first reading of the wedding ring line.
      These games are very special, and no two people will have the same understanding of the story as each other. My goal is to share my interpretation of the story not to convince people that my understanding is supreme or right, but to add to the conversation and maybe entertain people.
      So thank you, it means a lot. I have a lot more on the way, this is just the tip of iceberg.

      @@JackisaMimic I also heard your voice quiver when you said “daughter” as you were explaining the night of the black knives and the deaths of Godwyn and Ranni.
      I thought I was the only one who felt so much compassion for Rennala because I have heard so many people write her off as a fragile woman, broken by her love for a man who would just leave her for another woman.
      Firstly, it’s clear to me now that I’m not the only one after this video and it’s part of why, even after just two videos, you’re already among my very favourites!
      Secondly, it astounds me how many people adore and admire characters like Radahn, Godfrey and Maliketh because they’re chads, but see women such as Rennala, Melanie and Marika without any nuance at all, as though George R R Martin and Miyazaki would really write so many selfish, tilted, fragile and hollow female characters whilst making these male characters monolithic archives of idealised masculine perfection.
      I know this is making me sound like a feminist or something, but as a woman in this space who has heard countless times how selfish and awful Melania is for carpet bombing Caelid(when I think it’s obvious she was attempting to help Miquella complete the eclipse ritual that would allow Godwyn’s soul to cross over, back into his body), how weak and pathetic Rennala is for daring to have a broken heart (and incorrectly attributing it to Radagon as opposed to acknowledging the tremendous love and bond she shared with her daughter) and lastly how everyone sees Marika as this awful selfish wretch who used up her husband, spit him out and stole another woman’s husband like this is the ghetto or something 🤣😂
      Anyway! Thank you for your nuanced and compassionate takes and I cannot wait for your next video!

    Ive watched most of the major From Soft lore/model youtubers like Zullie, VaatiVidya, Tarnished Archaeologist, STG, Hawkshaw etc. I know all about Radagon and Rennala. But your video is great.
    Heres one I have never seen any ER youtuber point out that I noticed on my own and then went back and pulled the image off the internet to make sure I saw what I thought I did in game. And, ya - I did.
    Pull a pic of the Erdtree Door off the internet. Theres a couple really good ones where people spliced together the image to show the Door in full.
    Look right in the center of the door, above the rings. The base of the erdtree is stylistically rendered as female genitals being penetrated by the shape coming off the rings. Once you see it, you cant unsee it. Its pretty obvious.
    Theres a *lot* of symbolism in the Door, but I have yet to see anyone specifically discuss that particular aspect. Is it just an artist sneaking something lewd in? Doubtful, considering the heavy symbolism of life, death, rebirth, offspring etc in the game.
    Could be an interesting vid topic, the themes shown on the Erdtree Door.

      Oh boy you'll love this then. Check out the intro cutscene for Dark Souls when the camera pans into the Archtree, it also looks, lets say "maternal", as do the Humanity Sprite icons. I don't think youre seeing things, Miyazaki's most apparent artistic influence is the masterpiece manga Berserk by the late Kentaro Miura and to say there is sexual symbolism in Berserk would be an understatement.
      Im glad you enjoyed my video! I have many other scripts drafted for my understanding of the Elden Ring lore and story that I do not think will disappoint. Please stay tuned!

      Awesome! Really looking forward to it. I *love* the lore and multiple layers of story and symbolism in Fromsoft games, and the way they tell their stories. Its kind of like real life. Youre dropped in the middle of it and you get bits and pieces of whats going on from the perspective of people you talk to. But no ones neatly packaging an overarching cut and dried story with a clear narrative for your consumption, its left for you to figure out by observation and discussion to come to your own conclusions.
      So much media nowadays beats you over the head with any symbolism. Like "SEE THIS? ITS A SYMBOL. SEE IT? IT MEANS (this)!", as if youre too stupid to notice on your own. And the same for stories. Nothing is left for the reader/player/watcher to come to their own conclusions.
      Im def going to go look at that cutscene now- I love hidden symbolism like that and I never caught that one before
      I look forward to more vids from you, happily subbed!

