At some point towards the end of your time in Gilman, you hit this pace that feels like traditional home video I might find in someone's VHS collection. With your mom and dad on this trip, this video felt extra sweet.
This is a wonderful comment, Marc, thank you!
I grew up in Gilman , graduated Gilman High School . My father was a machine operator , for The Illinois Central...... I remember The City of Miami and City of New Orleans , steam engines screaming through Gilman .
That's so awesome, thank you for sharing!
do you still live in Gilman I use to live their moved in 1974
my dad worked on ILLINOIS CENTRAL RR
You have your Dads eyes. Your folks seem super cool . I'd hangout with all yall anytime
Looks like your parents had fun... Great series, keep it up!
Thank you!
There was conflict, there was intrigue, and most importantly, there was a yellow car at 12:07
Thank you, I really appreciate both of the points you've made (the one about the conflict and the one about the intrigue).
"It's your ticket son; I'm here for the ride." Awwww
Love the “least used” stations in each state! This is one of my favorite part of Geoff Marshall’s videos. Great to have your parents in the video! They are really good sports! I think they enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Your parents seem like really cool people! And I didn't know your dad had a moustache lol
So cool seeing someone cover Gilman station! As someone living in Champaign, I always pass through here on the highway or Amtrak to/from Chicago. Never thought someone would come out here to cover it, I also never realized it was Illinois’ least-used station!
Seems like Gilman is more well-known than I thought! Thank you!
You and your family really sound like Boston. It's lovely.
I stop in Gilman for gas every time I drive between northern Chicagoland and Carbondale. It’s great seeing a video be made about the station there! Nicely done!
Thanks Miles! Glad to hear Gilman's getting some love.
I live in this town it is a lot of fun
Currently planning a trip to Gilman as we speak!
No way!
I constantly forget that you only have 1,000 subs. Such disrespect from the RUclips algorithm.
I appreciate it, thank you!
Love your videos. Take the Illini-Saluki train to Carbondale and ride the Saluki Express buses. You may even see me driving one.
When you watch the ads to compensate Miles for his mom’s $12…
Hahahaha, much appreciated, Omriqui!
You got your parents to enjoy an Amtrak trip, and I got my dad to agree that Metro North is the way to go into NYC! Looks like you had alot of fun on this trip; really fun video!
What are your parents opinions on pretzels? *really really important* question!
Thank you! I think both of my parents are fans of pretzels but not "take transit to the Snyder's factory" fans.
@@MilesinTransit I feel like that's something you would do! Local transit to the Snyder's factory in Hanover, PA coming soon?!?!
@@gamereric2189 It's already a video.
Semi-old-school Miles in Transit has you covered! ruclips.net/video/nszWurDtngI/видео.html
@@gamereric2189 How do I see that video about snyders factory?
Out of the hundreds of times, I’ve caught the train there, I think I’ve only had to walk across to that cement platform in the middle twice-but it was freaky to stand on that platform with the light of an oncoming freight train, bearing down as I hopped on an Amtrak
Your mom has a very nice voice! I'm glad you got to travel to east central Illinois!
This was really cool. Watching you explore this small midwestern town was fun. For a recommendation, try Princeton il
Looks really nice! Four trains a day in each direction ain't bad either.
My roommate my freshman year of college was from Gilman. His parents owned the Pizza Palace whose sign made an appearance at 12:15
14:27 Engineer: Oh my God, I actually have to pick people up from here!
Nice video - I took Amtrak cross country a few times with my parents years back. Have fond memories from those trips and all the interesting people we met on the train.
Shoutout to the man who enabled this with that ride on the MBTA 458 back in 2013!
Man, a year and two days from now it will have been 10 years since that first 459 post...
@@MilesinTransit oh, it was the 459! For some reason I though it was the 458
I am happy you made it to Illinois for your series
Luv your Mom and Dad. Miles you pick good ones!!
Just discovered this Gilman Illinois least used video. As a born and bred mid-westerner is it most satisfying.
There is a hook that immediately came to my mind which is that you kind of recapitulated the trip that Steve Goodman took that lead to the song "City of New Orleans". He had just married and he and his new wife took the train from Chicago down to Mattoon (a couple stops past Gilman) so he could be introduced to her grandmother. On the way back his wife fell asleep and by the time they got to Chicago he had the tune and two verses of the song. I guess this ride can be inspiring, in a flat mid-western sort of a way.
Thanks for the good work on least used stations.
Wow, that's a great story!
Your parents are so adorable!
You should travel from Gilman to Gilman! (Massachusetts to Illinois!)
Your the only other people I've seen make the trip to Gilman. I took my family there from Chicago many times to show them how affordable the homes are. We did like the McDonald's very much there but besides that i didn't meet any locals. Thank you for doing this video!
Great video. Your parents look like fun people
Thanks!
Miles, you're supposed to take your KIDS on boring family trips, not your parents!
I guess this'll have to do until I get some.
I did the same. My father always vacationed locally at the New Jersey shore and we always went in the family car. As a adult I always preferred to travel by train and vacationed in different cities. One year I took them to Chicago by train to see a horse race at Arlington Park. They enjoyed the trip including seeing the sites in Chicago. After that trip I convinced them to take other long distance train trips.
I never heard of Gilman either and I used to live on the west side of Chitown.
I was in Gilman today! Its one heck of a hike from main street to the station! You good fit people seemed to manage it easily. Good for you taking a little trip to Gilman, IL! Come back soon! ❤
Thank you!
Nice to meet Mr and Mrs In Transit, seems they enjoyed themselves :)
Your parents are troopers man…
Nice video! Glad to see the Illini train is all double decker now!
