The Tesla is absolutely comparable in price or maybe even cheaper to purchase, not to mention all the fuel and maintenance savings. And no insurance isn't way higher. If your insurer is quoting a ridiculous premium, switch companies.

My 23 WRX Premium with Harmon Kardon/Sunroof and STi Short Throw was $32,200 new OTD, tax, tag, title, everything. so even with the tax credit for my Model 3 Performance it was $49,100 everything said and done. Definitely a pretty significant difference, obviously prices will vary wildly but just giving a little real world insight to someone who has done it very recently for both cars. Granted over time it will save me about $500 a month in gas w/electricity calculated into charging the Tesla, but it was a $17k price difference between the two. That's a pretty large chunk. This is also to say, not to buy an overpriced TR edition of the WRX, Would never spend over 35k for a WRX even though it is my favorite car.

(minus incentives if applicable) now if they continued the STi on the other hand. (whether it will be electric or not) might have been a closer comparison. but either way it’s a unique comparison regardless.

When you actually get a real 350 mile range with the air on and driving in hilly areas and can charge an EV to 100% in the same time it takes me to fill up my tank, then you can come talk to me. I'm not down for spending another 2-3 hours to go visit my dad or my son. I'm sure they're great around town, but an EV doesn't work for me having only one car. Several of my coworkers have Model 3 Performance Teslas, but they won't take them on long trips for the same issues that I have. EVs may be faster, but it's not just about that. I can cook a steak in a microwave, but It's much better cooked on the grill. A significant part of my driving enjoyment are the exhaust sounds and much better driver engagement, and I'm not willing to give that up just for being faster between stoplights. You really can’t compare a wrx or a M3 against a Model 3. They are totally different and shine in different aspects. A Model 3 performance will never compare to some fantastic gas cars and Vs Versa. Crazy the divide of some people.

Nice review and I would agree we don't need to be tribal, ie, hate others who drive different types of cars. However, I am very much a pro EV person if nothing else because I reckon we are experiencing climate change and more extreme weather as a consequence. And I don't want my house, my neighbourhood, my city wrecked from an extreme weather event because people are hesitant to change. Also I really like clean air, and how quiet EVs are. Think how much better regarding both living on a busy road will be if EVs become the majority. So I have owned a whole lot of muscles cars, my last, a turbo charged Ford was extraordinary at the height of its powers. But I love my new Tesla Model 3 Performance so much, love the acceleration, that the regen behaves just like a manual car as a result of the engine braking, how well it handles, how quiet and comfortable it is, how roomy it is and I am 6'2". I certainly don't miss the sound of a muscle car, in fact now I cringe when I hear one making a huge amount of noise. Give me the much faster EV any day.

The WRX is an everyday driver’s car while the tesla is much more of a “luxury” everday car. If you love driving (especially stick) and need more practicality than a brz get the wrx. If you love technology and pretty much not care much of the driving dynamics but also want something that can kick ass just get the m3p.

BMW M3 XDRIVE Competition weighs 3,891 lbs. The Model 3 Performance is around 4060 lbs. Model 3 is lower price and quicker. Better tech. Quieter. It's not going to hit 290 km/h (only 260 km/h), but most people will rarely go that fast.

I have never seen a car as just a tool. It represents freedom and it has gotta be something you can build a relationship with. A car's gotta be personable and private. The freedom and rights I enjoy today are hard-earned over generations and I will not regress in that aspect. I feel yucky about the lack of privacy with a Tesla. Can't trust a snitch and don't want to live under the lens. It was only a few years ago in the news that Tesla got sued because former employees anonymously confirmed that extremely private and sometimes embarrassing footage of customers had been shared around the company including but not limited to nudity. I also believe the tethered nature of electric power, in conjunction with the legislated push for electric cars, while simultaneously dragging their feet with any form of drastic development of a charging infrastructure, is a clear attempt by governing powers to exhibit control over the movement of the populace. I will not willingly support such an agenda. I won't be under lock down ever again if I can help it. Until the privacy concerns are addressed, the Tesla is not a perfect daily driver as so many claim.

The convertible was really fun until I got skin cancer. The Tesla gives me an open feeling without the UV. The one-pedal driving can be really fun on a mountain canyon road. The Tesla is a much better roadtripping car. Everyone has to make their own +/- comparisons for their individual use cases.

I think we are on the same page, it's ridiculous that some use the drivetrain as a reason to divide themselves from other enthusiast. I also have a bit of a problem with those that tell you how bad a car/bike is having never driven or owned one. I used to race and rally and my favourite ICE car was a Vauxhall VX220 turbo. A small mid-engined car from GM with a Lotus chassis. 500kg lighter than the stripped out Porsches and Ferraris, you literally drove around the outside of them on bends on track days. These days I have an 8 year old Model S, that's currently covered 264,000 miles, no rattles or squeaks and I've just started replacing the suspension components, so while it would be nice if the interior was more like a Merc for fit and finish, I'd say the engineering and build quality of the rest of the car is top notch. The lack of noise and gear changes makes the drive different, but once you get used to a different driving style, you can have a lot of fun in an EV. And like you say, you can be very quick without much effort. I do a lot of long trips, I regularly drive down to southern Italy from the UK and I know that even after driving all day, I can accelerate hard out of a corner and the car isn't going to check if my reflexes are still sharp. Re the Miata/MX5 you mentioned, there's a company in the UK that puts the all alloy Jaguar 2.5 V6 in them. It weights less than the original engine and is a bit more compact. So you keep the original handling but have much better power and torque and a V6 soundtrack. Look up the Rocketeer, if that interests you.