    Huh your timeline is a little weird. You say the Night of the Black knives happened while Radagon was living with Renalla in Liurnia and that Ranni's death wouldve been the first reason for Renalla's depression. But the thing is I always thought that Godwyn met Miquella and Malenia before his death so before the Night of the Black Knives. So in my understanding the Night of Black Knives wouldve happened after Radagon returned to the Capital, that is, after Godfrey was sent away by Marika and some time after Marika and Radagon became one to create Miquella and Malenia.
    Maybe I misunderstood the lore but I always pictured Godwyn interacting with Miquella, considering Miquella's explicit love and devotion for him (also the statues of the 3 of them together in the Heligtree) and somehow trying to revive Godwyn after his death with a ritual involving an eclipse and the Castle Sol (as the ghost NPC in the end of Castle Sol says.
    So I was wandering where you would put the shattering of the Elden Ring event in the timeline and what you think about Godwyn having or not having interactions with Miquella and Malenia before his death.
    Anyways looking forward to the next lore video, keep it up!

    • @JackisaMimic
      @JackisaMimic  8 месяцев назад +7

      Right, that is the common consensus of the timeline, that Godwyn and Miquella had some relationship prior to the NOBK.
      But there are so many things we don’t know and can’t say with certainty. Can we say for certaint that the Empryean twins were born before the Radagon invaded Liurnia? Mohg and Morgott are a pair of twins born by Marika who were kept secret to the world, couldn’t the other twins be a secret too?
      I don’t think you have a misunderstanding, I think the story is purposefully written in a way to make us assume one thing but with Causality and Regression analysis we can start uncovering what’s really going on.
      My next video will explore the eclipse, and all the players involved, including Miquella and Godwyn. I think the conclusions I come to in that video will help make sense of placing the Night of the Black Knives before Godfrey’s banishment.
      I promise the theories on this channel will be like none you have seen before, and they will have in game evidence that supports their validity!
      Edit: Read Rogiers dialogue. He tells us that Godwyn’s death happened during the age of the Erdtree and a long time before the Shattering.

    • @Mawal28
      @Mawal28 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@JackisaMimic so you are saying the "shattering of the Elden Ring" and the "Shattering" are the same thing? Cause I just thought the shattering of the elden ring was the moment Marika broke the Elden Ring after burrying Godwyns corpse at the roots of the Erdtree and the shattering wars would have happened after she broke it. Cause then she would have been imprisoned and gone missing, leaving the throne open, which led to the wars between her demigod children to take the throne.
      Ok ok I'll wait for the next video

    Rennala's slow and steady downfall from being a mighty Sorcerer, to queen and then a grieving mother reminds me of "Fire and Blood" and "ASoIaF" trope of motherhood. Many powerful women characters losing their mind due to the loss of their children or the act of bearing a child. How Aemma Targaryen said "We have royal wombs, you and I. The childbed is our battelfield. We must learn to face it with a stiff lip."
    Another great video man!

      This was the first theories I wanted to share, and I hope to “remake” this video in the future. While most think Rennala’s pain comes from her husband leaving it is more in line with her losing her daughter. I was thinking of Cat’s chapters when thinking of Rennala, and her headspace when Bran is hurt or her last chapter at the Red Wedding.
      Hell, the Tully colors are the same as Carian colors and both woman have to deal with their husbands being recalled to the capital by the leading royalty!
      Happy you enjoyed this one! Rennala and Ranni’s relationship is one of my favorite storylines in Elden Ring

  • @Quader417
    @Quader417 8 месяцев назад +6

    I think my MAIN question with the implication that the night of black knives happening before godfrey was banished is that implies Miquella and malenia never even met godwyn and ranni. So why in the golden court does Morgott say that both the twins and Ranni had thrones yet Godwyn has no seat. Also why would Miquella be so desperate to complete Godwyns death if they have never even met? Sure it’s still his brother but i dont think most people would go on the crusade Miquella did for a family member that died long before they were ever born

    • @JackisaMimic
      @JackisaMimic  8 месяцев назад +4

      Thank you for bringing up this speculation, these are the exact type of questions that I want viewers of my content to ask! I hope that you enjoyed my video, and that the way I presented Rennala's and Ranni's relationship made sense.
      The way I view the lore and story of Elden Ring is very different than the common consensus, I think there are a lot of assumptions that have been made without clear enough evidence that muddies our understanding of what is actually going on.
      For example, can we say with absolute certainty when the Empyrean twins were born? We know Radagon is Marika, and they are their parents, but when did they have children together? It could have been before the Liurnia Wars, we do not know. We have evidence in game of Marika keeping twins secret via the treatment of the Omen twins, so I think that leaves open the possibility for the Empryean twins also having some unknowns around their birth.
      I hope you stay tuned to my upcoming videos, there are a lot of moving parts to Elden Ring and it takes a lot of work to get all the pieces together. My next video on the Eclipse will propose what I think is Miquella's motivation for interest in Godwyn, and it is not out of familia love.
      Please keep asking questions, if you ask the right questions you may find the answers for youself!

