Great tutorial, I actually think I can do this now :) Thanks for posting this. Awesome video, very neat way to cut the blind by removing them from the roller. Another tips for the cord is you can cut them and use the jointer to fit them within the frame. The jointer also can be used as stopper so you won’t keep rolling the blind. Cheers
Hello from England. Very informative video. In the process of moving house so off the shelf blinds obviously so much cheaper than made to measure. Will follow your instructions when trimming down to size. Thank you for scissor info as in the past I have had marks when cutting blind fabric. Well done great video.
Very helpful. You've put a lot of edits into this to cut it down, which is nice. The audio was hard to hear on the phone though, even at highest settings.
Hey Malcolm, I’m glad it helped you out. I think I have an unhealthy obsession with doing everything myself - like this blind trimming, and sometimes it works well👍 cheers, Kent
Nice - only one comment: Our blind chains can be shortened so that you don't have to drop it below the window frame (allowing for a cleaner look). Just look at the slightly thicker part 🙂
This is excellent, thank you so much. I’m attempting this tomorrow. However I really don’t like the chain going below the window to the wall, I hope I don’t have to do that. I’ll have to google if that can be shortened.
A few pro tips. 1. If possible, use a sharp Stanley knife to trim the blind and cut in one smooth motion. If there's any fraying you can trim with clippers or (be careful) but use a lighter to round of any small frays. 2. Cut down the blind on the "pin side" any imperfections will be less noticeable as they will be less visible than if on the cord side (the side you roll up and down with) 3. When applying the bottom rail. You need to make sure you put it on with a smooth motion to avoid "puckering". If puckering occurs there are two options. If it's minimal you can gently tug the bottom rail downwards and with your hands push the skin outwards from the puckering to the edge of the blind. ... if the puckering is heavy you can remover the bottom rail and re apply. Making sure you apply smoothly and consistently. Good video though :)
thank you for explaining how to install the drive chain holder. I installed the brackets sideways in the recess...does that matter? Your video is so comprehensive. thank you again for your help.
Very informative video, I seem to always struggle with my blinds fraying after instillation once they’ve been cut to size! Any suggestions to prevent this or how to seal the edge?
Thank you for all these clear instructions! I bought a roll-up blind and was wondering if I could change to a roll-up device like the one you use in the video. Do you believe this is possible? (I think so, because I saw some on Amazon) Last question: How do I remove the end caps from each side of the pole on my automatic roller blind?
hey mate, the blinds that I have dealt with all have 'pop out' end caps, if the drive and the blind's roller fit each-other I don't see why you can't make this happen, maybe consult with a local blind retailer for directions surrounding you particular set up, all the best, Kent
I've attached conservatory blinds to the upvc with strong double sided tape. Haven't fallen down yet! I don't want to put holes into the frames, just seems a bad thing to do for some reason
Hey Dragon, good time saving idea, I would think that any saw action would potentially leave a rough edge that would susceptible to fraying etc. let us know how you get on🤙 Kent
Not sure If this is a stupid question but what did you use to sand down can I use just sand paper and the measurement you took to cur was it the width of the blind without the brackets or with
Hey Naima, I used a file to smooth out the cut not sandpaper, but you can try it if you like. The measurement was the overall window frame size, and then measured the blind (with brackets attached) and subtracted the difference, this is how much I needed to cut off the blind and roller. Thanks, hope that helps, Kent
Hey Naima, that’s a great question …when the blind is mock assembled on the floor I get the overall measurement, then subtract the window frame measurement, then cut that much off the roller, mine was about 30mm so I used a hacksaw to cut, and a file to smooth the cut end. Both these are pretty cheap tools if you don’t have them already. Best of luck👍 Kent
Hy bro I just wanna ask you am so so confused what width mean and drop because when I measuring the windows I just seen like 170 so when I need to Oder the blinds they asking me width so give me some information about that width and drop and what they are
Hey mate, yeah the width is obviously how wide the window is, but this is measured between the frame of the window (frame is usually timber), the drop is the height of the window or door (or how long the blind needs to be). ihope this helps, Kent
Hey AJ, yeah sure can, switch the two end mechanisms (and brackets) around, you can also have the blind roll facing forward or back depending on your preference. Best of luck mate👍Kent
Yeah you can, I quite liked keeping the roll long for 2 reasons, 1; This allows fix ups for things like if the dog chews it🤷♂️ there is still enough fabric for coverage once damage cut off, and 2; the larger spool of blind material tended to block more light sneaking through at the tops of the windows above the blind (not a deal breaker though).
Great question though Monica.. You may need to change to double sided tape if you are to trim the top of the fabric, as we need it attached to the blind roller some how. 👍Kent
Hey Will, when measuring we need to mock assemble the blind with brackets etc and take that overall measurement👍 sorry if I didn’t explain that well in the video. Cheers mate, Kent
Great video but I'm a little confused. To cut the roller blind down to size, do you include the little metal or plastic and caps, you know what the little thing sticking out that actually hold the blind up, in the measurement when you cut the blind down, if that makes sense?.