Thanks a lot! Did it used to use single-level coaches?
@@MilesinTransit Yeah At least from 2015-2019. There was one time when amtrak oversold tickets and they had to add a sightseeing car. That was pretty cool.
As someone who lives along this line -- Further information is submitted:
1. It's not double deckers every day, but it IS always at least 7 cars. Canadian National requires a minimum 8 car lengths for the defect detectors to activate.
2. Gilman and Rantoul [the next stop south] are flag stops -- you have to remind the conductor that you want to get off, and you have to flag down the train to get on. Unsure if there are any more flag stops on this route [or on the "Saluki", which is the morning train].
3. The "City of New Orleans" used to stop here; I cannot recall when that ended.
@@Silver_Turtle My Dad did His basic training at Rantoul in '84.
@@JimBones1990 We might have crossed paths -- I was there in '84 also [permanent party]. Not a time I really want to reflect on.
On the Google there appeared to have been a partial platform that served the second track, but it was recently removed.
Ha that was my brother Ardy getting off in Gilman. He said he spoke to you that day. Glad you guys had fun in Gilman Awesome video.
Whoa, that's awesome!! Thank you!

Beautiful train station
Love your parents. My mother would never agree to this. My dad would though.
Your parents are so nice
Fun vlog
Thanks!
I live 7 miles from Gilman and work there. Its funny your dad said its crazy that its only an hour south, i say the same thing about the chaos of Chicago only being an hour north.
Also Crossroads is great.
You make a good promoter to go see Gilman, IL. Who knows with your following you may get that stations numbers up for 2022.
0:52 now I know where your signature ''ehh' comes from :)
Huh...I've never noticed that before!!
So nice that the MBTA goes there now, what with the Green Line extension and all
Your dad is insanely cool.
I live in Danforth close to gilman lived there all my life
I believe that this station has 6 trains every day and not just two. We've been to and from Chicago going through Gilman many times. It seems like the City goes through the center of more small towns than other trains we've been on. Some towns they appear to go pretty much right in the center of town.
It's two a day in each direction that actually stop (the Illini/Saluki), and the City of New Orleans adds another train in each direction on the line, but those skip Gilman.
The City of New Orleans does not stop only the two Illinois supported trains
I love your parents.
it would be easier if the station was actually in the town. I've taken the train through there a few times and it baffled me that the station is outside the town.
I was waiting for either your mom or dad to say "Miles, it was a really nice trip and thanks for bringing us with you BUT we're only going to give you $6.00 each back to you not the whole $12.00 for each of us because it was GILMAN!!! LOL
YES ILLINI TRAIN THATS THE TRAIN I USE TO GET HOME WHEN I BISIT MY MOM.. ITS NEVER MENTIONED
Love this concept. Out of curiosity, what data are you going off of for the ridership levels, and are you counting Clemson, SC and New Haven State Street towards the least used in their respective states?
Thank you! I'm using the Rail Passengers Association ridership sheets: www.railpassengers.org/resources/ridership-statistics/
Despite being pretty new in terms of Amtrak service, New Haven State wasn't the least used in Connecticut in 2019! Clemson is a weirder case because it seems like post-reopening it actually is STILL the least-used in South Carolina. I'll have to think about that...
The train used to stop at 63rd Street until Amtrak, not sure if you want to wait for a train there right now?
So wow how do the handicapped persons get up the stairs and step stool especially 🤔😳🙄🥺😥I guess I could never travel by train..
Glad the trip went well 4 y'all
God bless 🙌🙏❤
Thank you! They have a wheelchair lift that they use to bring folks up to the train, but it's a pretty hacky idea of "accessibility"...
@@MilesinTransit exactly 💯
Thank you Miles..
God bless 🙌🙏❤
I love the least used, DO EVERY STATE AMTRAK OPERATES IN!
That's the plan!
@@MilesinTransit Do New Jersey! My state! You might have to re upload it after the new Scranton PA line comes! Then the least used station will surely be on that line!
I love your moms i love art mask
To bad yall didn't make it down to Mattoon thats my area
This is a sweet ass video.
Thanks!
Dude, it seems you hot your style and energy mostly from your dad but your mom gave you your snark/sense of irony.
They are no amtrak plans by u of Chicago. You can the ic to Homewood or get at van Buren and walk
Yu did not have to walk across the street from the transit center, there is a covered walkway from it?
The grouchy lady needs her own Channel.
Haha your parents are cool
How did you get out to Chicago?
You feel about Gilman the way we feel about Chicago. We enjoy being in the country and not in a gang violenced hell hole.
The parents are VERY New England. Blunt, sarcastic, skeptical. I left to get away from that attitude and I'm glad I did.
Wait, that's not Miles' mom.
The real question is: Does your mom love art?
The mask does not lie, she does indeed!
"Cultural excursion" lmao .
Spoiler: there's not a lot in Creston or Bingham.
Not a cat, a racoon.
art happens to be short for artificial
If Gilman had a wine bar next to that train station I'm virtually certain your Mom would have given it a 10/10. If it had a museum though, it still would have gotten a 1. Men should rate all bathrooms as a 10 unless completely unfunctional. I will have to have a talk with your Dad next time I see him. It's unfortunate that you lost the footage where your parents tell you about how they walked 10 miles to school every day. Finally, your Dad's move at the end, paying for himself only, well, once your Mom sees this video, he's sleeping on the couch ;) Fun stuff!!!
your parents are good sports. lol I guess they are not foamers.
WHY are you ALWAYS whipping that camera around? It's obnoxious.
The first thing people should learn when doing a video is not TO DO THAT!
