  • On a cold, rainy day in Busan, we randomly stumbled across one of the city's most famous restaurants that specializes in the local favorite "Dwaeji Gukbap", Pig Intestine Rice Soup. We were a little intimidated by the pig body parts hanging from the wall, but we decided to go for it anyway...

I'm late because I just discovered your channel. I'm Korean-American and I was quite impressed by you guys recognizing elements about the dish without knowing the culture and language. I can see you guys are seasoned travelers. Like he knew the salted shrimp was for salting the dish without needing it to be explained to him. And you Emily(?), recognized it was an old traditional hearty dish for villagers and weren't freaked out like a typical westerner would be. Cheers to you and safe travels.

You've identified correctly ;) Plus, we spent 1 month in Korea studying the culture, learning how to speak some Korean and read Hangeul, and asking lots of questions before we started filming content to post on RUclips. We're by no means experts, but we did get somewhat acquainted with Korean culture before we started filming :)
And you're not late! Still lots of content coming!

You're supposed to put about a table spoon of the salted shrimp into the soup, and then dump the rice into the soup. Eat them with side dishes.

If you come to South Korea, I highly recommend trying this soup at least once! (You can even find it in Seoul)
It’s a soup that many Koreans love (especially after a night of drinking), and it’s a unique eating experience :)

Also, don’t forget to add the “pap” (rice) into the soup towards the end when there’s only about 1/4-1/3 of the broth left

Must add salt/shrimp most Korean soups of that nature are purposely not salted much so that the eater can add salt to their personal preference. So if it’s a little bland don’t be afraid to add salt!

Dwaeji Gukbap literally translates to Pork Rice Soup. The milky color comes from boiling bones for a long time at high temperature. And the reason why it tasted a bit bland is because when it comes to all kinds of bone broths in Korea, usually the patron seasons the broth at the table with salt and pepper or with a spicy salty paste made out of garlic and gochugaru (korean chilli powder). These bone broth soups are very healthy and usually don't have much fat because Korean's like to strain the soup so you are left with no floating fat on top. And the green that was served as a side dish and in the soup are Korean chives.

Just a side note but, Koreans use spoons much more heavily than rest of Asian countries as far as I know. We'd mosly use spoons for rice and soup/stew (for its contents and broth), and chopsticks for noodles, side dishes or somethings that spoons won't do easily. So whenever I see westerners keep trying to eat rice with chopsticks in Korean restaurants even when they can't do well, I feel quite a bit frustrated. Even if I tell them you'd use spoon, they won't listen and just keep trying.. LOL
