Gorilla Trekking, Uganda | Wildlife Photography | Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

- Welcome back to the wonderful Uganda!
On this very special journey I will be hiking, exploring, and adventuring through the incredible Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. Where I will be hiking with mountain gorillas in the wild. This was an experience of a life time and one that truly moved me.
On this trip I used my Fujifilm X-H2S, Fujifilm 23mm f/1.4 LM WR and the Fujifilm 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6. My equipment held up fantastically, especially in the very dark lit forest where I had to crack met ISO to a disturbing level! Thankfully, Adobe Lightroom has just made an DeNoise update!

Thank you very much! I was worried about my pictures, especially with the high ISO but the denoise feature in Lightroom definitely saved them. Aw thank you! I have to say, I adore that lens and the 33mm, they are both fantastic!

Insane location, such a unique experience. The mountain gorillas certainly did not disappoint! Neither did the 23mm F/1.4. It delivered some stunning shots. I've been eyeing that lens for a while now to accompany my 50mm F/1.0. 🤓
I also really enjoyed those close-ups with the 100-400mm. Very well done! And what a majestic creature that Silverback is! ☺
It really was! I’ve never been anywhere quite like it! They were so beautiful to watch and be amongst. And yes, the equipment held up fantastically! Especially in the dark forest. The 23mm is definitely one of my favourite lenses, it’s brilliant. And I was very chuffed with how the 100-400mm performed, especially in low light! 🙃🦍

Thank you! It was incredible! It varied as the gorillas were moving about, the silverback was always further away than the rest but most were about 5-15m away (obviously some shots in the trees were further away). My first shots were with a 23mm so you can see roughly how close they were there :)

Please note:The mountain gorilla (gorilla beringei beringei) has been reclassified as endangered from critically endangered by the IUCN on November in 2018 and there’s up to more than 1,063 of these iconic and underrated great apes left in East Africa’s Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic republic of the Congo (Formerly known as Zaire).
That is a very lovely quote, I like it a lot.
And yes, I think a lot of folk know they are critically endangered. It is such a shame as they are incredible creatures - as are all. It is great what the rangers and local people are doing in the national park to protect them 🦍
@@wildandfreevictoria No I said they were critically endangered but the IUCN reclassified them as now endangered along with the African bush elephant (Loxadonta Africana) also endangered from vulnerable since 2021.
Ooo right I do apologise - i read that wrong. That is bad! I thought they were still classes as CE - I must have heard this wrong when I was out there! Hmm I still think they need a good helping hand as it would be very sad to see them go!

Hello! Thank you! And yes the xh2s is fantastic, do you plan to do just photography or also filming? And no, these images were edited in Lightroom. I don’t tend to edit my images loads, I find Fujifilm colour science and tones fantastic straight out from the camera. The gorilla images were edited in LR using the denoise feature as I had my ISO very high (over 8000) to compensate for the dark forest but that being said the camera still did great picking up all the details 🙃

I wanted primarily for video but your pics were so amazing that i was wondering if its the colors of fuji straight out of camera or post work but thanx for letting me know. Hi! Such an insane travel vlog! I will be there in 2 months with my Fuji X-S10, and I'm struggling regarding which tele lens to buy in combination of the kit lens 18-55 f2.8-4.0: 55-200 or 70-300? I definitely suppose 70-300 is better for wildlife, but I fear that 70mm as minimum range would be a con and maybe swap lens in dusty or humid situations. What do you think about? Which of the 2 is better for an amateur photographer with no previous experience in wildlife? Thank you so much!
Thank you and how exciting for you! I bet you cannot wait! It is a tricky decision, it depends what shots you are looking at, like overall of the group of gorillas or specific close ups. I used my 23mm as well as my telephoto but the 23mm did feel a bit far away, I probably should have taken the 33mm or 56mm. Luckily for me it was too humid (i did have any issues with lens fog) or dusty, I just brushed past a tree right at the start when changing my lenses and got water on the sensor. If you can take a little lens pouch so you can easily access and swap lenses and free up your hands that would be the best. I think you might want the extra reach at, I was just looking back at my pictures and the close ups of the silverback and eyes of the gorillas was done at 400mm and the one of his whole body was 150mm. Where as the gorillas in the trees varies from 150-350. They are quite close when you are there so it’s your call which lens but I have a feeling you might want the extra reach at 300mm. I hope that gives you an idea and best of luck. AND have a wonderful time! 🙃