      Everyone was desperate to kill Godwyn. He was corrupting the very foundations of the world they live in. Thata why Marika's own assasins are the ones who carried it out. Thats why his body is still in THE SAME PLACE AND POSITION it was in when he was slain. Look at his corpse. His arm is still up and out. He was never moved.
      Rogier, the guy who never left Limgrave and who is sleeping with Godwyns chief lieutenant Fia, is not the best source of information on the night of black knives. (The whole set up is a murder mystery, but everyone takes the first theroy they get as the truth, that's just silly)
      At the very least we know that his theroy of how Ranni and Godwyn both partially died is a lie. Sellen proves that. Carian Mages save their souls in Glintstone to prevent their souls from dying, not by slaying other people. So we need another explanation for why Godwyn hasn't died. And Fia provides us an answer. She takes the life of heroes and champions and gives their life energy to Godwyn. She tells us thats what she is doing.
      Ranni stole the rune of death so SHE could kill her mortal body. What the assassins did with the other pieces she didn't really care. And think about it, how could Godwyn be "the first dead" if he died simultaneously with Ranni? He couldn't. He would have had to die FIRST.
      And I know when Godwyn died. He died outside Stormcaller Church. When he fought Fortissax. The monument reads "He fought to the last against dread Fortissax"
      "Fought to the last" MEANS no survivors. Like the 300 spartans. It means everyone died. (The Japanese says he fought "like a hero" which also implies he died, Japanese heroes don't surrender they die fighting or fall on their swords) Then the immortal dragon Fortissax brought him back the same way she continues to do so. Fortissax becomea Fia and revives him with the life of heros and champions, and eventually with the life straight from the Erdtree. Corrupting everything. Thats why Marika sent her assasins with a Rune of Death down to try to stop him. He would corrupt the Erdtree its self.
      Thats why theres deathroot in Faram Azula. Despite no physical link with the ground its self. Dragons were engaging in this dark magic since time immemorial.
      So in conclusion, Rogier is full of shit, Ranni did nothing wrong, Godwyn is the big bad, Fia is Fortissax, Miquella is afraid Godwyn is gonna mess everything up for him. Thats about the whole story.

      @@JackisaMimic no problem dude i just found your page but your content seems awesome. I like all elden ring pages big and small here’s some smaller ones just in case you’re not aware of them already: ‘Elden Tales’ ‘A Human Justicar’ ‘Garrulous Goldmask’ ‘Emerald Gecko’ just to name a few u should check them out if u haven’t already they make similar thought provoking content.
      I could follow your line of logic and there was very little u said that i felt like there’s enough evidence to flat out disprove in the game so thats a good sign because a lot of channels I’ll see will make claims that i feel like have very little supporting evidence but here i feel like u made small logical strides that fit and make sense. But i very much agree that there’s a lot of assumptions made without the strong evidence so i try to keep an open mind.
      I think a lot of ppl assume the empyrean twins were born after Godfrey’s banishment bc Godfrey was Marikas consort but even the shortest glimpses at history shows us that royals are very rarely “loyal” and will often have multiple mistresses(in this case misters?) and they aren’t even a secret so while Miriel and everyone else was confused why Marika decided to MARRY Radagon that statement says very little about their prior relationships bc often royals would sleep with servants and subordinates whoever they found attractive but only married those that boosted their political status so the population of the lands between was more than likely confused why marika would throw away such a strong political ally just for a mere champion.
      There really isn’t a lot of evident one way or another but i think ppl are assuming one with both are equally likely. But u do make a good point about how easily Marika can hide her secret’s literally under the noses of her followers.
      Personally i think if not for familial love Miquella wanted to complete Godwyns death so as to remove all of those that live in death and return destined death to the natural order… or there’s always the dark timeline where he wanted Godwyn to be resurrected as a sort of God of death and become his consort in the same way Mohg wanted to be but honestly kinda hoping that isnt the case but with George RR Martin and fromsoft combined honestly u never know💀 but yes I’ll definitely subscribe and keep up to date I’m sure you’ll here from me again at some point have a good one

      Another point is that Radagon is Marika, a lot of people assume that Radagon split off from Marika fully formed as an adult and fully aware of who he really was at that time. Like Marika came first and Radagon just split off from her as an adult male. Instead of like...maybe Radagon didnt know he and Marika were the same being- perhaps he was born to an unmentioned distant relative (we already know godrick was a far distant scion, so whos to say there werent others), he grew up and had a normal (by Lands Between standards, I mean) youth and grew into a Champion of the Golden Order and ended up with Rennala.
      But he had no idea who he really was. Then when Godfrey was banished (or some other point) he felt an unavoidable call instituted by the Greater Will (the Law of Regression) to go back and "become one" with his other half, and he couldnt resist it.
      I personally dont think he split off from Marika. I think he was more like a split soul who had no idea who he was until he felt the Law of Regression and Law of Causality and had to leave Rennala to be with Marika, and it was only at that time that his true nature was revealed to him.