Sorry Dee Dee, I'm not sure what you are asking 🤷♂️. I have the end caps and brackets in place for an overall measurement. Don't worry about the spring-loaded pin, it'll fit in no problem. Does that answer your question?
@@InspireDIY Thank you for responding. You kind of answered my question. My roller is too big for the window. It has a flat metal pin, that does not have a spring, on one end that fits into the mounted bracket and on the other end it has the small metal pin that does retract(spring). Now i might be over thinking this, but both of the mounted brackets take up a bit of space as do the pins that extend on the shade. You measured the actual wood window frame and then cut your blind material/post down to size. Are you telling me you don't have to factor in the thickness of the brackets on either end and the extension of the metal pins in the the total measurement before you cut down the roll and material? Does that make what i'm asking a bit more clear??
Yeah those brackets have to be added into your measurement... here's the equation; Roller blind (+ end caps & brackets all together) measurement - window frame size = amount to cut off roller and fabric. There will be a gap around the blind due to the brackets using a bit of space 🙄 block-out is a bit misleading, the material blocks out light, but how the blinds are designed let's light in all the way around 🤷♂️. Hopefully this helps.

Hey Imogen, great question.. yeah the hacksaw suits the aluminium but would leave a rough edge on the fabric that would fray☹️. For the 10mins it takes to unroll and do properly I reckon you blinds are worth it👍. Thanks, Kent
Take your time, scissors are the easiest way, I suggest you make several measurement marks on the back side of the unfurled blind and draw a straight line to cut along. Good luck and please let me know how you get on😉
Hey Jamie, sorry mate - yeah, the first measurement was a rough measure to ascertain what size blind I’d need ..eg a 1.8m x 1.2m was just oversize. Then before cutting it down to size I got accurate measurements 👍 I hope that helps mate, cheers, Kent

Thanks chronic, it's the little tips sometimes that make the job just that bit better hey! 👍Kent
Is there a reason not to saw them all at once while rolled up?
Hey Imogen, great question.. yeah the hacksaw suits the aluminium but would leave a rough edge on the fabric that would fray☹️. For the 10mins it takes to unroll and do properly I reckon you blinds are worth it👍. Thanks, Kent
Inspire DIY thank you! I’m just worried about cutting it wrong!
Take your time, scissors are the easiest way, I suggest you make several measurement marks on the back side of the unfurled blind and draw a straight line to cut along. Good luck and please let me know how you get on😉
Inspire DIY I did it!! It’s amazing thank you so much for this video! The only problem is that it rolls up slightly wonky when you open the blinds x
Well done Imogen🤙
I'm confused,
at the start, you measured the window, and it was 1.8..
Then you said before cutting that it's 1771.
I'm confused 😕
Hey Jamie, sorry mate - yeah, the first measurement was a rough measure to ascertain what size blind I’d need ..eg a 1.8m x 1.2m was just oversize. Then before cutting it down to size I got accurate measurements 👍 I hope that helps mate, cheers, Kent
A very helpful video, but it would have been good ( for me at least) if you had have done both types of fitting, other wise all good.
Hey Les, maybe in the next install I’ll need to ‘face fix’, until then good luck with your blinds👍cheers, Kent
Great video bro; you need to work on the audio though. Explain a bit better some key parts of the job. Where did you get the strip used to mark the blind with. Great tips otherwise.
Thanks for the feedback Gerry, appreciate it👌
The strip I used is just a straight edge of anything.. I think I've improved my audio a bit - have a quick look at something newer and let me know your feedback. Thanks again for your feedback - it's a learning curve👍
The volume is a bit low on the video. But good instrutions.
Cheers Ron, audio recording has improved since this filming 🤙 Kent
You didn't show How The Rods Work up close??? We are having trouble sliding blind back in slots????
What do you mean by rods Kay?
no sound
The sound is so low, makes it very difficult to hear what you are saying, especially with somewhat of an accent. It looks like a great video with very thorough instructions. I will try to record it on something else and play it back with more sound. Thank you.
Hey SC29403 (does this mean you're in Charleston SC?) Thanks for the feedback - yes I had audio dramas with this video 🙄 here is a link to a slightly better audio version ruclips.net/video/UDssxeCpRE4/видео.html I hope it helps. Best of luck (from Australia) 👍 Kent
Bit louder would be good
Thanks for the feedback Murry cod.. my audio has improved heaps since then👍.
The audio is too low
Thanks Gloria, yeah I know, I've improved audio since then 👍 Kent
Audio is better but still low.
Oh sorry Gloria.. I was meaning I have improved my audio on videos recorded since this one. I have added 'CC' closed captions if that helps. Kent
Great information and direction, audio poor.
Hey Jessica, thanks so much - hopefully my audio has improved since this video👍Kent
SHOW ME THAT DEVICE
Great video but hard to hear you
Hey Karen, yeah sorry - I’m aware of that issue with this video.. audio has improved big time since then 👍 Kent
I mean, this is great. I'm just way more useless than this guy.
Oh MrTrex, I reckon you are being hard on yourself.. If I can do it i'm sure you can! best of luck mate, Kent
