If defensive impact is what DPOY is about - making your team a top-ranked defense - then Wemby should win.
Gobert is awesome, but the T-Wolves' D barely notices when he is off the floor. I think they drop two spots in defensive ranking without him.
The TEAM is full of good defenders.
With Wemby on the floor, the Spurs are a top 5 defense. Without him, they are bottom-feeders. Literally.
He takes one of the worst defensive squads of all time and makes them top 5 when he is on the floor. That should be an automatic DPOY.
This is probably the best Wemby DPOY I’ve seen
1) plenty of players have done that and not won DPOY most recent case was LeBron in 2012 or 13 can't remember specifically.
2) wemby is 100% the better defender but just like the MVP award team success counts as unfair as it can be.
Low seeded team, he's not going to get it. It's like you guys don't understand the most simple concepts lol. For the last 35 years the award has been given to winning teams. Wemby is fucking awesome, he'll get it next year probably.

Because unfortunately thats how the award has been voted for historically and people have a hard time with change. I think most people will agree that while he wont win it this year, he absolutely played DPOY level defense and looked better than Gobert many times this season. Spurs win 10 more game and maybe he wins it.

It's utter trash. This way of viewing it is more an assessment of their teammates than them. Yet even here it's inconsistent, if the team defense matters Wemby shouldn't even be a runner up. If it's close then it's not about the team, it's about the player. The excuses here are ridiculous - "we'll we've almost always done it that way so.... reasons."

If you don't have a positive enough impact on your team, then it's not very meaningful.
As much I loved Wemby pre-NBA, he's taken the Spurs from a 22 and 60 record to a 22 and 60 record.
A lot of highlights look awesome, but if you watch enough, then you realise DPOY is gonna be Gobert.
Wemby will get it another year.

Luka has the 6th best record in the NBA. The west is just super stack, if he was in the east he would be the second seed. The argument of team success completely dismisses the insane winning rate West teams had this year, where the Rockets with a 50% winning year are only 11, and its just stupid. Westbrook and Jokic won the award with the worst records. It seems as if Luka sets the standard so high for himself, that it doesn't really matter what he does he won't win MVP unleast they have a 1st seed.

@@TheFrostyMan21 Well the way I think about it is that Jokic is helping his team reach the top of the standings. While Luka isnt. At the end of the day Luka and Jokic are pretty close. So if Luka where to somehow win MVP I wouldn't be totally against it either.

The team aspect has not always been “the best player on the best defensive team.” Alvin Robertson was rewarded the DPOY with the spurs being an 8th seed with the number 10 ranked defense overall but was impactful, so the reward wasn’t always about the “best defensive team.” Rewards have been incredibly inconsistently rewarded including the DPOY and Wemby’s season has been an absolute outlier and should be rewarded due to on/off impact and defensive statistical accolades which majority favor him over Gobert.
Wemby should be the DPOY, He has a bigger impact on defensive than anyone in the league.
Gobert is great, but Wemby is a scarer matchup to go against than Gobert.
Coby White is easily the MIP. Other than 2021, the MIP has NEVER gone to a recent first round pick. That's because those guys are EXPECTED to be great. Maxey averaged over 20ppg as a high level player last year, and was always expected to be good. he's still really young and everybody and their mother could have predicted his success. Coby White has already been in the league for time, and people were genuinely questioning whether he'd stick in the league. He over DOUBLED his ppg and went in one season from a 7th/8th man to a near all star

Wolves were the #1 defensive even when Rudy sat or didn’t play. Spurs were top 5 when Wemby was on the court and 26th without him. Simple
21-11-4-4-1 is nuts man. Genuinely one of the best rookies I’ve ever seen. Put him on any playoff team in the west and they’re the absolute favourite to go all the way.
Not to discredit Rudy, but he will get exposed in the playoffs. We’ve heard all the stars in the NBA literally tell that they’ll attack Rudy in the PnR because he’s too slow on the perimeter. At least, that’s how it’s been the last couple of years. But I feel like any team in the West will drag him to the perimeter.
At the beginning of the year, the rookie of the year race was close, but throughout the season, Wemby is the clear ROTHY that there shouldn't be any runners up, but shout out to Chet and Brandon.

RUDY GOBERT:
- anchor to the #1 defensive team in the league(on multiple teams, even in his jazz days)
- #2 in paint points allowed (2nd best in NBA)
- #3 in second chance points allowed (3rd best in NBA)
- top 5 in defense at within 10ft (wemby isn’t even top 10)
- better overall DFGM% than wemby
- higher defensive win shares than wemby
- (this is a team stat but rudy heavily impacts it) #1 team defensive rating and #1 individual defensive rating (104.4) in the league
the only thing wemby has over rudy is his STOCKS, which don't even directly contribute to stops. The things rudy leads in, DO directly contribute to stops. I've seen people say wemby turns the #27 defense into a top 5 defense on the floor, but that's if you're looking at defensive rating which is a complete team stat. and even then its not top 5, it peaks at #22. Idk this is just my take. I believe wemby will be a future DPOY, but this season rudy is just absolutely blowing every stat out of the water compared to the other candidates.
Coby white should be the most improved. Maxey showed us these signs last year

I totally agree on mvp, roty, dpoty I am rather saying we might consider WeMby finished the season being a better defenser than Rudy even especially due to the impact he has on the team defense level (stats) but Rudy is enormous; hard ot say I'd give it Gobert so Wemby can try harder and become the DPOY in the years coming
Maxey over Coby is wild. Maxey went from good to great while Coby had one foot out the door to elite within one year.

Last 35 years DPOY winners were high ranked winning teams. With the except of a couple like 41-41 '95 nuggets, and they were still 4th in the conference. Wemby is great, but he doesn't fit the criteria for the award.

Based on your own metrics of making the team better defensively Wemby should have won DPOY easily! The Spurs were a bottom 5 defense when he's on the bench and number one while he's in the game.