    Nice Video, it let's me created new Theories to talk about😁 Are those Girls that are Born anew failed copies of Ranni?
    They can't walk like Female Albernaurics and they use Gravity Magic to throw Books at you. Also Ranni knows about her Mother's condition but she can only Protect her with Dark Magic we have only seen the Elden Beast use. The Power of Projection is something found by Raya Lucaria. And Radagon used that knowledge to Project a Shining Golden Erdtree after the Original Erdtree was Burned. That Explains the Ash we found in the Capital prior to the Burning we do with Melina.
    Also I believe that Melina is Radagon and the Gloam-Eyed Queens Daughter. Hear me out. After her Defeat by Maliketh, Radagon took that Child who was still just an Infant by that Time to the Capital and she was raised as a Maiden unbeknownst to her true Heritage.
    What I mean by that is that Radagon was created and only takes the Stage to deceive the Current Ruling Queen in One Era, makes Children with them, elevates them to Demi-God Status, takes them to Erdtree Capital to be raised by them, and Removes all traces of that prexisting Kingdom and her Queen. We all see that most Parts of Liurnia are sinking that's there peaceful Method, while Marikas Method was to Conquer.

    I personally do not think there is any correlation between the Night of the Black Knives and Godfrey's banishment, let alone causation. Godfrey is explicilty stated to have been banished almost as soon as his wars of conquest ended, and theres nothing I've heard to imply that happened around the Night of Black Knives from any single source.
    Thats why, in absensce of evidence, i have come to personally believe that what Tarnished Godfrey specifically was the birth of Morgot and Mohg. I mean, think of the scandal it likely would've been at all to anyone in the know, even if thats just the midwife and personal doctor/perfumer. Sure, it doesnt quite jell with the idea of Marika being the one to take grace away, but i dont buy that its something that comes from her to begin with. I dont think any specific person in the Lands Between does. Its either its own thing or the only 'true' manifestation of the Greater Will sans a mediator/vassal.
    Sure, there is Some logic to the idea that Night of Black Knives -> Godfrey Banished -> Radagon Recalled -> Elden Ring Shattered -> Shattering Wars. The issue is...we dont know how long ago that happened and ALL sources of Godwyn's demise/things that happened around that time are comming second or third hand by people who heard it from Godwyn's body being recovered.
    You mention Rogier in another comment and-we dont know how reliable his knowledge is or who he got it from? This game is chock full of dubious sources, people with personal agendas and biases, and very few first hand accounts. I don't trust Rogier's words, which are vague as heck, about the elapsed time (especially as theres no specification of if he means the ERS or the SW).
    However, given that Malenia is full grown, I don't believe the Night of Black Knives happened yet-unless you presume the twins were already born and thus are older than the Carian Royals or around the same age? I am of the personal opinion that theyre younger until theres proof about them being older, so ill go watch your other videos to see if you provide any proof for them to be born pre-Radagon's Lordship.

She is also a spirit, and so is Miquilla. All the evidence is there to support this theory, but no one wants to think about it unless RUclips says otherwise. Miquilla needs to control the darkmoon to make an eclipse. What is the moon during an eclipse??? A dark moon. Why does Melina have one blue eye and one yellow like the children scholars that Rennala keeps making? She has red hair just like "Ranni's" corpse in her tower and burns as well. Her hair turns black in the frenzied ending. Mom has black hair, and dad has red hair. It's all quite obvious when you think about it all. But you believe what you want. Again, unless RUclips says otherwise, no one thinks about these things.

      @JackisaMimic Also, Ranni needs you to kill Radahn her "brother" so she can obtain the darkmoon from Nokstella. Again, it makes more sense when you think that Miquilla is the Ranni doll. Another would be why did Malania need to travel from the Haligtree to kill Radahn? The blade of Miquilla aka Malania needed to kill Radan so she could travel to Nokstella for Miquilla to retrieve the dark moon.

