I'm a software engineer. Have been doing agile dev work for almost 10 years. The software updates being an excuse for the delays is both likely true and at the same time likely part BS.
The negative take: I have personally rewritten apps that are no doubt as complicated or more complicated than Splinterlands in different tech stacks by myself in 5-12 month time frames. The one I'm currently finishing up also had no one remaining from the original team so I had to completely learn the code base on my own while writing the new version from scratch. It has been about 10 months and I'm almost done. I don't say this to brag, I'm a mediocre software engineer at best. My point is, they have more people, access to the original authors for questions, and are working with much better documented and coder friendly technology and are still delaying a lot more than they probably should. If I'm not mistaken, land was originally slated to be released like 6+ months ago and now is being projected to be released next year... that is a HUGE delay given the resources they have. I can't say for sure since I'm not actually part of the team but it seems they're using the tech upgrade as a much bigger excuse than it should be.
The positive take: Dev is hard. This 10 month project I'm doing should have been done months ago... It is super easy to underestimate things and getting mad about it does no good. Personally, I'd rather them delay as long as needed to get it all right. It is also definitely true that the new coders will get faster the more they learn and when the tech 'modernization' is finished new feature dev will accelerate. Probably not as much as they think... but it will definitely allow them to drop new features much quicker. Especially once they start releasing patterned updates that are formulaic in nature, like most games. Even though the only thing for that on the road map is new card sets, I would expect more eventually and it'll be fun to see regular releases of new events and stuff.
However, I wish they'd fix certain problems with the current game in parallel. The delays are really just a pile-on annoyance, I think most players that are quitting or frustrated with the state of things would agree there are much deeper issues right now than having to wait on features. Issues that do not even seem to be on their road map but if they don't do something they might not have many players left to enjoy the extremely delayed features when they finally get them right.

Very good conversation. I think we need more rational perspectives like this.

i wonder how land can suck this time? if it does suck, they can do changes to make it better. No one can perfect land. The devs will never satisfy everybody. i expect lands will be trial and error since its new.