    I think Marika, Renalla, and Philionore (Apostate Derilect) are sisters. Three Albinauric bodies with Three Minds and Three Souls. Similar to the Morrigan in Celtic Mythology. The next generation would be Ranni, Melenia, Melina, and Sullen. The Death Rite Birds (Corvus/Ravens/Crows in The Morrigan) are the link, their foot is marked on at least one eye with everyone from that next generation.

If you center the Site of Grace at Farum Azula/Maliketh to be in-between your legs and turn your players back to the Elden Ring, you can then perform the Erudition gesture and viola, it reveals that the Tarnished is the vessel from the beginning because of you could see their central nervous system then you would see it line up with the Elden Ring creating a merged root system for new age.

    Blaiid was a step brother and not a creature created by the GW?

    • @JackisaMimic
      @JackisaMimic  7 месяцев назад +3

      From Iji’s dialogue, “Blaidd is Lady Ranni's stepbrother. Ranni's mother, Queen Rennala, approved of him, and they played like siblings from childhood.”
      He is also explicitly called a “half wolf”, so half something and half wolf. If he’s a step brother he comes from Radagons side of the family, Radagon is Marika, and Maliketh is described as Marika’s half brother.
      So while Ranni tells us Blaidd was “created as a vassal for an Empryean” by the Two Fingers I’m not sure what that means. Could create mean they willed him into existence out of thin air , or did they force two people to mate(Marika and Maliketh for example) and then Blaidd was born.
      Him being a wolfman is also interesting because if we look at the Bloodhound items, or just think about dogs in general, they can be trained to do a task. Blaidd could just be a dog who was trained to do one thing by the fingers but chose to follow Ranni because he loved her.

      @@JackisaMimic Yeah I was thinking of Rannis dialogue and how he was driven to madness at the end of her quest line because what I had thought was the love for Ranni but devotion to the GW because he was a created vassal finally broke him.

      Well both can be true, he can be her step brother and “crafted” as her shadow. He is a half wolf, after all, I imagine the situation as dogs in real life who were trained for maybe a violent task since they’re puppies. Even if they get a new owner who they love and respect, if the “kill” command is given they may not be able to resist their training.

    • @JackisaMimic
      @JackisaMimic  8 месяцев назад +2

      I’m glad you brought this up, because I think many people believe this but no where in game is this stated, in fact the opposite is stated. I feel like I made it clear in the video but here is the evidence written out.
      Ranni explicitly calls Rennala the Last Queen of Caria during the phase transition of Rennala’s bossfight.
      Item descriptions associated with the Carian Queens are ambiguous. For example:
      the Stargazer Heirloom is engraved with the legend of “a” Queen. Nonspecific.
      Rennala’s Full Moon is similar: sorcery associated with “the Carian Queen”. Although the title of spell gives ownership to Rennala the description is nonspecific.
      Similar to how if I were to talk about the King or Queen of England, you would not know which one I was referring to unless I clarified.
      Items like the Discarded Palace Key mention that it has been passed down to Carian Princesses, this tells us that there have been generations of multiple Princesses for it to be passed down to, at the very least two and at the most is unknown.
      The Darkmoon Greatsword mentions that it’s bestowed “by a Carian Queen” to honor “long-standing tradition”, again non-specific to which Carian Queen and tells us outright this is tradition that has existed for a long time.
      I think this misconception comes from two places: one is Marika has been Queen for the entirety of the Age of the Erdtree and beyond, but she is a Numen who are long-lived and seldom born. Her title “the Eternal” could be related to her abnormally long life.
      Second is Rennala’s youthful appearance, which I think makes people believe she is an eternal Queen like Marika but there is a simple explanation to why she doesn’t age: the Amber Egg.
      Through the act of rebirth she can live eternally but eventually her wits faded, as seen in game and through items like the Juvenile Scholar Robes.
      I hope that all is clear. I do think the game purposefully tries to fool us into thinking Rennala is the first and only Queen of Caria but careful reconsideration of the items in game gives us the truth.
      Thank you for the comment and I hope my explanation was sufficient. Please consider subscribing for more videos!

    I enjoy the narrative spin, but you repeat yourself regarding the wedding ring. When you first mention it, you go into a lot of detail, but when you bring it up again about 10 minutes later, you say basically the same thing but give a snappier, more succinct description of the ring and its properties. I think the first mention could be cut. Lovely video, though be wary of assuming that Radagon ever cared for Rennala, even if the Amber Egg, taken at face value, seems to suggest he did. It seems to be a distraction.
